Fred White VK4NOE became a silent Key on 29th January 2025. Fred was a member of the Mount Isa and Districts Amateur Radio Group when it was formed in 1979. He was known around Australia as an active member of the Royal Navel Amateur Radio Society. He was a regular participant of the RNARS net held on 15 meters on Sunday mornings in the early 80's. REDFEST 25 "Adventures on HF" will be held on the 12th April 2025. Gates open at 9:00 AM. Our new venue will be the Deception Bay North State School, Old Bay Road, Deception Bay. I'm John, Secretary of the Darling Downs Radio Club and what a week it's been. And who expected such a confluence of events demonstrating how useful Amateur Radio could be in a time of stress and emergency? As this segment goes to air, the John Moyle Memorial Field Day will be in its final block. The field day celebrates readiness and willingness to operate portable, without connection to mains power, and to provide training for emergency conditions. And like the universe playing a massive prank, ex-tropical-cyclone Alfred showed us all how exactly ready we would be to deal with an actual natural event, a week before the competition and at least one WICEN training exercise had to be cancelled while we dealt with the civil emergency. News from the Sunshine Coast Amateur Radio Club, this is Gordon VK4VP for those who may have missed this last week due to TC Alfred. SCARC is having a car boot sale on March 22nd at the clubrooms 85 Godfreys Rd. Bli Bli. Entry and traders tables are free but we do require bookings to secure a traders spot. It will be located in the grounds of the clubroom so if you need shade apart from the few large trees, you will have to organise something yourself. Hello, I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I've been thinking. For so many of us, it is good riddance to Alfred, the cyclone that was. For many more, it is the harrowing task of saving what is left disposing of the too badly damaged and finding the path back to normality. We were fortunate that the drama that unfolded as the low-pressure system deluged the coast was kept away by the forces of nature or the whim of the gods, I don't know which. What I did know is that whilst Hervey Bay coastal suburbs were swamped we, only some 30 kilometres away, had sunshine and blue sky. Domestically, we had obtained another larger capacity generator for those times when the mains drop out and I had been preparing it for service prior to the entrance of Cyclone Albert. As it turned out, the engine needed some replacement parts which I had sourced from online vendors as I couldn't track down a local dealership for the brand. As the people of south-east Queensland honed their listening skills trying to get a sense of the forecast track and possible destination, I waited and watched the tracking information on my parts delivery. It was ironic that my preparedness ended up being arrested when the delivery services seemed to halt processing on Wednesday with Albert still expected to create havoc somewhere between Bribie Island and the Gold Coast. Now having dodged the proverbial bullet the parts have been delivered and our new but secondhand generator is finally commissioned into service. I suppose the point is that when we see the need to prepare for potential emergencies, we should press on and complete the jobs as delay could spell disaster. We were lucky this time but always there will be next time to deal with some drama and probably it will be weather-related. People in the radio community can now re-erect their sky-hooks without fear of galeforce winds and the lucky ones can enjoy the John Moyle activities of this weekend with hopefully more welcoming weather than most of us have had. I'm Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that's what I think…. how about you?

Interview by Kris PetersThere's something to be said when it comes to nostalgia and Aussie music.Perhaps more so than any other music listening country in the world, Australia genuinely loves and respects music from eras gone by, recognising not only the current state and crop of Australian artists, but also paying homage to the bands who paved the way for a prolonged period of success. It doesn't hurt when these bands continue to not only tour - but do so with the same youthful zest and energy they delivered in their heyday. And when a festival like Spring Loaded comes along on a now yearly basis further proof of the credentials and staying power of Aussie talent is laid bare on one stage over one day for all to see. This years first Spring Loaded, to be held at Bribie Island's Sandstone Point Hotel on June 3, showcases the best of the best of yesteryear, with Spiderbait headlining and being joined by Frenzal Rhomb, Shihad, Magic Dirt, Bodyjar, Eskimo Joe, Ratcat and Screamfeeder. The festival is living testament to the longevity of Australian bands and music and is all the more special for the fact it is made up only of bands from this part of the world.Shihad are the only New Zealand band on the line-up and are eager to get out there and play songs from their most recent album Old Gods, which hasn't yet received the attention it deserves due to recent world events.Frontman Jon Toogood joined HEAVY to chat about Spring Loaded and Shihad's place in the line-up."Any opportunity to get me in front of a crowd with that band I'm real happy about," he smiled. "I'm pretty excited."We bring up the quality of bands on the bill and the fact they are still drawing crowds decades after they first came out."It's almost like the nineties all over again," he laughed. "I like these festivals because it's not too uncomfortable backstage because I know everybody (laughs). It's a nice vibe backstage. Everyone is past that really hyper-competitive bollocks that we used to do when we were young, so everyone gets along a lot better. We're there to absolutely slay, but back in the day at the Big Day Out and stuff it was cut-throat."In the full interview Jon talks about the drawing power of older bands like these, why they still succeed, some of the bands on the line-up and his best touring memory of them, what we can expect from Shihad's set, learning to manage yourself and your body as your career progresses, new material and more.

Interview by Neville Pearce & Kris PetersThe World Is A Vampire Festival - featuring The Smashing Pumpkins, Jane's Addiction, RedHook, Battlesnake and Amyl & The Sniffers - kicked off last weekend in Brisbane with shows at Eaton's Hill Hotel and Sandstone Point Hotel in Bribie Island.HEAVY celebrated this momentous occasion by joining forces with Neville Pearce from Everblack Podcast to conduct backstage interviews, with this chat with Billy Corgan from The Smashing Pumpkins and his World Champion wrestler Carrie Morton a feature of the day.We start by talking about Corgan's goal in bringing a festival like The World Is A Vampire to life."We did it in Mexico City recently and had about 30,000 people in Mexico City," he smiled. "On the wrestling side it was the NWA versus AAA - AAA are the biggest Mexican based wrestling promotion - so it was a real honour to work with them. And then of course we had 30,000 fans coming out to see an incredible line-up of bands. The idea is to try and bring back a true alternative festival. As we've seen with many of the major festivals that were once alternative and they have gone very pop - that's their business so all good - but I came of age with Lollapalooza in the 1990s when it was a travelling festival - and it was very important for us and a generation of fans to see a truly alternative lineup. And think of that lineup. Beastie boys, George Clinton, Green Day, Urge Overkill, The Breeders, it was an incredible lineup and to this day people still stop me and say I was there. So you've gotta make memories but it's important to turnover that alternative culture."Neville elaborates on that by pointing out how important such festivals are to the younger generation who are being brought up more on computer games and the internet and may not have had the opportunity to be swept up in the world of such a festival."In many ways I grew up somewhat dispossessed by the world and I think it's even harder for young people today with the internet and social pressures, identity being a huge issue," Corgan measured. "Who are you? I think it's important that young people, if they feel alienated by society - and many do. Not everybody, but many do. They can come to a festival like The World Is A Vampire and find like minded people and to celebrate like minded artists. People always say, how does wrestling fit into that? Well wrestling really is one of the true last counter-culture things in the world. Just the fact that anybody even asks the question why wrestling? That just shows you that it still remains outside of the mainstream. That's the whole point. We want to present an alternative culture, and it doesn't stop with wrestling. It's fashion and lots of other things."In the full interview, Corgan talks more about the festival, future plans for it, the wrestling side of the entertainment, Carrie's history as a wrestler and putting it all on the line as champ, interviewing Eddie Van Halen, The Smashing Pumpkins new album Atum and more.

By Kris PetersWith the sudden influx of international touring artists currently setting their sights on Australia, the concert going public are understandably selective when it comes to venturing out.But one travelling musical spectacle that is impossible to resist is The World Is A Vampire Festival - led by The Smashing Pumpkins and Jane's Addiction - which kicks off on April 15 in Brisbane before taking in Bribie Island, Sydney, Melbourne, Ballarat, Adelaide and Newcastle before finishing up on the Gold Coast on April 30.Not only will fans be treated to two of the biggest and most successful bands of the last four decades, they will also have the chance to witness world wrestling live and like never before as Billy Corgan's troupe lines up against their Australian counterparts in a display of controlled hostility unlike anything witnessed on these shores before.Throw in Australian bands like Amyl & The Sniffers, RedHook and Battlesnake as well as select local supports and you have the makings of one of the biggest and best festivals to hit Down Under since forever. On the eve of their long journey to Australia, HEAVY had the privilege of sitting down for a chat with Jane's Addiction members Perry Farrell (vocals), Eric Avery (bass) and Stephen Perkins (drums) for an entertaining insight into what to expect."I'm just starting to pull out the boots," Farrell laughed when asked if the band had started packing yet. ""It was great to hear the list of shows said by an Australian," Perkins added, "because we've been looking at that list for the last two weeks and now I know where we're playing (laughs). We just got back from South America, so I didn't really unpack but I did wash everything and changed some ideas, but we're ready!"It's a long run of shows for all of the bands involved, so we press the boys on how they prepare mentally for a tour like this."We know Eric does his homework last," Farrell smiled. "For me, I start to imagine the stage. I start to imagine the people in the place and then I start to imagine what I would wear and like I say, I start with my feet because you don't wanna get up there with bad shoes (laughs). It will just bum your night out.""I play barefoot on the drumset," Perkins chimed in. "No gloves, no shoes or socks, but luckily I've got a room with a drum set here at the house so I've been playing every day and taking care of the mental side and keeping stimulated creatively. That's real important. Because the physical thing, I always keep tuned up. My stamina and endurance is always number one importance and always trying to stay with that creative juice so I can get up there and just hit the stage running."In the full interview the boys tell us what to expect from the shows, the wrestling side of things and the possibility of the bands getting involved, their previous manager, Australian Ted Gardner and some fun stories of him, their knowledge of the Australian bands playing including Perry taking his daughter to see Amyl & The Sniffers, the bands longevity and why plus more.

Few other artists have captured Australia's imagination quite like Ian Fairweather. This is the second part of a double episode on this 20th century artist. In the last episode I interviewed Claire Roberts, co -editor of the book 'Ian Fairweather A Life in Letters' and we talked about the events of Fairweather’s life from his early childhood.  In this episode I talk with Ann Thomson, one of Australia's leading contemporary artists who I have previously interviewed on this podcast. Ann met Fairweather on several occasions with her then husband, photographer Robert Walker. They visited him on Queensland's Bribie Island where he lived for the last 20 years of his life before he died in 1974.  He’s considered one of Australia’s most important artists. Although he was often described as an outsider or a recluse - he lived on Bribie Island in self-made huts apart from the rest of the community - he was actually quite sociable through his letters and welcomed friends who came to visit. He famously sailed off into the open sea from Darwin on a raft he built himself, heading for Portuguese Timor over 600km away.  It would be 16 days before he would reach land after his raft sailed off course and he had almost lost his life. The RAAF were called in and an obituary appeared in the newspaper. It became an international story. What he told Ann Thomson when she asked about the ordeal is priceless. The memories of Ann Thomson are interesting, insightful and humorous and gave me a better idea of the man who was Ian Fairweather. To hear the podcast click on 'play' beneath the above photo. Learning about someone through their letters is a fascinating exercise and this is precisely what Claire Roberts set out to do when she amassed over 700 letters of the celebrated 20th century artist Ian Fairweather. Together with cultural historian John Thompson, Roberts has produced a brilliant book 'Ian Fairweather A Life in Letters' which not only gives us an insight into Fairweather's life in his own words but provides context by setting periods of letters in chapters with their own introduction. The book is published by Text Publishing. Claire Roberts is an art historian, curator and Associate Professor of Art at the University of Melbourne, specialising in modern and contemporary Chinese art and the cultural flows between Australia and Asia. It was the author Murray Bail who suggested she write this book.  He had written a monograph on Fairweather and had already located many letters but while that monograph focussed on Fairweather's art, this book looks more at the man himself.  354 letters are ultimately included in this publication and the book was 12 years in the making. Fairweather lived an unusual life. Although he was born in Scotland in 1891, the last 20 years of his life he lived on Queensland’s Bribie Island in a hut he made himself with a thatched roof and dirt floor and photos of his huts are included in the book. However, the event which is probably the reason I became interested in Fairweather in the first place is the famous raft story where Fairweather sailed off into the open sea from Darwin heading for Portuguese Timor on a triangular raft he built himself and which was not much bigger than he was. What happened next was incredible. He’s without a doubt one of Australia’s most important artists, with his works held in almost every state and national institution as well as the Tate in London and other international museums. In the next episode of the podcast I talk with artist Ann Thomson who actually met Fairweather on several occasions. She brings him to life and reinforces many of the observations Claire Roberts makes in this episode.  Fairweather has been described as a recluse and a hermit but, as you will hear from Claire's careful consideration of his life, it's a little more complicated than that. Methane is 25 times more effective than CO2 at trapping heat in the atmosphere and one of the biggest sources is the gas expelled by cattle. It has been discovered that a seaweed which grows prolifically off the Queensland coast stops cattle producing methane if it’s added to their feed. Assoc Prof Nicholas Paul from the University of Southern Queensland is leading a project by the Seaweed Research Group on Bribie Island to find ways of farming the seaweed. He tells Mark the cattle love it and if it can be scaled up it could one day cut Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions by ten per cent.

We then move straight onto a question from a listener, and this week's question comes from a Mr. Michael Jones, and Michael's question is asking us what car he should buy to replace his Holden Commodore SSV Redline. The criteria is that the replacement car needs to be newer than 2010, preferably a wagon, and less than 100,000km's and a max of $70,000. We then answer a second question from a Mr. Taylor, who asked why clutches smell when you burn them. Kim is a Joondoburri Salt-Water woman from Yirin, the traditional name of Bribie Island, South East Queensland. She found out at the age of 21 that she is Aboriginal. As a child, Kim's father was sent to a boys’ home to learn Western ways, his mother having been persuaded that this was in his best interests. In this institution, her father sustained appalling abuse. Now that her father walks with the Ancestors, Kim shares with the Creating Space Project the story of her family and her culture. As well as the trauma sustained by First Nations Peoples as a result of colonisation, this is a story of resilience, growth and joy. “To lose 65 000 years of culture, to lose my language, to lose my stories… I don’t know my language. I would so love to. I know the name of my language. It was Oondoo. But I don’t know anything. Any words. Nothing. It’s a sad thing. But… I know where I’m from. I can connect to my ancestors. I can connect with my country.” TW: Abuse, suicide attempts

Curator insights - Australian galleries

After returning to Australia following his ill-fated raft journey to Timor in 1952, Ian Fairweather moved to Bribie Island in Queensland. Here he began a series of large religious paintings, of which 'Last Supper' is considered the finest. Elements of his earlier travels through Asia, knowledge of calligraphy and exposure to contemporary European art all fuse in this work, one of Fairweather’s earliest attempts at abstraction. The title refers to Christ’s last meal with his 12 disciples, yet as Fairweather biographer Murray Bail observes: In what would seem to be a complex repainting of Leonardo’s full-frontal mural, Fairweather tilts the long table, but there is no clearly apparent Christ. Instead, two forces of waving hands and sandalled feet huddle on the left and right. The erupting bedlam suggests more the impending martyrdom of our Saviour by the mob …
