Send us a textThe scene on the beach was horrific. Thousands of mothers and baby elephant seals lay in the sand, taken out by a deadly virus.Dr. Marcela Uhart and her colleagues were shocked by what they found after the H5N1 avian influenza virus swept through a colony of elephant seals on the coast of Argentina's far south Patagonia region. More than 17,000 of the animals had died, their bodies ravaged by the virus.H5N1 bird flu has swept around the world, destroying poultry flocks and wildlife. Like other influenza viruses, it mutates constantly and swaps genetic material in a process called reassortment. It can now infect not just birds, but livestock such as cattle and sheep as well as mink, pet cats, sea lions, and human beings. It has devastated egg production and threatens dairy operations. The biggest fear is that it will acquire both the ability to spread from human to human and maintain its most deadly qualities. An H5N1 pandemic has the potential to be much, much worse than Covid-19 was.People can't be ready for the virus unless the world keeps an eye on it. That's what Uhart, who is Director of the Latin America Program at the Karen C. Drayer Wildlife Health Center at the University of California, Davis, is trying to do. That's why her team studied the bodies of the dead elephant seals and other animals killed by the virus.“Mammal-to-mammal transmission could be a stepping-stone in the evolutionary pathway for these viruses to become capable of human-to-human transmission,” they wrote in their report, published in the journal Nature.“What we can learn from what happens in wildlife is crucial,” Uhart says. “That is where these viruses evolve.”Listen as Uhart chats with One World, One Health host Maggie Fox about what her team discovered in Patagonia and what it might mean for every animal on the planet, including humans. And listen to our other podcast episodes looking at H5N1 bird flu and how we should be preparing for the next pandemic.
Lawrence Ward will mark his first year as University of Hartford president in July. Ward sat down with the CBIA BizCast to discuss his journey to lead UHart, his first year, and his goals for the university. UHart is something of a homecoming for Ward, who grew up in Vernon and graduated from the University of Connecticut. Ward's career actually started in sales and marketing at Aetna. But said the “seeds for being an educator were first planted as a young child.” Ward said growing up, he looked up to his mother—a high school social studies teacher. With the help of several mentors, Ward shifted to consulting for an organizational training company, and ultimately becoming an associate dean at American University and a dean and vice president at Babson College. Ward said he was drawn to UHart's ethos of being a private university that works to serve the public good. He also said coming back to Hartford was a full-circle moment for his family. Ward's grandmother, who didn't have more than an eighth grade education, worked as a chambermaid to help put three children through school. “The only thing that makes my story possible, and that of my family, is the promise of higher education,” he said. “So it's really important, it's very personal, and it is a tremendous honor to come back as president.” Ward became president during a period of transition for the university. That includes post-COVID financial realities and the controversial decision to shift from Division I to Division III athletics. “I have a challenge of rebuilding confidence in this institution and rebuilding confidence in ourself organizationally,” he said. “That's a cultural challenge.” Ward said its been important to him to be present, engaged, and accessible to really understand the community. "I really prided myself on these first nine months, on doing exactly that," he said. "I have been really heartened by the university community's response to me and my leadership." Ward said his immediate goal is to make UHart a preferred destination for students and families. A big part of that is developing programs that prepare students for in-demand careers like nursing, robotics, and business. “We've got some really strong market-facing in-demand programs, and we need to match that with really high-quality student focused experience on campus,” he said. To do that, Ward said they are stepping up their efforts to engage with companies to create unique partnerships that will create career pipelines for students, benefitting the businesses and the university. Ward said as the university evolves, it's important they live up to their name and help lift up the Hartford community. “We feel as though we have a responsibility as a University of Hartford to be supportive,” he said. “Success for the region will mean success for the University of Hartford.” The CBIA BizCast is made possible through the generous support of Google. Alexia Woodruff and Abigail (Abbey) Riley are both grad students, finishing the Prosthetics and Orthotics program at UHart this spring. They also did their undergrad at UHart and joined Associate Professor Duffy Felmlee, for 10 days on a goodwill trip to Kenya to work with under-served children who are missing limbs (either born that way, or lost them due to trauma). This was done in partnership with the Limb Kind Foundation. The team left for Kenya on March 24th. They lived at the hospital, creating prosthetics for the children. You can also help them fundraise for special shoes that can go on the kids' prosthetics and grow with them over time, so they will hopefully last for years. The shoes are called “Shoes That Grow.”

Hisham Alnajjar, the school's dean of engineering, technology, and architecture, joins the conversation to explain the doors the lab will open for students. The IoT lab opened in August inside the university's new advanced engineering building. On this special edition episode Ryan and Mo sat down with both current, and former University of Hartford athletes along with highly respected Connecticut Sports Columnist, Jeff Jacobs, to discuss the latest news surrounding the University of Hartford and their athletic programs on campus. Recently, there was breaking news relating to the possibility of the University of Hartford which is currently, a Division 1 school, looking to transition to become a Division 3 program. There was a confidential study conducted over the winter by Carr Sports Consulting, that looked at Division One Athletics at the University of Hartford and discovered that UHart loses $13 million dollars a year on sports. Email screenshots were later released that showed current University of Hartford President, Gregory Woodward, asking a professor at the school to write an editorial to gain support of the transition. Make sure you listen to this episode as various athletes from the University of Hartford voice their opinions and concerns, and as always, be sure to leave a like, comment, and a review down below! Dennis House. A surprising secret plan at the University of Hartford. Weeks after making history, there is a plan to drastically downgrade the athletic program at UHart. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Just about a month ago the University of Hartford Men's Basketball team was playing in its first NCAA Tournament. Head Coach John Gallagher was out in the media talking to anyone who would listen about his program and the university. Fast forward to last week when WTNH's Dennis House reported that the university was debating a demotion in their athletic program from D1 to D3. On this episode I'll dive into this story from a few different angles. First, you'll hear from Dennis House himself (1:38-11:15). He gives additional background on this story and talks about his interview with University of Hartford president Gregory Woodward. Next up you'll hear from Melissa Pereira (11:16-19:57). A former softball player for UHart, she has gone out to start a petition to keep the school at the D1 level. She'll explain why she started the petition and what being a D1 athlete meant to you. Finally, you'll hear from Erik Ostberg (19:58-39:35). Erik played baseball for UHart and was drafted by The Tampa Bay Rays in 2017. Erik talks about why he's against the move to D3 and shares insight into his time with the baseball program.

Let's start 2021 right, with one of the best podcast I have ever been apart of. This podcast was one of the highlights of the last few years of my life. My productive conversation with the living legend that is Gabriel Mills was one of the most profound experiences I have had on this podcast. This was one the best and most insightful conversations I have had in a very long time. Gabriel Mills is an artist who is getting his Masters Degree in Art at Yale University and being around Gabe since we met in college is one of the best things that could have happened to me. Gabriel really has helped me find my way through life, have self love, and he really helped inspire me to go for my dreams. My life would be completely different, if I did not meet Gabe Mills and he has been a great mentor to me and a good buddy. He did not disappoint and we got honest about his art work, cancel culture, will society ever become understanding of different opinions, and the importance of taking ownership of your own brand. We also talk about love/dating, Kobe & Mamba Mentality, Tupac Shakur, Kanye, what makes something funny, why you can never give up in life, and much, much, more…. Plus, he gives some of the most impactful final words of any podcast. This podcast is honest, fun, hilarious, and emotional. I promise that anyone who listens to this show, will get a lot out of listening to Gabriel Mills. (3:23) - We start with Gabe talking about where we can see and find his art work. We also discuss how to contact him about his work. (7:01) - Gabe and Matt talk about being present. They talk about how everything can be interesting in the moment. (8:43) - The two gentlemen talk about the importance of listening to people (17:58) - Gabe and Matt talk about good vs. evil. Can we compromise our issues in this polarizing climate? Especially politically (27:32) - Gabe is a proud Vegan. So we talk about Veganism. (37:54) - Gabe calls out this Vegan restaurant that did him dirty in Philadelphia. A savage story follows after. (45:40) - It is time to talk about the good ole’ Hartford days. Gabe and Matt reminisce going to the University of Hartford together. What it was like being in Hartford, CT during college and the intense, fun, and memorable experiences they had being at Uhart and the growth they both have had since then. (52:10) - Gabe and Matt have a really insightful talk on the current dating culture and love/relationships. (1:07:54) - It is time to talk about the New York Knicks. Gabe loves to try to convince Matt it is a bad idea to be a Knicks fan, Matt defends his fandom. This leads to a chat about sports fandom. (1:28:00) - It is time to discuss how society views celebrities/professional athletes, people of influence, and high profiled individuals (1:39:36) - We also discuss taking ownership of your own brand, pursuing what you want to do as an individual, and controlling your own narrative. (1:47:19) - Gabe has some profound words regarding CANCEL CULTURE. Him and Matt get very honest about that subject. (2:07:03) - Gabe talks about Allen Iverson’s infamous “we talkin about practice” press conference and the deeper meaning behind that moment. (2:19:14) - Being fans of Kobe Bryant brought Matt and Gabe closer together and their relationship grew because of their love of Kobe. So they talk Kobe’s tragic passing, his impact on their lives, and what Mamba Mentality means to them. (2:21:45) - We then talk about Kanye West.

Duerme a mis pies y no digas ¡Santa madonna! Leer texto completo
This week, Ruby Uhart, a rancher (among many other things like mom, blogger, teacher!) joins Katharine and Valene to discuss how important it is to give ourselves grace, being ok with failure and how to learn from it, and how agriculture has been victims of perfectionism long before social media was popular. She talks about a popular phrase in her family, “It'll all buff out” and how to apply it to life. She shares how to overcome some of those tough mental places, and has a great perspective on how we need to shift our thinking from “sustainable” to “regenerative”. Tune in to Episode 009 to hear more from Ruby!
Kevin Bonaparte explores how people connect through the use of technology. Zack Holcomb takes on conspiracy theories. For this episode, he sits down with both Philosophy Professor Donovan Cox and also an anonymous UHart student who frequents 4chan, a popular home for the most controversial conspiracy talk.
Michelle Mor, a student worker at the university Starbucks, has a conversation with Diana St. Mark- a food service worker for Aramark and an active member of the Unite Here Local 217 union. Together, they grapple with the treatment of workers on campus, as Diana becomes a voice for the people who are the backbone of the UHart community. Special Thanks to: -Diana St. Marks, for putting aside time to open up about her experience and life story -Won Pound, a recording artist on campus who has given the permission for the use of his music you heard in this pod cast -Professor Lauren Cook, for guidance in the production process

Is social media an alternative to political apathy? PAYCE Fellow Taylor Zitkus worked with a University of Hartford class to explore student apathy and also new forms of political expression on social media. Taylor argues that social media counts as political engagement because it is a way to become educated, connect with others, and express important views.
