Catherine, David and Matt hopped on YouTube mere moments after the Madrid men's final had finished to talk about the concluding days of the 2025 Madrid Open and What It All Means. Part one - ATP Results. We hail Casper Ruud after his thrilling victory over Jack Draper in the final, debate whether he's In The Mix for Roland Garros, and throw some cold water on the Draper Grand Slam hype, despite his incredible form and improvements. Part two - WTA Results (from 37m50s). Is Aryna Sabalenka the favourite for Roland Garros after her victory in Madrid? The answer to that probably depends on Iga Swiatek. We discuss her shockingly one-sided defeat to Coco Gauff in the semi-finals and how we read this concerning trend. Part three (from 60m). Naomi Osaka wins a WTA 125 title on clay and we look ahead to the return of Jannik Sinner in Rome. Buy tickets for Tennis Podcast Live in London on Thursday 26th June at Shoreditch Town Hall. The OpenAI corporate drama came to a sudden end last week. So sudden, in fact, that the pundits never quite figured out What It All Means. Jim Dempsey and Michael Nelson take us through some of the possibilities. It was all about AI accelerationists v. decelerationists. Or it was all about effective altruism. Or maybe it was Sam Altman's slippery ambition. Or perhaps a new AI breakthrough – a model that can actually do more math than the average American law student. The one thing that seems clear is that the winners include Sam Altman and Microsoft, while the losers include illusions about using corporate governance to engage in AI governance. The Google antitrust trial is over – kind of. Michael Weiner tells us that all the testimony and evidence has been gathered on whether Google is monopolizing search, but briefs and argument will take months more – followed by years more fighting about remedy if Google is found to have violated the antitrust laws. He sums up the issues in dispute and makes a bold prediction about the outcome, all in about ten minutes. Returning to AI, Jim and Michael Nelson dissect the latest position statement from Germany, France, and Italy. They see it as a repudiation of the increasingly kludgey AI Act pinballing its way through Brussels, and a big step in the direction of the “light touch” AI regulation that is mostly being adopted elsewhere around the globe. I suggest that the AI Act be redesignated the OBE Act in recognition of how thoroughly and frequently it's been overtaken by events. Meanwhile, cyberwar is posing an increasing threat to civil aviation. Michael Ellis covers the surprising ways in which GPS spoofing has begun to render even redundant air navigation tools unreliable. Iran and Israel come in for scrutiny. And it won't be long before Russia and Ukraine develop similarly disruptive drone and counterdrone technology. It turns out, Michael Ellis reports, that Russia is likely ahead of the U.S. in this war-changing technology.  Jim brings us up to date on the latest cybersecurity amendments from New York's department of financial services. On the whole, they look incremental and mostly sensible. Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) is digging deep into his Golden Oldies collection, sending a letter to the White House expressing shock to have discovered a law enforcement data collection that the New York Times (and the rest of us) discovered in 2013. The program in question allows law enforcement to get call data but not content from AT&T with a subpoena. The only surprise is that AT&T has kept this data for much more than the industry-standard two or three years and that federal funds have helped pay for the storage. Michael Nelson, on his way to India for cyber policy talks, touts that nation's creative approach to the field, as highlighted in Carnegie's series on India and technology. He's less impressed by the UK's enthusiasm for massive new legislative initiatives on technology. I think this is Prime Minister Rishi Sunak trying to show that Brexit really did give the UK new running room to the right of Brussels on data protection and law enforcement authority. The event of Acts 28:28-29 signaled a great turning point. Not only is it the final event in Luke's inspired history of the Great Transition, first from his recording of Israel's “rising” during the Pentecostal Dispensation. and then “Israel's fall”. But then, after Paul's salvation and raising up to be apostle of the Gentiles, of the transition from Paul's “Jews first” ministry to his casting aside of the nation and its people allowing the full manifestation of grace towards the Gentiles. Many of his teachings continue from this earlier period into the later unchanged, such as salvation by grace through faith alone, apart from any works, or the Pre-Tribulational Rapture. But others are not revealed until later, such as the completion of the word of grace or the Mystery itself with its many dimensions. Our outline is a simple one:Paul's Final Words in Rome — Their Spiritual Context and Significance, ReviewPaul's Teaching Before Acts 28:28 — The Details of the Great TransitionPaul's Teaching After Acts 28:28 — What It All Means for Us Today as We Rightly Divide the Word of Truth

As we reviewed last time, the event of Acts 28:28-29 signaled a fundamental turning point in Paul's ministry. Having reached Rome and in civil restraint, he called together the leaders of the Jewish synagogue and presented the claims of his risen savior. When they rejected their own Messiah and his preaching that day, he then in strong words formally set aside the ministry to those Jews and in effect all Jews, for this was the final event in the Great Transition period. From now on, he proclaimed, he would go to the Gentiles and they WOULD hear and believe his message. In today's study, we compare and contrast the teachings before and after this great turning point. Our major subjects are the ministry to “the Jews first” with all that that meant, including the signs and wonders wrought by the apostle and also the sign gifts given during the Transition to the Gentile believers “for the sake both of the Jews and the Gentiles. We look at both the evidences that those gifts and enablements actually did pass away and also Paul's teaching as to why and in what manner they would do so. We conclude by considering that Paul also was given the revelation concerning the Mystery and the various dimensions of the truth concerning the Dispensation of the Grace of God. When the full revelation of that was delivered to Paul and through Paul to the assemblies in his letters written after the Acts 28:28 event had been accomplished, the believer had all that was needed for spiritual maturity. No longer were there limitations regarding “the Jews” and their law. But the fullness of liberty was the domain of life in Christ Jesus.Paul's Teaching Before Acts 28:28 — The Details of the Great Transition, FinalPaul's Teaching After Acts 28:28 — What It All Means for Us TodayA Short Note on “Rightly Dividing the Word of Truth”

I'm working on a piece, based on a scrunched up old lady in a mask, who gets mown down by a cyclist. She's the last old lady in Mitte, Berlin, after Apple smash down the old folks home to build their fourth reich. Does it need more?Today, I'm sharing a recording with the Irish author, Rob Doyle, in preparation of us performing on Wednesday (flyer below). Also some photos. It's my absolute pleasure to be the guest of the legendary Danielle De Picciotto, host of the Blood of A Poet nights at the Volksbuhne, and artist, musician - she has an incredibly inspiring exhibition here at the Neurotitan Gallery, where I'm staying with Gil De Ray. Here I am spinning around it like Kylie. More pictures of the work on Cold Lips' Insta.Find Danielle however you like to find people, and listen to her music, particularly the recent Hackedepicciotto album that I'm very happy to make a tincy appearance on.This residency finds me centre stage of my Eurodream school days, in Mitte, where I saw the wall between East and West ideals getting bashed down on TV in 1989. Made me grow up an optimist, as acid-house unity accelerated Everywhere thereafter. Now my native land makes me feel sick, gut shuddering in this last summer of Europe. I refreshed myself in German lakes, and the C-generation (Covid - thanks Martyn Goodacre) - will not know Europe as I have. They will not know what democracy was, or a world not stressed by climate destruction. As artists are called ‘unviable' by the British government, it gives me great pleasure to become more of one.I cannot thank Danielle De Picciotto for the kindest love, and also husband, Alexander Hacke (of the seminal noise group, Einsturzende Neubauten, and former boyf to one of the worst role models a young girl could have, Cristiane F.) He and Gil De Ray have been bonding, and it's all very cute. Das residency is very 90s - I find different street art and graffiti or stickers each day - after the street tours start downstairs. I have explored the countryside, enjoyed a Fat White Family secret show, seen great art in organised pavilions, and received much love for the poetry book I pulled together to bring here, but also to finish a phase, as the recordings of some of that work are coming…my band with Gil, called Vagrant Lovers - they feature Danielle on violin, and the one and only Malik Crumpler Ameer in response to my words. The first tracks are Ghosts of St Leonards, and Temple. I'm sharing them on October 31, and November 5. My heart is drifting free, encapsulating a story here, more than writing it, sometimes it's about the detours. Winter will allow those words to freeze over the page, as I get my teeth into the new job as Managing Editor at Ambit. In the meantime - I hope you enjoy all this mail sends you. This photo is by Jason McGlade. For your reference, I'm including the intro to the podcast script below…And finally - thank you, to paying subscribers. Without you, I'd not have published Now Is Now, my poetry since 007, and more - it's great to have it stocked here at Neurotitan in Berlin, but also coming soon to Rough Trade in London. If you've not received your book, let me know - unless we've been in touch - and I'll be posting soon.My debut novel was supposed to be out this week, but Covid. And what is life but enjoying the detours? Stay strong, beautiful, and I will send fiction again soon, and recommendations for more. x ScriptINTRO:This is Kirsty Allison in Berlin, on a balcony in the east, looking down towards the spree river with Berghain between.  I'm sitting with Rob Doyle, the author of my favourite book so far this year, Threshold.   It's published in the UK and the US by Bloomsbury, so he takes throne as a leader in a new school of  digital existentialist modernists, who take a post-millenial ego, and ask questions about the Author's physical space on the page. It's a very self-conscious play, to be so self-aware of one's musings as the main act of writing, that it becomes centre stage of a story, that riffs like Sun Ra between the realities of floating self-aware on a dinghy on a sea of cosmic pulp simulacras.  The novel is always new, if it's doing it right - it's playing with something - doing something that's not been said before.  So in a Covid world - as fire tornadoes burn increasing street miliitias, and power struggles can be witnessed in the death scroll -  there's a new wave of The Author reflecting from a stage you recognise, as they explain What It All Means like academics, ingraining themselves to the page, channelling the white light, aware of the ironies of self from all sides of the prism.  Certainly that's the stuff I've been reading of late.  Some of the writers come out demonstrating their problems, and personal privileges, or lack of them - so to get to the end of the pages, still liking the writer - is enigmatic, and masterful.Rob Doyle is very tall, he appears at the door wearing a black polo neck and black pegs, looking total jazznik, because later tonight he'll be on stage with a strain of the Fat White Family in Neukolln, playing percussion at a reassuringly fun evening, where the super-spreading qualities of the flute can be ignored, as we travel in an alt reality, away from the claws that birthed us all.  Ex pat life, where universal globalisms of Me Too,  BLM, Terf-wars, squish in the Q-Anon malestrom of denial and manipulations of the maleducated grip for sense and logic mean the novel has not felt as relevant and required in counterculture in my lifetime.I remember Tessa Williams, one of my first editors, urgently passing me a copy of Trainspotting - its silver-skull cover becoming the book of the 90s.  Heroin chic rose as Britpop banged the national drum, as a kind of distraction from the government reclaiming 'their' streets after the Neo-hippy threat of people raving their lives away, hugging in fields, and driving away in buses, like the ones pictured in the second Cold Lips book, Whos F****n Planet by Martyn Goodacre.Threshold updates that cover, with a hologram, in an era where the individual is manipulated into the spectrum of hashtag identity politics, and good/bad - like/dislike polarisations mean we are the product, smashed beneath a data-driven duvet in a privatised society.  80% predictable, asking if that too is corrupted as any other statistic, the novel remains relatively data-proof, its nuance its strength, the unsearchable, between the lines facts being far truer than any single sentence or status update.OUTRO:Thanks for listening.  I'm making this on Sunday 27 September in Berlin.  The music is by Gil De Ray.  We're on a residency in Mitte at the Neurotitan Gallery as guests of the wonderful artist Danielle De Picciotto - whom you can hear a past conversation with in the trenches of all your favourite podcast outlets, via Anchor, Spotify, iTunes, many more, and our own coldlips.co.uk.  I also share these on kirstyallison.substack.com, where I gratefully send out thank yous of my new poetry book, Now Is Now, a collection since 007, to paying subscribers.  On Wednesday here, Rob Doyle joins me, Kirsty Allison, to perform in the gallery, with the writer and songwriter Kieran Leonard, of Saint Leonard - for a night of Modern Poetry.  There are currently some spaces remaining, it is limited, and doors will close at 7pm.  If you're not in Berlin, we will be streaming on social from Cold Lips, Danielle De Picciotto's and Gallery 46's Facebook and Instagrams.  Donations to artists are always appreciated.  But likely you'll be listening to this after, and I hope you'll find a recording of this memorable occasion.   The residency here has been wonderful - also come and support this space, Neurotitan - it's the last remanent of the joy of reunification between East and West Berlin.  After the wall fell in 1989, the free-for-all of the former no-man's land in the area known as Mitte was attained by squatters in buildings such as Tascheles, now largely a hotel (a model for Shoreditch's site of Red Gallery, that I wrote a book for), and Tresor nightclub in a former bank vault. Without records of previous families, lost in the war and partitioning, everything could be re-written. Neurotitan created a gallery space, bar, and arts spaces which remain underground, showing the works of Genesis P. Orridge, most quality street artists, and radical contemporary artists.  Danielle's show here is mainly work from the past 7 years - and I beg you to see it, buy it, support. And I know this is sounding like one long cultural shopping list, but Rob Doyle's book - Threshold, get it from an independent retailer, and keep an eye out for the forthcoming film version of his debut, This Is Ritual. It’s No Time To Die... from the Coronavirus. Although this is our George Lazenby episode, we must begin with why the studio moved the next Bond movie from April to a Thanksgiving release. What Now? - Top of Show Addressing No Time To Die’s Being Moved To a November Release Date, The Impact of Corona Virus on The Film Industry At Large, and What It All Means for MMO’s James Bond Character Study Series GEORGE LAZENBY’S JAMES BOND CHARACTER STUDY: NONSPOILER SECTION Getting Into Character - 10:20 (Lazenby’s Early Career + Stalking His Way Into Thee Role of 007) Lazenby’s Bond Filmography - 16:14 (How Lazenby’s Lone Bond Performance Stacks Up Against The Legend of Connery Before Him) His Performance As Bond Overall - 18:19 SPOILER WARNING - 24:44 SPOILER-FILLED SECTION The Spy Who’s Not Me - 25:43 (Why We Want To, But Never Could Be, This James Bond) Live and Let Dad Joke - 29:34 (This Bond’s Best [Worst?] One Liners) Dr. Please God No - 32:42 (Problematic Interactions w/ Women Through 2020 Eyes) Always Say Never Again - 39:33 (Moral Issues Through 2020 Eyes) Q Only Lives Once - 49:11 (The Cars, Gadgets, and Tech of Lazenby Bond) They’re Why Tomorrow Never Dies - 52:47 (The Struggles of These Bond Baddies) Goldfingers - 56:50 (We Fix The Bond Baddies) License To Bill - 1:02:34 (Totaling Up Bond’s Civic Damage) Your Homework/PLEASE LEAVE US 5*’S - 1:07:25 What’s Next From MMO/Words of Wisdom - 1:08:50 So yes, we are putting a pause on The James Bond Character Study after this episode on George Lazenby. We do 10 minutes on how the Coronavirus forced MGM, UA, & Universal to move the release date & what it might mean for upcoming spring blockbusters. But James Bond will return as will we with this character study. Though as you’d probably agree, we’ll all have more fun with the study this coming fall before the release of No Time To Die. Until then, we go out with a bang. George Lazenby only sucked down shaken martinis in one film from the series, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, and we review the ever living daylights out of it. Though if you love every Bond film more than the last, welp, we’re harsh on this one. As we always say, hopefully you join us for all our shows because you enjoy them as shows. Perhaps we’ll agree with you at times, but let’s be honest. There’s no way we’ll always agree. So we want to hear from you on this one, and we welcome any feedback. In any event, we’ve always felt that honesty is the best policy, and we have to call them as we see them. On that note, we absolutely obliterate this film, and the hope is that you’ll have a fun listen regardless. You do get a non-spoiler section first with a Getting Into Character segment followed by a review of his performance. Then we dive into the plot of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service & fill this section with all kinds of segments that highlight the best & worst scenes, all the cinematic & moral arguments, & all the bad Bond title puns you can handle. Impolite Conversation: Religion and Politics

This month, Impolite Conversation goes to the movies to discuss the Liberty University-produced film The Trump Prophecy and what it tells us about evangelical culture and the connection between the religious right and Donald Trump. And then Dan and Tim chat some more about the film and What It All Means. (Spoiler: we didn't like it.) And in One Last Thing, Dan is tracking a serial killer, and Tim is watching a woman be killed serially. Some of the things we discussed in this episode: The Trump Prophecy is available to rent, but we wouldn't recommend it. Dr. Willenbrink provided the greatest summary of The Day After Tomorrow we've ever heard. The talking heads in The Trump Prophecy included Jerry Boykin and Michele Bachmann. Here are the supplements sold by the real Dr. Colbert. Dr. Willenbrink also introduced us to the term SAGE Cons, but not this kind. Tim brought up the short-lived, much-mourned TV show Firefly, and how the spaceship was a character on the show. One Last Thing should be like the music of "Karma Chameleon," not the lyrics of "Karma Chameleon." Dan's One Last Thing was the BBC series The ABC Murders (also available on Amazon Prime). Tim's One Last Thing was the Netflix series Russian Doll. JD Vance: the reluctant interpreter of Trumpism

The Ezra Klein Show

J.D. Vance's Hillbilly Elegy has been adopted as the book that explains Trumpism. It's the book that both Senator Mitch McConnell and Senator Rob Portman recommended as their favorite of 2016. It's a book Keith Ellison, the frontrunner to lead the DNC, brought up in our conversation last week. Everyone, on both sides of the aisle, has turned to Vance to explain What It All Means. All of which is a bit odd, because Vance's book is an awkward fit with Trumpism. As Vance describes it, it's about "what goes on in the lives of real people when the industrial economy goes south. It’s about reacting to bad circumstances in the worst way possible. It’s about a culture that increasingly encourages social decay instead of counteracting it." It's a memoir about growing up amidst a particular slice of the white working class — the Scots-Irish who settled in and around Appalachia — and the ways that both propelled Vance forward and held him back. It's a book about one man's story — a story that is universal in some ways, particular in others, but was certainly not written with Donald J. Trump in mind.Vance, today, works for an investment firm founded by Peter Thiel. He's an Iraq veteran and Yale-educated lawyer who fits comfortably among the elites he never expected to know. He's a conservative who doesn't like Trump, but has nevertheless become a favored interpreter for his movement. He's a private person who finds himself having shared the most intimate details of his life with total strangers. We talk about all that, as well as some specific debates that have emerged in the age of Trump, and that speak to issues in Vance's book:- The resentment members of the lower-middle class have towards the non-working poor - The ways in which the discussion over poor white communities has come to mirror the debate over poorer African-American communities- How Trump constructed an "other" that merged both marginalized communities and powerful elites- Slights Vance faced as a member of the military attending elite schools, and how that made him think about the broader debate over political correctness- The difference between "economic anxiety" and "cultural anxiety," and why it matters- How members of Vance's family reconcile their support for Trump with their close friendships with unauthorized immigrants- What he feels defines the values held by elites, and how they differ from those he grew up withAnd, as always, much more. Enjoy. You have to admit—some of those ink blotches do look sexualRC-2013-103: The Master (2012) Your browser does not support this audioPaul Thomas Anderson's The Master will be released on home media later this month—I'm on top of it. After making listeners jealous by bragging about being one of the lucky few who got to see the film projected properly on glorious 70 mm, I heap praise on DP Mihai Malamare for his use of the old-school film stock—the clarity, the depth of field, the rosy red colors of Philip Seymour Hoffman's nose! Noting that many were perplexed by the movie, I go on to explain my pet theories about What It All Means. The commentary spirals into a little bit of love fest, with me ladling more compliments on the casting choices and Anderson's daring, to-hell-with-convention screenwriting. I then go crazy by having the audacity to mildly criticize His Excellency Harvey Weinstein, resigning myself to never working in this town again. Questions addressed include: Which scenes are actually dreams? How old is Amy Adams? Why does Hoffman sing that song to Phoenix at the end? Bottom line, your desire to listen to this commentary track is an intergalactic implant from millions of years ago... Let's have some fun.To sync up with the commentary, cue up to the start of the movie. Then, hit "pause" just as The Weinstein Company logo fades completely to black, and hit "play" again on my countdown.   Listen to the mp3. Or get it from those pig fuckers over at iTunes.
