ONE TWO, Freddy's coming for you...THREE FOUR, Better lock your door...Forty years ago this November saw the release of one of the most influential horror films of all time directed by the late, great Wes Craven who would gradually be acknowledged as one of the true masters of the horror genre having directed iconic genre classics before this (The Hills Have Eyes, The Last House on the Left) and after, most notably Scream which would come out twelve years later. And what he created as both writer and director was a truly terrifying concept: An otherworldly monster who could invade your dreams to murder you while you were asleep. :o That monster was of course Freddy Krueger played by Robert England, sporting a crinkled fedora and most memorably a leather glove with sharpened razor blades protruding from each finger. Freddy was the stuff of nightmares and quickly caught fire as a hugely popular film icon. Fortunately, there were folks on the side of good to fight and hopefully defeat this new evil force....for this first film, they were lead by mild-mannered teenager Nancy played by Heather Langenkamp. And she had help including her father played by John Saxon (Enter the Dragon) and her boyfriend by a young, baby-faced Johnny Depp in his film debut. This episode, Duncan takes us back to a film that harnessed serious star power... before they were stars. Jeff Bridges, Sally Field, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Robert England make the screen sweat in this balmy, Southern story based on Charles Gaines' 1972 novel. It's STAY HUNGRY (1976) directed by '70s verite hero, Bob Rafelson. While Duncan believes the film's bona fides earn it the top trophy, Lex doesn't sway easy. In the end, it's a match of muscle, but we leave it to you to decide who's right. Does this one pump so hard it blows? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This week on the show we're following Robert Englad from one nightmare to another as we cover Nightmare Cafe, an extremely short-lived series about a mysterious diner and some ghosts who are forced to work there. In this episode, the ghosts have to help a detective solve a murder that occurred either last year or 30 years ago. We also get some creepy sibling affection, some exaggerated drunk acting by one of the hardest working men in showbiz, and the most insane looking CG transformation ever committed to tape. Too bad the show kind of sucks. If you like the show, give us a rating on Apple Podcasts. And follow us on X (formerly Twitter) at @weirdcenter (for now) or Instagram/Threads at @weirdnesspodcast (where you can suggest TV shows we should cover on the podcast)!

Lin Shaye talks being named the Godmother of Horror, her wide range of acting roles, becoming the face of the Insidious franchise, and the time she auditioned for Jack Nicholson! About Lin: Born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, Lin Shaye loved “storytelling” so much that even as a child and knew that she was destined to act. She performed in plays at the University of Michigan and later was accepted into Columbia University's Master of Fine Arts program in acting, from which she graduated. While in NY she also studied with Uta Hagan, Stella Adler, and Lee Strasberg. After graduation, she worked with the best and brightest in New York theater, including the infamous Joseph Papp. Shaye made her film debut in New York in “Hester Street” where she portrayed a Polish prostitute, to her mother's chagrin. Shortly thereafter, she took a gamble and flew to Los Angeles after hearing that Jack Nicholson was interested in meeting her for the role. She was cast in his film “Goin' South.” Shaye has become undoubtedly one of the industry's greatest chameleons. The Farrelly Brothers cast her in a series of memorable characters beginning with their 1994 hit comedy “Dumb and Dumber”, and then as the infamous landlady in “Kingpin” opposite Woody Harrelson, and again as the character Magda, the sun-withered neighbor of Cameron Diaz in their hit film “There's Something About Mary.” Shaye was also unforgettable as the KISS-hating mom in “Detroit Rock City” and as Sonia, the tough German/Swedish coach in “Boat Trip” with Cuba Gooding, Jr. In a dramatic change of pace, she received critical acclaim in "The Hillside Strangler" as the alcoholic mother opposite Nick Turturro and C. Thomas Howell. The horror genre also found Lin starting with a cult favorite "Critters" and then on to Wes Craven's “Nightmare on Elm Street” which paved the way for more in the genre. She worked on a trio of movies with director Tim Sullivan:, “2001 Maniacs,” starring opposite Robert Englund, its sequel, “2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams” and Sullivan's "Chillerama". Shaye also starred in the cult classic “Snakes on a Plane” opposite Samuel L. Jackson, and the independent films "The Signal", "Jack Goes Home", "Abattoir", "Buster's Mal Heart" and "The Midnight Man" reuniting with Robert England.. In 2010 she found herself in the blockbuster hit “Insidious” directed by James Wan, which led to “Insidious Chapter 2, “Insidious: Chapter 3,” and the successful 4th film in the series "Insidious: The Last Key" in which Shaye had now had become according to James Wan: “the name of the franchise.” She also starred in Sony's “The Grudge" directed by Nicolas Pesce and the feature "Dreamkatcher" which she served as an executive producer. Shaye served as a producer and starred opposite horror icon Tobin Bell in “The Call” directed by Timothy Woodward. She most recently starred in “Ted Bundy:American Boogeyman” and next appears in the film “Frank & Penelope”. Shaye has a solid resume in television as well with guest appearances which include "American Gothic", and "Still the King". She appeared in recurring role as “Dottie” in Showtime's “Penny Dreadful:City of Angels” series. She received a 2020 Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Guest Performer in a Digital Drama Series for “Eastsiders” on Netflix. She most recently completed shooting the lead role in the series “Ellen” directed by Clif Prowse and Derek Lee. Shaye resides in Los Angeles and is a lifetime member of The Actors Studio. It's always a party when Devyn Ray drops in to talk about horror, and this week we're covering a film that is one of the less popular slasher films of the late 90's: Urban Legend! It boasts a cast that includes; Jared Leto, Alicia Witt, Rebecca Gayheart, Tara Reid, Loretta Devine, Brad Dourif, and even our beloved Robert England. This film may not be a perfect one, but it sure is a lot a fun to watch, and gab about. We talk about all of the urban legends included in the plot of this horror gem, and discuss one of the greatest villain reveals in modern cinema (too much praise? I think not). After the success of ALIEN, you'd think that Dan O'Bannon's screenwriting career would have really taken off, but due to a very public battle over the screen credits on that film, that unfortunately wasn't the case. The good news is that O'Bannon's ALIEN co-writer Ronald Shusett had a project that he'd been working on prior to ALIEN about a small New England town that was overtaken by the undead, and he invited O'Bannon to help him out with the screenplay. The resulting film was DEAD & BURIED, directed by Gary Sherman, although O'Bannon's contributions to the script are disputed (mostly by O'Bannon himself). In this episode, we'll discuss the extent of O'Bannon's involvement, plus the filming of the cult film itself, which featured early credits from genre stalwarts such as Robert England and Stan Winston. Thank Freddy for Wes Craven! On this episode of Kill By Kill, we're getting serious - mostly - about one of the best horror films to emerge from the 1990s, Wes Craven's New Nightmare. Gena & Patrick are joined by Birth Movies Death writer and Horror Movie A Day author Brian Collins as we dig into the pure Hollywood tale of the lengths one master moviemaker will go to torture his leading lady... onscreen, of course. Along the way we talk about eel punctures, stabbing Freddy in the dick, the special hell of Hollywood assistants, and why people misunderstand the connection between New Nightmare and Scream. Plus, we delve into what makes Heather Langenkamp such an incredible star and John Saxon an icon for the ages. On this episode we venture to the world of acting, I had a chance to conduct an interview with actress Linzi Gray who is born and raised in Richmond, Virginia. Hey everyone and thanks for joining us for the first episode of 80’s In August 2019. “What is this ‘80’s in August’ nonsense?”, you ask? Well, it’s a complete bullshit excuse of a theme month that came about because I’m lazy and thought a theme month would make picking films easier. So I saw that August was the 8th month of the year and immediately went to “80’s”. This is the logic you’re getting here. It’s really sad and pathetic, no? Anyway, it also allows me to bother Luke with films from the 80’s that I really love, and gives Luke an excuse to pick one non-horror film to review each year so that’s neat. This one is all my pick though, and we are talking all about Robert England’s “976-Evil”. I love this one, and since it doesn’t fit in with our usual motif, I figured it’d be a good one to start this year’s 80’s-fest! Hope you have a good time with this nutty little film. Music On This Episode (in order of appearance); "347 Midnight Demons"-Carpenter Brut "The Number Of The Beast"-Iron Maiden

Tony Todd is a deeply beloved horror icon with a well earned place among the pantheon of horror actors like Robert England, Kane Hodder, and Gunnar Hansen. If there was a horror Mount Rushmore, his face would certainly be on it and it is entirely because of his soulfully terrifying performance as Candyman in 1992. The subject of Candyman has been very hot in the past couple weeks ever since Jordan Peele announced that his production company, MonkeyPaw, will be helming the next installation. Many people are saying it's a reboot but according to Variety it will be a spiritual sequel to the original, and will return audiences to the original location of Cabrini Greene. A lot of people, myself included, are pretty relieved that this is not going to be a remake or a reboot - because we're sick of complete reimaginings of our beloved horror properties. However, as fans, a lot of us still want more from the original films but we want to see new life breathed into them - different perspectives, different directors, different storylines but hopefully in this case, not different actors. It has not been announced yet but, my fingers are tightly crossed in hoping that Tony Todd will return as Candyman. The truth is, nobody could have pulled off such a memorably chilling performance as Tony Todd, and nobody else could possibly do justice to the hook-handed boogeyman that Tony turned into an icon, singlehandedly. Tony just accepted a lifetime achievement award at The New York Horror Film Festival for his body of work across such films as Platoon, The Night of the Living Dead remake, The Crow, Candyman, The Final Destination Series, The Hatchet Series, and most recently Hell Fest. Speaking to him was a tremendous honor, we talked a lot about his acting process, music, movies, horror and he gave us his two cents on Jordan Peele's Candyman. You can get in touch with Tony on Twitter @TonyTodd54 and @Tonytoddofficial on instagram where you can find announcements on all his projects and appearances. Top pieces of insight from Tony Todd: Be Well Rounded. Tony emphasized that his acting training included a multitude of different disciplines that seemingly were unrelated to acting like ballroom dancing, horseback riding, fencing, all of which deepend his understanding of movement, art, and ultimately served his acting, because exposure to all of these disciplines taught him larger concepts about humanity that better enabled him to find truth in the scripts he read and the parts he played. This is a huge concept that a lot of artists miss. To this day he frequently attends multiple museums and travels extensively. Actors, directors, writers - creatives of all stripes thrive best when they are exposed to multiple cultural disciplines. So go to museums, travel, immerse yourself in different things that enable you to grow you as a person, it all serves your art at the end of the day. Find a partner who gets it. Acting along with just about any creative endeavor, is incredibly difficult, and requires long stretches of time away from home and years of uncertainty. When seeking a partner, it behooves you to find someone who can support you emotionally and not discourage or distract you from your craft or your pursuit. It's easy to get bogged down by the minutia of reality which compounds into major digressions that take you away from your work. Find someone who can understand the struggle, and the hours and energy spent on your project and can give you the fuel to keep going. Not someone who's going to nag, guilt, or distract you from your mission. Trust the process - There's no expectation on when you're supposed to excel or bloom. Tony was 32 when he was given his first big break in Oliver Stone's Platoon and 38 when he got his signature role in Candyman. It's a perilous business and you can't lose sight of that. As Tony says, don't suddenly give up on what you spent years building. You never know when it's going to happen, so all you can do is trust the process, and be prepared.

Wahoooooo it's Wes Craven's New Nightmare...the one where they make a movie about making a movie with people from the movie in it and Freddy is in it but he's Robert England but also Freddy.
