In 1912 Titanic departed on her first and last voyage from Southampton, sinking over 2 miles to the bottom of the dark North Atlantic Ocean, around 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland. It has captured the imaginations of adults and children alike for over a century since the wreck was discovered- broken in two, but largely intact by explorer Bob Ballard in 1985. Since then, people from all over the world have been desperate to see the slowly degrading wreck on the ocean floor, some paying in the hundreds of thousands to make the trip down.Currently, the world watches as organisations and countries work together to try and locate a submersible carrying tourists that disappeared in the early hours of an expedition on Sunday. Titanic expert Tim Maltin joins Dan to talk about Titanic tourism, what the perilous journey down to it is like, the state of the wreck and its role as a gravesite for those who perished in the sinking. He also describes the astonishing things Bob Ballard saw when he laid eyes on the wreck for the first time - the swinging chandeliers and the telephone set from which the final distress calls were made compared with what people might see today.Produced by Mariana Des Forges and edited by Dougal Patmore.Discover the past on History Hit with ad-free original podcasts and documentaries released weekly presented by world-renowned historians like Dan Snow, Suzannah Lipscomb, Lucy Worsely, Matt Lewis, Tristan Hughes and more.Get 50% off your first 3 months with code DANSNOW. Here's our second episode of The Deco-Stop; a deeper look into the humans behind deep-sea science and technology. We've done our science dive, and now it's time to decompress, and discuss tales at sea, career paths and the social & political aspects of deep-sea science.    From Steven Hawking to Charles Darwin, neurodiversity and science have been intertwined throughout history. Neurodiversity is a term which refers to the variety in the cognition of the human brain and can include people who are on the autism spectrum, or who have been diagnosed with dyslexia, dyspraxia, and dyscalculia, among others. We wanted to talk on a very human level about the strengths and weaknesses of being neurodivergent in science and to also share with you some personal stories and assistive resources. Thom shares his own journey in the field, alongside many other pioneering colleagues. Living legend, Bob Ballard speaks with us about his perspective on being dyslexic and even attributes his career success (including the discovery of the titanic) to his gift. Friends of the show, Tom Tangye, Sophie McLellan and Cat Morgan also share their experiences of working in the field alongside being neurodivergent. They share how the industry, and the world in general, is changing to be more inclusive and understanding of everyone who thinks differently. We had such a great time making this episode, and we're so grateful to everyone who spoke with us. Below you'll find a whole host of resources that have been shared with us, and that we recommend ourselves! Let's carry on this conversation, with colleagues, friends, and with those outside our inner circles. Be patient with each other, and trust that the world is changing, for the better.   We are so excited about creating this space to talk more about the human aspects of deep-sea science, and would love to hear from you about your deep-sea journey!   Check out our podcast merch here! Sean is joined by Alexia from Titanic Talkline to review the Titanic documentary Ghosts of the Abyss (2003), which documents James Cameron's 2001 expedition. This was his first journey back to the Titanic wreck since 1995, when he shot footage for his Titanic (1997) motion picture. This episode is accessible for both those who are familiar with Titanic history and those who may know less about the shipwreck, as both Alexia and Sean do their upmost to explain the documentary as fully as they can. Sean scuppers the discussion partway through with a very distracting mug. Discussion Points: -Beloved and lost treasure Bill Paxton. -The main players in the documentary and how it was very much a family affair. -The unseen troubles which befell the expedition, which is not shown in the documentary film but is documented in the book. -How dangerous it is just to live on the boat. -Visual Navigational Aids-what they are and how they are critical to explore the wreck safely. -Sean's theory as to why memorial plaques are left on the stern rather than the bow. -Alexia's surprisingly good English accent. Random Questions: -How many times does Sean tell everyone he's read the book? -Do a lot of Titanic documentaries skip how difficult and dangerous it is to dive to the wreck? -Whilst on-board the Keldysh, what did Bill Paxton get told off by a Russian crewmember for? -Does the resolution of older images of the Titanic wreck compared with the most recent 8k footage (during the Ocean Gate in 2022) of Titanic make the deterioration of the wreck look worse? -Did you know Titanic movie parody merchandise exists? (Sean didn't). Random Quotes: -"If you haven't already tuned out". -"Unless you get a really benevolent squid, you're screwed"-"Good segway, there's a biologist on board". -"The front of the ship, the bow, is really romanticised, obviously the film helps...it looks kind of like normal...but then you look at the stern of the ship and it's like a death you've never experienced". -"Diving to the ship takes more from you than it will ever give". Correction: The lifeboat lowering is from the documentary Titanic: 20 Years Later with James Cameron. Disclaimer-It is disputed as to what happened to Bob Ballard's 1986 expedition plaque, some claim it was stolen, whilst others think it slipped from it's original position and was covered by sediment. Alexia will return to take part in the Defend It Yourself series, to defend Showgirls. Thanks for listening!

IN THIS EPISODE OF THE HUMAN UPGRADE™... …two of the most adventurous people on the planet share what they've uncovered, faced and learned through exploration of the planet's deepest waters. From discovering the Titanic to cave diving in places untouched by any other human, Bob Ballard and Jill Heinerth took risks, dove into fear, and came up for air with tremendous new knowledge. Combined, they've spent over nine decades searching the seas and documenting their findings. Canadian Jill Heinerth explores the underwater world as one of the greatest cave divers on the planet. She's considered this generation's Jacques Cousteau. She's completed more than 7,500 dives in her career so far and dived deeper into caves than any woman in history. She became the first person to dive the ice caves of Antarctica, going further into an underwater cave system than any woman ever. She's gone into places in the world where no one had gone before.Learn more about Jill's lifetime of underwater cave diving in her memoir, “Into the Planet: My Life as a Cave Diver.” “We are capable of so much more than we could possibly imagine," she says.Considered a legend in the diving community, she's spent more than 30 years in submerged caves around the world partnering with National Geographic, NOAA, and various educational institutions and television networks worldwide. She's also a writer and award-winning photographer and filmmaker who takes a keen interest in the health of the Earth's oceans. She's made TV series, consulted on movies, given TEDtalks and continues to educate kids and adults alike on underwater wonders.Bob Ballard explores the vast depths of the oceans uncovering mysteries, proving theories, and revealing artifacts that tell a story about the history of humankind. An oceanographer and marine geologist, he's led nearly 160 deep-sea expeditions and worked with the Navy on top-secret missions. His underwater career spanning more than 60 years began simply enough as a child with a love of California's Mission Bay tide pools. He's gone on to discover ships thought long lost (the RMS Titanic in 1985) and provide extraordinary new understandings and discoveries in marine geology, geophysics, biology, and chemistry. Ever since Amelia Earhart made her last radio transmission somewhere over the Pacific, theories about her disappearance have proliferated; more than 80 years later, the constant retelling of her story shows no signs of slowing. Although the search to find a “smoking gun” has yielded little evidence, there are many who believe they know how Amelia's story ended. Whether they're right or wrong, one thing remains true: Their stories have little to do with Amelia herself. For more information on this episode, visit nationalgeographic.com/overheard. Want more? Learn how MIT engineer, Marty Klein developed the now widely used side-scan sonar to find shipwrecks. First developed for the military during WW II – it uses sound to detect ships and other lost objects in the ocean depths. While searching for the elusive monster Nessie in Scotland's Loch Ness, he went on to find the USS Thresher – the Wellington bomber that plunged into the loch on a training mission. Besides its military applications, side scan sonar was also deployed after the Titanic tragedy to locate icebergs. We hear how Marty has worked with many of the leading ocean explorers, including MIT engineer, Doc Edgerton and ocean explorer Bob Ballard, who went on to discover the Titanic. #titanic #lochnessmonster #maritimearchaeology #sidescansonar #martyklein #bobballard #mit #WWII

In this month's episode, we discuss ocean mapping, exploration, and characterization. We were perfectly prepared for this topic 2 weeks ago when we were thrilled to host none other than Dr. Robert Ballard, world famous ocean explorer and discoverer of the RMS Titanic. We had an engaging discussion about his recent book Into the Deep, A Memoir by the Man who found Titanic. Today, we will explore the remarkable field of ocean discovery that Bob Ballard helped to advance, and to a greater extent, popularize for current and future generations. Ocean Mapping, Exploration and Characterization has big blue economy implications. Mapping, for example, is critical for fisheries management, offshore energy development, and safe marine transportation. Exploration and characterization support identification of sources for critical minerals, energy, and regions requiring conservation. Mapping and exploration are also helping us identify our Extended Continental Shelf, an area of nearly 1 million square miles which we hope to add to our EEZ. As with our past episodes, we have a rock star lineup of guests, including: Senator Roger Wicker of Mississippi and Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. Dr Alan Leonardi, President and CEO, COL, Former Director, NOAA OER, the National Program for OE. Dr. Leslie Sautter, Professor of Geology at College of Charleston, Director of the Benthic Acoustic Mapping and Survey (BEAMS) Team. Cassie Bongiovani, ARL, University of Texas, Former lead mapper of the Five Deeps Expedition. Allison Fundis, COO, Ocean Exploration Trust. In this special episode of the American Blue Economy Podcast, our host Rear Admiral (ret) Tim Gallaudet interviews renowned ocean explorer Dr. Robert Ballard about his book Into the Deep: A Memoir from the Man Who Found Titanic. Ocean mapping and exploration contribute to every component of the American Blue Economy, and we learn about many of Ballard's innovative advances in the field. Longtime colleagues, Gallaudet and BalIard discuss their common connections and experience in ocean science, technology, and adventure. From the extreme depths of the deep sea to the Halls of Congress, we discover that Ballard did much more than discovering famous shipwrecks and never-before seen scientific findings. He helped establish NOAA's Office for Ocean Exploration and Research, and he influenced the acquisition of the agency's first dedicated exploration ship Okeanos Explorer. We learn that Gallaudet pursued a career in Naval Oceanography after seeing Ballard give a presentation on the Titanic at the US Naval Academy, and coming full circle 3 decades later with NOAA, he led development of the National Ocean Exploration Strategy and Plan based on Ballard's vision. The most compelling piece is learning about the person that is this great discoverer - the son, brother, father, husband, friend, and human being. Come dive into one of the most epic episodes this year!

He's a modern-day Captain Nemo - the person responsible for much of what we've learned about the Earth's oceans over the past sixty years. He's best-known as the person who discovered the Titanic and other historic shipwrecks. But his contributions to science and his dedication to exploration are what he's proudest of. In the 1970's Bob Ballard was one of the first people to explore the bottom of the sea in a submersible, and he was the first to begin mapping its geography. He later helped discover the existence of hydro-thermal vents, holes in the ocean floor where the water circulates through the planet's interior. Over the decades he has pioneered new and better ways for oceanographers to explore and document - in manned vehicles and robotic ones. At 79, he continues to innovate and to educate new generations of ocean scientists. On this episode we'll also hear from one of his proteges, Allison Fundis, who is making her own significant contributions to our understanding of the oceans that sustain us.

Exploration Vessel (EV) Nautilus, led by ocean explorer Dr. Robert Ballard, is equipped with some of the latest technological systems, helping to advance the frontiers of ocean exploration. This beautiful vessel supports science class remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), high-resolution seafloor mapping, and real-time satellite communication systems to facilitate live streaming telepresence-enabled outreach and scientific collaboration to all who which to follow along and participate. We’ll take an interesting and fun tour of Nautilus with friend Samantha Wishnak, Science Communication Fellow at Nautilus Live and Digital Media Coordinator at the Ocean Exploration Trust with a cameo by Dr. Bob Ballard. Links to 360° views of the ship can be found below.Nautilus is currently heading out to study the cultural heritage and natural wildlife in the Greater Farallons National Marine Sanctuary (GFNMS). Recently expanded to protect 3,295 square miles, GFNMS contains over 400 shipwrecks and is largely unexplored in the deepest portions. Nautilus will survey the USS Independence, a World War II era naval ship and former aircraft carrier, once used in the atomic tests at Bikini Atoll in the Pacific. Independence was scuttled offshore of San Francisco in 1951, rediscovered as the deepest shipwreck in GFNMS, and acoustically mapped by NOAA in 2015 using autonomous underwater vehicles. NOAA Director of Maritime Heritage, James Delgado, who was part of the team that located the Independence in 2015, is onboard Nautilus to conduct the first visual survey of the ship since her sinking. Two other shipwrecks, the Ituna, which was an historic steam yacht from 1886, and the freighter Dorothy Windermote will also be explored. In addition to documenting and mapping these wrecks, the shipwrecks’ roles as artificial marine habitat for fish and invertebrates will be assessed. http://explorers.institute/podcast/Ocean_Exploration_Vessel_Nautilus_Tour.mp3Subscribe, follow, and like the Nautilus here: http://www.nautiluslive.orgMore about Dr. Robert Ballard here: http://www.nautiluslive.org/people/robert-ballardMore about Samantha Wishnak here: http://www.nautiluslive.org/people/samantha-wishnakWatch our chat with James Delgado here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i93c6Lpt5fsMore about Dr. James Delgado here: http://sanctuaries.noaa.gov/maritime/contact_us.htmlMore about Samantha Wishnak here: http://www.nautiluslive.org/people/samantha-wishnak360° views of the EV Nautilus: Hercules and Argus ROVs: https://theta360.com/s/b26ZoetEsqkzoJB2AvHeWp3nkHercules ROV in the hanger: https://theta360.com/s/frKzR6OMNIbccz06zJIwL8RtoThe shop: https://theta360.com/s/mjneWF381BRyUGyWSzLItR1n6The lab: https://theta360.com/s/qq1RSuqlzB0629SgNc0z2Q8MSMedia production: https://theta360.com/s/2wEMxvQpmMx8LoYglFeWaVPWK Mission Control: https://theta360.com/s/eiteahTc44UtSCJfoQhbDXeACThe ship's mess: https://theta360.com/s/hgWOU2yv3ttOJ0nho7p6kHmYi Communications: https://theta360.com/s/nkuejsMnsNCDWbbpJtQB2IxLEThe Bridge: https://theta360.com/s/3bXBDJX0naXbuBhAp8M8FB15kTopside: https://theta360.com/s/ckgchVUCIvNghgrF9gYx89KK0The bow: https://theta360.com/s/fMi14N1HFNYQw5HwywMj68I40

Nine ROV dives into the Galapágos Rift 2011 Expedition, the science team finally discovered the type of hydrothermal vent community they had been searching for. Clusters of tube worms, limpets, mussels, and anemones were seen to inhabit cracks in the lava bed where mineral-rich, geothermally-heated water 'vents' out. Two species of tube worms were found in abundance: the giant Riftia pachyptila and also the much smaller, never before observed in the Galápagos, Tevnia jerichonana. Brachyuran crabs, vent shrimp, and scale worms clung not only to the surrounding rock but also to the tube worms themselves in some cases. Extensive fields of dead and living clams surrounded the individual pockets of venting. Video courtesy of NOAA Okeanos Explorer Program, Galapágos Rift Expedition 2011.

Breathtaking... Nearly 20 years after first finding the sunken remains of the R.M.S. Titanic, marine explorer Robert Ballard returned in June 2004 helped by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Office of Ocean Exploration to study the ship's rapid deterioration. The team worked aboard the NOAA Ship Ronald H. Brown from May 30 through June 9 spending 11 days at the wreck site, mapping the ship and conducting scientific analysis of its deterioration. Using the Institute for Exploration (IFE) remotely operated vehicles (ROV's) Hercules and Argus, to conduct a sophisticated documentation of the state of Titanic was not possible in the 1980's. This "Look, don't touch" mission utilized high-definition video and stereoscopic still images to provide an updated assessment of the wreck site at an enormous depth of 3,840 meters (12,600 feet). As the nation's ocean agency, NOAA has a vested interest in the scientific and cultural aspects of the Titanic, and in its appropriate treatment and preservation. NOAA's focus is to build a baseline of scientific information from which we can measure the shipwreck's processes and deterioration, and then apply the knowledge we gain to other deep-water shipwrecks and submerged cultural resources. Mendocino Ridge 4,600ft gas plume discovery off the California coast. Okeanos Explorer, "America's Ship for Ocean Exploration", is equipped with the latest in technology systems, including multibeam sonar. This technology involves sending beams of sonar to the ocean floor and measuring the amount of time it takes for those beams to bounce back to the ship. In doing so, the sonar creates a 3-D "sound picture", or map, of the seafloor. While the ship was testing its sonar off the coast of California, the sound waves bounced off gas in the water column, creating a remarkable image of a gas plume that rose 4,600 feet from the seafloor. A landslide area at the base of the plume has led some scientists to believe that the plume might be methane, released by the landslide from methane hydrates. Okeanos Explorer is preparing to explore the waters north of Indonesia in the summer of 2010, in collaboration with Indonesia. The ship will continue to explore the western Pacific in 2011.
