KPFA Theatre Critic Richard Wolinsky reviews “The Monsters” by Ngozi Anyanwu at Berkeley Rep's Peets Theatre through May 3, 2026. West Coast Premiere. TEXT OF REVIEW: (minor differences between the text and the recorded review). Putting aside solo performances, the heart of the theatrical experience usually lies in the interaction between two characters, no matter the size of the cast. Obviously, several characters in plays can interact with each other at once, but the most intense scenes are usually one on on. When these interchanges work well, we talk about the chemistry between actors. When they don't, it becomes obvious. One actor is listening and responding, the other pretending, and the audience knows it. Here's the thing, though. None of it quite works the same way in film or TV. There are multiple takes, cross-cutting. Confrontations might even be recorded separately and put together in post-production. It feels real, but too often it isn't. Only in live theatre, happening in real time, can we see the the meeting in real time, in front of us. And that's the key to why The Monsters by Ngozi Anyanwu, now at Berkeley Rep's Peets Theatre through May 3rd works so well. Big is a fighter in the world of Mixed Martial Arts, which has grown into a major sports competition and combines various disciplines which can, at times, seem almost balletic. Lil, whose real name is Josephine, shows up after one of his bouts, and after some back and forth, reveals she's the younger half-sister he abandoned in his late teens to go out in the world and find himself. It's awkward. They'd been close when she was at the start of her middle childhood, and then he was gone. Gradually, he will now feel the pull of family, as will she. But it will take time, and effort on both their parts. This is a play about siblings, about the restrictions inherent upon black people growing up in mixed and broken families, with the physicality of the competition serving as metaphor for their growing relationship, as attitudes and situations shift between the two. The playwright herself, Ngozi Anyanwu plays Lil, spunky, irreverent, and Sullivan Jones more than matches her as Big, in both his physicality and his emotional truthfulness. Their interplay, their moments of quiet, of fun, of anger, and of confrontation, can only reach its apex in live theatre. The playwright notes that quote here are big political things happening in the world, I think the way to engage politically is by humanizing people, and that starts at home. I'm always trying to make sure people feel seen. In The Monsters, both through the play's script, through the direction of Tamilla Woodward, and through the often raw and honest acting, these characters and their need for connection is clearly and satisfyingly seen. The Monsters by Ngozi Anyanwu plays at Berkeley Rep's Peets Theatre through May 3rd. For more information you can go to Berkeley.org. I'm Richard Wolinsky on Bay Area Theatre for KPFA. KPFA Theatre Critic Richard Wolinsky reviews “How Shakespeare Changed My Life” at Berkeley Rep Peets Theatre through March 1, 2026. TEXT OF REVIEW You're just a kid. You're Black .Your teachers think you're stupid, a hopeless fat boy. At home, your mom tossed out your junkie dad. Mom herself is ice cold, and when you're sixteen, Mom throws you out on the street. You're homeless, destitute, and you love Shakespeare. That's the start of the world premiere one person play, How Shakespeare Saved My Life, written and performed by Jacob Ming-Trent, now at Berkeley Rep's Peets Theatre through March 1st. The play is billed as semi-autobiographical, and it's unclear what the relationship is between Jacob the character and Jacob the playwright performer. The real Jacob, for example, was already on stage at age eleven, and was admitted to acting school in New York at the age of seventeen, before developing a career in Hollywood. It shouldn't matter, but in retrospect, it does. The story, at least, feels real, and Jacob Ming-Trent has the acting chops to make it so, to grab an audience and to keep them. When the play works, it works wonders. The basic idea is that Shakespeare himself was an urban artist, in his own lifetime no different than Tupac or Biggie or the Wu-Tang Clan. Famous lines from the plays are easily incorporated into the dialogue, and each takes on new meaning and resonance. The Elizabethan poet meets the street. Jacob Ming-Trent has an innate ability to create empathy, an empathy that expands via the brilliant immersive staging of director Tony Taccone. When the lights, the sound, the acting and the script all work in tandem, the result can be stunning, as witness the character Jacob's discovery of James Baldwin, or his scenes with his dad. The theater shakes, the images flashed behind the actor never stop. But not everything does work. Phone dialogues with God through an old fashioned telephone fall flat, as does a sequence in a jail cell with an individual of uncertain gender. Some Shakespearean monologues go on too long, and the play itself does not stick the landing, leaving the audience wondering how the play's Jacob became the stage's Jacob. Audience participation, so successful earlier, now dissipates in a final, unearned test. But as a world premiere, some of these issues can be corrected going forward and there is enough here, and Jacob Ming-Trent is talented enough, to find solutions to these and other problematic elements. How Shakespeare Saved My Life is a work in progress, but even so, it's a diamond in the rough. How Shakespeare Saved My Life plays at Berkeley Rep's Peets Theatre through March 1st. Chad Peets is one of the greatest sales leaders and recruiters of the last 25 years. From 2018 to 2023, Chad was a Managing Director at Sutter Hill Ventures. Chad has worked with the world's best CEOs and CROs to build world-class go-to-market organizations. Chad is currently a member of the Board of Directors for Lacework and Luminary Cloud and on the boards of Clumio and Sigma Computing. He previously served as a board member for Astronomer, Transposit, and others. He was an early-stage investor at Snowflake, Sigma, Observe, Lacework, and Clumio. In Today's Discussion with Chad Peet's We Discuss: 1. You Need a CRO Pre-Product: Why does Chad believe that SaaS companies need a CRO pre-product? Should the founder not be the right person to create the sales playbook? What should the founder look for in their first CRO hire? Does any great CRO really want to go back to an early startup and do it again? 2. What Everyone Gets Wrong in Building Sales Teams: Why are most sales reps not performing? How long does it take for sales teams to ramp? How does this change with PLG and enterprise? What are the benchmarks of good vs great for average sales reps? How do founders and VCs most often hurt their sales teams and performance? 3. How to Build a Hiring Machine: What are the single biggest mistakes people make when hiring sales reps and teams? Are sales people money motivated? How to create comp plans that incentivise and align? Why does Chad believe that any sales rep that does not want to be in the office, is not putting their career and development first? Why is it harder than ever to recruit great sales leaders today? 4. Lessons from Scaling Sales at Snowflake: What are the single biggest lessons of what worked from scaling Snowflake's sales team? What did not work? What would he do differently with the team again? What did Snowflake teach Chad about success and culture and how they interplay together?
A few weeks ago, we had an homage to Star Trek. Well, Rich Katz (ably guided by Will Shortz) has dug into the nostalgia vault once more, and came up with this fine ode to a 1990's sitcom whose name we will not mention in these show notes -- to preserve the element of surprise, as it were.Being a Sunday crossword, there were numerous notable clues. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's show featured an interview with James Muir, author of “Unsticking Deals,” and his colleague Patti Peets, Chief Revenue Officer, Unislink. JAMES' TIP: “Be a domain expert in addition to being a sales expert. If you're a new salesperson, what that means is you need to master your industry so well that if the person that you sell to said, “Hey, I'm going to be gone for a month, could you come in and sit in and do my job for me for a month while I'm on vacation?” If you can say you can do that, then you've learned enough about your industry. Until you can say that, you need to keep grinding until you understand that, because what's going to happen is the credibility that you'll have with clients when you're with them will go off the charts.” PATTI'S TIP: “Really go through every deal in your pipeline. If it's been in that stage for more than 14 days maybe, or 21 days, you should go through that list of questions to really score yourself and be honest with yourself, and then admit this deal is stuck. Then put a plan together, follow some of those methods and techniques that James offers up, and watch what happens. You will have deals that literally unstick, and maybe not every deal, but you will have deals that get unstuck by following this process.”

In this episode, we share the audio from a breakout session at STS Rhode Island. One of New England's early settlers, Anne Bradstreet left behind her comfortable life in England for the wilderness of Massachusetts. Though she would become America's first published poet, her most important roles were as devoted wife, nurturing mother, and committed saint. Through infertility, loss, fear, and pain, Bradstreet demonstrated faith and faithfulness. Nearly 400 years later, let Bradstreet's life and poetry instruct you, her Christian sisters, how to live and minister in small-town New England. Heather Peets is a pastor's wife, mom of five, and teacher. She and her family live in Vermont where her husband pastors a small but committed congregation. KPFA theatre critic Richard Wolinsky discusses the year in theatre in the Bay Area in 2023, plus a top ten list and two honorable mentions. Text of the podcast. In the Bay Area, Live theatre companies continued in 2023 to adapt to the post-Covid world. While movie audience sizes seems to be returning to pre-pandemic numbers. live theater remains mostly on life support across the board, mainly because season subscriptions are down by at least a third or maybe more, which means theatergoers are buying tickets on a show by show basis. That makes planning difficult, and it also means artistic directors are less likely to produce shows that are more challenging in favor of audiences pleasers such as musicals, comedies, and most importantly, the warhorses that folks are willing to see over and over again. The great multi-theatre venue, Piano Fight, in the Tenderloin closed its doors in March, leaving a host of younger theatregoers bereft. Bay Area Musicals didn't survive the pandemic, and its successor Landmark Musicals did not get past 2023. Marin Theatre Company, ACT, and the Magic have had truncated seasons, and Cal Shakes chose not to have a season at all. Custom Made is on life support and may never return. But there was still quite a bit of quality theatergoing to be had in the plastic year, and here are ten examples fin no particular order. Clyde's, a former Tony nominee by Lynn Nottage had a sensational production at Berkeley Rep's Peets theatre. As did the creepy and scary Let the Right One in at Berkeley Rep's Roda Theatre. Margo Hall was phenomenal in Josephine's Feast over at the Magic, and it doesn't get any better than J. Jha in Gertha Reddy's adaptation of the Mahabharata at Z Space, co-produced by the Oakland Theatre Project. Poor Yella Rednecks, Vietgone II at ACT's Strand Theatre looked at a Vietnamese refugee family in America, and Cambodian Rock Band at ACT focused on the generational aftermath of the Killing Fields and the Cambodian Genocide. Then there was Nollywood Dreams, a screamingly funny look at the Nigerian film industry, and Billy Crudup's brilliant performance in Harry Clarke at Berkeley Rep's Roda Theatre. Rounding out the top ten are San Francisco Playhouse's brilliant production of A Chorus Line, and the very weird, funny and horrifying Locusts Have No King at New Conservatory Theatre. A couple of honorary mentions go to Kander and Ebb's brilliant The Scottsboro Boys at 42nd Street Moon, and William Finn's 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at TheatreWorks. The last few years have seen an increase in union organizing and employee protests in non-traditional areas – retail, tech, cannabis dispensaries, college campuses, non-profits. We also saw a spike in the number of strikes in 2022. Organizing has definitely been in the news as well-known employers have experienced organizing campaigns – Starbucks, Amazon, Trader Joe's, Apple retail stores, Peets coffee etc. What does “union organizing” mean? Why are employees seeking assistance from unions? Why might they be willing to strike? Do employees have rights to act together even without a union?YLR Host is joined tonight by Jill Coffman, Regional Director of The National Labor Relations Board, Beth Mora of Mora Employment Law, Thomas Lenz, a partner at Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud & Romo in Pasadena, Ca, and Jill Coffman, Regional Director of The National Labor Relations Board.Questions for Jeff's guests? But every time you go into a situation, it's a unique situation so you're gonna have to tweak and make changes to that playbook to adjust, if you will, for the company that you're in, the market that you're in, the product that you're selling, etc.”Chad: "You have to be focused on the long-term and building out world class sales organizations. This recruiter has to be focused on exactly that. If they're focused on transactions, if they're focused on fees and you and you can figure this out really quickly, what their objectives are, their objective has to be your objective."Check out John McMahon's book here: https://www.amazon.com/Qualified-Sales-Leader-Proven-Lessons/dp/0578895064Additional Resources:Key Characteristics for CROs to Hone in Each Stage of Growth | https://forc.mx/3uUCM3ZTaking on a New VP of Sales Role? In this episode, Kenneth sits down with Stephen Tribble to discuss the waves of coffee. Or to put it another way, they discuss the different types of coffee that have been developed and enjoyed during each era. This episode covers pre-wave, first, second, third and fourth wave coffee. They explain when each wave started, how the product was presented, prepared, and enjoyed. Finishing the episode by discussing the fourth wave, which is just starting to emerge and evolve. KEY TAKEAWAYS Most people do not know what a coffee wave is. During the podcast, Kenneth explains what the term means. The first wave started during the late stages of the industrial revolution, with roasted and pre-ground coffee. During the first wave, the aim was to make coffee more accessible. The second wave saw companies like Peets and Starbucks enter the market. During the second wave, there was more focus on taste. It was the second wave that pushed the industry forwards, and created the foundations for today´s coffee culture - especially the coffee shop culture. Light roasts only really took off during the third wave. Great tasting coffee has led to more people drinking their coffee without cream or sugar. The industry is now more interested in the science behind what makes a great coffee. There is still a lot of debate about what the fourth wave is. BEST MOMENTS ‘The waves are mainly a US thing. ´ ‘During the third wave, the roast is more towards a lighter roast.' ‘The third wave focuses more on the science of coffee.'
