On a September afternoon in 2000, an FBI forensics analyst stood in her lab in Quantico, Virginia, staring into a microscope in confusion. She was looking at two strands of hair that were evidence in a murder investigation. And something wasn't right. She checked the label on the evidence bag the sample came from, then looked back into the microscope. She definitely wasn't imagining it. The label was wrong, which meant that the detective who had packaged the hairs and sent them over for analysis – had not understood what he was looking at. And this wasn't a small mistake. Because if the analyst was right about what the hairs really were – then the whole investigation she was working on was about to change. It's here folks! The 2025 Halloween Extravaganza has arrived. And it is everything we love to do here at Verbal Shenanigans. First, friends of the show, Dom and Harry, join us to compete in a grueling game entitled "Escape from Burlewsferatu". The guys must navigate through 3 nights of Halloween themed questions to avoid being killed by his Lordship, a gross vampire with an aching back, Burlewsferatu! Lot of fun. Listeners be weary! Next, we step into the shadows of Hollywood with this year's Halloween guest, Mark Steger, the actor, performance artist, and choreographer renowned for bringing some of modern horror and sci-fi's most iconic creatures to terrifying life. Steger pulls back the curtain on his unique career, discussing his process for embodying nonhuman characters like the Demogorgon in Netflix's Stranger Things ,the Pale Lady in Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and what it's like working with Tool. A great Halloween episode.

This Halloween marks 10 years of stories from Rod and Steve; to mark the holiday and our tenth anniversary, we're going to take you deep into the dark side of Appalachia with two chilling tales from southwest Virginia. First, Steve tells the story of three strange sisters who ran girls' schools in Murfreesboro and Christiansburg—women whispered to be linked to evil spirits and who eventually faced justice for a terrible crime. Some say their spirits still haunt the ground where their school stood in Christiansburg over a hundred years ago. Then, Rod shares the legend of two cunning sisters from Scott County, whose greed and cruelty led to a savage end. Their ghosts are said to still haunt the cemetery where they were denied burial.Be sure to subscribe for more Stories of Appalachia.Happy Halloween, y'all!

Everyone from a GIF will be live in person at a convention center once we figure out how to rent it. Gore-themed birthday parties go crazy but the ARG is too hard. Dark triad style individuals such as Andrew Milonakis are leaving out poisoned cat poop for the neighborhood dogs to ensure that they never become the Jodie Foster in someone's Taxi Driver fantasy. Arby's meat nuggets are pretty good but later in the bathroom it might be a four-tiki-torcher plus a fire pit and a Febreze cloud that gets ignited. The guy in The Terminal was so lucky until he got turned into CGI and had to drive a Christmas train. China has a skeleton law and Perm is by the Urals.

A carnival blows into a sleepy town, promising to fulfill everyone's desires--but wishes always come with a catch. Can young Will and Jack resist temptation? Can Will's father save them before it's too late? And will the town be free of Mr. Dark and his carnival before the storms come and wipe everything away? Ray Bradbury's dark fantasy of Americana is a little let down in the directing, but Robards and Price's performances ground the battle between good and evil. Starring Jason Robards, Jonathan Price, Dianne Ladd, Pam Grier, Vidal Peterson, and Shawn Carson. Written by Ray Bradbury. Directed by Jack Clayton.
“Their cup of coffee, that delightful delicious cup that's helping them start their day and fuel these wonderful moments with their friends and family, almost certainly has either slavery, child labor, and deforestation in it. How has this industry gotten away with the plastic, with the cups, the milk, the human rights abuses, the deforestation? Scientists tell us this is the 11th hour. We are running out of time.” What would drive someone to take on some of the most powerful industries on Earth? This episode dives deep with Etelle Higonnet, a lawyer turned fearless activist who has dedicated her life to exposing the hidden abuses behind the products we use every day. From cocoa and palm oil to rubber and now coffee, she has fought to rebuild broken systems from the inside out. As the founder of Coffee Watch, Etelle is leading a global effort to transform one of humanity's favorite and most destructive commodities into a model of sustainability and fairness. We explore how she has held corporations accountable, what it takes to create real impact, and why every purchase and every choice matters more than we realize. What we discuss in this episode: The hidden truth behind your daily cup of coffee: what's really going into it and who pays the price. What it would actually cost per cup to ensure your coffee is ethical and environmentally sound. How to find coffee that's sustainably sourced and free of toxic chemicals. The primary drivers of global deforestation. Dark secrets behind chocolate production. What agroforestry is and why it's critical to the planet's future. How climate change affects coffee production. Either way, join Kirk & Rain as they fade into darkness on a dimly lit new episode of Tramtober!Bonus: Soar into the news with us as we discuss the upcoming Soarin' Across America!Listen to full episodes every Windsday and topic-only uploads on Big Thunder Thursdays!InstagramTrammin' - https://instagram.com/TramminPodcastChristian Rainwater - https://instagram.com/imrainwaterMusicLocal Forecast - Elevator Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Trammin' - The Disneylanders, Addy DaddyUsed with permission.Character Art & AnimationNadia Dar - https://nadsdardraws.carrd.co/Trammin.comTrammin' is written without the use of Artificial Intelligence.©Trammin' - A Disneyland Podcast

Happy Halloween! On this week's special spooky episode, Jeff welcomes Julia back to the show to discuss a few frightningly fun topics, starting with Jeff's review of Disneyland's new Happiest Haunts Tour ("The Villains' Trail"), and we look at the new features for this year and compare it with tours in years past. Then, we discuss Ray Bradbury and his relationship with both Walt Disney and the Disney Company, including a closer look at The Halloween Tree, his book that inspired the Halloween Tree in Frontierland. We also dive into "Something Wicked This Way Comes," Bradbury's cult-ish film produced by Walt Disney Productions in 1983 and we look at its inspiration, the story of its production, its genre (horror? Dark fantasy?), and its place in horror story culture. Finally, we give a quick review of Tron: Ares, while wishing it was doing better at the box office.
On the morning of July 11th, 2009, an elderly woman grabbed a coffee and sat down at her kitchen table in Pensacola, Florida, to read the local paper. The news was a big part of her day – she had lived in her neighborhood for 60 years, and liked keeping tabs on everything that was going on in her community. Which was usually a lot – Pensacola and the surrounding county had some of the highest crime rates in Florida. So she wasn't surprised when she opened the paper that morning and saw a police bulletin about a homicide in the area. The message asked residents of Pensacola to be on the lookout for a red van. But when she saw the grainy photo of the vehicle, she gasped and almost knocked over her coffee. Because she'd seen that van. And she knew exactly who it belonged to. Astrophysicists may have spotted evidence for “dark stars,” an unusual type of star that could possibly have existed in the earliest days of the universe, in data from the James Webb Space Telescope. Instead of being powered by nuclear fusion as current stars are, the controversial theory says that these ancient dark stars would have formed by mixing a huge cloud of hydrogen and helium with a type of self-annihilating dark matter. Dark stars would not have been dark—researchers believe that if they existed, they would actually have been bigger and brighter than current stars.Astrophysicists Katherine Freese, who first proposed the idea of dark stars in 2007, and Cosmin Ilie, who detected the possible signs of the dark stars, join Host Ira Flatow to discuss the theory. Guests:Dr. Katherine Freese is a theoretical astrophysicist and a professor of physics at the University of Texas at Austin.Dr. Cosmin Ilie is an assistant professor of physics and astronomy at Colgate University.Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com.
