This week, Kate brings a first-hand reminiscence of early Haliburton County from Marjorie Clark - a columnist in the Echo newspaper. Plus, Paul has the story of Winthrop Pickard Bell - a Canadian academic and spy who became arguably the world's foremost foreign expert on the political and military state of Germany after the end of WW1. His early warnings of the rise of the Nazis, increasing militarism, and threats to Jews and other groups had influence on the preparations of the allies for WW2. Author Jason Bell has called Winthrop Canada's greatest spy. Kate Butler is the Director of the Haliburton Highlands Museum. Paul Vorvis is the host of the Your Haliburton Morning Show 7 - 9 a.m. Fridays on Canoe FM 100.9 and streaming on your devices. Whoops, we accidentally predicted the future too well in our last episode! So we're back to catch up on the doom and gloom at Paramount+, the mass hysteria surrounding Amazon Prime Video's turn to ads, and more news from the past month. Then we'll make the case for why Marvel's new “Spotlight” series Echo breathes new life into their struggling TV formula… if you can make it through the first 25 minutes of franchise-mandated flashbacks. Plus it's a new year, so it's time to get your streaming house in order. We'll help you budget with the return of our awards-pending advice segment Add/Keep/Cancel. ———
This week, Kate talks about 2 time-capsule stories from an August 1926 edition of the Minden Echo highlighting some local going's on. It's always interesting to get a ground level local view of life in times gone past. Plus, Paul was curious about how the Canadian Navy came to be. It's a bit of a convoluted story. Did you know that there's a secret sensor in your Echo? In some Echos at least - and it's cool. In fact, it can tell you just how cool (or hot) it is. ---- Feedback, comments, demos pleas to ✉️ thedottodotpodcast@gmail.com

In this weeks Talking Tech, David celebrates his 30 years at the RBS of NSW and now Vision Australia by discussing some of the tech highlights over his time working as a technology specialist. With these notes, you get the whole list, enjoy. Unusual or Meaningful Tech Over the Last 30 years When I started work for the then RBS of NSW (now Vision Australia) on June 4 1990, my tech on my desk was a Keynote PC Plus based on a Toshiba 1000, a Braille & Speak note taker, and of course a telephone land line. Tech sitting on my desk 2020 for general everyday stuff, iPhone, QBraille Braille Display, iPad, MacBook Pro, Surface Pro, Google Home, Amazon Echo, and HomePod: plus my audio studio setup for podcasting and my radio program. In no particular order, this is a list of all the tech that I have personally used for both home and work over the last 30 years covering my time at both Royal Blind Society of NSW then Vision Australia). Where amazingly some of the tech still exists when it first came out and where it has evolved to current, I’ve put the updated version in the current lists as well. Interestingly, there are over 10 products that are Assistive Tech related that have lasted the test of time and are in the old and current tech sections. Where some of the products may not be that well known (at least according to me smile), I’ve put a very short blurb next to them. Oddly or not, I wish some of the devices that are no longer around still were, as they did some great specific things. For me, I think the main technology advances were: Microsoft Windows 3.1 access (keeping in mind Outspoken had been out for a while for Macs) in the 1990’s, Mobile and Smart phone access in the 2000’s (Talkback for Synbian and VoiceOver for iPhone) plus VoiceOver for the Mac in 2005, Smart speakers and Smart home tech in 2010-2020. Things we still need to conquer: Ongoing message and change for accessibility across mobile/desktop apps, and the huge one, the web. Access to self service kiosks. Indoor navigation. Accessibility in white goods. Accessible EFTPOS terminals (Apple Pay sort of gets around this). More audio described content on free to air. Hate to pick out out Foxtel, but they sort of deserve it, an accessible Foxtel box. One final point, we should be careful about assigning accessibility based on the fact that it works with one specific type of software, particularly in the screen reader industry. Old Tech If you haven’t heard of some of this stuff, use good old Google, should still be some info floating around. If it brings back hopefully good memory’s I’m glad. Intro Randy and Christa chime in with some stats and thoughts as we approach the Black Friday Season. Announcements (And Lots of Show Notes!) Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, which means that Thanksgiving is on Thursday. Do not forget that, you turkeys. I did not know this, but the term Black Friday is used because, since the early 1950's, when sales on items would be so big, stores would tip into “The black”. As retailers continued to grow, they pushed Black Friday openings to earlier and earlier times…many stores promoting the idea of opening at 8pm on Black Thursday..but those sales tactics didn't work. Then, of course, you have the door buster deals. I think most people understand how that works, and that's when a store has a EXTREMELY limited stock on some goodies they'll hand you at the door. It's clever, but it's not always likely that you'll get a free LCD monitor. Looking back to last year, Walmart was offering “Light up Black Friday” party with free coffee and cookies. Try harder, Walmart. As a tech guy, you'll generally see this deal often, and that's where $100 is slashed off the price of many Laptop brands. Retailers are going to have to be a little more creative to stay alive in this market. It's not necessarily that the Holidays are the best time to buy. Things such as Winter clothing and fitness equipment is almost always less expensive in late winter and, according to Business Insider, fitness deals peak in January. That does seem to make sense, because I know it's easy to predict that every year we'll see the Fitness Clubs posting their New Year Resolution commercials to get people in the gym. Deals: By Keyboard Or, you can avoid stepping foot in a store altogether. You can stay safe off the roads while others are rushing to the store. I have this theory that online retailers like to space out their extreme web server traffic. Think about it, even Amazon's site can crawl on “Prime Day” – if you remember the terrible website issues they had in 2018, when many saw a “Sorry” message with a photo of a dog, rather than the product they wanted to snag a deal on. More of the same as last year Google trying hard to sell Google Home, Amazon with Echos Google's Home products can answer more complex questions, Alexa still hears better, in my opinion, and I still think that the Echo Plus is a great device and I'm happy I bought it for the ZigBee Radio abilities. Deals on the Google Pixel 4 – Don't buy it. It snaps like a twig. Don't buy Google Stadia – Let it die. Gaming does need to pass any more control to the cloud. How would you like there to be a real remote shut-off switch for all of your shit? – well, Stadia is a great start. PC Gamer's website does bring up a good point, though, and that is that “No one wants to be the Blockbuster to someone else's Netflix”. Source: https://www.pcgamer.com/what-happens-if-stadia-wins/ Use a computer. I don't care how fast and efficient you are with a smartphone. I could have my 89-year old grandfather sign in on a laptop and whoop a mobile phone deal-seeker's ass. Even better, for you multi-monitor users out there, have your deals on different screens, compare them, and defeat. Sites that can save you time Brad's Deals – Ben's Bargains has a team of deal seekers, even providing a paragraph Bio for each of them on the site. Probably the most-popular, boasting numbers of 10 Million Monthly users, with 80% returning visits and 15 Million app installs. They're hiring in California and Nevada. The cool thing about Slick Deals is that the deals are “Rated and Reviewed by the community”. For the totally-obsessed, Slick deals even has a Live Feed view (in beta). It basically looks like a twitter live tweet screen for deals. So if you're insane, definitely check that out. It's at Slickdeals.net/live.

The Echo Show 5 is very well priced at $99.99 which offers great value. What is the Echo Show 5?It’s the second Echo device with a rectangular screen. Its name refers to the size of its five and a half inches screen. It has two microphones which helps in using the far field recognition. It has a volume up and down button on top of it, a micro-USB port, and a 3.5mm audio output which can used to plug into a higher quality stereo system or speaker. It has the power port at the back which plugs into the wall. It’s about 5.8 inches wide, 3.4 inches in height, and 2.9 inches in depth, and comes in either sandstone or charcoal color.Echo Show 5 Versus Echo ShowCompared to the Echo Show, the Show has double the screen size with a higher resolution, but the price difference is huge with the Show going for $300. The Show has better two 10-Watt speakers while the Echo Show 5 has a 1.65 inch 4-Watt speaker. The camera on the Echo Show 5, which enables the user to do video calling, is a one megapixel camera while the one on the Echo Show is a five megapixel camera. The Echo Show 5 lacks a built-in zigbee smart home hub which means if a user has some zigbee compatible smart home devices, and they want a hub to control them, they will need some additional hardware to control them, that is if they only have the Echo Show 5.The sound on the Echo Show 5 is better than the Echo Dot and Echo Spot. The one feature that it has which is not in other Echo devices, is the built-in camera shutter. This is good for people with privacy issues. The physical camera shutter that covers the camera ensures that nobody can hack the camera for whatever reason. There is however a software method of shutting off the camera and the microphone on both the Echo Show and Echo Show 5. Teri’s First ImpressionsWhen he first plugged it in, there was very little setup to do because the Echo devices that are already set up with his home network including the passwords, are already stored with Amazon. He went into the settings to see what he could set up and found several options for how to customize the screen background. It can even be used as a photo frame. It’s a voice-first device but it can also be used as a touch screen. It has the sunrise alarms feature which simulates a sunrise in the morning between 4 am and 9 am.Teri prefers the Echo Show 5 as the best buy compared to other Echo devices, especially the ones with a screen. Meinen PodCast abonnieren: | direkt | iTunes | Spotify |

In this episode, Teri talks about everything that has gone on in the first year since launching the Alexa in Canada podcast, blog and community, and everything that is to come. Happy Birthday Alexa in Canada! When Teri launched the podcast/blog, Amazon had not announced that Alexa was coming to Canada.Teri was interested in voice technology, did some research and discovered that there no resource in Canada for people to learn about Amazon Alexa. He decided to create the blog and started documenting all that he was learning about Amazon Alexa. HighlightsWhen Amazon officially announced Alexa into Canada, Canadians weren’t get the same devices that people in the United States got. The only devices they had in the market were the Echo Dot, the Echo, and the Echo Plus.A lot of Canadians wanted access to the other devices and so they choose to set their addresses to the United States so they could access the devices in the US and use all the skills and features available in the US.Canada used to be a couple months behind with features and there was very limited functionality. Now we have the Echo Dot, Echo, Echo Spot (the first screen one that was introduced), Echo Plus, Echo Show, and the Echo Sub (a subwoofer). Amazon Alexa has also been put into many other different devices and components in Canadian homes like light switches, thermostats, audio speakers, and many more. How Canadians are Embracing the TechnologyIt took Americans approximately 3 years to reach a 7% market adoption rate. The adoption rate in Canada is at 8% within less than a year. The Alexa in Canada CommunityTeri has made some incredible connections and met some incredible people in the voice first space that have taught him so much about voice technology. The podcast has now been downloaded more than 25,000 times in approximately 40 countries around the world. The biggest listenership is in Canada, but Americans form about 50% of the listenership of Canadians. For every 100 Canadian listeners there are 50 American listeners. The Alexa in Canada Facebook group has grown to over 1,000 people. Community members always take time to answer each other’s questions. There is a mailing list and can be signed up on the home page at AlexaInCanada.caThe Flash BriefingTo learn more about voice technology and Amazon Alexa, Teri started the Voice in Canada flash briefing with the core goal of updating people on what is going on in the Amazon Alexa world on a daily basis. He spent a lot of time learning how to launch a flash briefing. With the support and great reviews of listeners, the flash briefing became the “Number 1 Rated Flash Briefing in Canada” and has maintained that since its inception. The flash briefing has so far been downloaded almost 60,000 times and has been listened to in approximately 20 different countries.People wanted detailed advice on how to create a flash briefing which prompted him to create a course called “Flash Briefing Formula”. He has received great reviews on the course.TutorialsTeri created tutorials on the website to help people figure out how to set up devices. When new features came out Teri would update the tutorials to keep up with that.He also created a tutorial on “How to create a flash briefing” Networking and Speaking at ConferencesThe networks Teri has built with different people in the voice first space have led to him being invited to speak at different conferences.Teri joined the VoiceFirst.fm Podcast NetworkHe has guest lectured through video at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology for a marketing class. He taught about flash briefings. The Voice First Health PodcastDue to his background in healthcare as a physician, he was looking for an opportunity to join his passions of technology, education and healthcare which led him to start this podcast. It’s also part of the VoiceFirst.fm Podcast Network.Teri’s goal through the podcast is to learn about what is going on in healthcare with regards to voice technology. He interviews some of the leaders that are doing remarkable things, research, and creating incredible products that are going to transform the way we experience healthcare. He has spoken and keynoted at several medical conferences.Next Project for TeriIt’s hard for people to discover good quality flash briefings on the Amazon skill store because the numbers are growing rapidly. One has to scroll through those lists to find what they need and it’s not a very user friendly process.Teri is about to launch a resource that people can go to to get high quality and vetted flash briefings that will provide value, excellent content and professionally produced. There will be different categories and they will cover different topics. The panel also digs down into other recent developments, such as Amazon's launch of Alexa into the Irish market and whether it's worth getting an Echo, Echo Dot or Echo Plus, or whether it's worth holding on for an Apple HomePod.
