Guest Bios:Shelley Paxton: Former CMO of Harley-Davidson, Shelley left her high-powered corporate career to pursue a more meaningful path, coining the term Soulbbatical. As an author, keynote speaker, and guide, Shelley helps others redefine success on their own terms, inspiring leaders to build bold, brave, and authentic lives. Shelley's signature message—“I Quit So You Don't Have To”—is the core of her keynote and forthcoming book.Chris Schembra: Founder of the 7:47 Gratitude Experience, Chris has made a career out of helping people connect more deeply through shared experiences. From hosting intimate dinners to delivering workshops and keynotes, Chris focuses on fostering vulnerability and gratitude, encouraging organizations to build a culture of empathy and inclusion. His latest book, Gratitude Through Hard Times, delves into the transformative power of appreciation.Core Topics:Liberating Yourself from “Success-Empty” to “Success-Full”: Shelley advocates for a fundamental redefinition of success that goes beyond external accolades. Through her concept of Soulbbatical, she explores how true fulfillment comes from listening to your own voice, not society's expectations. Shelley's goal is to help professionals escape the trap of “success-empty”—having material success but feeling unfulfilled—and embrace a richer, more meaningful version of success by aligning with their core values and passions.Fostering Human Connection as a Business Strategy: Chris emphasizes that human connection should be at the heart of every business strategy. By using gratitude as a tool for fostering genuine relationships, he challenges companies to build deeper bonds between employees and clients. His 7:47 Gratitude Experience—a shared meal centered around expressing thanks—demonstrates that something as simple as asking the right question can dismantle barriers, create a sense of belonging, and ultimately drive better business outcomes. The Courage to Say “No”: One of the hardest, yet most powerful strategies for growth is learning to say no. Whether it's declining opportunities that don't align with your values or setting boundaries that protect your energy, they argue that success comes not from chasing every option, but from focusing on what truly matters. For Shelley, this principle shows up in her ability to pass on engagements that don't resonate with her core message. For Chris, it's about maintaining focus on his passion for creating meaningful connections, rather than chasing every possible business avenue. The Impact of Living Your Values Daily: A key theme in both Shelley's and Chris's stories is the importance of living authentically. From Shelley's tattoo of “Authenticity” to Chris's “Focus Equals Growth” mantra, both speakers emphasize that true success comes from daily decisions that reinforce personal values. Whether it's through their keynote messages or personal interactions, they model how consistently honoring one's principles can lead to professional success and personal satisfaction. In this episode, we sit down with Shelley Paxton, Chief Soul Officer of Soulbattical to discuss an inward look at ourselves as leaders and business owners to make our work, the why behind what we do, more fulfilling. Key Takeaways:A "Soulbattical" is a time to take a step back, realign the work you're doing with what matters most to you, and living it out each day in your work. It involves living and leading with greater authenticity, courage, and fulfillment. Creating a fulfilling work environment means being able to bring our entire selves to work. We want our team members and us to be able to do that. One of Shelley's most powerful reflection questions: What are you pretending not to know?Avoid "Shoulding all over yourself". Living out of your authentic journey allows you to shed the "shoulds", the expectations that drive, challenge, and drain you consistently. Identify 3 that are not productive and take one of them you want to remove today. Reframe and step away from them. Take an inventory of your work and life and determine what falls into "Soul Fuels" and "Soul Sucks". Seek to maximize the fuels and minimize the sucks as much as possible. Flowing East and West: The Perfectly Imperfect Journey to a Fulfilled Life
She was at the top of her game with one of the world's most iconic brands, doing the work that had taken her across the world and back multiple times. From the outside looking in, things looked really good for Shelley Paxton. But, she had a secret. Shelley would be awoken every night by the same nightmare and walked through her days with anxiety, both of which she tried to numb with busyness and alcohol. She finally reached a point where she couldn't tolerate the pain of playing to someone else's version of success and went on a journey to find her lost soul. Shelley no longer believes in following the rules, and wants to lead a revolution for all of us to reclaim our rebel nature and fully dance to the beat of our own music. Bio Think Brené Brown meets Biker Babe, with a dash of Liz Gilbert. As former Chief Marketing Officer of Harley-Davidson, Shelley Paxton found herself at the top of the proverbial mountain feeling success-EMPTY instead of success-FULL. That awakening led her on a profound journey that became her mission, business, and Simon & Schuster- published bestselling book, Soulbbatical: A Corporate Rebel's Guide to Finding Your Best Life. She's leading a REBELution to rewrite the script of success. Shelley's inspiring work has been featured on NBC, CBS, Forbes, Thrive Global, Inc., Business Insider, Yahoo!, and a TEDx stage. Her signature keynote – “Where Soul Meets Success” – is an essential roadmap for leaders and organizations to redefine success in ways that celebrate humanity, well- being, and fulfillment. It's the post-pandemic antidote to burnout and seeking. She's based in Chicago (when not indulging her wanderlust) and is obsessed with mental health advocacy and the color orange. Marni welcomes Shelley Paxton to the Life Check Yourself studio where the duo discusses how to listen to yourself and navigate towards what your soul truly wants. Shelley is an author, a speaker and a change-maker. She helps people redefine their success. In this episode, Marni and Shelley talk about how to get out of something that makes you miserable. With the daily grind of life, and the pressure thrown at you from every direction, sometimes it's easier to just continue on the conventional track, to stick to the initial plan. And it ends up slowly eating at you, at your soul. * How to take it one step at a time * Don't wait out your pain * How to live your truth Is it time for a sabbatical? [00:40] It's a sabbatical in the large sense of the term, almost like a rebirth. When it seems like your current life, whether that's a job or otherwise, is dragging you down, where everything requires this magnanimous effort, it's time for a sabbatical. It's not a vacation, it's a journey to reconnect with yourself and your soul. I'm going to be the sole chief officer of my own damn life. And that was the beginning. S is for Shackles [53:20] In Shelley's Soul Framework, the S stands for shedding the shackles you should. And what that means is breaking free from the narratives, and the “shoulds” and “shouldn'ts” that you've told yourself define you. It's becoming aware of the narratives that you've built around your identity, that are influenced by culture, society, upbringing, expectations…and the list goes on. Whatever it is, we have these should, and these narratives. They come from this place of guilt, people pleasing and these cultural narratives that have been drilled into us. Especially for women, for a very, very long time. It's Value Over Validation [01:01] It's important to prioritize your own values over seeking external validation. Focus on what truly matters to you at your core. All these boxes of traditional success, that I was ticking, they were all external validation. They were all outside of me. You've heard of burnout, but ever heard of bore-out? Apparently, it's a leading cause of why people leave their jobs. I'm not talking about things feeling a bit drab. I'm talking about the loss of meaning in your work, and the adverse effects this can have on your mental and physical wellbeing. As you become more senior, maybe your days are full of admin, politics, and none of the juicy stuff that used to light you up. In today's episode you'll meet Kristi Turner, a former tech CMO, whose work stress was mainly due to boredom. Kristi took a pause from work, had a “Soulbbatical” (more on this in the episode), and found a new-found vigour to re-enter the corporate in a way that felt more aligned with her values. You'll also meet Shelley Paxton, former CMO of Harley Davidson and founder of the Soulbbatical, who gives you some techniques to tackle bore-out – no resignation letter required. At the peak of her 26-year marketing career and then CMO of Harley-freaking-Davidson – Shelley Paxton didn't vibe with view at the top of the corporate ladder. Where was the fulfillment she expected? Worse, it was sucking the joy out of her life—and the life out of her – to the point she didn't realize what she'd lost: a connection to her own soul. Shelley started Soulbbatical, the company, with the mission to liberate the souls of leaders and organizations by inspiring them to realize (and rebel for) their greatest purpose, possibility, and impact. As an ICF-certified coach, Shelley has worked with executives at Fortune 100 companies as well as fellow rebel soul individuals and entrepreneurs. In this episode you'll find out: How to connect to your soul desires, without needing to get that cosmic kick in the A$$. Why “fine” is a 4-letter word you should avoid at all costs. What the consequences are to being a Title . How to uncover who you are to start your own Soulbbatical. Coaching is about more than having a coaching business. For most of human history, it wasn't called coaching, it was called leadership. My guest on this episode, Shelley Paxton, has spent her entire career as a leader. Shelley is the former Chief Marketing Officer for Harley Davidson, one of the most iconic brands on the planet. She is wondering how she can craft a "funnel" for her business. However, I don't like the word funnel, especially for a rebel like Shelley. If you are crafting out a business and want to know what to put out as opportunities for people to work with you then this is really fun! Love. Rich PS. Maybe you're purchasing status markers, like red-bottomed shoes or the latest gadgets to signal your success (and hey, no judgement! I do it too!) Maybe the title and the pay reaffirm your identity. You tell yourself that “one day” you'll arrive at a certain paygrade or career milestone, and THEN you won't need the validation anymore. THEN success will feel different. Less empty and fleeting. Uh huh. I'm in conversation with Shelley Paxton, ex-Chief Marketing Officer of Harley Davidson, and Tracy Yates, ex-CEO of an 8-figure marketing agency, serving brands like Google and Amazon. They were success-FULL but felt hollow inside. What does it look like to start redefining success, decades into an established career? And how do you start weaning yourself off of external validation? You'll learn how both women did the inner work and loosened the grip of external validation. The best part? You can start playing with their ideas right away, without leaving your job. Links: Shelley Paxton's book, Soulbbatical. Shelley's TEDx talk. Shelley's website. Shelley on Instagram. Shelley Paxton is the Founder of Soulbbatical, a company she started with the mission to liberate the souls of leaders and organizations by inspiring them to realize (and rebel for) their greatest purpose, possibility, and impact. As an ICF-certified professional coach, Shelley works with executives at Fortune 100 companies as well as fellow rebel soul individuals and entrepreneurs. Shelley wrote the book Soulbbatical: A Corporate Rebel's Guide to Finding Your Best Life as a manifesto on breaking free from the traditional shoulds and should-nots of life and leadership. It's about rewriting the script of success—personally and professionally. At the height of Shelley's 26-year career as an accomplished marketing executive and global brand leader, she discovered that the view from the top of the corporate ladder lacked the fulfillment she expected. In fact, it was taking the joy out of her life—and the life out of her. Shelley realized that she had been playing by someone else's rules for so long that she didn't even realize what she'd lost: a connection to her own soul. It would take her own Soulbbatical for Shelley to get reacquainted with her purpose: to teach people how to rebel for who they are, what they want, and the impact they want to have in the world. This week we empower ourselves to find a connection to our soul and our own truth as we live our dreams. Shelley Paxton, Chief Soul Officer and author of Soulbbatical, joins us for a beautiful conversation about how learning to “surrender” is an important aspect of true success. Success in life should be measured from the inside, by listening to and following your soul. This conversation will begin to give us the tools we need that can lead to becoming successful versus being “success-empty”. Shelley Paxton spent 26 years as a highly regarded marketing and advertising executive stewarding some of the world's most iconic brands like Harley-Davidson, Visa, McDonald's, and AOL. In 2016 she walked away from the corporate world to nurture her soul and discover her purpose. She christened herself Chief Soul Officer and called the journey her Soulbbatical. It did more than change her life, it became her calling. In 2018, Shelley opened the doors of her own company with the mission to liberate the souls of leaders and organizations, by inspiring them to realize their greatest purpose and potential. Shelley's intention is to help her clients discover, as she did, a way of being that is aligned with their authentic self (soul) and deeply rooted in a commitment to living and leading courageously. As a certified professional coach, she works with individuals, entrepreneurs, and executives at Fortune 100 companies like Lowe's, Inc. and Mars, Inc.(4:50) What does surrender mean to Shelley and we begin our discussion around the power of it.(9:50) How can we embrace the idea of surrender without viewing it as a weakness or accepting defeat?(13:12) How does Shelley help people to embrace the idea of trust & surrender? She shared with us her own journey to learning how to embrace it.(22:00) We discuss about how to “dance with fear”, leaning into it so you can learn to control it.(28:40) What expressions/mantras has Shelley found herself embracing more often than others?(35:00) How do Shelley's old identities (like CMO at Harley) find their way into her current one as Chief Soul Officer?(44:50) A discussion about understanding who you are, at your core, and learn to love what you discover.(49:30) Chatting about “becoming Shelley Paxton” and talk about her successes and what the future holds for Soulbattical.Connect with Shelley Paxtonhttps://soulbbatical.com/Subscribe: Warriors At Work Podcasts Website: https://jeaniecoomber.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/986666321719033/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jeanie_coomber/Twitter: https://twitter.com/jeanie_coomber LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeanie-coomber-90973b4/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbMZ2HyNNyPoeCSqKClBC_w

Shelley Paxton had checked all the boxes. To the outside world, she had it all. Inside was a different story.Shelley ditched the big job and the big money to literally save her soul and wrote a book about the experience. Join Kimberly and Shelley as they discuss Soulbbattical.
“You can get to the top of a particular mountain and feel success-empty,” explains Shelley Paxton, speaker and author of Soulbattical: A Corporate Rebel's Guide to Finding Your Best Life. Shelley worked for many years as a marketing executive including a glamorous career as the Chief Marketing Officer of Harley-Davidson. However, while she may have looked extremely successful from the outside, inside she was experiencing full-fledged burnout. Five and a half years into her sexy motorcycle-riding, black-leather-wearing career, Shelley began to have a recurring nightmare that led her on a journey of meditation and soul-searching. After months of self-exploration, she realized that this dream was telling her that she was completely disconnected from her true self. She had aligned her idea of success with checking boxes on a list that didn't actually make her feel fulfilled. By leaving her marketing career behind and learning how to slow down and be present, Shelley was able to discover real success and leave her burnout behind. Tune into today's episode of FRIED. The Burnout Podcast for a conversation with Shelley Paxton about the meaning of success, asking for help, and connecting with your soul. Hear tips from Shelley on how to slow down and make time for yourself, so you can move from success-empty to success-FULL. Quotes • “In my quest to be this badass, trying to be all things to all people, all my boundaries fell. I was bending over backwards and people-pleasing, and I realized this has been a pattern in my life.” (05:08-05:21) • “Five and a half years in, I start having this nightmare… I am seeing the same thing night after night after night. It is ripping me out of my sleep and frankly, it's the universe waking me up to the fact that I have totally lost connection with my soul and with myself. After a lot of examination and exploration and seeing doctors and learning about slowing down and mindfulness and meditation, I start to realize and understand that what this dream is telling me is… my soul was malnourished and longing for attention, longing to be fed and loved and that I was living my dad's dream.” (05:56-06:55) • “Ultimately this thing called ‘success' was somebody else's definition of it. I was ticking all the boxes of traditional success when the majority of those – money and titles and accolades and material things – wasn't feeding me inside and wasn't truly connecting with me. You can get to the top of a particular mountain and feel success-empty. The whole world looks at you and goes, ‘Oh my God she has everything, look at her.' And you're going, ‘Oh my God, this is all just armor and it's spit-polished to a shine and I'm a hot fucking mess on the inside and I'm afraid to say anything because I have been taught that this is what success looks like.'” (06:57-07:57) • “You're not alone. We're in this together. More of us feel this way than I ever knew five years ago when I walked away from Harley. I truly thought I was alone.” (10:54-11:05) • “If I continue living as I am now, for the next three, five, ten years or more, am I moving toward who I want to become or further away?” (18:15-18:28) • “If you feel like this when you're 50, you're gonna have a short, miserable life. You're gonna be one of those people who slugs it through until retirement and dies on the day after she retires. Or you're not gonna make it that far. Is this the life you really want to be living? Do you want to feel this way? What I've realized is that success is a feeling. It's not a checklist.” (18:41-19:14) • “What if the most iconic brand I could ever represent is Shelley Paxton?” (19:42-19:48) • “The value of being present is noticing, getting curious. You see the little signs that the universe has been giving you along the way. It sounds cheesy and maybe it is cheesy, but I've come to love it…When I'm fully present, I am noticing what's being given to me at every moment and I am fully connected to myself and the people that I'm with.” (27:15-27:52) • “Boundaries over busyness. Boundaries over burnout…resentment is really a sign of a violated boundary.” (38:39-38:50) • “Success feels like I go to bed tired with a smile on my face. I go to bed tired with the knowledge that I don't feel empty, I feel full. I feel tired because I left it all on the field today. I showed up for this conversation, for my people, and for myself. That feels so incredible.” (42:16-42:44) Links https://soulbbatical.com/ https://www.instagram.com/soulbbatical/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/shelley-paxton-759163/ XOXO, C If you know that it's time to actually DO something about the burnout cycle you've been in for too long - book your free consult today: bit.ly/callcait Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Psst…listen up. You might think that successful folks who appear smugly (nay, gloriously) comfortable in their own skin, have somehow either: By-passed the squinchy not-enoughness that the rest of us stew in; OR Have found the holy grail, the tidy ten-step plan to free themselves from their supposed inadequacy. If you've ever scratched your head and wondered, “Hmm, how does someone actually ‘do the inner work?'”, today's episode is a peek behind the curtain. Enoughness isn't bestowed on us. It's something we choose, sometimes moment by moment. It's how we create ourselves. Shelley Paxton had a stellar corporate career, including a global role at Harley-Davidson. She went onto start the Soulbbatical movement (more later), wrote a best-selling book, and makes massive impact in the world. To boot, she has the coolest urban/industrial loft apartment. Is super successful Shelley free of miserable, less-than moments? Nope. We talk about the real-time becoming of our next-level selves. Shedding. Stripping down. Catching ourselves falling into old beliefs, and how we fish ourselves out. This episode is deliciously conversational, and I think you'll find your shoulders dropping two inches by the end. Most of us wake up every day and should all over ourselves. In fact we should all over ourselves all day every day. We rarely ever take a step to do the things we actually want to do. Instead, we do all the things we think we should do. What if we decided one day to stop the madness. To stop shoulding all over ourselves, and on everyone else, and pursue our own dreams along our own path. Shelley Paxton spent 26 years as one of the world's top marketing and advertising executives. She led iconic brands like Harley-Davidson, Visa, McDonald's, and AOL. But in 2016 she walked into her boss's office and declared she was mentally, emotionally, and physically sick from pursuing the goals and agendas of everyone else. She was "soul-sick." She left the corporate world to become the Chief Soul Officer of her own life and launched Soulbbatical, her movement to liberate the souls of one billion people by showing us that we have a choice in how we live our lives and nurture our souls. Before founding the company in 2018, she served as the Senior Vice President of Global Business Development and President of AAR Africa for AAR. Cheryle joins me today to share why she is rebelling for women to rediscover their grit and grace and how she is helping women to understand the need to pair grit with grace in our lives. She shares the defining moment in her life when she realized practicing grace was a crucial element of reaching her full potential and how she discovered grit and grace go hand-in-hand. She explains what it truly means to be a “free agent” - to run your career on your own terms, be pro-active instead of reactive, and take your career ‘by the horns’ to create your own path to success. She also explains her concept on the “DNA of Brilliance” and what it could look like to practice grace every day, in everything you do. “Grit alone ensures that you survive. But we’re here to do more than just survive; we want to thrive. Grace helps us to thrive.” - Cheryle Jackson This week on Rebel Souls: Cheryle’s journey of pivots and how the Grit + Grace movement began How Cheryle discovered and developed her grit and resiliency The price of having the grit and tenacity to keep going Why Cheryle believes losing the U.S. Senate primary election was a blessing in disguise How Cheryle battled breast cancer and dealt with divorce while starting her business and how her experiences shined a light on the importance of grit, grace, and radical self-care When Cheryle realized grit and grace go hand-in-hand How Cheryle helped women pivot during the COVID-19 pandemic How Cheryle practices grace to stay connected to her soul What the “Grace Practice” is and the three actions that create our lives Identifying the triggers that cause you to fall out of grace and alignment with your soul Using your emotions as a tool to stay in alignment with your soul Cheryle’s concept of the “DNA of Brilliance” Why waiting for new opportunities to come your way is detrimental to your success Choosing to be a ‘free agent’ and why the key to being a free agent, beyond choosing yourself, is service-driven networking Understanding what’s driving your decisions How Cheryle is rebelling for change, social justice, and civil rights Resources Mentioned: Book: Broken Open: How Difficult Times Can Help Us Grow by Elizabeth Lesser Book: Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance by Angela Duckworth Connect with Cheryle Jackson: Cheryle Jackson Website PIVOT! Does it make any sense that most people work nonstop for 40 years so they can simply enjoy the last few years of their life? Shelley Paxton would argue that your soul deserves better. She believes that everyone deserves to b successful, not success-empty - and a life that's more authentic, courageous and purposeful. Erin Hatzikostas sits down with the rebel of all rebels, Shelley Paxton, the former Chief Marketing Officer for Haley Davidson. She since has left and started a Soulbbatical movement. Shelley discusses her inspirational father, how he went from meager beginnings to a CEO at multiple companies, and how even his mentality while battling illness in his later life was an inspiration. Erin asks Shelley to talk about her younger life, how she was a rebel living the classic sex drugs and rock 'n' roll lifestyle...and also that time she drove into a lake. Shelley talks about how she left college and started a great job at a huge marketing agency, moonlighting as part of an improv comedy act...only to ask for a sabbatical at the age of 25. This sabbatical had a huge impact on her mindset, personal, and professional life, leading her to constantly question what do we NEED to do? When SHOULD we work? WHERE should we work? Should we save for 40 years so we can enjoy the last 5? Erin talks about her 50% rule when trying anything, whether at home or at work - 50% of what you should do, and 50% of how you do it your own way. Shelley talks about pushing your boundaries and living a life that is true to you. She also opens up about a dark time in her life when she wasn't talking about her feelings and didn't think asking for help was an ok thing to do. She talks openly about her attempted suicide, and what she's learned from looking back on that period of her life.
