This week we go railside, and explore the fascinating world of trains around Michigan. What we found was a dedicated, passionate group of people, some incredible machinery, lots of history, and one new restaurant. We first meet Kyle Rosol, the general manager of the Friends of the Coopersville-Marne Railway, which is located just due west of Grand Rapids, about halfway to Grand Haven. His life-long passion for trains and railroads led him across town from Lowell to this dream job. The vintage train resides in Coopersville and travels a dedicated 7-mile track to Marne that was originally built in 1858. The historic cars do a 90-minute loop and a relaxing pace. The extra cool thing about this train is that each voyage out follows some type of theme, many of them seasonal. Check out Rails and Ales, and enjoy a craft beer or wine and an appetizer as you travel, or do the Summer Train and learn about the history of the area. The most popular are the fall Pumpkin Train and Holiday Train in December, please plan ahead for these.  Also, reserve ahead of time, and do not miss the Great Train Robbery, which Kyle shared with us. All we'll say is that bandits takeover and a certain someone has to arrive by horseback to save the day, which sounds pretty exciting to us.Owosso, a charming little town located a bit northeast of Lansing, has always been a favorite of ours after spending some time here eating the best fried chicken we ever had at our beloved Lula's Louisiana Kitchen, which has sadly since closed by fire. Taking a walk through downtown offers cute shops, bakeries to pop into, an absolutely lovely green park, and one colossal piece of American engineering. The Steam Railroading Institute in Owosso is home to the mighty Pere Marquette 1225 engine, which pulls the famous North Pole Express, a seasonal and extremely popular excursion based on a famous movie during the holiday season. This four-and-a-half-hour trip includes cocoa, and a visit to the Ashley Christmas Village, as well as a festive train ride.  Situated on the site of the former Ann Arbor Railroad's steam shops and roundhouse in Owosso, SRI's mission is to educate the public about steam-era railroading in Michigan and the Great Lakes region. From individuals to large groups of school children, SRI is open to the public on select days from April to September for visits and tours. You can also book private charters, ride the 7.5 gauge mini-railroad, and experience other special train events.Matthew Buskard has been a long-time friend and restaurant colleague of Amy's from way, way back. It's always a very proud moment to have this restaurant empire owner on the show, knowing how hard he has worked to get here, with multiple locations of his Bobcat Bonnie's popping up all over the state. His most recent spot just opened in the Lansing Train Station, which was formerly the home of Clara's. Matty Cakes tells us about the care they took in this renovation, maintaining many historical parts while consciously updating, which sounds kind of Goop-y but is decidedly not. He also gives us an update on the huge Michigan Central Station rebuild in Corktown by Ford, which sounds incredibly exciting for everyone, including his original location of Bobcat Bonnie's.Andrew Kercher, Community Engagement Manager and Historian for the Port Huron Museums, is another favorite guest, because his passion is just so apparent, and he makes learning effortless and fun. The museum family in Port Huron encompasses multiple locations, including the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse, Carnegie Museum, the Huron Lightship, and the Edison Depot. That last one is our focus on this show, where Kercher shares with us Thomas Edison's childhood in Port Huron and the importance of trains to this young entrepreneur. Plan a visit to this interesting spot this summer to experience history firsthand. Follow John and Amy:https://www.amyandgonzo.com/Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/behindthemittenTwitter at @BehindTheMittenInstagram at @BehindTheMitten

Del Shannon was born Charles Westover in Grand Rapids, and grew up in Coopersville, Michigan. He launched his career at the HiLo Club in Battle Creek, Michigan where he performed the hit song 'Runaway' for the first time. Today we're broadcasting live from the Lynden Sports Center in Coopersville as they're celebrating their "Summer Sales Event." Throughout the show we talked about last night's NBA Draft and the great picks that were made by the Detroit Pistons. We started the show talking about one of Pistons picks - Jaden Ivey with our friend Gary Dolphin who is the voice of Iowa basketball. He and Huge discussed the type of player Jaden is, what he will bring to the team, and more. We then moved on to talk about some of the Michigan players that were picked up last night. Anthony Broome from theWolverine.com joined Huge to talk about Moussa Diabate and Caleb Houstan getting drafted last night. We wrapped up the hour with one of Lynden Sports Center's most loyal customers, John Evans. John owns and runs Bethesda Farms in Jenison and he helps give back to others so he filled us in on how Lynden Sports Center has helped him do that. We started the second hour talking more about the Pistons and the Draft last night as Keith Langlois from Pistons.com joined us. He and Huge broke down everything that happened last night for the Pistons, looked ahead to the future, and more. We were then joined by Tim Staudt from Staudt on Sports in Lansing to talk about Max Christie being drafted last night. He also gave us his thoughts on the impact the players the Pistons picked up will have. We wrapped up the hour Charles VandenBerg from Lynden Sports Center telling us about some of the great things they have to offer this weekend. We were joined by our friend Ant Wright from the Full Ride Network to start off our final hour. He gave us his thoughts on who the Pistons picked up, talked up what they still need, and more. We were then joined by George David who is the Assistant GM for our Detroit Pistons. He came on with Huge to give us his insight on the players we got last night, what's next for this Pistons team, and to talk about how Troy Weaver has been building this team back up. We wrapped up the show with Gary Schumacher from Mahindra Tractors as they're celebrating the opening of their new dealership at the Lynden Sports Center. In this episode, I interview James Popenhagen from the Del Shannon Show, a tribute organization to the music legend. He was born Charles Weedon Westover in Grand Rapids, and grew up in Coopersville. However, he adopted the name Del Shannon as his stage name at the beginning of his music career in Battle Creek, Michigan. In this interview Mr. Popenhagen, a personal friend of Del Shannon, talks candidly about his early career, the challenges of show business and his rise to stardom. Del Shannon was also a huge star in England and Europe, having many bands that would later become famous in the U.S. open for him when he toured, including the Beatles. It is a fascinating history, and we also discuss future plans for a Del Shannon exhibit in the local Battle Creek Regional History Museum in Battle Creek, and other tribute music events. There she meets the curly-headed cutie with the beautiful eyes who works at the Pizza Shack, Luke. It seems like the perfect love story is unfolding for Sutton and Luke but what will happen at the end of the summer? When tragedy strikes Sutton is faced with the harsh reality that Luke may not actually be who she thinks he is. Has Sutton been living a lie? Are her and Luke meant to be? She'll do everything she can to find out. “One on One” by Mike Kelso - Corrections Officer Emil Sorn believed the inmates at Larsan State Prison were coddled by the system, had too many rights, and never received any real punishment for their crimes. As sergeant in charge of the evening shift, disrespect or disobedience in any form was dealt with swiftly, severely, and quietly. The idea started in a bar after a couple of drinks, and like most ideas so conceived, it should've stayed there. If the accused is granted the right to face their accuser, then the victim should have the right to confront the perpetrator. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, a life for a life. There is a fine line between Justice and Revenge. Emil Sorn is about to cross it. “TRAS - The Real Adult Superstore” by JM Ricketts - Welcome to The Real Adult Superstore, where it only takes one visit to change your life forever. Are you brave enough to enter? Bill's been a loyal and caring husband to his wife Shelly for nearly thirty years. However. like most men, he's useless when it comes to choosing gifts, and since he bought her pans for Christmas two years ago, their loving marriage has dwindled. It's now Shelly's upcoming fiftieth birthday and seeing as he's dreading making such a big mistake again, he dreams of giving her something special for it. So he decides to ask her for a clue as to what she'd really like. However, when he gets her response. “Surprise me and use your imagination,” his dreams turn into a nightmare when his choice of gifts lead him to get on the wrong side of a sadistic sexual cult, and he finds himself having to do what no-one else has been able to do, and beat their version of the ‘Wheel of Fortune game' to live, but if he does, he'll walk away with sixty-four million dollars in prize money.

Molly Danger is a super powered 10-year-old-alien girl who protects the city of Coopersville, New York from an army of villains called The Supermechs. Although Molly is an internationally famous super heroine, she is incredibly lonely and isolated from the public by D.A.R.T. (Danger’s Action Response Team) command. Forbidden from having personal contact, she has no friends, no family, and no life outside of being a hero; that is until she meets D.A.R.T. pilot and new partner Austin Briggs and befriends his stepson Brian Hammond.   The ongoing series picks up nine months since the end of Molly's Book One with Molly continuing to break D.A.R.T. protocols as she begins to question what is and what is not real! Jamal also serves as the Vice President of Marketing for Action Lab Entertainment and he fills us in on what to expect from Action Lab in the near future. And if all that weren't enough Jamal also discusses with us his early work in comics, his two year stint on Supergirl, the return of his Venture project with writer Jay Faerber and much more!! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mollydanger/molly-danger-the-ongoing-series http://www.jamaligle.com/ http://www.actionlabcomics.com/

On this week's Talking Michigan Politics podcast, Jeff and Ed discuss: 1. Gov's race. New polls show U.S. Rep. Peter Hoekstra maintaining a lead on the Republican side, with Mike Cox slipping and Mike Bouchard now at 5 percent. On the other side, as Politics Daily put it, "some other candidate" leads the three Democrats in the Rasmussen Reports poll March 24. "It's pathetic we don't have a candidate," Robert Kolt, a Democratic-leaning public relations consultant, told the Detroit News. "We have nobody with any marquee name value." But Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero, who drew 8 percent to House Speaker Andy Dillon's 12, says he, too, is a nerd. Another Dem, state Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith notched 10 percent. Still, Dems continue not to inspire, meaning, Jeff posits, that independents will vote in the GOP primary, which would be a good thing for Rick Snyder. 2. Anonymous commenting online The issue was brought to the forefront by a recent situation at cleveland.com. 3. Poll: Dems bear more blame for threats A new poll finds the public casts blame on both sides for threats of violence toward members of Congress following the health care bill vote, though slightly more blame "political maneuvers" by Democratic lawmakers: • 49 percent said controversial political maneuvers by Democratic leaders to win passage of the measure was the major reason for the angry fallout. • 25 percent said this was a minor reason. • 22 percent said these were not a factor at all. • 46 percent pointed the finger at harsh criticism of the health care measure from conservative commentators on radio and television. • 26 percent considered this a minor reason. • 23 percent said it was not a cause. • 43 percent said harsh criticism of the measure from Republican leaders was a major cause. • 29 percent said it was a minor cause and 23 percent said it was not a reason at all. Independents spread the blame around more evenly: • 50 percent citing the maneuvers of Democratic leaders • 44 percent the criticism from conservative commentators • 40 percent the rhetoric of Republican leaders. Conversation starters: • Jeff on a New York Magazine story that suggested women should run Wall Street. • Ed's conversation starter is the Grand Rapids Press winning a lawsuit to force the Coopersville school district to disclose how much they paid to victims in a 2007 JV baseball hazing case.
