“The culture wars have completely eaten America,” says author Isaac Butler. His new book, ‘The Perfect Moment: God, Sex, Art, and the Birth of America's Culture Wars,' looks at how the religious right made a template for expressing grievance over art, and how that is used to this day to defund the National Endowment of the Arts. Butler spoke with Terry Gross. Subscribe to our free weekly newsletter Follow us on Instagram Subscribe to our YouTube channel Check out the Fresh Air ArchivesSee pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for sponsorship and to manage your podcast sponsorship preferences.NPR Privacy Policy

STARMER GONE! BURNHAM CORONATION ? GENERAL ELECTION NOW!  #JonGaunt #JonGauntTV #Live #KeirStarmer #AndyBurnham #LabourLeadership #GeneralElection #UKPolitics #ReformUK #NigelFarage  Keir Starmer has gone. But does that mean the British people should simply accept Andy Burnham being handed the keys to Number 10?  Jon Gaunt asks the question many voters are already asking: where is the democracy in all of this? Millions voted in a General Election based on Labour's manifesto and Keir Starmer's promises. If Labour now chooses a new leader with a completely different agenda, should the country simply accept it? Should Andy Burnham automatically become Prime Minister without a public vote? Or is it time for a fresh General Election so the British people can decide who governs the country?  We'll discuss: ✅ Starmer's departure ✅ The prospect of a Burnham leadership ✅ Whether Labour still has a mandate ✅ Reform UK's chances ✅ Nigel Farage's next move ✅ The future of Britain  Join Jon Gaunt  and tell us what YOU think. In April 1989, a newspaper clipping about an art exhibit landed in the mailbox of the Rev. Donald Wildmon, the founder of a conservative evangelical group, the American Family Association. Partly funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the exhibit included a now-infamous photograph by Andres Serrano that showed a crucifix submerged in Serrano's own urine. Incensed, Wildmon sent a copy of the photo to every member of Congress, setting off a battle led by the Christian right over what contemporary art could be and who should receive federal funding for it. Isaac Butler, an author and cultural historian, walks through this and other pivotal moments in the culture wars of the 1980s and 1990s in his new book, “The Perfect Moment: God, Sex, Art and the Birth of America's Culture Wars.” Butler spoke to the Book Review's editor, Gilbert Cruz, about how these fights unfolded and what they meant for the artists themselves. He sat down to write the book, he said, when “it really felt like the culture wars of the '80s and '90s that I grew up in were repeating again.” Books and plays discussed on this episode: “The Perfect Moment: God, Sex, Art and the Birth of America's Culture Wars,” by Isaac Butler “Measure for Measure,” by William Shakespeare “Transgressions: The Offences of Art,” by Anthony Julius “It Was Vulgar and It Was Beautiful: How AIDS Activists Used Art to Fight a Pandemic,” by Jack Lowery “The Devil Finds Work,” by James Baldwin “Fire in the Belly: The Life and Times of David Wojnarowicz,” by Cynthia Carr “Elia Kazan: A Life,” by Elia Kazan “Fear No Pharaoh: American Jews, the Civil War and the Fight to End Slavery,” by Richard Kreitner “The Kindness of Strangers,” by Salka Viertel “The Talmud: A Biography,” by Barry Scott Wimpfheimer “My Last Sigh,” by Luis Buñuel Listen to and Follow ‘The Book Review' Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Amazon Music | YouTube | iHeartRadio Unlock full access to New York Times podcasts, and explore everything from politics to pop culture. STARMER IS FINISHED: BUT Is ANDY BURNHAM The Answer? #JonGaunt #JonGauntTV #Live #KeirStarmer #AndyBurnham #Labour #GeneralElection #UKPolitics #NigelFarage #ReformUK Keir Starmer's authority is under intense pressure. Polls are bleak, Labour MPs are restless, and rumours of a leadership challenge refuse to go away. But if Starmer falls, is replacing him with Andy Burnham really the answer? Tonight, Jon Gaunt asks a simple question: who actually voted for Andy Burnham to become Prime Minister? Millions of people voted in the last General Election based on Labour's manifesto and on the promises made by Keir Starmer. If Labour simply swaps leaders without returning to the country, is that democratic? Or is it another example of Westminster politicians deciding they know better than the voters? We'll debate whether the real issue is not Starmer himself, but the direction of the Labour Party. Has Labour abandoned the promises it made to the British people? Has it drifted away from the concerns of ordinary voters on immigration, crime, free speech and the cost of living?  And what would Andy Burnham actually do differently? Would he tackle concerns about unequal policing and justice? Would he recognise the growing public perception that some laws are enforced differently depending on who is protesting, who is speaking, or what cause is being promoted? Or would it simply be more of the same under a different face? If Starmer is finished, should the British people be given the final say through a General Election? Join Jon Gaunt  as we debate whether changing the captain can save the ship—or whether Britain needs a completely new course. Do you think Starmer is finished? Would Andy Burnham be any better? Or is it time for a General Election? Get involved in the live chat and have your say. The drowning, deluded loser! #JonGaunt #Starmer #UKPolitics #NetZero #ArmedForces #TroopingTheColour #NationalSecurity #TwoTierBritain #LionsLedByDonkeys  Is Keir Starmer becoming a tragic figure, or is he just a tragicomic clown? Today, we dive into the fallout from his latest statement—clinging to office while claiming he won't leave the UK in chaos. The irony? Many would argue the chaos is already here, and he's the one at the helm. In this live show, we're talking about the "lions led by donkeys." We all saw the incredible pride of our armed forces at Trooping the Colour today, yet we face the hard reality: our real defence forces are being hollowed out. How can we justify committing billions to Net Zero while we can't adequately fund the men and women who keep us safe? It's time for a reality check. Is Starmer truly deluded, or is there a more calculated "controlled demolition" of our national interests at play? JOIN THE CONVERSATION TODAY. Is Starmer a "tragicomic clown" or a genuine threat to national security? Should we be prioritising Net Zero over our armed forces? "Lions led by donkeys"—is this the most accurate description of modern Britain? What do you think? Leave a comment below or join the live chat. Starmer's Belfast Blame Game: Why Elite Fear TRUTH About Immigration?  #JonGaunt #Starmer #BelfastRiots #Immigration #Farage #TwoTierBritain #ECHR #UKPolitics #JohnHealey  The streets of Belfast are on fire, and the political class is hiding behind a smokescreen. Why is Keir Starmer more interested in policing Elon Musk's and Nigel Farage's language than addressing the massive elephant in the room: unvetted mass immigration and the total breakdown of our borders?  In today's show, Jon Gaunt exposes the staggering disconnect between the Westminster elite and the real people of this country. While the "Establishment" obsesses over "tone" and "narrative," they are ignoring the root causes of the riots and the legitimate concerns of patriots who feel like strangers in their own land. Is this the definition of a "Two-Tier" Britain? Why are the concerns of the native population labeled "far-right" while the causes of unrest are swept under the rug? How the political class uses Farage as a tactical distraction to avoid their own failures. The truth about the Belfast riots that the BBC and Sky News won't tell you. The "House of Rot" in Westminster has abandoned the working class. It's time for a factory reset.  Have your say! Are Starmer and the political class totally out of touch, or is this a deliberate attempt to silence dissent? Why does a rainbow flag generate so much controversy? Is the outrage genuine, or is it being manufactured by politicians, media personalities, and culture-war influencers looking for the next fight? This week, Karel and Scott Jacobsen of The Good Men Project examine the growing backlash against Pride visibility and what it says about LGBTQ rights in 2026. Also on this episode:

Outrage Is America's Favorite Addiction A simple Pride Month post from HelloFresh sparked outrage, boycotts, angry comments, and endless social media debates. But the real story isn't HelloFresh. It's why so many people seem permanently angry about everything. Why does a Pride post generate thousands of comments demanding a “Straight Pride Month”? Why are immigrants, LGBTQ people, trans people, teachers, homeless people, and other vulnerable groups constantly blamed for problems they didn't create? Somewhere along the way, outrage became an industry. Politicians profit from it. Media outlets profit from it. Influencers profit from it. Entire movements are built around convincing people that someone else is responsible for their frustrations. From Pride Month backlash to election conspiracies to culture-war outrage, we're living in an era where anger often replaces understanding and blame replaces accountability. In this episode, Karel examines the growing culture of grievance, victimhood politics, and why some people seem determined to stay angry no matter what issue dominates the headlines. A

The HelloFresh Controversy Reveals A Bigger Problem A Pride Month social media post from HelloFresh has sparked outrage, backlash, boycotts, and endless debate. Was it a bad joke? Probably. But the reaction to it may reveal something much bigger about where we are as a society in 2026. After spending 30 minutes discussing the controversy on GB News in the UK, one thing became clear: the conversation isn't really about HelloFresh. It's about LGBTQ visibility, Pride Month, and why so many people are still uncomfortable when queer people are included in mainstream culture. Meanwhile, Elon Musk and Donald Trump continue to push claims and conspiracies that dominate headlines. But are Americans still listening? Why is every election called “rigged” when one side loses and “fair” when the other side wins? And a new poll raises a troubling question: Is American exceptionalism fading? Fewer Americans than ever believe the United States stands above the rest of the world. What happened to the confidence that once defined the country, and what does it say about our future? In this episode, Karel connects the dots between culture wars, political outrage, conspiracy thinking, and a changing America struggling to define itself.

DESCRIPTION A fiery broadcast takes aim at a rising wave of political controversy, with allegations, counterclaims, and cultural flashpoints dominating the conversation. The discussion centers on a Texas political figure, Rep. James Talarico, and a series of online claims and past statements that have resurfaced and sparked intense debate. The episode also touches on broader accusations of political messaging, campaign distractions, and escalating rhetoric in an already polarized environment. PODCAST SUMMARY This episode opens with sharply critical commentary directed at multiple political figures and campaigns, focusing heavily on resurfaced social media activity, podcast appearances, and campaign controversies. A major segment centers on Texas Democratic lawmaker James Talarico, with the host referencing past interviews and online posts that have drawn criticism and renewed attention on social platforms. The commentary frames these statements as part of a broader debate over cultural and political messaging, particularly involving topics related to gender identity and education. The broadcast also alleges that recent personal revelations involving a political candidate's private life are being used as a distraction from other controversies. These claims are presented as part of a larger narrative about media strategy and campaign optics, with the host suggesting coordinated messaging tactics among political operatives. In addition, the episode broadens into a wider critique of partisan politics, accusing opposing figures of extreme ideological positions and raising concerns about what the host describes as troubling trends in political discourse. These remarks are presented in highly charged language and reflect the polarized tone of the discussion. Toward the end, the conversation teases upcoming segments involving international news and alleged incidents in Europe, suggesting a broader thematic focus on perceived political and cultural decline. KEY TAKEAWAYS Heated commentary targets Texas Rep. James Talarico over resurfaced statements and interviews Claims are made that political messaging is being used strategically to distract from personal scandals The episode reflects escalating rhetoric and deep polarization in political talk media Broader cultural and ideological disputes are framed as central to current political tensions Teasers suggest future segments will expand into international and domestic controversy coverage SOUND BITES “This guy can't stop talking about the same issues over and over again.” “It's all about distraction tactics and shifting attention away from the real story.” “We are watching the political temperature rise every single day.” “The audience deserves to understand what's really being said and why it matters.” SEO KEYWORDS Texas politics, James Talarico, political controversy, podcast commentary, campaign scandal, political rhetoric, culture war politics, US politics news, social media controversy, political analysis podcast, partisan media, election narrative CLICKABLE SOCIAL TITLE SHOCKING Claims Rock Political Conversation as Firestorm Erupts
