In this episode of the Celebrate Kids daily podcast, "Facing the Dark," we explore the profound joys and fears of parenting, particularly around helping children discover their true identities as created by God. Dr. Kathy discusses insights from a recent Summit Ministries blog that examines the modern identity crisis, linking it to a historical trend of Western individualism and the questioning of truth. The conversation highlights the importance of understanding how choices are presented to children and the significant impact this has on their self-identity. Tune in as we delve into these critical topics and reflect on the balance between guiding our kids and allowing them to become who they are meant to be.

My guest today is Heather Oden of Sterling, Kansas. Heather is a woman who wears many hats ... She's the executive director of a nonprofit called Light Up the Dark, a worship leader at her church, the wife of a fifth-generation farmer, and the mom of five children.  Today, she joins me to share the story of her son, Jacob.Jacob was an athlete, an encourager, and a young man with a remarkable gift for noticing people who were hurting and speaking life into them. But on August 3, 2016, Jacob and his older brother, JJ, were driving home for lunch when their pickup was struck by a driver under the influence. JJ survived. Jacob did not. In this first half of our conversation, Heather introduces us to Jacob and shares what those early days of grief were like after losing him so suddenly. She talks honestly about the shock, the questions she brought to God, and the unexpected ways God brought comfort in the midst of unimaginable pain. This is a conversation filled with sorrow, certainly, but also with deep faith and the quiet reassurance that God is near to bring light to the darkness.  I believe you'll be blessed by listening in. I would love to hear your thoughts on the show. In this episode, we listen to a pointed expression of discontent, as depicted in Sangam Literary work, Aganaanooru 266, penned by Paranar. The verse is situated amidst gushing new streams of the ‘Marutham’ or ‘Farmlands landscape’ and relays a jilted woman’s feelings. In this colourful trip to the farmlands, as usual, we see sparks fly between a couple, as we listen to the lady say these words to the man, when he returns home, after being in the company of courtesans: “Leaping high up to the banks, amidst the dark and vast spread of those exquisite gushing new floods, akin to a strong and skilful male elephant, holding on to the head of the raft, yesterday, along with those young companions of yours, having thick clusters of tresses, wafting with the scent of bitter orange, adorning yourself with a wet attire and accessories, you played on and on, in those waters, and every time you looked at those exquisite, rain-like eyes of theirs, roving around, with desire brimming over, and passion exceeding its bounds, losing your sense of shame, you frolicked, they say, O lord of the town!  The slander that arose because of this has become louder than the uproar at the festivities in the town of ‘Arimanavayil Urathoor', when copious toddy and ceaseless food were offered in the middle of the day, at a time when the lord of the ancient town, where the music of the lute spreads in the streets, Evvi, who wields an honest sword, ruined and routed the power of those clad in golden ornaments, those who had refused to accept his command! But even the uproar of that slander is not something that brings distress to me. Fearing the resounding beats made by farmers in the field nearby, a peacock, fluttering its wings, takes off to those fear-evoking mountain ranges, and lands in a place called ‘Alaivaai', lit by exquisite lamps, the abode of the battle-worthy Dark-skinned One. It's the memory of the oath that you had taken before this God, which happens to brings that sense of suffering in me!” Let’s listen in to this quarrel and learn more! The lady starts by coming straight to the point and talking about how the news of the man’s activities the previous day had reached her ears already. Apparently, the man had adorned himself with ancient wet-wear and jumped into the gushing new river streams along with maiden he desired, and was romping around, without any sense of shame. The lady goes on to talk about how the uproar of slander in town owing to his activities was louder than the festivities at a place, filled with toddy and much food, called ‘Arimanavayil Urathoor’, after Lord Evvi quelled those wealthy others, who refused to heed to his command. That’s a pretty common comment, made in these situations but the lady follows that up by saying to the man, ‘Even that uproar is not causing me any concern. The only thing that worries me is when I remember the oath you took in front of God Murugan, at ‘Alaivaai’, frequented by peacocks that have arrived thither, after being frightened by the drums of farmers’. What this implies is that during the time of their courtship, the man had taken an oath of being true and loyal to the lady in front of God Murugan, which is now washed away in the flood of that river he played in. The lady means to say to the man, ‘All this slander is nothing but I fear some harm may befall you for you did not keep the promise you made in front of God’. Through that reference of the peacock flying away to God’s mountain, after being frightened by the farmer’s drums, the lady places a metaphor for how the man has come to their home, only because he feared the slander that arose in town and not any true feeling of love within. This will hopefully make the man reflect on his past promises, present aberrations and change his future path. Through multiple modes, the lady expresses her dissatisfaction with the man’s behaviour and illustrates an instance of effective communication in interpersonal conflict!

People are looking for healing in places they didn't used to look. Acupuncture, sound baths, energy work — once dismissed as fringe, are now very much moving into the mainstream. That shift shows up in the numbers. Wellness is a trillion dollar industry in the U.S. Americans spend more than $6,000 per person each year on it. That's the broader current carrying a lot of what used to be considered alternative medicine into wider use. It’s also taken on a much wider meaning. My guest Peter Bulliard works where physical and mental wellness collide. He’s a healer, more specifically, he calls himself a master shaman. Peter Bulliard was born in St. Martinville. He got a degree in art and later nursing, but spent years working as a touring musician, primarily as a drummer, before either of those careers took hold. A brain tumor diagnosis in 1998 changed his trajectory. He began studying healing practices, eventually training with shamans and spiritual teachers across the globe, including a stint at The Four Winds Shamanic School, before transitioning into full-time spiritual and healing work. His services include healing sessions, master classes and workshops, property cleansing, personalized mentoring, energy training, death doula services and spiritual guidance. He's also the author of the book Heal Anxiety in One Day. That search for the fabric of reality isn't just happening in wellness. It's happening in our closets, too — a pushback against fast fashion, mass production, and clothes that fall apart in a year. People are turning to the essential fabric of American style: Denim. Dark indigo washes and vintage-inspired silhouettes are back in style. Selvedge mills produce limited runs and the process can produce one-of-a-kind pieces. The fabric has become a natural fit for boutique brands looking to offer exclusivity their bigger competitors can't. If you’re in Lafayette and want a unique show piece, pop by Son of a Texan in Downtown Lafayette, owned by my guest, Sky King. Sky moved often as a kid — rural Kentucky, Texas, Louisiana — and spent much of his adolescence at a remote church camp, which he says shaped his comfort with rural, small-community life. After high school, he skipped college and went straight into restaurant and food service work, which occupied much of his early adult life. It was his grandfather who first taught him to iron and shine his shoes, planting an early interest in clothing and textiles. After his father died about six years ago, Sky began reassessing his direction — and found his way, alongside his wife Katrena, who'd been taught to sew and repair clothes by her own grandmother, toward a business built around longevity and repairability. Son of a Texan opened in 2025. They specialize in selvedge denim and durable, small-batch goods from independent makers — clothing meant to be worn for years, repaired, and passed down. It’s good for business that people are always wanting more. Sometimes the trick is to convince them to slow down and maybe invest in something deeper and more durable, like spiritual balance or a nice pair of jeans. Out to Lunch Acadiana was recorded live over lunch at Tsunami Sushi in downtown Lafayette. Larken and Amanda Rose return to Outer Limits of Inner Truth to discuss the philosophy of self ownership, the illusion of authority, and their new book and live event, both titled Approaching Humanity. Larken is the author of The Most Dangerous Superstition, and together the Roses catch listeners up on their work at the Rose Channel, including the Candles in the Dark seminar that teaches people how to reach friends and family with the message of liberty without arguing or debating, along with the deep library of talks and exclusive content they offer subscribers. They then lay out the heart of Approaching Humanity, an event set for July 18th in the Sedona or Prescott, Arizona area, featuring speakers including Patrick Smith of the Disenthrall channel and James Corbett joining remotely from Japan. Where their earlier work focused on tearing down the belief that authority can ever be legitimate, this new project flips the approach and describes the positive vision instead, painting a picture of how people might treat one another and organize in a world that does not hand its judgment and conscience over to a ruling class. The conversation moves through the central argument Larken and Amanda return to often, that the world's problems are driven less by a handful of genuinely malicious people and more by the enormous number of well meaning people who fund, obey, and enforce on their behalf, and that the only power the few hold is the power the many agree to give them. They point to a cultural shift already underway, citing the public pushback police now face online, the recruitment struggles of police and military, and ordinary people questioning authority out loud for the first time, which they believe plants doubt even in those who never speak up. Together with host Ryan, the Roses explore why so many people choose what they call familiar injustice over unfamiliar freedom, the fear of imagining life behind door number two, and how the final section of the book, the Unbound World, sketches what voluntary cooperation could look like. The discussion closes on more personal ground, including Larken's own near death experience and how it made him a fearless speaker, along with references to David Icke, economist Martin Armstrong, and historical examples like Iceland and indigenous societies that functioned without centralized rule. Hello everyone! In light of the tragedies facing the world and America today, I found it timely to bring this talk to teachers. I don't believe there has ever been a time in modern history when our students need to be doing what matters most—exploring their thoughts and reflecting on the ideas, experiences, and lives of others. With the murder of George Floyd giving rise to Black Lives Matter protests across the globe, and an unprecedented pandemic changing everything about modern life, we need to become better teachers NOW. To help give us the tools to empower students in such a way, I brought on my friend Travis Crowder to discuss his approach to reading workshop, and more specifically, his use of journals as tools for student reflection. If you missed part one, check it out here.  If you've ever struggled with keeping a journal or binder neat (or useful), or wondered if there was a better way to get kids invested in their reading, this is the podcast for you.  Travis Crowder is the co-author of Sparks in the Dark, and his latest book, Reflective Readers is out now (and it is FANTASTIC.) This episode originally appeared as #167.

──────────────────────────────────────── [00:05:00] Hegseth Quotes Psalm 144 as God's Blessing for War — Knight: David Prayed Before Every Battle and Never Assumed God Was With Him David used the Urim and Thummim to ask God's will before war. Hegseth has no such instrument and no declaration of war from God or Congress. ──────────────────────────────────────── [00:15:00] Dispensationalism's Core Error: Treating the Shadow as Greater Than the Reality It Points To Knight: Hebrews was written to people returning to the shadow of Judaism rather than the substance in Christ — Hegseth and Huckabee are the Judaizers of Galatians, replacing Christ with a political state. ──────────────────────────────────────── [00:28:00] Nick Kupper: The COVID Shot Was Never Legally Approved — Pfizer Didn't Manufacture an Approved Version Until January 2022 DOD admitted in Kupper's lawsuit that nothing was fully approved until June 2022 — by which time the Air Force had already kicked people out for the unlawfully mandated product. ──────────────────────────────────────── [00:38:00] Kupper's Base Immunologist Admitted He Had More Antibodies Than the Vaccinated — His Religious Accommodation Was Denied Anyway Kupper had natural immunity; his immunologist confirmed he had more antibodies than someone with both shots. There's a lot of fantastic music being made by Brazilian artists living in the U.S. They entertain an estimated 1.5 million Brazilian immigrants here as well as a growing number of other fans. And Brazilian music is enjoying a resurgence here - on Mazda commercials, endless bossa nova soundtracks played in upscale restaurants; inter-cultural collaborations and so on. We'll hear many of the best: Jorge Alabe, the godfather of many samba schools; Bebel Gilberto, daughter of bossa pioneer Joao Gilberto; singer Luciana Souza; the quirky percussionist Cyro Baptista; the funky, unorthodox Forro in the Dark and others. They all have fascinating stories to tell. We'll hear them in concert, visit with them in their homes, and hear songs from records produced in the U.S. New York University's widely published Professor of Music Jason Stanyek will be our co-host.
