Join Bob Johnston and his wife Lynn on this episode of "Being Catholic" on Catholic Spirit Radio as they delve into the complex history of slavery. Broadcasting across various frequencies in Central and Northern Illinois, Bob explores the widely misunderstood and often distorted narratives surrounding slavery. Drawing from Thomas Sowell's essay "The Real History of Slavery" in the book "Black Rednecks and White Liberals," Bob highlights how slavery was a global phenomenon affecting all races and civilizations. He underscores that the institution of slavery was not based on race but rather on power dynamics, where the stronger enslaved the weaker. This episode aims to correct historical inaccuracies and provide a broader understanding of slavery's impact on the world and its lingering misconceptions. Tune in to learn about the extensive efforts made by Western civilization, particularly under the influence of Christianity, to abolish slavery, and how these efforts were unique in the annals of history. This episode promises to be an enlightening exploration of a topic that remains relevant and poignant today.
“You ask me what makes Rockefeller the unquestioned leader in our group. Well, it is simple. In business we all try to look ahead as far as possible. Some of us think we are pretty able. But Rockefeller always sees a little further ahead than any of us—and then he sees around the corner.” -John Archbold I've been listening to a "Great Course" on Audible. It's by a man of the left and is therefore alienating and a bit dull. He manages to critique Isaac Newton, the Bible, and Great Britain in the first two hours. “Often it is those who are most critical of a ‘Eurocentric' view of the world who are most Eurocentric when it comes to the evils and failings of the human race.” -Thomas Sowell, Black Rednecks and White Liberals

“History offers not simply a chronicle of events but, more importantly, opportunities to gain insights about the human condition from the experience of other times and places,” writes Thomas Sowell in his provocatively titled book Black Rednecks and White Liberals. “That is, it offers not merely facts but explanations.” Yet history's capacity to benefit us is naturally limited by our natural biases. “History cannot be a reality check for visions when history is itself shaped by visions.” To learn how to extract beneficial explanations from history, therefore, we must first learn how to recognize our biases, pre-conceptions, worldviews, and visions. Saving Elephants host Josh Lewis is joined by the Conservative Historian Belisarius Aves to explore the various schools of historical thought and how conservatism might instruct us to approach history. About Belisarius Aves Belisarius Aves (or Bel for short) is the founder and publisher of the Conservative Historian YouTube channel and podcast. “History is too important to be left to the left,” writes Bel. “The Conservative Historian provides content and opinions on conservative thinking through the prism of history.” You can follow Bel on Twitter @BelAves

https://youtu.be/XJHHIeK7-sY Educational and intellectual performance is a readily documented area where the persistence of culture can be tested. As late as the First World War, white soldiers from various Southern states scored lower on mental tests than black soldiers from various Northern states. Not only did black soldiers have the advantage of better schools in the North, they also had an opportunity for the Southern culture to begin to erode in their new surroundings. Over the years, much has been made of the fact that blacks score lower than whites nationwide on mental tests. From this, some observers have concluded that this is due to a racial difference and others have concluded that this is due to some deficiency or bias in the tests. But neither explanation would account for white Southerners' mental test scores in the First World War. - Thomas Sowell, Economic Facts and Fallacies BitChute
Surely you've heard that slavery is the cause of all of America's race issues. We've heard, ad nauseum, how slavery catalyzed the power dynamic between white and black citizens. When we see the statistics surrounding murder rates, fatherlessness, low-income, and poor schooling - it is supposedly obvious that white people have set themselves apart from their black counterparts through the ubiquitous effects of white slave owners towards black slaves. https://youtu.be/b2gsY9me_2E Intellectuals have been particularly prominent among those who have turned the black redneck culture into a sacrosanct symbol of racial identity. This includes both black and white intellectuals, though the latter predominate numerically and in terms of influence through the media and academia. Intellectuals have promoted misconceptions of history, misreadings of contemporary life, and counterproductive notions of how to prepare for the future. - Thomas Sowell, Black Rednecks and White Liberals (p. 52) Erec Smith is the co-founder and co-editor of FBT, Writing Fellow for Heterodox Academy, Associate Professor of Rhetoric, York College of Pennsylvania, author of the 2020 book, A Critique of Anti-racism in Rhetoric and Composition: The Semblance of Empowerment. It's a must-read that every person, religious and non-religious, should buy and peruse every night before bed. It'll make you think harder, pray more ardently, and understand your civilization better." — Ben Shapiro, host of "The Ben Shapiro Show" "Dennis Prager's commentary on Exodus will rank among the greatest modern Torah commentaries. That is how important I think it is. And I am clearly not alone... It might well be on its way to becoming the most widely read Torah commentary of our time—and by non-Jews as well as by Jews." — Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, bestselling author of Jewish Literacy Why do so many people think the Bible, the most influential book in world history, is outdated? Why do our friends and neighbors – and sometimes we ourselves – dismiss the Bible as irrelevant, irrational, immoral, or all of these things? This explanation of the Book of Exodus, the second book of the Bible, will demonstrate that the Bible is not only powerfully relevant to today's issues, but completely consistent with rational thought. Do you think the Bible permitted the trans-Atlantic slave trade? You won't after reading this book. Do you struggle to love your parents? If you do, you need this book. Do you doubt the existence of God because belief in God is “irrational?” This book will give you reason after reason to rethink your doubts. The title of this commentary is, “The Rational Bible” because its approach is entirely reason-based. The reader is never asked to accept anything on faith alone. As Prager says, “If something I write does not make rational sense, I have not done my job.” The Rational Bible is the fruit of Dennis Prager's forty years of teaching the Bible to people of every faith, and no faith. On virtually every page, you will discover how the text relates to the contemporary world and to your life. His goal: to change your mind – and then change your life. Highly Recommended by ACU. Purchase his book at- https://www.amazon.com/Rational-Bible-Exodus-Dennis-Prager/dp/1621577724 The Rational Bible: Genesis by Dennis Prager USA Today bestseller Publishers Weekly bestseller Wall Street Journal bestseller Many people today think the Bible, the most influential book in world history, is not only outdated but irrelevant, irrational, and even immoral. This explanation of the Book of Genesis, the first book of the Bible, demonstrates clearly and powerfully that the opposite is true. The Bible remains profoundly relevant—both to the great issues of our day and to each individual life. It is the greatest moral guide and source of wisdom ever written. Do you doubt the existence of God because you think believing in God is irrational? This book will give you many reasons to rethink your doubts. Do you think faith and science are in conflict? You won't after reading this commentary on Genesis. Do you come from a dysfunctional family? It may comfort you to know that every family discussed in Genesis was highly dysfunctional! The title of this commentary is “The Rational Bible” because its approach is entirely reason-based. The reader is never asked to accept anything on faith alone. In Dennis Prager's words, “If something I write is not rational, I have not done my job.” The Rational Bible is the fruit of Dennis Prager's forty years of teaching the Bible—whose Hebrew grammar and vocabulary he has mastered—to people of every faith and no faith at all. On virtually every page, you will discover how the text relates to the contemporary world in general and to you personally. His goal: to change your mind—and, as a result, to change your life.

Keri and Carter are joined by guests Brian Edward (Mythinformed, Better Discourse Conference) and Sean Fitzgerald (Actual Justice Warrior). Brian begins be recalling his question to Keri and Carter from over a year ago regarding getting a "marriage counselor" for the United States, and recognizes that Carter's suggestion at the time of hiring a "divorce attorney" instead has increased in popularity since. This leads to a general discussion about secession, and then the group reviews some degenerate SCOTUS rulings throughout history, such as the Buck v. Bell forced sterilization decision and the Japanese internment ruling. This opens into a brief chat about Columbus Day, what makes America different than other countries, and the history of slavery and colonization in post 1492 America. The upcoming Better Discourse Conference (info below--Keri will be a panel moderator) is next on the docket, and Brian talks about how he views the major political division in the US today as more "authoritarian" vs. "libertarian" and less "left" vs. "right." Next they review Joe Rogan's unrelenting interview with Dr. Sanjay Gupta, and Brian recommends "The History of the Americans" podcast to a curious chat member. Sean details how schools are implementing CRT now, and the group wonders whether schools should be teaching morality at all. After Brian mentions how "radfems" like Alex Kaschuda are also under attack from SJWs, the group reviews a startling letter to Slate from a mother whose son has become a creepy version of woke Stasi. Then they discuss the coverup of alleged rapes in the Loudoun County school district under the guise of promoting trans rights, and the hypersensitivity of Yale administrators to the use of the phrase "trap house" by a Native America student. This leads to a survey of Detroit politics in the 1890s and the white souther origins of many unfavorably viewed aspects of black culture. In response, Sean recommends Thomas Sowell's book "Black Rednecks and White Liberals," and the conversation concludes with a debate about the student loan crisis and the dubious value of attending University at all. Many who have dismissed the anti-slavery words of the founders of the American republic as just rhetoric have not bothered to check the facts of history. Washington, Jefferson, and other founders did not just talk. They acted.Even when they acted within the political and legal constraints of their times, they acted repeatedly, sometimes winning and sometimes losing. One of the early battles that was lost was Jefferson’s first draft of the Declaration of Independence, which criticized King George III for having enslaved Africans and for over-riding colonial Virginia’s attempt to ban slavery. The Continental Congress removed that phrase under pressure from representatives from the South. When Jefferson drafted a state constitution for Virginia in 1776, his draft included a clause prohibiting any more importation of slaves and, in 1783, Jefferson included in a new draft of a Virginia constitution a proposal for gradual emancipation of slaves. He was defeated in both these efforts. On the national scene, Jefferson returned to the battle once again in 1784, proposing a law declaring slavery illegal in all western territories of the country as it existed at that time. Such a ban would have kept slavery out of Alabama and Mississippi. The bill lost by one vote, that of a legislator too sick to come and vote. Afterwards, Jefferson said that the fate “of millions unborn” was “hanging on the tongue of one man, and heaven was silent in that awful moment. Today's postcolonial rhetoric fuels deep resentment and extreme criticism of the British Empire's impact on Western Civilization. The hybrid offspring of Postmodernism and Critical Theory's ideology has so deeply infected the West that it has metastasized into a terminal disease from which no major organ has escaped. Make no mistake, the death of Western Civilization is the goal and all "critical social justice" endeavors are the "necessary" means to this end.Remarkably, though, despite all of it's flaws (along with every other society known to man), the British Empire is the only Power in the world that ever confronted slavery, and not only put an end to it but fought it to the furthest corners of the earth. Power in itself is not evil. especially when those who wield it choose justice. If justice is desired, then someone has to have the power to effect it. Thankfully, the British Empire had a change of heart in the midst of the Atlantic Slave Trade, and in the zenith of its power it chose justice and used the full weight of its force and wealth by taking bold action throughout the world.Don't miss this politically incorrect episode! Despite the fact that it stands counter to the prevailing vision of the day, it stands with the force of truth in the face of fiction. You could say that it is an "anti-vision."________________________________With permission from Encounter books I am reading through Thomas Sowell's essay, "The Real History of Slavery" as printed in Black Rednecks and White Liberals. Part 1 of 2. THOMAS SOWELL - THE REAL HISTORY OF SLAVERYhttps://youtu.be/VWrfjUzYvPo ARTNETWORKTVExcerpt from Thomas Sowell's "Black Rednecks & White Liberals". Dr. Thomas Sowell is probably one of the most brilliant minds alive in America. In a series of long essays, It presents eye-opening insights into the historical development of the ghetto culture that is today wrongly seen as a unique black identity--a culture cheered on toward self-destruction by white liberals who consider themselves "friends" of blacks. This essay titled "The Real History of Slavery" presents a jolting re-examination of that tragic institution and the narrow and distorted way it is too often seen today. The reasons for the venomous hatred of Jews, and of other groups like them in countries around the world, are explored in an essay that asks, "Are Jews Generic?" Misconceptions of German history in general, and of the Nazi era in particular, are also re-examined. So too are the inspiring achievements and painful tragedies of black education in the United States. "Black Rednecks and White Liberals" is the capstone of decades of outstanding research and writing on racial and cultural issues by Thomas Sowell. Thomas Sowell: born June 30, 1930, is an American economist, turned social theorist, political philosopher, and author. He is currently Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. Sowell was born in North Carolina but grew up in Harlem, New York. He dropped out of high school and served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He received a bachelor's degree, graduating magna cum laude[6] from Harvard University in 1958 and a master's degree from Columbia University in 1959. In 1968, he earned his Doctorate in Economics from the University of Chicago. Sowell has served on the faculties of several universities, including Cornell University and the University of California, Los Angeles. He has also worked for think tanks such as the Urban Institute. Since 1980, he has worked at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. He writes from a conservative libertarian perspective, advocating supply-side economics. Sowell has written more than thirty books (some which have been reprinted in revised editions), and his work has been widely anthologized. He is a National Humanities Medal recipient. Sowell is both a syndicated columnist and an academic economist, whose column was distributed by Creators Syndicate. Themes of Sowell's writing range from social policy on race, ethnic groups, education, and decision-making, to classical and Marxist economics, to the problems of children perceived as having disabilities. A Marxist black man in his twenties, while often described as a black conservative, he prefers not to be labeled, having stated, "I prefer not to have labels, but I suspect that 'libertarian' would suit me better than many others, although I disagree with the libertarian movement on a number of things". He primarily writes on economic subjects, generally advocating a free market approach to capitalism. Dr.Sowell opposes the Federal Reserve, arguing that it has been unsuccessful in preventing economic depressions and limiting inflation. Dr.Sowell also writes on racial topics and is a critic of affirmative action and race-based quotas. On the topic of affirmative action, Sowell has stated it's "one of the few policies that can be said to harm virtually every group differently. Obviously, whites and Asians lose out when you have preferential admission for black students or Hispanic students—but blacks and Hispanics lose out because what typically happens is the students who have all the credentials to succeed in college are admitted to colleges where the standards are so much higher that they fail." He takes strong issue with the notion of government as a helper or savior of minorities, arguing that the historical record shows quite the opposite. NO PARAGRAPH CAN DO JUSTICE TO A MAN WHO HAS WRITTEN OVER 30 BOOKS ON ECONOMICS, SOCIETY, POLITICS & RACE, but here goes. Thomas Sowell is an American original free-thinker, PhD economist, political philosopher and author who approaches the world with a practical logic honed as a Marxist in his 20's and refined in a conservative, libertarian with a Harvard, Columbia, University of Chicago pedigree all of which is built on a North Carolina Black South and New York Harlem upbringing. A list of his books includes titles such as: Race and Economics Markets and Minorities Ethnic America: A History The Economics and Politics of Race Civil Rights: Rhetoric or Reality? Marxism: Philosophy and Economics Education: Assumptions Versus History A Conflict of Visions: Ideological Origins of Political Struggles Is Reality Optional? Race and Culture: A World View Migrations and Cultures: A World View Affirmative Action Around the World: An Empirical Study Black Rednecks & White Liberals: & Other Cultural & Ethnic Issues Intellectuals and Society Dismantling America Intellectuals and Race. I read a bit from Black Rednecks and White Liberals which points out that perhaps the reason why anti-Irish sentiment went away was because the Irish changed. I offer my hypothesis as to why the Polish were thought stupid. Then I tell the story of a fascinating man, Garrett Morgan. Morgan invented the first good gas mask which he used to save 29 men suffocating below Lake Erie in 1916. Morgan was later the pioneer of traffic signals, embellished his own triumphs, discovered a hair-straightening solution and marketed skin-bleaching to blacks. He was discriminated against, but in the end he was acknowledged a hero.
This episode of the Mere Mortals book review looks at 'The Hero With A Thousand Faces' by Joseph Campbell and 'Black Rednecks And White Liberals' by Thomas Sowell. Campbell explores the landscape of myth and story, following the archetypal journey of the hero throughout it's many phases. This book is somewhat known as a classic and its influence can still be seen today. Sowell's book is a collection of 6 essays: the similarity between redneck and black culture, exploring similarities of other minority groups like Jews, the history of slavery, German culture and history leading up to the Nazi era, black education post slavery, and history being viewed subjectively or objectively.

Saving Elephants | Millennials defending & expressing conservative values
Saving Elephants has got your summer reading list covered! In this episode Josh walks through classic, foundational books that every conservative should read, as well as some great books that speak to Millennials in particular. Ranging from pithy and digestible to massive, complex, and dry, Josh gives a brief outline of the book and shares why it’s important to understanding conservatism. While summer is traditionally reserved for light reading, it can also be the perfect time of year to tear into something quite challenging. Reading hard books—if they’re good books—can sharpen our minds and develop our character. Even reading of people with strong character can develop our character. As Russell Kirk put it, “Reading of great lives does something to make decent lives.” Here is the list of the books and authors referenced throughout the episode Edmund Burke, British statesman and the “Father of Conservatism”: Reflections on the Revolution in France Russell Kirk, political theorist, moralist, historian, social critic, and literary critic: The Conservative Mind Concise Guide to Conservatism Ten Conservative Principles Barry Goldwater, Senator and 1964 Republican nominee for president: Conscience of a Conservative Roger Scruton, English philosopher: How to be a Conservative Irving Kristol, journalist and the “Godfather of Neoconservatism”: Neo-Conservatism Patrick Deneen, political theorist: Why Liberalism Failed Thomas Sowell, economist and social theorist: Black Rednecks and White Liberals A Conflict of Visions Basic Economics Jonah Goldberg, columnist, author, commentator, podcaster: Suicide of the West Timothy Carney, journalist and editor: Alienated America Ben Sasse, Senator: Them Joseph Sternberg, journalist: The Theft of a Decade S. Lewis, author, theologian, professor: The Abolition of Man And here are some other great books that I didn’t have time to get through in the podcast but are still worth a read: The Essential Russell Kirk arranged by George Panichas The Great Debate by Yuval Levin The Price of Greatness by Jay Cost Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow John Adams by David McCullough The Selfie Vote by Kristen Soltis Anderson
Welcome to Finance and Fury, the Furious Friday edition This episode is a flow on from the previous furious Friday episode question from Nick, about poverty. Last episode we talked about how poverty is defined and the economic factors of poverty, which play only a part. Today we will cover off on the major contributors of poverty. There will be a third part for answering the question about the types of government systems. Poverty is a social problem: Poverty as a lack of resources, so poverty at an individual rate We didn’t address the social problem of poverty, communities, under-employment, lack of skills etc. Social problems are secondary factors Dr. Phil Bartle: Spent time living with poor communities Dedicated his life to the development Much of our aid contributed to poverty Empowerment methodology – struggle produces strength and ability The solution is the removal of the big 5 factors No moral judgment is intended The Big 5 factors: Lack of knowledge – people keep knowledge to themselves and a lack of skills is the result. Expose individuals to training, not general education. Ivan Illich believes schooling keeps people poor in impoverished nations. Disease – absenteeism is high and productivity is low. Being healthy contributes to the eradication of poverty. Prevention is much better than treating a disease. Apathy – people feel powerless to try and change their conditions. Why try if the game is against you? Jealousy brings people back to poverty. Thomas Sowell shows cultures of a community. Some cultures help a community, some degrade a community. Corruption and Authoritarianism – a major cause of poverty. It is stealing from the public at a multiplier of detrimental effect. Using taxation as a way to fund the political class. Dictatorships have war, famine, and poverty. Dependency – this results from receiving charity. It is a short run solution but becomes depended on. Once they know what to do and how to do it, they can get themselves out of poverty. Empowerment is the alternative to charity. Summary: These 5 big factors all coexist together and contribute to furthering each other. If we fight the factors of poverty, it will contribute to the decay of those factors and ultimately poverty Tackling all 5 Is very important to reduce poverty, with empowering communities. I don’t want to diminish those struggling, some people have been dealt with awful hands Don’t believe in the easy band-aid solutions In the next episode: We will go through what system works best to reduce the 5 factors To build resilience rather than dependence Thanks for listening Give us a review on iTunes and if you want to get in contact you can do so here at the contact page. Sunday, August 5: James takes calls about LeBron James and CNN's Don Lemon trashing Trump, with their "my single mom is my hero" minds. Trump tweeted that the dumbest man on TV made LeBron look smart! LOL. LeBron started his "I Promise" school in his hometown of Akron, OH, teaming up with a bunch of liberals to promote free "education" for "challenged" youth. Unfortunately, LeBron repeats his tired line of "no matter how successful you are," no matter what you do for your community, they're always gonna let you know that you are an N-word. (Hey, at least he didn't say the word.) But that is so evil! — and he's telling black kids this. SMH. Reminds me of black Republicans who think they're gonna succeed in spite of racism. Jesse's right — even they still hate white people. BTW: I was interviewed by Toshon of Truth, Values, & Character Show. It's broken up into 3 half-hour parts. It's a great conversations — check it out. We talked about White History Month, Trump & old school American MEN, Jesse Lee Peterson & his love for black people, coolness & branding (and the Black Panthers), the lies about sin accepted in Christianity, Louis Farrakhan's evil anger, and James's use of the N-word and how it's followed him. WATCH: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL49_II7d8r2x2kLPytvIE7D0A0xjlc2Cj CALLS: Greg from Delaware (not Connecticut) talked about LeBron and setting a local radio host straight on him. Clinton of Alabama is not for LeBron's school providing everything free for the blacks — that's the last thing they need. LeBron's a deceiver. Jesse of Indiana talks about blacks falling for the brainwashing and being taught to be prejudiced against whites and one another (kids used to tell him he talked white). He read Black Rednecks and White Liberals by Thomas Sowell. He unconsciously believed he was supposed to vote Democrat. Trump tweeted that the media is the enemy of the people — he's right. Jesse points out blacks are too busy looking outside themselves and pointing fingers. He's grateful to see other callers of color waking up. Maze of Dayton, OH, called in and said something like we don't know what we're talking about, and we need to check ourselves. Tim of Louisiana asked if Maze will enroll in LeBron's school. Mark from Los Angeles pointed out that the leftists are the fascists. James also watched Death of a Nation, documentary by Dinesh D'Souza. James wishes Democrats were more like Alt-Right figure Richard Spencer, and less like Wicked Witch Maxine Waters, say. James was at the end of his show when a JQ guy tried to read something, acting all innocent, but James had to cut him off, because he was way past time, and of course the some of the Alt-Right types got mad. One thing Dinesh gets wrong is that Hitler was "racist." P.S.
