Flowing East and West: The Perfectly Imperfect Journey to a Fulfilled Life

She was at the top of her game with one of the world's most iconic brands, doing the work that had taken her across the world and back multiple times. From the outside looking in, things looked really good for Shelley Paxton. But, she had a secret.  Shelley would be awoken every night by the same nightmare and walked through her days with anxiety, both of which she tried to numb with busyness and alcohol. She finally reached a point where she couldn't tolerate the pain of playing to someone else's version of success and went on a journey to find her lost soul.  Shelley no longer believes in following the rules, and wants to lead a revolution for all of us to reclaim our rebel nature and fully dance to the beat of our own music.     Bio   Think Brené Brown meets Biker Babe, with a dash of Liz Gilbert. Shelley Paxton is the Founder of Soulbbatical, a company she started with the mission to liberate the souls of leaders and organizations by inspiring them to realize (and rebel for) their greatest purpose, possibility, and impact. As an ICF-certified professional coach, Shelley works with executives at Fortune 100 companies as well as fellow rebel soul individuals and entrepreneurs. Shelley wrote the book Soulbbatical: A Corporate Rebel's Guide to Finding Your Best Life as a manifesto on breaking free from the traditional shoulds and should-nots of life and leadership. It's about rewriting the script of success—personally and professionally.    At the height of Shelley's 26-year career as an accomplished marketing executive and global brand leader, she discovered that the view from the top of the corporate ladder lacked the fulfillment she expected. In fact, it was taking the joy out of her life—and the life out of her. Shelley realized that she had been playing by someone else's rules for so long that she didn't even realize what she'd lost: a connection to her own soul. It would take her own Soulbbatical for Shelley to get reacquainted with her purpose: to teach people how to rebel for who they are, what they want, and the impact they want to have in the world. “You can get to the top of a particular mountain and feel success-empty,” explains Shelley Paxton, speaker and author of Soulbattical: A Corporate Rebel's Guide to Finding Your Best Life. Shelley worked for many years as a marketing executive including a glamorous career as the Chief Marketing Officer of Harley-Davidson. However, while she may have looked extremely successful from the outside, inside she was experiencing full-fledged burnout.  Five and a half years into her sexy motorcycle-riding, black-leather-wearing career, Shelley began to have a recurring nightmare that led her on a journey of meditation and soul-searching. After months of self-exploration, she realized that this dream was telling her that she was completely disconnected from her true self. She had aligned her idea of success with checking boxes on a list that didn't actually make her feel fulfilled. By leaving her marketing career behind and learning how to slow down and be present, Shelley was able to discover real success and leave her burnout behind.  Tune into today's episode of FRIED. The Burnout Podcast for a conversation with Shelley Paxton about the meaning of success, asking for help, and connecting with your soul. Hear tips from Shelley on how to slow down and make time for yourself, so you can move from success-empty to success-FULL.   Quotes • “In my quest to be this badass, trying to be all things to all people, all my boundaries fell. I was bending over backwards and people-pleasing, and I realized this has been a pattern in my life.” (05:08-05:21) • “Five and a half years in, I start having this nightmare… I am seeing the same thing night after night after night. It is ripping me out of my sleep and frankly, it's the universe waking me up to the fact that I have totally lost connection with my soul and with myself. After a lot of examination and exploration and seeing doctors and learning about slowing down and mindfulness and meditation, I start to realize and understand that what this dream is telling me is… my soul was malnourished and longing for attention, longing to be fed and loved and that I was living my dad's dream.”  (05:56-06:55) • “Ultimately this thing called ‘success' was somebody else's definition of it. I was ticking all the boxes of traditional success when the majority of those – money and titles and accolades and material things – wasn't feeding me inside and wasn't truly connecting with me. You can get to the top of a particular mountain and feel success-empty. The whole world looks at you and goes, ‘Oh my God she has everything, look at her.' And you're going, ‘Oh my God, this is all just armor and it's spit-polished to a shine and I'm a hot fucking mess on the inside and I'm afraid to say anything because I have been taught that this is what success looks like.'” (06:57-07:57) • “You're not alone. We're in this together. More of us feel this way than I ever knew five years ago when I walked away from Harley. I truly thought I was alone.” (10:54-11:05) • “If I continue living as I am now, for the next three, five, ten years or more, am I moving toward who I want to become or further away?” (18:15-18:28) • “If you feel like this when you're 50, you're gonna have a short, miserable life. You're gonna be one of those people who slugs it through until retirement and dies on the day after she retires. Or you're not gonna make it that far. Is this the life you really want to be living? Do you want to feel this way? What I've realized is that success is a feeling. It's not a checklist.” (18:41-19:14) • “What if the most iconic brand I could ever represent is Shelley Paxton?” (19:42-19:48) • “The value of being present is noticing, getting curious. You see the little signs that the universe has been giving you along the way. It sounds cheesy and maybe it is cheesy, but I've come to love it…When I'm fully present, I am noticing what's being given to me at every moment and I am fully connected to myself and the people that I'm with.” (27:15-27:52) • “Boundaries over busyness. Boundaries over burnout…resentment is really a sign of a violated boundary.” (38:39-38:50) • “Success feels like I go to bed tired with a smile on my face. I go to bed tired with the knowledge that I don't feel empty, I feel full. I feel tired because I left it all on the field today. I showed up for this conversation, for my people, and for myself. That feels so incredible.” (42:16-42:44)   Links https://soulbbatical.com/  https://www.instagram.com/soulbbatical/  https://www.linkedin.com/in/shelley-paxton-759163/    XOXO, C If you know that it's time to actually DO something about the burnout cycle you've been in for too long - book your free consult today: bit.ly/callcait Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Cheryle Jackson is the CEO and Founder of Grit + Grace, The Movement, a women’s empowerment, coaching, and media company helping female leaders powerfully pursue their potential and align their self-care with their ambition. Before founding the company in 2018, she served as the Senior Vice President of Global Business Development and President of AAR Africa for AAR. In 2010, she was also a candidate for President Obama’s once-vacant U.S. Senate seat as well as the first female president and CEO of the Chicago Urban League. Among the many executive roles throughout her career, Cheryle has also worked with several non-profit organizations as well as shared the Grace + Grit message through public speaking engagements, including on the stage of TEDx. Cheryle joins me today to share why she is rebelling for women to rediscover their grit and grace and how she is helping women to understand the need to pair grit with grace in our lives. She shares the defining moment in her life when she realized practicing grace was a crucial element of reaching her full potential and how she discovered grit and grace go hand-in-hand. She explains what it truly means to be a “free agent” - to run your career on your own terms, be pro-active instead of reactive, and take your career ‘by the horns’ to create your own path to success. She also explains her concept on the “DNA of Brilliance” and what it could look like to practice grace every day, in everything you do.   “Grit alone ensures that you survive. But we’re here to do more than just survive; we want to thrive. Grace helps us to thrive.” - Cheryle Jackson   This week on Rebel Souls: Cheryle’s journey of pivots and how the Grit + Grace movement began How Cheryle discovered and developed her grit and resiliency The price of having the grit and tenacity to keep going Why Cheryle believes losing the U.S. Senate primary election was a blessing in disguise How Cheryle battled breast cancer and dealt with divorce while starting her business and how her experiences shined a light on the importance of grit, grace, and radical self-care When Cheryle realized grit and grace go hand-in-hand How Cheryle helped women pivot during the COVID-19 pandemic How Cheryle practices grace to stay connected to her soul What the “Grace Practice” is and the three actions that create our lives Identifying the triggers that cause you to fall out of grace and alignment with your soul Using your emotions as a tool to stay in alignment with your soul Cheryle’s concept of the “DNA of Brilliance” Why waiting for new opportunities to come your way is detrimental to your success Choosing to be a ‘free agent’ and why the key to being a free agent, beyond choosing yourself, is service-driven networking Understanding what’s driving your decisions How Cheryle is rebelling for change, social justice, and civil rights   Resources Mentioned: Book: Broken Open: How Difficult Times Can Help Us Grow by Elizabeth Lesser Book: Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth   Connect with Cheryle Jackson: Cheryle Jackson Website PIVOT! Where in your life have you decided you simply can't? And in this area of your journey, have you ever stopped to think what can happen if you asked yourself, “What if it's possible?” Because that's exactly what started some shifts in the life of Tim Snell, Head of Performance at the London tech start-up Modulous. Asking “what if'' questions took Tim on a journey that led him to a path of healing and self-discovery that opened his heart. Today, in addition to working on projects and initiatives at Modulous, Tim is also a Certified International Leadership & Performance Coach and SOMA Breath Advanced Instructor who leads his clients into places they never imagined they could achieve. In this episode, Tim and I discuss how the story of a young boy inspired him to embark on a spiritual journey and discover what's possible. We describe how Tim had lost his hearing at age four and how he later questioned the diagnosis about his hearing loss. We explain what shifts started happening as a result of Tim's deep exploration within. We also discuss the memoir Tim is currently writing, the challenges of the writing process, and the reason writers should never hike alone. “The process of ‘what if' is about opening yourself up to a different reality. It's also about working through other real blocks inside you.” - Tim Snell This week on Shift-Starters: Tim's journey of self-discovery and learning why he lost his hearing at a young age How Tim was treated differently after losing his hearing Turning to spiritual explorations to find answers The story of a boy who healed himself through meditative practices What Tim learned about his hearing loss when he went to a retreat in Peru Going deep into one's personal shadows and re-learning how to listen Discovering the blocks that prevented Tim from hearing How it's easy for us to blame other people for our problems and the importance of ownership Integrating our challenging experiences into ourselves The circumstances that inspired Tim to write his book The value of telling stories to help others Common misconceptions about writing and the writing process Why people should seek a community of writers Resources Mentioned: Soulbbatical: A Corporate Rebel's Guide to Finding Your Best Life by Shelley Paxton Connect with Tim Snell: Tim Snell Website Tim Snell on LinkedIn Tim Snell on Instagram Tim Snell on Facebook Tim Snell on YouTube Email: tim@timsnell.co Let's Start Some Shift! A Shift in How We Relate to Shifting

Have you ever felt like the universe was trying to tell you something? Or maybe you've noticed your inner critic rearing its ugly head again, despite all of the hard work you've devoted to personal growth and overcoming mindset blocks. There's an expectation that when we make a change in how we think, feel, and behave that we have moved past it and it never comes back. But that's not the case - at all. The thing about shifting is not to get rid of the things we don't like about ourselves - our inner critic, our dark sides, or our weaknesses. After all - extinguishing those would actually be taking away what makes us human. So how do we shift the way we relate to shifting? Today, I discuss why we need to shift the way we relate to shifting. I explain how many people perceive shifting as a way of eliminating negative thoughts, feelings, or weaknesses. I explain why it's not about becoming more perfect, but about how we relate to our human imperfections. I also explain how you can embrace your flaws, inner critic, and imperfections while continuing to move forward - even when it feels like you've taken a step back. “Shifting is not to become more perfect or less ‘human'. It's about how we relate to all of those parts of us that we don't like.” - Erin Baker This week on Shift-Starters: Common misconceptions and expectations we have about mindset shifts Embracing our flaws and imperfections What ‘shifting' really means and the role of self-compassion Understanding that your thoughts are just thoughts How to embrace your imperfections while continuing to move forward Resources Mentioned: Soulbbatical: A Corporate Rebel's Guide to Finding Your Best Life by Shelley Paxton Let's Start Some Shift! She discusses how you can trust, surrender, and follow your soul's desires while working in the corporate environment and why the first step to reconnecting to your soul is to get reacquainted with yourself and your personal values. She also explains the difference between rebelling for something versus rebelling against something and why she believes, deep down, everyone has a rebel soul. “You have to know where you're heading, and you first have to know yourself because getting reconnected with your soul really is getting reconnected with your GPS system.” - Shelley Paxton This week on Life in the AND: Shelley's big, audacious goal of liberating a billion souls - one soul at a time How Shelley stays grounded in holding onto her big, overarching goal while liberating one individual soul at a time The magic that happens when you trust AND surrender to your soul's process Bridging the gap between working in the corporate world while following your soul's desires Getting reacquainted with yourself and your values and why it's the first step to reconnecting to your soul Choosing to believe that crisis always comes as a gift to teach us a lesson Why Shelley believes everyone has a rebel soul How your ‘ands' are the lego pieces of your life Using fear as fuel to get to where you want to go Why Shelley believes trusting and surrendering to your soul's desires is the “And” everyone should stand for Resources Mentioned: The Power of Moments: Why Certain Experiences Have Extraordinary Impact by Chip Heath and Dan Heath Connect with Shelley Paxton: Soulbbatical Rebel Souls Podcast Book: Sabbatical: A Corporate Rebel's Guide to Finding Your Best Life Shelley Paxton on LinkedIn Shelley Paxton on Instagram Soulbbatical on Facebook Shelley Paxton on Twitter Embrace Life in the AND Thanks for tuning into this week's episode of Life in the AND, the podcast helping you embrace the AND in your life to cultivate more authenticity, creativity, inclusiveness, and love in every area of the world around you. Mark Silverman - executive coach, speaker, and best-selling author of Only 10s 2.0: Confront Your To-Do List and Transform Your Life - is a true soul brother. When he was working for the fastest-growing startups in the corporate world, Mark was able to sell $90 million worth of products and led teams through multi-million dollar complex sales. After doing some deep, inner work and self-exploration, Mark found new freedom that he shares with others by creating Only 10s, a system of tools CEOs and business leaders use to overcome overwhelm and make the business and life they want. Mark joins me today to reveal the keys that can help us get out of the prisons we have created for ourselves and reclaim our freedom in life. He shares his story of going from homelessness to sobriety and encountering the “cosmic bricks” that awakened him to his freedom. He describes the role of contemplation and self-exploration in determining the 10s in our lives and explains how we can distinguish the things that pretend to be 10s from the real ones. He also shares some exercises to help us reconnect with our inner self and highlights the impact of seizing our 10s. “Midlife is the time where we can be the most free; it’s the time when we’re too tired to keep up the charades. It has its own consequences, but those consequences can land us to a better place.” - Mark Silverman *This week on Rebel Souls:* * Why Mark is rebelling FOR freedom for everybody * What cosmic bricks are and the first bricks that awakened Mark’s life to freedom * The importance of conscious choice and learning how we’re responsible for the quality of our life * An existential crisis of the highest order and what it means to not be imprisoned by difficult feelings * Transforming an overwhelmed multinational corporate executive in 45 minutes * The lies we tell ourselves about our to-do lists and what makes something a 10 * The power of using the head, heart, and gut brains to make decisions and how doing so helps when figuring out the 10s in our lives * The role of contemplation and self-discovery in finding your freedom * Contemplative tools to help you connect with your inner voice * How writing morning pages allows us to connect with our inner muse and intuition * The scariest parts of not being busy and how to cope with them * The difference between a time-management problem and an honesty problem * Busyness, how it can be an addiction, and how it can keep us from the 10s * The importance of “ ME-tings” and a cautionary tale about Mark’s foot doctor * The creative genius-total loser cycle and how determining the 10s in our lives doubles our productivity * Discerning the things that masquerade as 10s and the need to let go of them * How the people around us could change when we start discovering our 10s * Why Mark was advised he couldn’t write Mastering Midlife without first completing Only 10s 2.0 * The rain of cosmic bricks and why midlife is our greatest opportunity to be free *Resources Mentioned:* * Man’s Search for Meaning ( https://www.amazon.com/Mans-Search-Meaning-Viktor-Frankl/dp/1416524282 ) by Viktor Frankl * The One Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results ( https://www.amazon.com/ONE-Thing-Surprisingly-Extraordinary-Results/dp/1885167776 ) by Gary Keller * Essentialism: The Disciplined Pursuit of Less ( https://www.amazon.com/Essentialism-Disciplined-Pursuit-Greg-McKeown/dp/0804137382 ) by Greg McKeown * Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World ( https://www.amazon.com/Deep-Work-Focused-Success-Distracted/dp/1455586692/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=deep+work&qid=1617789890&s=books&sr=1-1 ) by Cal Newport * Making the Case for a “Finding Your Best Self” with Corporate Rebel, Shelley Paxton | Mastering Midlife Podcast ( https://www.markjsilverman.com/podcast-all/2019/1/8/mastering-midlife-podcast-episode-1-hee4a-mf7wm-l9prx-mnrta-a5xr6-32z23-ljxdw-arg32-lkgfm-5rla4-zfa63-324ap-g7shm-dcnkj-3eed2-c8n9a-cj7f2-tcky5-brydc-zczcm-5g3cm-lf8bg-8fp3r ) * I Only 10s 2.0: Embracing Only the 10s in Your Life with Shelley Paxton and Erin Baker | Mastering Midlife Podcast ( https://www.markjsilverman.com/podcast-all/episode231-erin-baker-shelley-paxton ) *Related Content:* * Nick Onsen Rebelling FOR Living Your Fullest Expression ( https://soulbbatical.com/rebel-souls/nick-onken-rebelling-for-living-your-fullest-expression/ ) * Helen Appleby Rebelling FOR the Unwritten Rules of Women’s Leadership ( https://soulbbatical.com/rebel-souls/helen-appleby-rebelling-for-the-unwritten-rules-of-womens-leadership/ ) * Rebelling FOR the Big Rocks ( https://soulbbatical.com/rebel-souls/rebelling-for-the-big-rocks/ ) *Connect with Mark Silverman:* * Mastering Midlife ( http://masteringmidlife.com/ ) * Mastering Midlife Podcast ( https://www.markjsilverman.com/podcast-all ) * Book: Only 10s 2.0: Confront Your To-Do List and Transform Your Life ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08HPTHJRF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_d_asin_title_o00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) * Mark Silverman on LinkedIn ( http://www.linkedin.com/in/mark22102 ) * Mark Silverman on Facebook ( http://www.facebook.com/10216458818515307 ) * Mark Silverman on Twitter ( https://twitter.com/mjaysilverman ) * Mark Silverman on YouTube ( https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGO6YqCHMDVNa_m2yiBZEtA ) *Liberate Your Soul & Join the Rebelution* Thanks for tuning into this week’s episode of Rebel Souls with your host, Shelley Paxton, the podcast dedicated to helping leaders reject the status quo, liberate their soul, and become a lifelong rebel.
