We are diving into a mini-series exploring the connection between the climate crisis, migration and human rights. During the first of these episodes, we have the pleasure to talk to Walter Kälin, professor emeritus of international and constitutional law, at the University of Bern, Switzerland. Walter Kälin is the present Envoy of the Chair of the Platform on Disaster Displacement. With his help, we are aiming to get the numbers and facts right, and to understand the big concepts that govern the discussion, for example "forced displacement". We are also taking a look at political responses at the international, regional and national levels.
Washington has announced it will hold trade negotiations with Taiwan in the coming weeks. China has warned the US against the move, stoking further tensions in the region. But some Taiwanese businesses say a new deal could help them. Economist and professor at National Taiwan University, Chung-Ying Lee, joins the programme from Taipei. As the EU publishes its latest inflation data, breweries in Germany are among those struggling to stay afloat. Walter König of the Bavarian Brewers Federation tells us how high energy costs are causing a particular headache for his industry and consumers. Emma Wall from Hargreaves Lansdown joins us for the latest markets update. Archana Shukla reports from India, where lax workplace safety rules are costing thousands of lives and livelihoods. Finally, some sobering news: Japan has issued a word of advice to young people about their drinking habits, but it's not what you might think.

A Kaldor Centre Virtual Conference key panel session held on 19 October 2021. When people are on the move from the impacts of disasters or climate change, how does the law help or hinder them? Is refugee law useful? Human rights law? Migration law? What about regional free movement agreements? How is individual agency enhanced or eroded by legal frameworks? What about people who move but don't cross an international border, and what about people who can't move at all? Our experts will reflect on how these questions are answered across different times and places. Hear from Bruce Burson, New Zealand Immigration and Protection Tribunal; Lucy Daxbacher, Head of Mission to Uganda, Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD); Walter Kälin, Envoy of the Chair, Platform on Disaster Displacement; Caroline Zickgraf, Deputy Director, The Hugo Observatory; and chaired by Tamara Wood, Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law.
Very excited for today's studio chat with Natalie Clapp! Today's chat is all about her experiences working at a variety of manufacturing companies (lighting/upholstery/furniture) and networking til you find your niche. Natalie attended Illinois State University and did Communications Studies, Organizational & Leadership Communications. Upon graduation she moved to Charleston and ended up working at a high end lighting manufacturer called The Urban Electric Company before she moved to NYC. That is where she worked in design as a sales coordinator at Maharam. And now works at Walter K as the Sales Manager North America. She shares with us what her experience was like working at three different companies, with three very different product offerings! With this comes tons of knowledge on the product side, but most importantly how to help us designers find what we are looking for, especially when short on time (aka always) and a few tips on details we can include in our email requests!

International trade practices continue to evolve as technology makes transactions faster and more secure. How do these changes affect the law? At the California Lawyers Association’s 2019 Annual Meeting, On The Road host Monique Jewett-Brewster talks with Walter Oetzell about how cutting edge international trade practices call for increasingly regular evaluation of dated statutes and legal processes. Later in the interview, Monique turns to incoming chair of the CLA Business Law Section, Corey Weber, for a discussion of his goals for increasing the section’s involvement in the community in the coming year. Walter K. Oetzell is a partner with Danning, Gill, Diamond & Kollitz LLP. Corey Weber is a Partner at Brutzkus Gubner Rozansky Seror Weber LLP.
Walter K. Olson is an author and blogger who writes mostly about legal subjects, including tort reform. Olson is a senior fellow of the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank in Washington, D.C. Evidence matters. Yet even before “fake news” became a political weapon, it’s been notoriously difficult to get evidence into the policymaking process. How can we keep good evidence from being overwhelmed by bad politics? In this conversation, moderated by ABC Radio National journalist Eleanor Hall, three world-renowned experts talk about their experience from the front lines of research and policymaking in contentious areas – climate change, refugees and, where the two meet, climate change- and disaster-related displacement. Professor John Church is Australia’s most credentialled expert on sea-level rise and a long-time research scientist with the government CSIRO. He joined UNSW in 2016 as a professor in the Climate Change Research Centre, so he’s seen Australia’s approach to science and international obligations from inside and outside government. UNSW Scientia Professor and Kaldor Centre Director Jane McAdam is a pioneer in research on climate change- and disaster-related displacement, advising governments and international organisations including UNHCR. In 2017, her work in this field was described as 'transformative' by the jury of the prestigious Calouste Gulbenkian Prize for Human Rights, which she was the first Australian to win. Walter Kälin has extensive international experience as scholar and policymaker, most recently serving as Envoy of the Chair of the Platform on Disaster Displacement (and formerly of its predecessor, the Nansen Initiative on Disaster-Induced Cross-Border Displacement), providing strategic advice and leadership to this state-led process working towards better protection for people in the context of disasters and climate change. Professor Emeritus for international and constitutional law at the University of Bern (Switzerland), he has served the United Nations in various capacities, including as Representative of the UN Secretary-General on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons and twice as a member of the UN Human Rights Committee.

Walter-Küne: Fantasy on Tchaikovsky’s Eugene OneginChausson: Concerto in D Major for violin, piano, and string quartet, Op. 21Had circumstances been different, Ernest Chausson might well have become one of the most important French composers to bridge the Romantic and modern eras. Chausson led a comfortable upper-class life, studying law at his father’s encouragement prior to taking up composition in his early 20s. He studied with Massenet and then Franck at the Paris Conservatory, and made rapid progress. Still, there was no pressure on Chausson to make a living as a musician, and his output was modest. Chausson did leave behind a number of works that have found a foothold in the repertoire, among them the chamber piece on today’s program. Though it is a work for six instruments, Chausson’s odd title is far more fitting a name than “sextet”. The violin and piano are clearly the stars here, with the quartet acting like a miniature orchestra. Before the Chausson, you will hear Walter-Küne’s Fantasy on Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. A professor at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, Walter-Küne composed a number of fantasies on operatic themes, a number of which remain favorites with harpists today.
