Welcome back, listeners! Today I'm solo on mic exploring a question that's inspired by a text chat I had with a friend: "Is your burnout preventable?" If you've ever found yourself plagued with exhaustion, resentful of all the things out of your control, and down the path to truly crippling physiological symptoms, this episode is for you. Summary: In this episode, we'll think critically about burnout, examining it from different angles. I'll reflect on a recent conversation with a friend and grapple with the question of whether burnout is inevitable or something we can fend off. We'll dissect burnout from three perspectives: "no," "maybe," and "yes," navigating through the complexities of stress management and self-care. Remember that burnout isn't a one-size-fits-all experience. It's about tuning into ourselves, understanding our triggers, and embracing the belief that we have the power to steer clear of burnout's stormy seas. Whether you're a firm believer in prevention or still on the fence, know that you're not alone in this journey. Reach out, seek support, and let's navigate through the waves together. Robert is an Inspirational Speaker, Hypnoacuitist, Dream Sculptor and published author. If you are wondering about what Hypnoacuity is, please listen to my conversation with this wonderful man on this podcast. One simple solution to lift your mood is to listen to music!Studies show that listening to music is like a workout for your brain. Not only does it ignite creativity, but it is a valuable tool for reducing stress, improving your mood and creating a more happy mindset. It's like a workout for your brain (as long as the music is upbeat and you like the music you're listening to). And a happier mindset brings more benefits beyond just feeling good. It can make you feel better about your job, give you the motivation to keep going in your job search and just downright feel good!I won't go further into the stats or studies of listening to music but if I were to give you any advice for this week, is to take the time and create a playlist of happy, encouraging music that you like so if you do feel down, you have your happy playlist to lift you back up!I know that if I feel stressed, anxious, or even nervous, I put on some happy jams, stand up and rock out. Jefferson Rogers is a hard-working family man from Saint George, Utah, who built his window replacement business from zero to 10 million in just 2 years. Jefferson's claim to fame is his incredible story of huge commitments that shifted his trajectory from a life on the couch to now being a CEO of a rapidly-accelerating company.Jefferson's new book, “All In,” takes you through the out-of-the-norm experiences he conquered to become the successful business owner he is today. He doesn't have a regular CEO story. His story begins on a couch of all places, where he decided he would move to a different state to get away from his comfortable environment. It's Jefferson's mission to help people like himself 10 years ago become millionaires too. Jefferson likes to say he runs a people development business, that just so happens to also sell windows. He leads from the front and believes that anything you set your mind to can be accomplished if you make big commitments and follow through for yourself. JEFFERSON AND I DISCUSS• His experience with following through and how his burning desire to be a man of his word changed his life trajectory.• How personal development is an essential part of growing a business. • How synchronicities begin to happen when you make big commitments to go all in to achieve a goal.• The power of choosing great mentors• Constantly reinvesting in yourselfFind out more about Jefferson and his amazing business: https://jkrwindows.com----------------------------------------POST A REVIEWGUEST BOOKINGS CLICK HEREFollow me on Social MediaNew Town Big Dreams podcast on FacebookInstagramLinkedinLuke Menkes Kelowna RealtorMy Personal Facebook PageSupport the show (https://paypal.me/lukemenkes)

When we are able to manage conflict, we are also able to nurture our relationships, collectively solve problems, learn from each other and minimize our burdens. While conflict can lead to positive outcomes, it’s a rare individual who nails it every time. SHOW NOTES Differences, disagreements and conflicts-these definitely get in the way of joy, meaning and ease in the workplace. Our laser-focused (HA!) co-hosts, Crina and Kirsten share isights into this topic from our fabulous listener focus group and provide some tools and strategies to deal with differences, disagreements and conflicts at work. Many thanks to our listener focus group. Crina and Kirsten appreciate so much the input of listeners into our show topics. It is one of the best parts of producing the podcast. There are lots of differences in the workplace - generational, personality type (outgoing, quiet, shy etc), approach to solving a problem, risk tolerance, education, experience, religion and of course political beliefs. Our focus group shares that they most worry about conflict resulting from aggressive communication style (such as a brusque or abrupt style), unclear expectations around policies, boundaries, what can and can’t be shared in terms of opinions, emotions and perspectives. Conflict creates a battle between our reason and our emotion. And feelings (disappointment, loss, grief, betrayal etc.) often fuel our conflicts. When relationships in the workplace are characterized by cooperation, trust, and fairness, the reward center of the brain is activated which encourages future interactions that promote employee trust, respect, and confidence, with employees believing the best in each other and inspiring each other in their performance (Geue, 2017). The Importance of Positive Relationships in the WorkplaceWhen we become angry, the amygdala, part of the limbic system in our brain, is flooded with hormones such as cortisol, adrenaline and testosterone and we become “high” on conflict. If we’re shown acknowledgment and feel that we’re heard, the front or neocortex part of the brain, which is responsible for higher thinking and reasoning, is flooded with serotonin, oxytocin and dopamine. These are hormones that are released when we experience trust and respect. Our listener focus group talked about times they felt they had handled conflict particular well or poorly. One listener said that when she does not handle conflict well, she shuts down and it robs her of her joy at work and makes her less effective.Another listener said that she feels she handles conflicts poorly when she is not empathic with the other person and fails to fully consider their position. Another reported that one of her successes was her ability to flex her communication style with a co-worker to diffuse the conflict. Note - it is possible that instead of her co-worker’s brain flooding with adrenaline and cortisol, it flooded with serotonin and dopamine! What are the strategies we use in conflict?Understanding the science of conflictAvoiding involves withdrawing from the situation in order to avoid conflict at all costs. This could mean leaving the solution to the passage of time or fate.Smoothing involves sweeping the disagreement “under the rug” and pretending that everything is pleasant, serene, and cooperative.Compromising involves each party getting something and giving up something.Battling involves fighting in a way that produces a clear winner and loser.Problem solving involves both parties first confronting the disagreement and then resolving it through collaboration. All of these strategies can be good - and we should probably be using all of them depending on the situation. In the context of all of these strategies - make an effort to find out the needs, concerns, be curious, and fears behind the other party’s position. Always be on the lookout for some of those bedrock needs that drive most people, such as security, economic well-being, a feeling of belonging, status, recognition, being regarded by others as being highly competent, and possessing power and control. Our focus group had some great suggestions. “Don’t catch the football” - let the ball dropBe rich not right - what do you want more - to do a great job or be rightFocus on the factsFocus on the here and nowHAND CLAP - what is right between your hands to address right now:Lean back and breatheConsider where you will get the most tractionPractice empathy, Educate herself about the viewpoints of others Understanding the root of the conflict and/or their ideasDo not compromise yourselfFind the PAIN POINT - and gentle ways to work through thatLook for intentionsAsk questions Challenge assumptionsEstablish agreements and policies and procedures on the front end At the end of it - we are humans and the root of conflict allows us to find our common humanity. And another great article.https://www.baltimoremagazine.com/special/how-to-manage-disagreements-with-others-in-the-workplace/

This week, we’re joined by Colleen Gallagher, a coach, consultant, author, and an evolutionary transformation specialist.Colleen is a childhood cancer survivor. She was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and told that she’d have difficulties bearing children and that she’d have to be on medication for the rest of her life. Aside from the pain and adversity coming from dealing with a horrible disease, Colleen also had to deal with peer rejection and being made fun of by her classmates. After several surgeries, she’s managed to pull through, but these experiences have stayed with her and played an important part in her becoming the person she is today. Her love for travel has pulled her through life, but even though she had worked for hugely successful companies and making really good money, like many of her coworkers, she still felt unhappy. She founded Colleen Gallagher International so she could empower leaders to become evolutionary leaders to flow with the evolution of humanity through lifestyle careers. All of her travels, studying and leadership retreats have allowed Colleen to gain a greater understanding of human potential, purpose, and how the online world is impacting human development.Colleen has created many systems and programs that will help you empower yourself and achieve a connection to what lies in your heart. One of them is a 12-week program called Live the Impossible, which takes you out of the information-overloaded world we live in, and provides you with a crystal clear view on what it is you actually want.Colleen has also condensed her experiences and findings into a book titled Live Your Truth. The book is based around a 5-step proven system that is meant to help you see that any dream can come true if you are living your truth, figure out how to become part of moving the world forward, find the courage to intoxicate the world with your truth and start living a life with no regrets. In our conversation, we canvas Colleen’s story of Inspired Evolution, the importance of connectivity and making the impossible possible!Connect with Colleen:Website: https://www.colleengallagher.co Twitter: https://twitter.com/col_gallagher1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheColleenGallagher/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/colleen_gallagher_/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/colleen-gallagher-81691661/ Colleen’s Story of Inspired EvolutionGrowing up in Detroit, Michigan, Colleen was having what most people would call a pretty normal childhood. That is until one day, during a basketball session, she collapsed onto the court not being able to catch her breath. She was rushed to the ER and was subsequently diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Surgeries, medication and a difficult situation at school had Colleen switching from a normal childhood, into a world of having to fight a deadly disease and struggling with adversity on a daily basis. Her appearance changed as a result of her treatment and her peers were unable to show compassion at the time, some even acting in a very cruel manner.“People were calling me ugly… I was dating an African-American at the time and people would say like “Oh, did he choke you out?”, and they would say really mean things about racism.” - Colleen GallagherWhile undergoing treatment for her cancer, she witnessed an argument between two parents of another girl that was with her at the hospital, which affected her world-views immensely. “Her dad screamed at her mom, saying: “The only reason we’re in this position to not pay for her treatment, is because you are a stay-at-home mom”. And what imprinted in me at that time was two things… One, that you needed money to have love and two, that you needed money to not die.” - Colleen GallagherIn years to come, Colleen developed a money-hungry, corporate attitude. She got a degree in Marketing at Michigan State University and throughout her studies, she gained valuable experience by taking paid internships. After graduation, she started working as a sales engineer for a 23 billion-dollar company. Colleen loved traveling her entire life, and not being able to do so made her switch jobs, and she quickly got hired by a $400 million company and moved to New Zealand. She was able to travel and experience new things, got promotions, she was making good money, but she still wasn’t feeling happy. In January 2018, she decided to take a leap of fate, and since then she became an evolutionary transformational coach, she started her own consulting company, developed numerous programs and had her book published.Making a Commitment to Yourself“Find that thing where you’re more committed to it than you are committed to the fear, or the illusion of fear that exists.” - Colleen GallagherColleen shares with us her stories of committing to herself, in terms of leaving behind a life of partying and recreational use of drugs and channeling her energy into the activities that really mattered and were meaningful to her. Doing yoga and meditation for 4 hours a day may not be everyone’s idea of fun and fulfillment, and Colleen points out that everyone’s commitment is going to be different. The trick is to find activities that you find most enjoyable and go all in because it is the best way to rekindle your motivation and love for life.“It could be dancing for you, it could be music… it could be anything! Whatever that commitment is - go to that. Because that’s what will give you back the heart of your life.” - Colleen GallagherConnecting with Your Greatest Truth“If you create the success and you’ve haven’t evolved that connectivity that comes from within, and your connectivity of what matters to you in the world… you’re going to be addicted to the success pattern.” - Colleen GallagherConnecting with your truth means being involved with things that resonate with what truly matters to you in the world. Being successful without getting in line with your highest values will lead you to become addicted to the outright empty definition of success. The emptiness of that definition comes from the fact that it is not your own. It does not come from your heart and it is not correlating with the things most important to you. No one should be allowed to tell you what success looks like and feels for you.“Everyone gets to have their own path. Everyone gets to have their own idea of success… Whatever success you desire, make it your success, connect to your dream of success.” - Colleen GallagherOne of the key steps in connecting with your truth is trough redefining your environment. This includes mainly the little things that you do when you’re acting from the heart. Things you’re browsing online, things you enjoy within your own time. Looking for consistencies in your environment, in things that you surround yourself with on a daily basis will provide answers to the question of your truth. In those patterns, you will find those activities you are performing effortlessly and you will be able to make a connection within.“Where do you give generously always, that it doesn’t feel like work, like, you’re giving just to give?” - Colleen GallagherColleen passionately invites you to live the life you were always meant to live by looking within and connecting with the deepest aspects that were always a part of you, to begin with. She urges us to:“Just go, be the most epic, conscious, badass human being that you are meant to be on this planet!” - Colleen Gallagher See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
