Just in time for spooky season, Jaclyn speaks to writer/producer David Kirschner (Hocus Pocus, Child's Play) about kindness in his life, his fascination with family & fantasy stories, and how the kindness of others propelled his career.David Kirschner's imagination has spawned a body of work that has evoked laughter, fear, suspense, and heartfelt emotion for over 40 years. It was 1975 when the legendary Neil Diamond laid eyes on 19-year-old David's illustrations. From here, David would photograph, and design twenty-two album covers, including the Grammy-nominated for design, The Jazz Singer. Soon after, David's talents were enlisted by famed creator, Jim Henson, for work on Sesame Street and The Muppets. Next, David harkened the voice of his creative entrepreneurial spirit, creating a fantasy garden world, Rose-Petal Place. Inspired by his daughters, Rose-Petal Place quickly blossomed into a book series, toys, apparel, television specials, and a float in the Macys Day Parade. This success brought David to the attention of Steven Spielberg. Backed by Steven's company, David created and produced the Oscar-nominated and two-time Grammy-winning, An American Tail, which spawned a theatrical sequel, and television series. It wouldn't be long before David struck again, but this time it was the fear of his sister's dolls that would soon become the horror icon, Chucky, in Child's Play. Chucky has prospered in 7 films, and the Chucky VT series is in its third year with an average score of 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. David ran Hanna Barbera Studios as President and Chairman for four years, where he led the resurgence of the venerable animation house. During his reign, David co-wrote and produced the two-time Emmy nominated live action, The Dreamer of Oz, with legendary writer, Richard Matheson, and produced the live-action feature The Flintstones. David's book, The Pagemaster was translated into fourteen languages around the world and became a film starring Macaulay Culkin. David produced for Disney, based on his story, the film Hocus Pocus and Hocus Pocus 2, Hocus Pocus 3 is in pre-production.His other projects include; Frailty, Cats Don't Dance, animated feature Titan A.E, Secondhand Lions, Miss Potter, and Martian Child, David also collaborated with Ron Howard to produce Curious George. He continues today as Executive Producer on the multi-Emmy-winning Curious George PBS daytime series. Ron Howard has been signed to direct a live-action Curious George, that David will produce with Imagine Entertainment. David has continued to honor his commitment to children and society with dedicated positions, Ambassador to The University of Southern California School of Cinema, Trustee of the Board of Crossroads School, Board of Directors for Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, and Board Member of The Center for Early Education. This podcast is one of the many ways we live out our organization's mission to educate and inspire people to choose kindness. I'm delighted to have back on Admissions Straight Talk, David Kirschner, Associate Dean of Admissions, Financial Aid, and Innovation at USC Gould School of Law. Dean Kirschner earned his undergrad degree at USC, in Political Science and Film-Production. He then earned his JD at California Western School of Law. He has been in law school admissions since 2006, when he joined Loyola Law as an Associate Director of Admissions. In 2011, he became Director of Admissions at USC Gould, and in 2016 he became USC Gould's Associate Dean and Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid Dean Kirschner, thanks for joining me again on Admissions Straight Talk. [1:59] Thank you. I'm happy to be here, Linda. I always like to start with this question in case some people may not have listened to the previous episode. Can you give us an overview of the more distinctive elements of USC Gould's JD program? [2:03] Certainly. I think one of the things that really sets our JD program apart, is the fact that it's relatively small in class size, and that allows us to offer a very student-centered approach to the program. I like to tell prospective students, admitted students and enrolled students, that they're not merely passers by during their three years in the JD program, but that they're owners of their legal education. And our small size and our student-centered approach really do allow us to give students the opportunity to take ownership of their legal education. How does that ownership manifest itself? Does it mean there's more flexibility in the program and students have more opportunity to shape the program that they engage in? [2:51] Absolutely. I think it's both of those things. From a curricular standpoint, once a student gets beyond the first year required courses, in the second and third year, we have very few requirements, it's a handful. There's an upper division writing requirement, there is a required class on race, racism and the law, that's a new addition since we last talked, and that's something we're very proud of, that's now part of our curriculum, right. So there's that upper division writing requirement, there's the race, racism and the law course. And then there's an experiential learning requirement, so we want to ensure that our students have some kind of practical experience before they graduate. Beyond those three requirements, it's really up to the student to shape those second and third years in a way that they believe will most benefit them. The USC Gould website emphasizes the flexibility of the curriculum as well as the experiential learning opportunities. Can you touch on the experiential learning opportunities? I know they're quite broad. [3:49]

Hocus Pocus (1993) PG 1h 36m Jennie and Sarah take listeners away into a discussion of magic, innocence and what makes witches scary. In the first of four special Screen Scares episodes made for October, Screen Cares co-hosts explore why the 1993 Halloween film favorite Hocus Pocus reveals deeper truths about how innocence and evil intersect in insidious ways. Listeners are invited to reminisce about their special movie viewing traditions, ask themselves if immortality is a blessing or a curse, and reflect on what scares them and what that says about us as a person and a culture. 8-Hocus Pocus (1993): Is Hocus Pocus Ever Really Child's Play? Episode Transcript Episode Page with Pictures Host: Jennie Ziverk Carr Co-Host: Sarah Woolverton-Mohler Screen Shares Rating: Buddy Screen Hocus Pocus is a delightful movie to watch with adults friends while snickering at silly references to yabbos and virginity, but may be a smidge awkward to watch with kids despite the PG rating Screen Sparks: What if we cherished innocence and welcomed aging? Is love and morality the only reason immortality is a curse? (I'm looking at you vampires)? Why are witches scary? The witches need the book, but the kids think it is devoid of power after their death. To what extent do evil things hold the power of their owner? Although it is unknown precisely where and when the phrase “trick or treat” was coined, the custom had been firmly established in American popular culture by 1951, when trick-or-treating was depicted in the Peanuts comic strip. In 1952, Disney produced a cartoon called “Trick or Treat” featuring Donald Duck and his nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie. https://www.history.com/news/halloween-trick-or-treating-origins Not surprising that David Kirschner would write this oddly mocking to innocence movie. There may even be a special guest or two in this one... Today's guest is the iconic producer, screenwriter, illustrator and all-around creative mastermind David Kirschner. His career is like the perfect trick-or-treat bag, brimming with a variety of treats. Kirschner began his illustrious career as an illustrator for Jim Henson's Muppet and Sesame Street characters, and also creating art for prolific talents like Neil Diamond. At 23, he wrote and illustrated a series of children's books entitled Rose Petal Place. Success struck like lightning in 1986, when Kirschner created and executive produced An American Tail alongside Steven Spielberg, which went on to become the highest-grossing non-Disney producers animated feature of all-time and spawned several sequels and a tv spinoff. In 1989, Kirschner was appointed the chairman of Hanna-Barbera Productions, where he worked on countless iconic properties from The Addams Family to the Flinstones to The Pagemaster, which is one of my all-time favorites. You may also know him as the creator of Chucky, the insidious doll that has been terrorizing viewers across a hit franchise of slasher films and most recently a television series. Currently the head of his own production company, aptly named David Kirschner Productions, here are some other highlights along the way: the golden globe-nominated film Miss Potter starring Renée Zellweger, the Curious George franchise and an animated special of Ray Bradbury's legendary book The Halloween Tree. Of course, we are here today to focus on one particularly glorious story that was plucked from the patch of David's spooktacular mind: Hocus Pocus. David first conjured up the idea for three evil witches vying to suck the life out of children as a bedtime story for his own kids. As magic so often does, it seemingly took on a life of its own. Almost three decades later, Hocus Pocus is a cult classic and there's a sequel on the way! Hocus Pocus 2 soars on to Disney+ on September 30, with all three witches - Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy - reprising their wicked roles. Ahead of the sequel, David so graciously talked with me about the kindness he felt making the original and then returning to the story. As he zoomed in from his otherworldly office, he showed me the original Black Flame Candle, Winnie's spell book, and above all else, kindness. Got kindness tips or stories? Join BP, Coop and Justin as we discuss the first season of Chucky, the sequel television series in the Child's Play/Chucky franchise. The series takes place after the events of Cult of Chucky. In the city of Hackensack, New Jersey, 14-year-old Jake Wheeler buys a Good Guy doll at a yard sale to use it in his contemporary art project. He later discovers that the doll is possessed by the soul of serial killer Charles Lee Ray, who in this form is known as Chucky. Jake soon becomes a suspect in a series of strange events involving the doll, who unleashes a wave of shocking murders around the town. Some of the boy's classmates will also see themselves linked to these events. In addition, a series of flashbacks explore Charles's past as a seemingly normal kid who somehow became one of Hackensack's most notorious killers.Follow the Complete Guide to Horror Movies podcast on our social channels below.↪ Facebook↪ TikTok↪ Twitter↪ Instagram↪ Subscribe to our YouTube channel↪ Tip us $5↪ LinktreeOn January 29, 2019, it was reported the series was in development on Syfy, with Don Mancini serving as the series creator. Mancini was also expected to serve as an executive producer alongside David Kirschner and Nick Antosca. On January 11, 2020, during NBCUniversal's presentation at the TCA Winter Press Tour in Pasadena, California, it was announced that Syfy had given the production a straight-to-series order, with Harley Peyton set to serve as an executive producer alongside Mancini, Kirschner, and Antosca. Universal Content Productions would be involved producing the series. Mancini was announced to write all episodes of the first season, though he ended up employing a team of writers, and directed the first episode. For Chucky's character, he was allowed to use the word "f**k" a maximum of ten times per episode.Mancini, who began working for television on the Hannibal series, wanted to "reinvent" the Chucky franchise by bringing it to this format, and subsequently expand its fandom. He took a somewhat autobiographical approach to Jake's character, a gay teenager whose father is not accepting of the boy's "burgeoning sexual and romantic identity". The director cites this conflict as referential to his own adolescence. The show is a direct sequel to Cult of Chucky (2017), where the cliffhanger ending puts the titular character "on the road to a sexual exploration" after he transfers his soul to a female body. As an innovation for the character, Chucky is also used as a "metaphor" of the real life bully, guising himself to be "charming [and] funny" and manipulating people (what Mancini called "the ultimate bully"). By making him close to Jake, whose struggles are related to those of the LGBT community, the series also acknowledges that "Chucky himself has a queer kid" (Glen/Glenda, from Seed of Chucky).According to Decider's Jon O'Brien, "queer characters have been a Child's Play mainstay ever since Bride of Chucky's ill-fated David (Gordon Michael Woolvett) back in 1998", but this series marks the first time they have such a prominent presence. With eight hours to explore different sides of the story, Mancini saw the opportunity to elucidate the killer's past and answer questions that fans had been asking, like who his first victim was and how he met his bride Tiffany. While working on the show, Mancini was concerned with the potential impact the 2019 Child's Play reboot could have had in the franchise, speculating that, had it been a success, Universal Pictures could have decided to abandon the original film continuity. However, the reboot film was not the success Universal expected and a sequel has not been produced. On November 29, 2021, USA Network and Syfy renewed the series for a second season which is set to premiere in 2022.#horror #movie #death #horrorfilm #splatter #deathscene #blood #gore #scarymovie #horror #completeguidetohorror #horrormovie #scary #creepy #graphic #gay #lgbt #chucky #charlesleeray #andybarclay #donmancini #braddourif #childsplay #gayhorror #cultofchucky #tiffany #tiffanydoll #jennifertilly #devonsawa #scifi #scifichannel #lexi #tvshow #chuckytvseries #chuckytv #glen #glenda #nonbinary #transrights #wheatus #teenagedirtbag

He then finds himself trapped inside the library, where he must battle his way through literary classics come to life if he is to find his way home. Join BP, Coop and Justin as we discuss Curse of Chucky, the 2013 direct-to-DVD sequel that reignited the Chucky franchise as it returned to a more horror centric film. In 2013, a Good Guy doll called Chucky mysteriously arrives in the mail at the isolated home of paraplegic Nica Pierce and her mother Sarah. Sarah repeatedly and compulsively paints pictures of the same flowers. Later that night, Sarah is found dead from a stab wound and her death is ruled as a suicide. Nica is visited by her sister Barb, accompanied by her husband Ian, their daughter Alice, live-in nanny Jill, and priest Father Frank. Alice finds Chucky and is allowed to keep him. That evening, while Alice and Nica are making chili for dinner, Chucky secretly pours rat poison into one of the dinner bowls. Father Frank eats the poison. After he leaves, he gets sick and ends up in a car accident that decapitates him. That night, Nica wonders where the doll came from and investigates Chucky on the internet; she finds news articles about the murders tied to both the doll and Charles Lee Ray. In an August 2008 interview, Don Mancini and David Kirschner spoke of a planned reboot of the Chucky franchise, to be written and directed by Mancini. They described their choice of a remake over a sequel as a response to the will of the fans, who "want to see a scary Chucky movie again... to go back to the straightforward horror rather than the horror comedy." They indicated that Brad Dourif would return as the voice of Chucky. In a subsequent interview, Mancini described the remake as a darker and scarier retelling of the original film, but one that, while having new twists and turns, would not stray too far from the original concept. At a 2009 horror convention, Dourif confirmed his role in the remake. At a reunion panel at the Mad Monster Party horror and sci-fi convention, the cast and crew from the original film confirmed that both a remake and a spin-off are in development. Writer Don Mancini and producer David Kirschner worked on a sequel then titled Revenge of Chucky. On Rotten Tomatoes, 76% of 21 critics have given the film a positive review, with an average rating of 6.2/10. The site's critics consensus states: "The franchise hex of disappointing sequels is broken by going back to basics in this chilling entry, restoring a sense of playfulness to the Chucky saga." According to Metacritic, the film received "mixed or average reviews" based on an average score of 58 out of 100 from 5 critics. An early review posted on Bloody Disgusting on August 2, 2013, was very favourable of the film. In it, Brad Miska stated, "Curse of Chucky may just be the best home video sequel since Wrong Turn 2. Join BP, Coop and Justin as we discuss Bride of Chucky, the 1998 sequel that takes a more comedic-horror turn for the Chuck franchise. Tiffany Valentine, a former lover and accomplice of serial killer Charles Lee Ray, bribes a police officer into giving her the dismembered parts of a children's doll—which Ray's soul inhabited—from an evidence locker before murdering him. Believing that Ray's soul still inhabits the doll, Tiffany stitches and staples Chucky back together and reenacts the voodoo ritual which had instilled Ray's soul inside the doll ten years prior. Though her incantations appear to fail, Chucky comes alive and smothers Tiffany's goth admirer Damien to death with a pillow as Tiffany watches in excitement. Tiffany presents Chucky with a ring he had left behind the night he was killed, which she believed to be an engagement ring. When Chucky explains he never intended on marrying Tiffany, she locks him in a playpen and taunts him with a bride doll. Chucky escapes the playpen and murders Tiffany by electrocuting her in a bathtub. He then transports her soul into the bride doll, and says they must retrieve a magical amulet that was buried with his human body in order to transfer their souls into the bodies of Tiffany's neighbor Jesse and his girlfriend Jade. Mancini said, "Like most genres, the horror genre goes in cycles and I think we can thank Kevin Williamson and Scream for reinvigorating the market. Over the years, I had been imagining new scenarios for this series. And what we've ended up with is—incredibly—part horror, part comedy, part romance and part road movie. It's a really cool blend of the genuinely creepy and the really funny." Ronny Yu was hired to direct the film after Kirschner and Mancini were "amazed" by his film The Bride with White Hair, and was allowed to use his creative freedom and the ability to hire his collaborators Peter Pau and David Wu from Hong Kong. The inspiration to create a girlfriend for Chucky came from David Kirschner after he saw a copy of the classic Bride of Frankenstein in a video store. Mancini loved the idea and created Tiffany. He said, "After all, two dolls running around the country together and killing people a la Natural Born Killer Dolls or Barbie and Clyde is really pretty funny." Join BP, Coop and Justin as we discuss Child's Play, the original and first instalment in the chucky franchise. In Childs Play, Detective Mike Norris chases fugitive serial killer Charles Lee Ray through the streets of Chicago and into a toy store. After being shot by Norris, a dying Ray performs a voodoo chant to transfer his soul to one of the Good Guy-brand talking dolls on display. The store is struck by lightning and explodes, and Norris finds Ray's lifeless body in the rubble next to the doll.Widow Karen Barclay's six-year-old son Andy desperately wants a Good Guy doll for his birthday, but she cannot afford one. Soon after, she learns that a homeless man outside of her workplace has gotten a hold of a Good Guy doll and is trying to sell it. She buys it and gives it to Andy. The doll appears normal and refers to itself as "Chucky". That night, Karen's best friend Maggie watches over Andy while Karen works late. After Andy's bedtime, Maggie finds Chucky sitting in front of a television tuned to a late-night newscast about Ray's death. She is then attacked by Chucky, being hit in the head with a hammer and falling out of the window to her death. Police search the apartment and Norris considers Andy a suspect, despite Karen's protests. Andy claims that Chucky killed Maggie and says that Chucky told him that his real name was "Charles Lee Ray".The next morning, Chucky orders Andy to skip school and take a train downtown. While Andy is distracted, Chucky sneaks into the home of his former accomplice, Eddie Caputo, and kills him by causing a gas explosion. Andy is again considered a suspect and is admitted to a psychiatric hospital after claiming Chucky is the culprit. Karen returns home with Chucky and discovers batteries are still in the doll's box; the doll has been moving and speaking without them. Frightened, Karen lights her fireplace and threatens to burn Chucky, who violently comes alive in her arms and attacks her before escaping. Karen goes to the police and explains what happened; Norris doesn't believe her.Prefer the podcast version? Hear what it takes to get accepted to USC Gould School of Law [Show Summary] USC Gould's Associate Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, David Kirschner, shares how students can get accepted to this top-ranked law school. Interview with David Kirschner, Associate Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at USC Gould [Show Notes] Thanks for joining me for the 456th episode of Admissions Straight Talk. Are you applying to law school this cycle? Are you planning ahead to apply to law school next year or later? Are you competitive at your target program? Accepted's Law School Admissions Quiz can give you a quick reality check. Just go to accepted.com/law-quiz and complete the quiz. You'll not only get an assessment, but also tips on how to improve your chances of acceptance. Plus it's all free. For today's interview, I'm delighted to have on Admissions Straight Talk, David Kirschner, Associate Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at USC Gould School of Law. Dean Kirschner earned his undergrad degree at USC in Political Science and Film-Production. He then earned his JD at California Western School of Law. He has been in law school admissions since 2006 when he joined Loyola Law as Associate Dean of Admissions. In 2011, he became Director of Admissions at USC Gould, and in 2016, he became USC Gould's Associate Dean and Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid. Can you give us an overview of the more distinctive elements of the USC Gould JD program? [2:06] Certainly. I think one of the elements that certainly differentiates us a little bit from some of our peer schools is our small size. At beneath 200 students, at least that's our goal each year to bring in a first-year class of no more than 200 students, it lends itself to a very collegial and collaborative learning environment where students, not only get to know their faculty members well, but they also get to know one another very well and support one another. I think that small size is a great facet of a Gould education. I like to say small size does not mean small opportunity. As a relatively small law school, we're set in the heart of a major top-tier research university that sits at the heart of kind of the de facto and default capital of the Pacific Rim, which is Los Angeles. There's no shortage of opportunity. There's no shortage of individuals to learn from. Not only do we have a great full-time tenured faculty, but we're also able to draw from a pool of incredibly talented practitioners in Los Angeles who serve as adjunct faculty, and teach some of the more niche style upper-division courses. Students not only have the ability to learn from experts in their fields who publish in research and present, but then also learn particular areas from practitioners who are doing things every day. I really think it's that combination of small class size, a collegial and collaborative environment with all of the resources that a university like USC offers, as well as a world-class city like Los Angeles. In preparing for the call, I saw that the first year is a very much standard curriculum and the second two years are entirely elective. Is that right? [3:53] That's quite accurate. In the second and third years, there are a few requirements. There's an upper-division writing requirement and there are certain classes where the material is tested frequently on the bar that students choose to take but those bar classes are not required. There's tremendous, tremendous flexibility in the upper-division. How has COVID affected the curriculum and experience at USC Law, and what do you think is going to stick? [4:29] It has impacted things in so many ways. I think one of the lasting impacts will be flexibility. I don't necessarily see any significant short-term impacts on the curriculum. As you probably know, and as some listeners may know, legal education has looked remarkably similar for quite a long time. Of course,

Joey Gabe and Chris talk.. Child's Play 3 is a 1991 American slasher film and the third installment in the Child's Play film series. The film is written by Don Mancini and directed by Jack Bender, with Brad Dourif returning as the voice of Chucky. Although released only nine months after Child's Play 2, the story takes place eight years following the events of that film, and one month before the events of Bride of Chucky (which was made seven years later). It was executive-produced by David Kirschner, who produced the first two Child's Play films.
Tom Bruno and David Rabe speak to true pop culture creative genius, David Kirschner. You will be blown away by the achievements of this man who (for example) simply wrote Hocus Pocus for his daughter. The movie was slammed by critics originally and then went on to be the huge success we all know today and it DOESN'T STOP THERE. David wrote "An American Tale" and then sold it to Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy with an elevator pitch at an elaborate Hollywood party. We haven't even spoke about Child's Play or the fact that David co-owns Curious frickin' George!! David is a top bloke. This is a great episode, full of lots of inside Hollywood info and I'm sure you are going to love it. If so, please give this a share!!

Though it starred Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy, it was pretty much considered a flop at the time. Since then, many audiences have discovered the film, and it can be found on cable, playing pretty much non-stop in October. It truly is a cult favorite now! Partly filmed around Salem in New England, partly filmed on a sound stage, it was directed by Kenny Ortega. Our guest for this episode, David Kirschner, was one of the film's producers, but was also the creator and writer of the story. He pitched the whole idea. Wait till you hear how the whole thing came about. And the new sequel we're dying to hear about? He's executive producer. Even if you haven't seen Hocus Pocus, you know David's work, if you've seen a Chucky doll or seen Child's Play. He began his career working with Jim Henson's Muppets and Sesame Street. He wrote and illustrated the series of children's books known as Rose Petal Place. Child's Play is a 1988 American supernatural slasher film directed and co-written by Tom Holland, and produced by David Kirschner from a story by Don Mancini. It is the first film in the Child's Play series and the first installment to feature the character Chucky. It stars Brad Dourif, Catherine Hicks, Chris Sarandon, Alex Vincent and Dinah Manoff. Hicks plays a widowed mother who gives a doll to her son played by Vincent, unaware that the doll is possessed by the soul of a serial killer played by Dourif. Child's Play was released in the United States on November 9, 1988, by MGM/UA Communications Co. It grossed more than $44 million against a production budget of $9 million. Along with the film gaining a cult following, the box office success spawned a media franchise that includes a series of six sequels, merchandise, comic books, and a reboot film of the same name released in the summer of 2019. Child's Play was distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer,[9] although the rights to the series were sold to Universal Pictures in 1990, right before production on Child's Play 2 started. MGM retained the rights to the first film and as such, distributed the 2019 reboot. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Episode 230: The Crew's reviewing the direct to video Child's Play sequels, Curse of Chucky and Cult of Chucky. Franchise creator, Don Mancini wrote and directed both of these sequels. And he brought the horror back to the series while keeping some of the comedy. Fiona Dourif stars in both films and kills it. She's great and the daughter of Chucky star Brad Dourif. Alex Vincent (Andy) is back after being absent since Child's Play 2. The Crew discusses. If you like our music intro, head over to Soundcloud and hear more amazing music from aquariusweapon. Episode 228: The Crew's hanging out with the Chucky family while watching Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky. Bride was released two years after Scream, and the film is obviously inspired by Scream's success. And it worked; as Bride is the highest grossing entry of the franchise. And Jennifer Tilly is a welcomed addition to the cast. Seed of Chucky is the first film directed by Don Mancini, who wrote all the Child's Play films. Seed of Chucky is a wild ride. Episode 227: The Crew's running from a killer “My Buddy” doll while watching Tom Holland's Child's Play. The film was a hit during it's theatrical run, and started a franchise that's been running for 4 decades. The sequels do get silly, but this first installment is genuinely suspenseful. The effects and puppet work (from Kevin Yagher) still hold up today, without the use of CGI. The Crew discusses...

A solid project with Stephen King himself excited and giving his full support, the undated project will be directed by Josh Boone with primary writing by Boone and Ben Cavell.
