The Highlighter Article Club
#503: ”This is really too important to be turned into a culture war issue“

The Highlighter Article Club

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 17, 2025 29:34

Hi Loyal Readers. Thank you for opening this week's issue of Article Club.Today's issue is dedicated to my interview with Gideon Lewis-Kraus, author of this month's featured article, “The End of Children.” I hope you read the article and take a listen to the interview.Yes: This article is about the imminent worldwide population implosion — in other words, how by the end of this century, we're going to start losing people, and fast, and how the human race might inevitably go extinct sooner rather than later. And yes: I was surprised when I found myself interested in this topic. After all, before reading this piece, I would have said two things: (1) Um, isn't climate change what we should be worrying about? and (2) Doesn't this inexorably lead to “childless cat ladies” and The Handmaid's Tale? But let me tell you: The magic of Mr. Lewis-Kraus's writing and reporting, alongside the spirit of Article Club — which encourages us to build our empathy — got me to rethink my perspective on the plummeting human fertility rate. And this was all before getting to talk to the author himself. As you know, one of my favorite things about Article Club is that writers generously say yes to talking with us. The same was true with Mr. Lewis-Kraus. Here's a photo of him, so you know what he looks like, and then I'll write a bit about what I appreciated about our interview. It was wonderful to meet Mr. Lewis-Kraus. More than what's typical in these Article Club interviews, we talked about writing and craft. A significant part of our conversation was about how he structured and organized the piece. His thoughtfulness was apparent right from the beginning of our conversation. I loved learning how he decided to write the story in the first place and why he chose South Korea as his case study of population collapse. Some people told Mr. Lewis-Kraus that South Korea and its 0.7 fertility rate was “played out” and “a cliché,” but nobody from a major magazine had spent time in the country, he said. I was personally grateful that Mr. Lewis-Kraus took significant space in his article reporting from South Korea. If you want to gain a better appreciation of how serious the problem is there, I encourage you to watch this 15-minute video, recommended by loyal reader Peter.I was also impressed with Mr. Lewis-Kraus's awareness of his readers as he drafted the piece. He understood, for example, that his audience (aka subscribers of The New Yorker) are astute readers who mostly lean progressive and who may believe that population decline is a problem only in some countries, like Italy and Japan. Rather than skirting this issue, Mr. Lewis-Kraus decided to tackle it head on:What I realized was, Everyone is going to feel like they've read this story before — like, everyone is going to feel like they've heard this. And so the major thing that I need to do upfront is say to people, essentially directly address the reader, and say, like, You sophisticated reader might think that you know what's going on here, but you don't know what's going on here.Later in our conversation, I asked Mr. Lewis-Kraus how he makes sure not to get ahead of his readers — on the one hand respecting their knowledge, but on the other hand acknowledging that they haven't spent hundreds of hours reporting and thinking about this issue, as he has. I found his answer to be humble. Part of what, what doing this job is, is it's starting knowing nothing about something and then very quickly learning as much as you can — without forgetting what it felt like to know nothing about it.More than anything else, I left this conversation with deep respect of Mr. Lewis-Kraus and his process as a writer. As I've said many times over the years, while I can recognize the highest-quality writing when I read it, I still don't understand how writers are able to pull it off. That's maybe one reason I keep doing this newsletter — so that I can continue to explore this question and share my findings with you. Thank you very much for joining me on this journey. An invitation to our discussion on July 27I warmly invite you to participate in our discussion on Sunday, July 27, 2:00 - 3:30 pm PT. We'll meet on Zoom. You can sign up below, it's free.Thank you for reading and listening to this week's issue. Hope you liked it.

In this fifth episode of Season Two of More Than Politics, host Julie Varner Walsh turns to the problems we face when it comes to today's politics. She describes how she sees these problems as coming from our human tendency to idolize, to become unhealthily attached to things. And in particular, in this episode Julie discusses our tendency to idolize people – both groups and individuals. Julie believes that this idol has lead us into a culture war, and that we vastly underestimate the role this culture war has come to play in our lives.Follow Julie on Instagram and Substack, and subscribe both there and here to support the podcast.Theme music is by www.purple-planet.com

On this episode of the Unsupervised Learning podcast, Razib welcomes back Ethan Strauss, a writer who has covered sports and culture for the past decade, including in the book The Victory Machine: The Making and Unmaking of the Warriors Dynasty. More recently his writing is to be found at his Substack, House of Strauss, which is notable for offering a candid take on the cross-pollination between broader culture and athletics, notably in the piece Nike's End of Men: Why Nike no longer wants us to Be Like Mike. Strauss and Razib first discuss professional sports and the different representation of various nationalities. Strauss recounts the generational attempt by the NBA to get Chinese representation to gin up a lucrative rivalry, and how it sputtered due to the reality that 1.4 billion Han Chinese seem to have less basketball talent than small nations like Croatia. Razib also asks about how and why baseball is popular in parts of Latin America and East Asia, and why there are so many more Dominicans in MLB than Mexicans. Strauss says differences between populations are so obvious in sports there's no need for complex social explanations. Then they explore the role of DEI in professional sports, and especially the NBA, and how it might be impacting decisions in the league. They recall the years around 2020, when a drive for minority representation, and in particular of blacks, was prevalent across the corporate world, and how thatimpacted professional sports. Strauss then offers his theory for why the Dallas Mavericks inexplicably traded away a potentially generational talent, Luka Dončić, and Mark Cuban's role in the choice. Finally, he highlights the racism that Jeremy Lin, one of the few Asian American stars in the 2010's, faced from fellow players.

American Hypocrisy: Why Do We Tolerate These Contradictions? The contradictions in American life are everywhere — and today, we break them down. Why is sex work still taboo when porn is the internet's #1 use? Why are gay adult performers still punished while straight ones get mainstream careers? Why do we spend billions on incarceration but won't invest in housing? Why do we mourn 100 deaths in Texas but ignore daily massacres in Gaza or Ukraine? And why, in a nation of excess, do so many still go hungry? From reality shows like Love Island booting cast members over adult content, to America's obsession with punishment over prevention, today's Karel Cast dives deep into the twisted double standards that define U.S. culture. If you've ever wondered why America seems so upside down — I've got thoughts. Uncensored. Unfiltered. Unhinged. It's The Karel Cast.

Karl Marx in America (University of Chicago Press, 2025), by Andrew Hartman To read Karl Marx is to contemplate a world created by capitalism. People have long viewed the United States as the quintessential anti-Marxist nation, but Marx's ideas have inspired a wide range of people to formulate a more precise sense of the stakes of the American project. Historians have highlighted the imprint made on the United States by Enlightenment thinkers such as Adam Smith, John Locke, and Thomas Paine, but Marx is rarely considered alongside these figures. Yet his ideas are the most relevant today because of capitalism's centrality to American life.In  historian Andrew Hartman argues that even though Karl Marx never visited America, the country has been infused, shaped, and transformed by him. Since the beginning of the Civil War, Marx has been a specter in the American machine. During the Gilded Age, socialists read Marx as an antidote to the unchecked power of corporations. In the Great Depression, communists turned to Marx in hopes of transcending the destructive capitalist economy. The young activists of the 1960s were inspired by Marx as they gathered to protest an overseas war. Marx's influence today is evident, too, as Americans have become increasingly attuned to issues of inequality, labor, and power. After decades of being pushed to the far-left corner of intellectual thought, Marx's ideologies have crossed over into the mainstream and are more alive than ever. Working-class consciousness is on the rise, and, as Marx argued, the future of a capitalist society rests in the hands of the people who work at the point of production. A valuable resource for anyone interested in Marx's influence on American political discourse, Karl Marx in America is a thought-provoking account of the past, present, and future of his philosophies in American society. We cover the controversial first arc of the series which parallels the plans of the Empire with the Final Solution of the Nazi era, as they flood the galaxy with propaganda to demonize a planet they plan to colonize, and how a fascist regime uses sexual violence and unwitting dupes who think they're serving a greater good through their collaboration. And we talk about the upsetting eighth episode of season 2 which depicts a massacre on the “French Planet” of Ghorman, clearly modelled on Nazi-occupied France in World War II, which of course has parallels both to Gaza and the Trump Era.Plus: the fates of the show's ‘Power Couple' Dedra and Syril, the barnburning Saw Gerrara monologue, and Tony Gilroy's illuminating interview with Ross Douthat, who is determined in their discussion to tag Andor (and Michael Clayton) as ‘left wing art' and fails miserably.Over 30% of all Junk Filter episodes are only available to patrons of the podcast. Talk Back to MeThe first six months of 2025 have displayed a roller coaster of events, many of which presented as catastrophes, or great victories depending on political affiliation. At the same time, the Gun Culture has witnessed the end of an era, where names that once led companies and held the attention of millions slip away in disgrace. Not all kingdoms are built to last. Whether it's Military action in Iran, or Riots in LA, or Parliamentarians getting in the way of a long awaited curbing of the NFA, it's easy to look at what we're up against and throw up one's hands in lament. But that is not the path. Did we expect it to be so easy as an election? Did we expect that, with every step forward we would face less and less opposition? This isn't a problem that can be solved in the mind alone. First, she unpacks the targeting of WNBA star Caitlin Clark, claiming she's being punished for refusing to bend to progressive social norms—and for being successful while doing it. From ESPN awkwardness to American flag erasure, Tara argues that patriotism is now a faux pas in liberal-dominated spaces. Then, she shifts to the food industry, revealing how U.S. companies continue to use thousands of chemicals and dyes banned in Europe and Canada. These additives, linked to neurological damage and hormone disruption in children, are quietly set to be phased out—conveniently after the 2026 midterms. Tara warns it's all tied to political lobbying, corporate greed, and the globalist agenda, all while highlighting RFK Jr.'s surprising role in fighting back. Together, these segments paint a picture of a nation being poisoned—culturally and literally—from within.

What do Andy Warhol, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Flannery O'Connor, and Bono all have in common? According to writer and cultural historian Paul Elie, they're “cryptoreligious.” Their art isn't about affirming doctrine—it's about invoking mystery, longing, and spiritual disquiet. In a culture where religious belief is often either rigidly defined or entirely dismissed, these artists dwell in the in between. They don't preach—but they provoke. Their work invites us into important questions, questions to which the artists themselves often don't have answers.   This week, Russell Moore talks with Paul Elie, author of The Life You Save May Be Your Own: An American Pilgrimage—Russell's favorite biography—and the new book The Last Supper: Art, Faith, Sex, and Controversy in the 1980s. Together they explore how religion haunts the work of artists like Dylan (especially his “Christian era”), Cohen (“Hallelujah”), singer Sinéad O'Connor (her unforgettable Saturday Night Live moment), and even Andy Warhol's more-than-15 minutes of fame.   If you've ever felt as if a song lyric or a painting was almost a prayer—or wondered why some of our greatest artists can't seem to stop brushing up against the divine—this conversation is for you.
