Stephen Murphy worked his up way from his start as a police officer in a small West Virginia town to the Deputy Assistant Administrator of the DEA. During his 37 years in law enforcement Steve was stationed all around the world, most notably as one of the two Americans present and involved in the hunt for the largest cocaine distributor in the world, Pablo Escobar. The history of science is punctuated by moments of technological innovation that produce a paradigm shift and a subsequent flurry of discovery. A recent technological innovation that generated diverse discoveries, ranging from a profound shift in our understanding of the origin of humanity to a seismic change in the criminal justice system, is the polymerase chain reaction, or PCR. With us to discuss the history of PCR is one of its innovators, Henry Erlich. As Director of the Human Genetics Department at Cetus Corporation and later as Director of Human Genetics and Vice President of Exploratory Research at Roche Molecular Systems, Henry led developments in diagnostic applications for infectious and autoimmune diseases, forensic genetics, and organ transplantation. His laboratory performed the first forensic DNA case in the United States in 1986 and the first DNA-based post-conviction exoneration. Henry has published over 450 journal articles and three books, which include PCR Technology: Principles and Applications for DNA Amplification, Silent Witness: Forensic DNA Analysis in Criminal Investigations and Humanitarian Disasters, and Genetic Reconstruction of the Past: DNA Analysis in Forensics and Human Evolution. Henry has received numerous awards, including the Association for Molecular Pathology Award for Excellence (2000) and the Profiles in DNA Courage Award (National Institute of Justice, 2005).

Beyond impaired driving, Goz delved into the comprehensive structure of the Frederick County Sheriff's Office, revealing an intricate web of divisions, including Criminal Investigations, Civil Process, School Safety, Administrative, and Special Operations. Each division plays a pivotal role in maintaining public safety, from serving eviction notices to running SWAT and search-and-rescue operations. Janet highlighted the community's frequent interactions with law enforcement, often through traffic stops or emergency calls. Goz addressed the perception of law enforcement, stressing the importance of understanding the broader scope of their duties and responsibilities. Special attention was given to the importance of teamwork between law enforcement and prosecutors. Goz detailed how officers must gather evidence meticulously to aid in the successful prosecution of cases, likening it to a well-coordinated effort between waitstaff and chefs in a restaurant. As the conversation drew to a close, Janet and Goz touched on the everyday challenges and triumphs faced by law enforcement officers. Goz reflected on his career with a mix of humility and pride, reaffirming his commitment to public safety and the continuous fight against impaired driving. On the early morning of June 27, 1995, 27-year-old Jodi Huisentruit, a news anchor in Mason City, Iowa, overslept and rushed out the door to head to work. But she never made it in. Concerned coworkers called the police, who found Jodi's red Mazda Miata in her apartment's parking lot. Evidence at the scene suggested a struggle, leading police to believe Jodi had been abducted as she tried to get into her car. In the days that followed, search teams scoured Mason City and beyond, but no trace of Jodi was ever found. It's been more than 29 years since Jodi disappeared, and investigators are still searching for answers… Jodi Huisentruit was last heard from in the early hours of June 27, 1995. At around 4:00 am, her producer called to wake her up after she had overslept, and Jodi said she would be on her way to the station. However, she never arrived.  By 7:15 am, police had been called to her apartment complex at 550 N Kentucky Avenue in Mason City, where they found signs of a struggle near her red Mazda Miata. Her belongings were scattered in the parking lot, but Jodi was nowhere to be found. When police canvassed the area, they learned that a white van, possibly a mid-1980s Ford Econoline, was seen in the parking lot at around 4:30 am. It has never been located.  Jodi is a white woman with brown eyes, standing at approximately 5'3". At the time of her disappearance, she weighed between 110 and 120 pounds and had blonde hair.
