Welcome to Episode 45 of TableSetters! Devin and Steve are here to break down the deal that has sent shockwaves through baseball: Juan Soto's record-shattering 15-year, $765MM contract with the New York Mets. In a move that will be talked about for decades, the Mets have outbid the Yankees and Red Sox to secure one of the game's most transcendent hitters, forever changing the course of their franchise. We dive deep into the stunning details of the deal—no deferrals, a massive $75MM signing bonus, and the unique opt-out clause that could push this contract to an unprecedented $805MM. How did Steve Cohen's Mets pull this off, and what went wrong for the Yankees, who let Soto slip away after he helped lead them to an AL pennant? For a franchise that has spent years chasing its next title, losing out on Soto may be a bitter pill to swallow, and we explore what this means for the Yankees' future plans. But this moment is about Soto's greatness—a generational hitter whose elite plate discipline and all-around excellence make him a once-in-a-lifetime talent. At just 26 years old, Soto's already legendary career enters its prime in Queens, where he joins Francisco Lindor to form a lineup that could rival the league's very best. Is this the Mets' version of Soto and Judge 2.0, and can this duo push New York's other team to its first title since 1986? We also look ahead: the Mets aren't done yet. With questions surrounding Pete Alonso's free agency, needs in the starting rotation, and a bullpen to address, Steve Cohen's war chest is still open for business. What happens next, and how does the rest of the league—especially the Yankees—respond to this monumental shift in power? It's a franchise-altering deal, a crushing blow for their crosstown rivals, and the beginning of a new era for the Mets. Don't miss this can't-miss emergency episode. The World Cup season has arrived, and with that, we are back with our regularly scheduled post-race banter! Fort William went off with a bang, providing one of the most thrilling and engaging season openers we've seen. Numerous team changes were finally put on display against the clock; the track was dry, fast, and ridiculously rough, and the level of racing in all four categories was tighter and more intense than ever. With plenty of topics to hit, like speed suits, electronic suspension lockouts, and Dakotah's mega-rise bars, it was awesome to have the crew back together to chat about elite downhill racing. "Following a highly successful drill program in 2022, we are excited to be returning to the Eau Claire resource and Percival Prospect. Our goal is to continue to expand the Eau Claire resource, which we know is open in all directions, while also looking for new discoveries elsewhere on the Eau Claire land package which we believe are possible at the Percival Prospect and to the East at our new targets discovered along the Cannard Deformation Zone," commented Tim Clark, CEO of Fury. "Additionally, we are thrilled that Fury will start the year with C$16.2 million in the treasury and about C$60 million in current value in shares in Dolly Varden Silver, which arguably makes Fury one of the best-financed juniors in the sector." Fury lays out its exploration plans for the Eau Claire project located in the Eeyou Istchee Territory in the James Bay region of Quebec in this episode. In 2023, the Company plans to drill between 15,000 and 20,000 metres at the project with the goals of 1) continuing expansion of the high-grade Eau Claire resource; 2) following up on the 2022 success at the Percival Prospect 14 kilometres to the east of Eau Claire; and 3) advancing several early-stage exploration targets along the Cannard Deformation Zone to the drill ready stage. https://furygoldmines.com/ Ticker: FURY Presentation: https://furygoldmines.com/site/assets/files/6456/fury_ir_pdac_mar2023_final.pdf Press Releases discussed: https://furygoldmines.com/site/assets/files/6464/2024-04-11-nr-fury-f5124gihoo.pdf Sign up for our free newsletter and receive interview transcripts, stock profiles and investment ideas: http://eepurl.com/cHxJ39 Fury Gold Mines is a Mining Stock Education sponsor/advertiser. Are you a pneumatic tube operator?A COO is not a COO is not a COO. While the title Chief Operating Officer should indicate range of responsibilities, it does little to describe them.Same for a Buyer, a Plant Manager, or an New Product Development Manager. These titles have very different meanings in a $5M, a $100MM, and a $1B company. They also have very different responsibilities in a contract machine shop, a pharmaceutical business, and an international defense Tier 2 contractor. And they have different responsibilities and expectations as a single manufacturer or distributor changes volumes, markets, or ownership. The plant manager of a $50MM contract metal working company was in over his head as it grew to $75MM. He left to become the COO of a less than $10MM machine shop.So who is responsible for ensuring that an employee or team grows its competencies as the needs of the business change? Those needs change frequently and never decline. Even plummeting sales do not lessen compliance, performance, and competency expectations of the market. Lifelong learning is a great phrase, and a requirement of the culture embedded in any manufacturer who intends to endure. Daily constant learning is an even more important phrase and element of culture, as it implies lifelong. Each employee of every business owns responsibility for willingly learning and expanding skillsets and knowledge base. Each leader at any level owns that responsibility not only for herself, but for every member of her team.Keeping pace with today's needs is basic need. Anticipating and meeting tomorrow's requirements is an equally basic need. How do you know if the requirements of your job are changing faster than you are? Of your team? Of your entire business? Of your entire supply chain? Of all of your constituencies?Jobs do not stay the same. Careers do not either. If you go to work today to do the same things you did yesterday, come home, and go in again tomorrow to do the same things again, your company is in trouble, as is your job.Sadly, the Social Security Administration continues to use a list of active unskilled jobs that includes "pneumatic tube operator" in considering disability claims. Dowel inspector and shelling nuts are two other jobs it deems in significant numbers to decline benefits to people it believes could do those. Good luck finding one of those openings at a facility near you.How long until the job you currently perform is just another embarrassing kernel of the SSA list of plentiful unskilled opportunities?

Is there enough of a 75mm stronghold Downunder to keep Scarpa producing the t2 and t4? Tune in to hear our thoughts on the matter. We also sneak in a cheeky prank call to Eastern Mountain Center, a well-known ski center in Melbourne to hear an honest opinion of where they think telemark is heading into the future.

NEW PODCAST Hey All! I've started a second show completely devoted to the field of Ontology which is another huge passion of mine. Please check out The Eric Scheien Podcast which is an ontological podcast where I break down distinctions of human consciousness as an access to enhancing performance. Summary I received this email last year about Trupanion and wanted to address some points made. The entire email is here: Hi Eric,   I come in peace as a Chester County native who still very much prefers Wawa over Sheetz, despite living in Pittsburgh. You seemed very open to hearing counterpoints, as per your podcast on TRUP, so I wanted to give you some things to chew on.    You made two points (I'll summarize): 1) It is justifiable to exclude development expenses from IRR and 2) there are "no accounting shenanigans" going on.    I would love, then, to hear your thoughts on the following:   Let's first level set with the IRR methodology: the company allocates fixed expenses between Subscription and Other based on their relative revenue contributions. This includes a pro-rata allocation of G&A expenses.    So let's get into G&A expenses -- what's in there? Typical back office stuff, finance, accounting, etc. But also a couple million bucks of rental income related to subleasing of the company HQ. Per their 2019 10-K: "The change was primarily due to a $3.1 million increase in compensation expenses, a $0.8 million increase in professional service fees, and a $1.5 million increase in depreciation expense mainly due to owning our home office building since August 2018, partially offset by a total of $2.6 million in savings from additional lease income and less rental expense."   The rental income has the effect of reducing reported G&A (i.e. it's netted against expenses). So my first question for you is as follows: if you firmly believe development expenses that aren't related to acquiring new pets are justifiably excluded from IRR calculations, how are you comfortable with several million dollars of sublease income that's clearly not related to acquiring subscription pets benefitting IRR?   Next up is their pet-food VIE. Also from the 10-K: The Company has also entered into a series of agreements to provide ancillary services to the variable interest entity at cost. The Company provided $1.2 million and $1.4 million of these services for the years ended December 31, 2020 and 2019, respectively, which were recorded against its operating expenses.   So TRUP provides back office support to the VIE and reduces its reported opex to account for the compensation for providing the services.    So the next question is the same as the first: Would you bucket this in line with "development expenses" as being rightly excluded from IRR, or are you OK with the company getting the tailwind from the expense reduction?   Now here's where the situation becomes a bit more nefarious. The VIE has received a total of $9.5 million of funding from TRUP, including $7.0MM of preferred capital and $2.5MM from a line of credit. Think for a minute about what's going on here: the company pushed $9.5MM of cash down to another legal entity, and now reduces its reported OpEx for services provided to the VIE, with the payments being made with money TRUP used to finance the VIE. Money coming out of one pocket and right into the other.    Third question: Do you think this is an accounting shenanigan?   Lastly, management knows PAC is getting out of hand and pulled a fast one in the first quarter to make it look like they've got things under control. Aren't you the slightest bit curious how they're going to hold PAC at $280 for the balance of this year in an increasingly competitive environment?   Management casually slipped in the following comment during the earnings call: "We expect stock-based compensation to be around $6-$7 million per quarter for the remainder of the year." Coupled with the $8.4 million of SBC already booked in 1Q'21, TRUP is on track to recognize $28 million of SBC expense in 2021. Putting this figure into perspective, it is 3x higher than last year's $8.9 million of total recognized SBC expense. Last year SBC expense was 1.8% of revenue; this year it will be 4.1%.   What does SBC have to do with PAC and IRR?    Well, for the purposes of calculating PAC (a key input into the IRR calculation), management excludes SBC because it's non-cash. By upping the portion paid in the form of equity, management is artificially reducing the level of PAC incorporated in their IRR calculation. in 1Q'21, fully-loaded PAC (including SBC) was $328/pet, representing 22.4% y/y growth. SBC embedded in Sales and Marketing was $40/pet -- leaps and bounds above historical levels ($20/pet). See the charts at the bottom of the email. Had SBC been more in-line with historical levels ($20/pet), PAC (for the purposes of the company's IRR calculation) would have been ~$310...much closer to the full year figure I was expecting.   This is all a long winded way of saying, if you were to run the company's IRR calc with PAC of $315 or above, there is absolutely no way they would be within the boundaries of their self-imposed 30-40% target range. The only reason they'll print numbers within range this year is a result of their increased use of SBC in compensating their employees.     The table below illustrates Restricted Stock grants (not expense, but grants) since 1Q'19. The grants in the most recent quarter -- $66 million! -- jump off of the page and explain why SBC will be elevated in the quarters to come. But don't just take my word for it. From what I can tell, we both respect Buffett a lot, and here's what he's got to say on the topic: "I have no objection to the granting of options. Companies should use whatever form of compensation best motivates employees -- whether this be cash bonuses, trips to Hawaii, restricted stock grants or stock options. But aside from options, every other item of value given to employees is recorded as an expense."     When it comes to SBC, RSUs are a functional cash equivalent, so there is no legitimate justification to exclude the related expense from any measure of profitability -- GAAP or otherwise.         Perhaps using RSUs makes sense for the time being given the extreme overvaluation of TRUP. Management can handsomely compensate employees and gloss over the dilutive impact on the company's financials. But what happens when shares are back at $30, but territory partners are expecting their compensation to remain flat in nominal terms? Shareholders will either be 1) massively diluted or 2) the company would have to lean more heavily on cash compensation. The latter of the two options is a functional non-starter at the current juncture given the company's persistently negative free cash flow (another topic the bulls don't understand, but I'll let sleeping dogs lie on this one).   Last question: Do you believe SBC is a true expense? If it is, should the company be including it in its IRR calculation?     Management updated guidance, and frankly, I think the financial outlook is worse than I was expecting. "Adjusted Operating Income" -- which is ex. SBC, D&A, and Pet Acquisition -- is forecast at $75MM. PAC -- ex. SBC -- is forecast at $66MM. That leaves us to $9MM. "Development expense" will be $4MM (at the mid), SBC is $28MM, D&A will be $12MM, resulting in a pre-tax net loss of $35MM. This is larger than the company's cumulative net loss for the past six years combined!      I know this is a battleground stock and don't expect everyone to come around. But I also think: 1) there's only one set of correct answers to the questions I've laid out above, 2) none of the afforementioned points are "dumb", and 3) management is using sleight of hand to paint a picture of the company that is out of step with reality.  As someone who puts a lot of value in associating with the right people, I certainly don't appreciate the games / shenanigans that Daryl and team are pulling.      $MM Adjusted Operating Income 75 - PAC (66) - Development expense (4) - SBC (28) - D&A (12) Pre-tax Income (35)   HELP OUT THE PODCAST If you like The Intelligent Investing Podcast, please consider leaving a rating and review on Apple Podcasts. On episode #46 we welcome Alex McIntosh, CEO & co-founder of Thrive natural care.  Thrive designs and sells high-performance skincare, powered by regenerative plants.   Since 2013, Thrive’s team of American and Costa Rican entrepreneurs, farmers and scientists have produced new-to-market botanicals for the company’s products by means of an inspiring regenerative farming model that helps restore degraded ecosystems and communities. Thrive’s vision and 500% growth over the past year has attracted retail partners such as Whole Foods and Amazon, national media such as Travel+Leisure and Esquire, and investors from Clorox, Nestlé, Unilever, venture capital and the NBA. Prior to Thrive, McIntosh was the founding Director of Sustainability & Corporate Citizenship at Nestlé Waters North America, the $4B division of the world's largest consumer water company. At Nestlé Waters, Alex developed the vision and strategic plan, and provided hands-on leadership to build the corporation's first sustainability program from the ground up during a time of intense social scrutiny.  Prior to Nestlé, Alex was Director of Philanthropy at The Nature Conservancy, where he helped raise a record $75MM in private capital for two of the largest watershed conservation projects in the organization's history. Male grooming market is booming global.  In fact, from the $15.5 billion in worldwide sales in 2012 - the Male grooming market is estimated to be worth about $29.14 billion U.S. dollars by 2024.  In our 45 minute discussion on Sourcing Matters.show we explore how personal care, especially for men, is a category yet to mesh with modern consumer interest and demands.  The blue goop we shave with will increasingly be a thing of the past.  McIntosh and team see this horizon when this macro trend leaning towards safer and cleaner ingredients will mesh with the growth projections in personal care.   This is a sound business  set on leaving this place better than they found it. Looking forward, levering an impressive background which had him participating in those diverse stakeholder seats - Alex McIntosh will continue to build Thrive as an example; better yet, a model for a "regenerative" supply and business across any sector.     www.SourcingMatters.show

They appeared on my radar after recently announced its launch in the U.S. with $75MM in debt financing from Citigroup. Pagaya will use the funding to create a new leveraged fund suite called the Opportunity Fund. Financial technology has come a long way to improve the experience of individual investors, but there has been little progress made at the institutional level. After learning that the company also secured a 20-year BlackRock veteran as chief investment officer, I wanted to find out more about how Pagaya is working with the largest lending marketplaces to retool the backend and deliver better returns for institutions. Founded in Tel Aviv in 2016, Pagaya has raised $200MM in capital to date, mainly from institutional investors. Utilizing state-of-the-art, machine learning algorithms, Pagaya also serves the institutional markets with a focus on independent, alternative asset management. Being highly data-driven and fragmented in nature, scaling up investments in alternative credit, including consumer credit, demands a new approach--one in which traditional tools & investment strategies become increasingly irrelevant. Pagaya CEO, Gal Krubiner shares his FinTech StartUp story and how he specializes in innovative & sophisticated credit structure products (ABS structures).

www.adamispharmaceuticals.com “Strong Buy” 12-month Price Target of $15 - $18 indicates a potential price gain of 224% to 269%* 22-page research report by Harbinger Research details Investment Opportunity, Valuation Comparables... includes Profit and Loss Models thru FY2022. Brian Connell, CFA Investment Highlights: Net $23.7 million in recent funding and NASDAQ up-listing constitutes “Major Corporate Milestones” – institutional and retail visibility greatly enhanced. First product (Epinephrine Pre-filled Syringe) ready for FDA 505(B)(2) filing soon - early ’15 approval likely, leading to $30 - $50 million in annual sales over next 2 – 3 years. Completed purchase of the 3M Taper Dry Powder Inhaler (DPI) technology in December 2013 – creating potential branded generic competitor for Glaxo-SmithKline (NYSE: GSK) and its $7.7 billion global market.  Two additional products will likely receive FDA approval in 2016 and 2017 - eventual annual revenues of $30 million or more expected for each. Revenues starting in FY2015, with rapid growth in FY2016, FY2017 and FY2018 - estimated at $16.75MM, $49.45MM and $93.12MM, respectively – all subject to FDA approvals and market conditions of course, but Adamis has certainly turned the corner as a “Developing Specialty Pharmaceuticals Co.” Four early stage biotech products focused on the treatment of prostate cancer - given that the Company’s current priority is “to get to market” with its specialty pharma products, the biotech segment could create a win-fall for investors through a spin-out, IPO, sale to a larger biotech firm, or through royalties/marketing partnerships. It’s like a free-call option for informed investors. Company Overview: Adamis is a biopharmaceutical company engaged in the development and commercialization of specialty pharmaceutical and biotechnology products in the therapeutic areas of respiratory disease, allergy, oncology and immunology. ADMP is developing low cost therapeutic alternatives for the treatment of anaphylaxis, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and allergic rhinitis. Within the Company's biotechnology pipeline is a novel cell-based therapeutic cancer vaccine and three drug candidates for the treatment of prostate cancer. *Based on market close, March 19, 2014
