Firstly, their spirit of survival, their resilience, their lack of self-pity, the ability usually to laugh in the face of having nothing and to create a kind of sense of flamboyance and life at any cost, despite having you know no resources of any kind that are visible. In this open-line Friday segment, the show dives into the cultural firestorm surrounding Sydney Sweeney's Baskin-Robbins ad — and what the backlash says about beauty standards, cancel culture, and political identity in America today. Tara explores how major brands are pushing back against left-wing cultural dominance and why the reaction to Sweeney's image is about more than just aesthetics. Listeners also join the conversation, including a compelling call from Riley in Chesnee, who makes a heartfelt plea for younger voters to get involved in local politics — especially in critical races like sheriff elections. The episode wraps with practical advice for digital activism, including how to build influence and spread truth on platforms like X. A thought-provoking blend of cultural commentary and grassroots organizing, this episode challenges listeners to reject fear, engage the culture, and take back the narrative — one post, one vote, and one conversation at a time.

Tom and co-host Drew dive deep into the week's most explosive headlines—from Trump's bold moves on the global stage, including nuclear posturing and ultimatums to Russia, to Senator Warren's controversial takes on taxing the rich and the very real repercussions that could have on cities like New York. The conversation pulls no punches, breaking down what happens if billionaires flee, what's truly driving skyrocketing unaffordability, and the alarming collapse of the middle class as shown by a viral marriage-and-homeownership chart. But we don't stop there. You'll hear Tom and Drew tackle wild policy proposals, like calls to abolish the family from the Democratic Socialists of America, and why the culture-versus-politics debate may be the most crucial fight of our era. From threats to free speech in the UK and EU to the chilling implications of mass surveillance, the episode unpacks how global powers manipulate narratives—and why Americans can't take core freedoms for granted. Turning to technology, Tom and Drew geek out on the jaw-dropping pace of AI advancements—from Google's AI-generated 3D worlds to 11Labs' game-changing music tools—and wrestle with the looming asteroid of automation: millions of jobs on the line, and an urgent call for everyone to understand assets and self-reliance. Send us a textI'm honored to welcome Dr. Edward J. Larson to this episode of the podcast. Dr. Larson is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Summer for the Gods: The Scopes Trial and America's Continuing Debate Over Science and Religion, a landmark work that reexamines the 1925 Scopes “Monkey” Trial with fresh insight and scholarly depth. In our conversation, Dr. Larson challenges the familiar narrative popularized by Inherit the Wind, revealing the Scopes Trial as far more than a simple clash between science and religion. It was, in fact, a complex cultural moment shaped by political ambition, regional identity, national media, and the anxieties of a rapidly modernizing society. We explore key figures—Clarence Darrow, William Jennings Bryan, and John Scopes—and their roles in this iconic legal battle. Dr. Larson offers fascinating context around Bryan's progressive credentials, his anti-evolution stance, and his public persona as a speaker and political leader. We also discuss the broader implications of the trial for American legal and educational systems, and how its legacy continues to inform today's debates over religion in public life, science education, and Christian nationalism.Dr. Larson reflects on his personal and academic journey, from his early years to his study from college, to grad school, to law school, and his doctoral dissertation on the history of science. He shares what inspired his deep investigation into the Scopes Trial—ultimately culminating in the Pulitzer Prize in 1998. This episode is both thought-provoking and timely. I invite you to join me for a meaningful conversation that sheds new light on a pivotal moment in American history. These back-to-back segments explore the unraveling of both cultural conformity and political loyalty in America. The first dissects the rise and likely Hollywood fall of actress Sydney Sweeney, whose embrace of Republican values and traditional American imagery has triggered industry backlash—framed as a rebellion against the Human Rights Campaign's corporate social credit system. The second segment zooms in on the GOP's internal conflict, revealing how establishment Republicans, not Democrats, are quietly obstructing Donald Trump's agenda by blocking nominees and protecting federal spending. Together, these discussions expose how cultural and political elites maintain control—and what happens when someone dares to defy them.

In the late twentieth century, artists were on the front lines of the culture wars. Leaders of the Christian Right in the U.S. made a national spectacle out of feminist and queer art, blasting it as sacrilegious or pornographic--and sometimes both. On the bully pulpits of television and talk radio, as well as in the halls of Congress, conservatives denounced artists ranging from Robert Mapplethorpe and Judy Chicago to Marlon Riggs and David Wojnarowicz. Conservatives, alarmed by shifting sex and gender norms, collided with progressive artists who were confronting sexism, homophobia, and racism. In Provoking Religion: Sex, Art, and the Culture Wars (Oxford University Press, 2025), Anthony Petro offers a compelling new history of the culture wars that places competing moralities of gender and sexuality alongside competing visions of the sacred. The modern culture wars, he shows, are best understood not as contests pitting religious conservatives against secular activists, but as a series of ongoing historical struggles to define the relationship between the sacred and the political. Through captivating case studies of "subversive" artists, Provoking Religion illuminates the underside of the culture wars, revealing how progressive artists and activists rendered from those most apparently profane aspects of human life-the stuff of conservatives' worst nightmares--their own haunting visions of the sacred. Anthony M. Petro is Associate Professor in the Department of American Studies at University of Notre Dame (effective fall 2025). His first book, After the Wrath of God: AIDS, Sexuality, and American Religion, was a finalist for the Religion Newswriters Association's book award for nonfiction. In the latest episode of LIT NYC, host Alyssa Katz talks with J. Hoberman about his new opus, Everything Is Now: The 1960s New York Avant-Garde—Primal Happenings, Underground Movies, Radical Pop. “Certainly the cheap rents are essential. And the fact that there were areas of the city, of Manhattan, which had been in a way deserted because various light industries had left and there were spaces that artists were willing to colonize. You know, the original lofts were nothing like these designer lofts that you see. Cold water, some of them didn't have electricity. It required a lot of ingenuity on the part of the artists to even make these places livable, but the fact that you had these places was a stimulus to a community and see that's another thing that I wanted to stress in this book,” Hoberman says, noting that they made art at a time when the government was busting comedians and banning films here. “I guess people can appreciate that there was a time before cell phones, but a lot of the people in this book didn't have telephones at all. That was a luxury that they couldn't afford. So how did they meet? How did they connect? There were bars and cafes that they went to, there were neighborhoods that they lived in, there was a sense of community that the city fostered kind of in its indifference.”

This week on Caught on the Mike, I sit down with Alex Dugan, the magnetic frontman of Culture Wars, to talk about the band's latest single “Lies”—a raw, emotional 90s-tinged alt-rock ballad that's already making waves. We get into the heart of the song's origin—written in the aftermath of heartbreak and betrayal, and shaped by the realization that everything musically was about to change. Inspired by a life-altering New Order concert and years in the making, “Lies” has grown from synth beginnings to a powerful full-band anthem that now closes every Culture Wars show. Alex opens up about the vulnerability behind the lyrics, the band's sonic evolution, and how this track paved the way for everything Culture Wars would become. We also talk about their massive year—touring with Wallows, Keane, and LANY, hitting the top 20 on alt radio, and gearing up for their headline shows in LA and NYC. This is more than just a conversation about a song—it's a conversation about trusting your gut, healing through art, and finding the courage to put it all out there.

July 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of the Scopes Trial – a trial that exposed profound divisions in America over religion, education, and public morality. This was a legal case in Dayton, Tennessee, where high school teacher John Scopes was prosecuted for teaching evolution, violating the state's Butler Act. The Butler Act was a 1925 Tennessee law that prohibited public school teachers from teaching any theory that denied the biblical account of human creation, specifically targeting the teaching of evolution. But believe it or not, this entire trial was orchestrated. Local leaders had the teacher volunteer to be charged as a publicity stunt to boost the town's economy and gain national attention. But it soon gained far more attention than anyone expected, as it touch a nerve on the national clash between an increasingly secular scientific establishment and religious fundamentalists. Battle lines were drawn in the courtroom. Clarence Darrow, a renowned agnostic lawyer and advocate for civil liberties, defended Scopes, while William Jennings Bryan, a prominent Christian populist, three-time presidential candidate, and anti-evolution crusader, prosecuted, highlighting their contrasting worldviews. The trial became a media sensation due to its clash of science versus religion, drawing hundreds of reporters, radio broadcasts, and public fascination with the dramatic courtroom exchanges, particularly Darrow’s cross-examination of Bryan. To discuss the legacy of the case is today’s guest, Brenda Wineapple, author of “Keeping the Faith: God, Democracy, and the Trial that Riveted America.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
