In this episode, the Haitian sensation Will Baptiste returns to continue our discussion on men surviving and thriving in today's society but through the lens of his book, The Will To Rise: How To Persevere In The Face of Adversity. This book touches on some areas of life and things men experience, but they often have to keep it close hold and never, ever discuss it. We are talking about things like sexual abuse and trauma, black men's incarceration, domestic violence, mental health, and so much more. Some questions we answer are:What happens to men who are victims of abuse? How do women take advantage of men, and how does it impact them? Can a woman raise a son? Can men and women be friends? If you wonder how these questions relate to adversity in a man's life, you'll have to tune in and listen to this episode. Will shares what he has learned from his personal experience and that of those he has worked with to educate both men and women and begin to shift our relationships. This further impacts our work performance, physical health, and, let's not forget, relationships. According to our guest, money mentor, coach, and accounting and tax doctor, Dakota Grady, America is in a financial crisis, but there is hope. You know you go off to college, and as you adjust to this new phase in life, you add about 15 pounds to your body. For the past few years, as a result of the COVID pandemic, many of us were primarily working at home, and as a result, we packed on a few extra pounds. Working away in our homes, we became sedentary, did not take good care of our health, or practiced a solid self-care routine. Now that we are traveling again, going to networking events and conferences, or maybe going back into the office, even if it is just a few days a week, we have encountered a small, well, actually large problem. The clothes hanging in our closet no longer fit. One of the best ways to combat disease, illness, or fatigue is to properly care for our minds, souls, and bodies. Now, we talk a lot about the first two, our minds and souls, on the show, but joining us today is Coach Larry Lee, who is going to discuss the third piece, our bodies. In the episode, we discuss:

Episode 173: Textures: The Beauty of Black Hair with guest Dr. Tameka N. Ellington Black hair has been deemed by many as bad hair that needs to be permed to be accepted in society. For many, their self-esteem is wrapped up in their hair. The success in their career, relationship, in life is associated with how good their hair looks. And for many, black hair is bad hair and limits just how far you can go in life. The caring of black hair is a major economic industry with a rich history that very few understand. In Fall 2021, Dr. Tameka Ellington and her team will bring to life the history, culture, politics, and joy of Black hair in their upcoming exhibition, "TEXTURES: the history and art of Black hair." Hair has been a controversial issue in Black communities since the start of the Atlantic slave trade. Within that struggle, artists worldwide have found the strength to breathe pride and joy back into a community deprived of cultural love. In this episode, Dr. Ellington shares with us why this remains an important topic even today. Dr. Tameka N. Ellington is an Associate Professor at the Kent State University (KSU) Fashion School and Interim Assistant Dean for the College of the Arts. Her creative scholarship has been shown in national and international exhibitions and is often inspired by African culture and folklore. She publishes research around the social-psychological aspects of dress for African Americans, particularly hair. "Imagine a world where everyone is loved, everyone is happy, and everyone is free to be themselves” ~ Lane Cobb Speaker, author, healer, and coach, Lane Cobb knows what it’s like to give away your power to circumstances, complacency and compromise. Having experienced being bullied and being a victim of rape, she felt powerless to change her life. For many years she was a source of strength for others, but she lived trapped in fear, anger, and regret and was not able to fully pursue her dreams. Lane was able to reclaim her power over her past and gave herself permission to be exactly who she is in all her greatness and glory! After creating the life she truly desired, she designed her signature program to support and move women forward in a powerful way. Once they complete the program, women find themselves standing in their own power, fully accessing their unique gifts and talents, living their lives according to what is most important to them, rather than according to their circumstances. During this episode, Lane will share with us her triumphant story and strategies from her popular book, Reclaim Your Power – 5 Steps for Living Life On Purpose. If you want to love yourself unconditionally, express yourself fully, and live a life of passion, power, and purpose you won't want to miss this show...
Disability does not mean failure.... Being told your child has a disability can be shocking news. Parents experience a range of emotions - confusion, anger, fear, shame, etc. They need to learn a new way of life, making adjustments and navigating through what can be viewed as a uncooperative bureaucratic process. In the midst of all of this one may forget that each child is endowed with the traits and skills needed to perform their unique life purpose; even individuals with disabilities. The challenge becomes finding these traits and unlocking that potential. Ancient wisdom says, “Teach each child according to his method and way of learning." This weeks guest, Sharon R. Saroff, M.S.Ed. is the founder of SEDRA, Special Education Disabilities Resources & Advocacy, with a mission to help individuals with disabilities find their potential and meet with success. SEDRA helps families and school districts work together to help children get the services they need and to “level the playing field” so that children with special needs find success. Sharon, Special Education Consultant, Parent Advocate, and Speaker with over 20 years experience, offers a unique perspective having grown up with a learning disability and as the mother of two children with disabilities. Special education is not just her passion, it is her life. Join Mark and Carolyn as Sharon talks about her journey and shares tips and strategies to help children with disabilities lead a happy and successful life.
