Lorimer, who also serves as associate dean for research in the Eberly College, first received the news in March, right after he got out of class. “Interestingly, we'd been studying Hawking radiation from black hole explosions in class that day, which was one of the landmark achievements of Stephen Hawking (who was elected to the Royal Society in 1974)... My immediate reaction…was, ‘Wow!' Being connected to this legacy was quite awe-inspiring and emotional for me.” Founded in 1660, and now the oldest continuously running organization of its kind, the Royal Society is an independent scientific academy devoted to advancing science for the betterment of humanity. This is a rebroadcast of a previous episode. What is required to be a competitive applicant starts with your preparation years. In the past, students with great grades and good MCAT scores were shoe-ins for admission. We know that the admissions process now in 2023 is far more complex and competitive for even the most incredible students to navigate. This episode breaks apart some of the common, myths, misconceptions, and barriers to preparing yourself for the health professions and gives some advice on ways to adjust your thinking to improve your approach, and ultimately, your enjoyment in preparing for this journey.AUDIO: INTRO Song was Fun Life by FASSoundsOUTRO Song was Best Time by FASSoundsACKNOWLEDGEMENT:The Prehealth Podcast at Penn State is a production of Prehealth Advising in the Eberly College of Science at The Pennsylvania State University. Gun Violence and Mass Shootings, while not unique to the United States, is a uniquely US American problem in how it is viewed and treated. In this week's episode, we are once again joined by Dr. Mekel to discuss this ethical concern, its impact on healthcare, and what future providers should be thinking about and considering to positively influence this issue in their future work - especially for primary care providers. In this episode, we discuss semaglutides, more commonly referred to by their brand names (Wegovy, Ozempic, etc.) have grown significantly in popularity. Originally designed and intended for managing diabetes in a more efficient and effective manner, they have begun to be prescribed for weight loss and have been heralded as a miracle cure for obesity. As with all miracle cures, the other side isn't as glamorous as we'd like to think. For most applicants, their worst case scenario is a cycle that does not result in an acceptance. It is hard to experience a "failed" application. It can feel dehumanizing, like you aren't a good applicant, or that you won't ever get an acceptance. However, there is power in learning what went wrong and taking the steps to improve yourself and what you can offer to a health professions program. This episode overviews what students who haven't not had a positive result in their cycle to consider to improve their overall application. Reapplicants can be some of the strongest applicants in the cycle. For applicants in the current application cycle, January can be a difficult time. Some of you may have not heard from schools at all, some of you may be waiting on decisions post-interview, and some of you may be on waitlists possibly even at your dream program. [This is a rebroadcast of a previous episode but is being rereleased since the content is timely for students working toward their Comprehensive Review or working on their portfolio.] Most students barely give the Biographical Section much thought and for most students, it makes a lot of sense. The section is mostly data entry and includes some pretty routine, standard information. But understanding how this information is used in the application process is helpful for students in crafting it with care. Additionally, this section includes questions about a student's legal and institutional history - these questions are essential to get right for students to be fully considered and reviewed by schools. This week, we focus on this important section to help applicants understand its power in their application.AUDIO:INTRO Song was Fun Life by FASSoundsOUTRO Song was Best Time by FASSoundsACKNOWLEDGEMENT:The Penn State PreHealth Podcast is a production of the PreHealth Advising Office in the Eberly College of Science at Penn State University. This will be the first in a series of rebroadcasted episodes to be able to reach new listeners with our back catalog of episodes. Roughly 1 in 4 students at Penn State identify as 1st Generation (this varies by campus). First-generation (first-gen) students tend to have higher satisfaction in their college experience compared to their peers, greater learning gains, and demonstrate a greater ability to overcome setbacks of all kinds. However, they often face psychological, academic, financial, and social challenges that their peers do not experience in the same ways, and about one in three leave college within the first three years. In this week's conversation, we dive deep into a conversation about this population with our colleague, Marc Counterman - a first-generation Penn State graduate and current PreHealth Adviser at Penn State.AUDIO:INTRO Song was Fun Life by FASSoundsOUTRO Song was Best Time by FASSoundsACKNOWLEDGEMENT:The Penn State PreHealth Podcast is a production of the PreHealth Advising Office in the Eberly College of Science at Penn State University. Please join us for the most popular of our re-runs thus far. It's the return of Episode 55 with Professor Christopher Snyder on Tolkien and Virtue Ethics! In this episode, I am joined by Christopher Snyder, professor of history and director of British Studies at Mississippi State University, to discuss J.R.R. Tolkien's fiction and virtue ethics. We discuss Tolkien's background , training, academic work and influences, how to think about his fiction and its enduring value, and what role virtue plays in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Drawing on arguments from his latest book, Hobbit Virtues, Chris and I discuss the role of imagination in the moral life and why Tolkien isn't just or even primarily for children. As always, I hope you enjoy our conversation. Christopher Snyder became the first dean of the Shackouls Honors College at Mississippi State University in 2011. He is Professor of History and Director of British Studies at MSU, an affiliated faculty member in the Department of English, and was a History Research Fellow at the University of Oxford from 2014 to 2019. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and a Distinguished Alumnus of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University, where he majored in Medieval and Renaissance Studies. Dr. Snyder has authored ten books and numerous articles in the fields of archaeology, history, literary criticism, ethics, and medieval studies. His most recent book is Hobbit Virtues: Rediscovering Virtue Ethics through J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings (New York and London: Pegasus/ Simon & Schuster, 2020) . Start your weekend off with another episode of The People of Penn State! Today, we welcome alumna Dr. Ala Stanford to the program for an insightful conversation about medicine and health equity. Dr. Stanford discussed her time at Penn State, (including her days as a Lion Ambassador), her career path, transforming her private practice into a Covid-19 testing center during the height of the pandemic, what it's like to become a public figure, working with Will Smith, and disparities in healthcare. More background on Dr. Stanford:She gained national recognition during the COVID-19 pandemic using the infrastructure of her pediatric surgery practice to create a grassroots organization to focus on testing, contact tracing and vaccination in communities devoid of access to care and resources. Dr. Stanford has been a practicing physician for over 25 years. She is former director of the Center for Minority Health and Health Disparities of Temple University School of Medicine, a member of the Philadelphia Board of Health, Philadelphia Department of Health COVID19 advisory board and a trusted national leader and public health advocate. In addition to opening a Center for Health Equity to improve health outcomes in communities with the lowest life expectancy, her organization was responsible for providing over 100,000 COVID-19 tests and vaccinations. She earned two degrees from Penn State — a Bachelor of Science degree from the Eberly College of Science and a doctor of medicine degree from the College of Medicine — and went on to become the first African American female pediatric surgeon trained entirely in the United States. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Follow Dr. Stanford on social media: TwitterFacebookInstagramLearn more about the Penn State Alumni Association: alumni.psu.edu. In the 1980s, there was one topic that was more on the mind of infectious disease specialists than anything else but was rarely talked about at all. This disease would eventually be known as HIV/AIDS. Despite the public health crisis presented by this disease, very few physicians would treat patients with the symptoms, or when testing became available, the disease. What is required to be a competitive applicant starts with your preparation years. In the past, students with great grades and good MCAT scores were shoe-ins for admission. The collapse of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in early March left many wondering whether the global financial system was on the precipice of a 2008 style meltdown. Just as the waters seemed to calm after that, UBS stepped in to buy Credit Suisse as that bank collapsed and as we record this regional First Republic Bank seemed to be teetering. The risks inherent to and the regulation of banking is the focus of this episode of Stats and Stories with guest Dr. John Liechty. Dr. Liechty is a Professor at the Smeal College of Business, with a courtesy appointment as a Professor of Statistics at the Eberly College of Science. He is interested in the creation of public goods and the role that universities can play in these efforts. Past initiatives include leading an effort that resulted in a provision in the Dodd-Frank Act of 2010 that creates a new Office in the U.S. Treasury, the Office of Financial Research, which has the mandate to provide better data and analytic tools to the regulatory community in order to safeguard the U.S. financial system.

Most students barely give the Biographical Section much thought and for most students, it makes a lot of sense. In this week's conversation, we dive deep into a conversation about this population with our colleague, Marc Counterman - a first-generation Penn State graduate and current PreHealth Adviser at Penn State.
