Jon Bell's unsettling 2021 short film, The Moogai, receives the feature film treatment with his 2024 horror of the same name. Making its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, The Moogai follows in the steps of other Australian horror films (Talk to Me, Relic, You Won't Be Alone) to have left their mark at the fest.It follows the story of Indigenous couple Sarah (Shari Sebbens) and Fergus (Meyne Wyatt) as they welcome their new child into the world. However, Sarah's birth is a traumatic one, with her dying on the table, leading her to be revived in a horrifying manner. Back at home and still rattled from her birthing experience, Sarah endures another torturous event in the guise of a malevolent spirit that wants to take her baby: the moogai.Jon Bell explores the traumatic history of the Stolen Generation in The Moogai, layering in Aboriginal myths and legends, alongside the complexity that comes with Aboriginal kids being raised by white parents, as we see with the character of Sarah. Her culture has been pushed out of her, replaced with a level of sceptisism and distrust towards her Aboriginal heritage. When her birth mother Ruth (a powerful and riveting performance from Tessa Rose) tries to help ward off the spirit with ochre and snake skins, Sarah outwardly rejects her, allowing the spirit to further take hold of her life. The Moogai is frequently tense and unnerving, which is thanks in part to the work of cinematographer Sean Ryan. Sean worked with Jon on the short film, and in doing so, the two have crafted a visual style that amplifies the haunting aspects of the Australian landscape. In the following interview with Sean, recorded while he attends the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, Sean talks about creating that tension on screen, about how he chose to present the Australian landscape, and while skirting spoilers, talking about how he shot the fiery climax of the film which sees characters surrounded by a circle of flames as smoke encompasses them in the darkness of the night. It is a memorable finale. While The Moogai does not have a release date as of yet, it will not doubt reach Australian audiences sometime during 2024.Read the interview with Jon Bell here.We will be bringing you more coverage from the Sundance Film Festival over the end of January. We conclude our mini-series on folk horror (#whatthefolk) with a discussion of the meditative, horrific, and strangely beautiful film from last year: YOU WON'T BE ALONE. Constructed as a sequence of loosely connected vignettes (ones which involve both different characters and yet, the same character), it tells the story of a young girl who is turned into a witch at a young age and proceeds through the world with the ability to transform herself. What emerges is a deeply haunting and equally moving portrait of a "brutal and biting world", but one which may yet be navigated with grace and beauty and hope. We're joined by friend of the show and Quarterly King, Ian Olson for a heartfelt and thoughtful conversation about what it means to be in this often savage and strange world. We hope it encourages and challenges you and we hope you enjoy it.3:08 - Business TimePatron Only Segment: Whatcha Watchin' / Readin' / Listenin' To?4:30 - Ian Olson's The Book of Common Terror15:16 - YOU WON'T BE ALONESee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
This week, we look back at 2022 (now that we have some space) to discuss our favorite horror films of the year. We finished last week's Barbarian podcast and realized we had left a lot of great 2022 titles on the cutting room floor. Rather than wait for each to get their own episode, we instead counted down our Top 10 horror films of the year, as well as some of our favorite performances. Quick note, we are sorry Alan/AJ's audio was not of the highest quality. The recording failed, and we had to use our backup. Nice reminder, always backup record! Goran Stolevski is our latest guest, and the award-winning Macedonian-born and Australian-raised writer/director's latest masterpiece, Of an Age, is all I've been talking about since I watched it.Of an Age is a beautiful and moving film about an unexpected and intense twenty-four-hour romance between an eighteen-year-old Serbian ballroom dancer and his best friend's older brother. A decade later the pair meet for a bittersweet reunion.Directed with an abundance of love and care by Stolevski, this film was incredibly tender and honest, and the cinematography was as stunning as its performances. What a beautiful story!Stolevski came to prominence with short films including Would You Look at Her, winner of the Best International Short at Sundance 2018. Collectively his shorts played over 200 festivals worldwide including Clermont-Ferrand, Palm Springs, Melbourne and Raindance. He also directed three episodes of the fourth season of International-Emmy-winning series Nowhere Boys.Goran's feature debut You Won't Be Alone is steeped in Macedonian folklore with a genre twist. Produced by Kristina Ceyton and Samantha Jennings at Causeway Films, with Focus Features handling worldwide distribution, You Won't be Alone premiered in competition for the Grand Jury prize at 2022 Sundance Film Festival, receiving rave reviews from critics. The film stars Noomi Rapace, Carloto Cotta, Anamaria Marinca and Alice Englert.Of an Age:Written and Directed and Edited by: Goran StolevskiProduced by: Kristina Ceyton and Sam JenningsStarring: Elia Anton, Thom Green, Hattie HookOf an Age Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtfkhimcnLYOfficial Website for Of an Age: https://www.focusfeatures.com/of-an-age/THE SMITH SOCIETY is a podcast featuring storytellers. This week, Dimes and Judas discuss Lindsay Clancy's murder of her children and all the young moms defending her actions online, the unavoidable future of exponentially-degenerating AI porn cartels, and a review of the historical fish-out-of-water witch film "You Won't Be Alone." Then the boyz dive into the book "Seeing Like a State" by James C. Scott, an anarchist-friendly accounting of case studies pulled from a variety of cultures and eras detailing how state-orchestrated projects to centralize their power and organize society have frequently ended in catastrophe, and if they succeed, how they irrevocably change the people forever. Lastly on this edition of The Copepranos Society, Dimes sits down with old friend The Fascifist, a delightfully controversial figure in the Dissident Right who is waging a spiritual war against race-idolatry, Liberalism, and Atlanticism.
Closing out the month on a witchy note, we're unearthing one of 2022's hidden gems You Won't Be Alone. We are already 1/12th into 2023 and some good films have come out. However, let's reflect. Did last year start out with a bang or a whimper? Dark Discussions puts together their review of all that was good and bad in 2022. Included was the consideration of dozens of different films that were worthy enough to be considered as a top 10 movie for genre and horror films. Each of your co-hosts put together a list of movies they thought were good enough to be seen by audiences. This included both a list of horror films and a list of other speculative fiction films. Afterwards we then combined those lists and came up with Dark Discussions definitive lists of the best of 2022. Some obvious films like BARBARIAN and TERRIFIER 2 appear but also little known films like SPEAK NO EVIL, and YOU WON'T BE ALONE were considered. Also included are some of our "sometime co-hosts" choices and what they felt were the best of the year. And don't forget our top and worst scenes, scream queens, breakout star, and anything else you can think of. Dark Discussions wraps up last year in a nice tight bow and gives their listeners a good many films to go out and search for.

Colleen joins Caitlin for what might be the most Plug It Up movie that ever plugged it up: 2022's You Won't Be Alone. It's a slow burn folk horror movie that has a Plug It Up trifecta: a monstrous femme figure, monstrous menstruation (well, some coming-of-age, at least), and monstrous motherhood. It explores gender in really interesting ways, and it's a real accomplishment of a movie in terms of script, direction, scope, and acting. Tangents for this episode include: tattoos, dogs, roadtrip playlists, and fruit. Cantaloupe stan until I DIE.

Kylie and Elliott spend the weekend at their favourite place in the world - Metro Cinema - to watch the four films in this year's Not Your Final Girl series, curated by Nicole Boychuk. As always, they talk about how the movies make them think and feel, while searching for better cinematic dads. Along the way, they discuss why internal films impact them so deeply, how the raddest parents are the cycle breakers, and the magic of seeing red curtains opening and closing in the cinema. This week's movies are: You Won't Be Alone (2022), Trouble Every Day (2001), Bit (2019), Hatching (2022).Follow Not Your Final Girl on Instagram and Twitter. We are talking about the most killer scenes in films we all love with some of the most killer musicians from some of the most killer bands of all time. Josh Newton (of Shiner, Every Time I Die, and more) and Dan Sneddon (Kowloon Walled City, No Lights, and more) join Ross and Ian to talk about cinema's greatest on-screen kills. If you are a horror fan, a Savini fan, an action film junkie, or just a casual film watcher, you will love taking a deeper look at some of these kills. From the practical effects in John Carpenter's "The Thing", to the clever kills in "Friday the 13th", to the French extreme and beyond... The Macedonian film, YOU WON'T BE ALONE (2022), made its film premiere at Sundance 2022 where it got much notice. The film, having a ensemble cast, including Noomi Rapace, was picked up by Focus Features and released through VOD (and a limited theater run) in April. Most certainly arthouse, the movie is considered a horror film with its violent creature transformations and the inclusion of a witch. Nevena (Sara Klimoska) was promised to the witch Maria (Anamaria Marinca) as a baby by her mother. Her mother hides her in a cave, but on Nevena's sixteenth birthday, the witch comes back and takes her by force. Feral and having no social life these last fifteen years, Nevena has to learn on her own what it is to be both a witch and a human if she is to survive. With over 100+ reviews on the Rottentomatoes website, the film has a strong 93% approval. The movie is directed and written by Goran Stolevski, as his full-length motion picture directorial debut. The cast includes Sara Klimoska, Anamaria Marinca, Alice Englert, Carloto Cotta, and Noomi Rapace. Dark Discussions takes a look at this foreign language film and gives their thoughts.

In this Filmsuck episode we're talking about witches in film, a favorite subject of ours. We're focusing specifically on the revived figure of the truly frightening witch that is central to Robert Eggers' The Witch (2015) as well as the directorial debut of Goran Stolevski, You Won't Be Alone, which is currently playing in theaters. These brilliant witch films are part of the "folk horror revival" of the past decade. Join us as we explore that cinematic context as well, covered in detail in the 2021 documentary Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror.

After a short week, Erik Childress and Steve Prokopy double-up on the movie reviews this week with eight titles. They include a documentary about a “ballhawk” (Zack Hample vs. the World) and one about a type of restaurant that does not exist anymore (The Automat). Justin Kurzel's new film gets to the root of mental illness in a real-life Australian tragedy (Nitram) and a witch learns about life wearing the skins of different people (You Won't Be Alone). Richard Linklater explores life (notably his) around the space program in 1969 (Apollo 10 ½: A Spade Age Childhood) and Judd Apatow takes a satiric stab at making an action franchise at the height of the pandemic (The Bubble). Finally then there is a Chris Pine thriller that was completed back in 2019 (The Contractor) and the five-time delayed Sony Marvel tale that added at least one more critic to the lambast pile (Morbius). 0:00 - Outro 4:54 – Zack Hample vs. the World 14:56 – The Automat 27:01 – Nitram 34:37 – You Won't Be Alone 43:54 – Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood 54:11 – The Bubble 1:06:52 – The Contractor 1:16:50 - Morbius
