In this compelling episode, host Duane Osterlind sits down with Mo Edjlali, founder of The Mindful Leader and author of the groundbreaking book "Open MBSR: Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction - Reimagining the Future of Mindfulness." Mo sounds an important alarm about a rarely discussed topic in the wellness world: how guided meditations, when overused or misapplied, can actually cause harm. This conversation dives deep into Mo's personal transformation from a high-pressure tech entrepreneur to a mindfulness advocate, and his critical examination of the modern mindfulness movement. Mo doesn't shy away from controversial topics, exploring issues like power dynamics, Buddhist entanglements, rigid frameworks, spiritual materialism, and the commoditization of ancient practices.Drawing on 15 years of experience in the field, Mo offers a transformative framework rooted in open collaboration, collective wisdom, and genuine secular integrity. This is a nuanced conversation that challenges listeners to think critically about mindfulness while honoring its profound potential for healing and growth.Key TakeawaysMindfulness requires balance: The nine attitudes of mindfulness can become harmful when taken to extremes without dialectical thinkingCommunity is essential: Practicing mindfulness in isolation misses the powerful healing potential of collective practiceTransparency matters: The field needs honest conversations about Buddhist influences and commercial interestsCritical thinking strengthens practice: Questioning and debate enhance rather than diminish the mindfulness movementSmall steps create change: Even in dark moments, simple actions like making your bed can be the foundation for healingAbout Mo EdjlaliMo Edjlali is the founder of The Mindful Leader and author of "Open MBSR: Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction - Reimagining the Future of Mindfulness." With a background in computer engineering and entrepreneurship, Mo discovered mindfulness during a personal crisis in 2008-2009. If you're overwhelmed, burned out or just trying to make it through the day without falling apart, this episode is for you.More info, resources & ways to connect - https://www.tacosfallapart.com/podcast-live-show/podcast-guests/courtney-schulnickIn this episode, I sat down with Courtney Schulnick to talk all about mindfulness and how it actually fits into messy, busy, real life! Courtney spent almost 20 years as a high-pressure litigator at a major law firm in Philly. The work was demanding and stressful. When she had her first child, she managed. When her family grew and life threw her fertility struggles and long sleepless nights, she kept pushing through. But she was burning out. Badly. That's when her therapist suggested mindfulness. At first, Courtney was skeptical. The idea of committing to a two-and-a-half-hour class every week, plus daily home practice, felt impossible. But eventually, she realized something had to give. She signed up for an MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) course and it completely shifted how she moved through the world. The stress didn't go away, but her relationship to it did. She started feeling more present, more grounded, more in control. She not only learned to function better at work, she learned to show up for her life.We talked about how mindfulness helped her navigate the pressures of law while raising three boys, and how it ultimately bought her another ten years in a career she had nearly burned out of. She now teaches MBSR herself and helps high-performing professionals find balance without sacrificing their ambition.Courtney broke down what mindfulness actually is: moment-to-moment awareness, without judgment. It's not about clearing your mind or sitting in silence for hours. It can be as simple as noticing your feet on the floor or being fully present while brushing your teeth. And it works. There's a growing body of scientific evidence showing that mindfulness reduces anxiety, depression and even boosts immune function. She also tackled the idea that mindfulness is just another luxury or self-care chore. It's not. It's a way of being, not a task to check off a list. And yes, even busy people can do it. You don't need to dedicate hours to see the benefits. A few minutes a day can make a difference. We also talked about how mindfulness intersects with trauma. Courtney was clear: mindfulness is powerful, but it's not for everyone at every moment. If someone is navigating trauma or deep depression, it's important to be mindful about mindfulness (pun intended) and to have professional support in place.Throughout the conversation, Courtney's warmth and honesty stood out. She shared personal stories, like stealing Snickers bars as a kid, and how her kids now remind her to slow down. We laughed about egg cups, Instagram reels and the ongoing challenge of being present as a parent in a world that never stops pinging. If you've been curious about mindfulness, or if you're overwhelmed and looking for a way to show up more fully in your own life, this episode is a great place to start.

Are you nurturing and advocating for yourself? In this episode, I talk with Nadine Pinede about dimming your inner critic to a whisper and: • Learning to advocate for yourself when you have an invisible illness and/or are a person of color • Soothing pain and discomfort through MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) and Self-Compassion practices • Seeing yourself and others for who they truly are, not the groups they belong to • Channeling grief and pain into creativity and writing • Slowing down to see how everything is connected Nadine is the daughter of Haitian exiles who were forced to leave their homeland because of a dictatorship. Her mother was no doubt sharing enthralling tales of Haitian history and family lore when Nadine was in the womb. Nadine is an author, poet, editor, educator, and translator who created her own interdisciplinary major at Harvard and then continued on to Oxford on a Rhodes Scholarship. She also has an MFA in fiction and poetry and holds a PhD from Indiana University. Nadine's upcoming debut novel from Candlewick Press, When the Mapou Sings, is dedicated to her first storyteller, her mother, who encouraged her to write her own stories. In this podcast episode, we're exploring Somatic Dance as a form of movement therapy. My guest, Anika Voy, is a trained psychotherapist who helps her clients and students find authentic self-expression and healing through dance. Anika explains that “the dance floor is a microcosm of our life,” and describes how creative movement can be used as a tool of discovery, as well as self-expression. We talk about the differences between dance as a performance art vs. dance as a somatic therapy, or a form of personal practice or mindful movement. She also describes certain obstacles and misconceptions about dance related to religion, ideas about sexuality, being a “good” dancer, or associating dance with clubbing or substance use. You'll hear about: how movement reveals traits innate to a person's physicality, as well as their conditioned habits dance as an opportunity to move with emotions and give them space using movement, footwork, and music to invoke certain energies like power, groundedness, lightness, or fluidity the balance between structured dance movements and the freedom to improvise. And, Anika also shares some of her backstory, including how she discovered somatic dance therapy during a period of severe depression. After completing her studies to become a therapist, she took the inspiring leap (as a single mother!) to relocate from Berlin to Costa Rica, following the authentic calling she discovered through her healing dance practice. ------- Guest Bio: Anika Voy left the urban jungle of Berlin six years ago to move to the tropical rainforests of Latin America. Her personal journey into self-discovery began with a severe episode of depression in her 20's. She realized she was living someone else's life and started searching for answers. That search led to dance therapy, where her lifelong love for movement and her growing passion for psychology merged. She first encountered dance therapy in 2011 as a patient in a psychosomatic rehabilitation clinic. It sparked a deeper interest in movement and its positive impact on our well-being, which led to Pilates, yoga, and mindfulness practices like MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) and MBCT (Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy). In 2017, she became a certified Alternative Psychotherapist, and in 2019 she received her certification as a Systemic Dance Therapist. She also had the opportunity to lead a project at the Taller de Danza in San José, integrating dance therapy methodologies into performance at Costa Rica's largest institution for dance and theater. Today she works independently, offering monthly Urban Somatic Dance sessions and 1:1 Somatic Dance Mentoring, using movement as a profound tool for self-discovery and growth. To learn more about Anika's work, visit her website at https://www.living-in-motion.com/, follow her on Instagram at @anikavoy_living_in_motion, or look her up on Spotify to find playlists for your own dance explorations. ------ In this episode, I also mentioned the Gentle Change Collective, which is a new offering from a previous podcast guest, Andrew Lang. (Check out Ep. 69 with Andrew, “Unmasking the Inner Critic.”) The Gentle Change Collective is a mentoring group for people who are interested in social change, but aren't really sure how to take action in a way that feels like a fit. This program starts in February, and it could be a really good way to go from hopelessly scrolling to finding meaningful actions that make sense for you AND make a difference… https://www.andrewglang.com/gentlechange?affiliate_code=2bb37b ------- I also wanted to send some extra love to Los Angeles in this episode. The Foothills area of LA (near Altadena) was my home for many years. I still have a lot of friends there and so many fond memories of the place itself. It's been about a week since the devastating wildfires began, and support is still very much needed. Rebuilding will be a long term process. So, I thought I would share a few of my favorite local organizations, informed by deep ties both my husband and I have from working in the non-profit sector there. Pasadena Community Foundation https://pasadenacf.org/ - Community foundations are in an excellent position to provide long-term support (as well as quick emergency funding), due to their existing relationships to a variety of organizations serving the local area. PCF grants go to vetted organizations focused on social services, housing, senior programs, healthcare, education, animal welfare, the arts, and the environment. For more immediate needs, there are many (many) GoFundMe pages raising funds for families and businesses who have lost their home and/or livelihood in the fires. Simply search under the “emergency” category on GoFundMe.com. And, I also recommend the California Fire Foundation, which supports victims of fire, as well as the brave and tireless firefighters. Donations go towards cash cards that are distributed on the scene, in the moment of shock when someone loses their house to fire. (This helps people pay for essentials like hotel and food right away.) The California Fire Foundation also has a fund to support firefighters and their families, because this heroic job is extremely dangerous. Firefighters risk their lives and future health to help others, and we cannot thank or support them enough. -------- Feel free to reach out through my website with any episode requests, topics you'd like to hear about, or guest interview suggestions. You can also connect with me on Instagram or Threads at @addie_movedtomeditate (for mindfulness, movement, pictures of Pacific Northwest nature, crocheting projects, and my adorable kitty, Mustache).

My life has been intertwined with PTSD/Trauma and the military. Not only am I the daughter of a Vietnam Veteran, I was also married to an active duty member (and Iraq/Afghanistan Veteran) for over 20 years. For 3 years, I volunteered at the Warrior Transition Battalion at Fort Riley, Kansas providing yoga therapy, meditation, and other holistic treatments to the soldiers, family members, and staff. After seeing others struggle, and having my own personal struggles with trauma/PTSD, I was inspired to create the Trauma Healing Yoga Therapy Program. As a Yoga Therapist and founder of the Trauma Healing Yoga Therapy Program, I guide others in the use of effective, science based yoga therapy and other holistic techniques for the management/healing of symptoms relating to PTSD and trauma for people who want to control their PTSD - not allow it to control them. Recently, I have focused my efforts to working with women who have been sexually traumatized to help them heal their PTSD (and other trauma related issues) with yoga therapy. As a 2x rape survivor, I intimately understand the needs these women face, and help them navigate their healing journeys. I earned my 200 RYT, 500 RYT and was awarded my Certification in Yoga Therapy from the International Association of Yoga Therapy. Additionally, I have completed a 120 Hour YogaFit Warriors training and the MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) online course through the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Currently a student with the Phoenix Rising School of Yoga Therapy, I'm learning another approach to utilizing yoga to help release trauma from the body. I work with people with all types of physical conditions, however, I specialize in working with those suffering from PTSD, TBI's and all trauma-related issues and have been for over the past 5 years. Anissa and I talk about PTSD from trauma and how those memories live in us and return unbidden. Most importantly, Anissa shares how to process that trauma and how to walk a healing journey. Anissa and I each share personal stories of sexual assault and triggered traumatic memories as ways to really dig into Anissa's processes surrounding healing. She explains where trauma lives in the body and brain, how it might look physically, and how PTSD draws on those memories. She details the differences between yoga and yoga therapy and links the physicality of yoga to the ability to heal the body's trauma. It's a tough but rewarding conversation today that sheds necessary light on a topic all too familiar to us but not talked about enough.About Anissa HudakAnissa's life has been intertwined with PTSD/Trauma and the military. Not only is she the daughter of a Vietnam Veteran, she was also married to an active duty member (and Iraq/Afghanistan Veteran) for over 20 years. For 3 years, she volunteered at the Warrior Transition Battalion at Fort Riley, Kansas providing yoga therapy, meditation, and other holistic treatments to the soldiers, family members, and staff. After seeing others struggle, and having her own personal struggles with trauma/PTSD, she was inspired to create the Trauma Healing Yoga Therapy Program. As a Yoga Therapist and founder of the Trauma Healing Yoga Therapy Program, she guides others in the use of effective, science based yoga therapy and other holistic techniques for the management/healing of symptoms relating to PTSD and trauma for people who want to control their PTSD - not allow it to control them.Recently, she has focused her efforts to working with women who have been sexually traumatized to help them heal their PTSD (and other trauma related issues) with yoga therapy. As a 2x rape survivor, she intimately understand the needs these women face, and helps them navigate their healing journeys.Anissa earned her 200 RYT, 500 RYT and was awarded her Certification in Yoga Therapy from the International Association of Yoga Therapy. Additionally, she has completed a 120 Hour YogaFit Warriors training and the MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) online course through the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Currently a student with the Phoenix Rising School of Yoga Therapy, Anissa is learning another approach to utilizing yoga to help release trauma from the body. She works with people with all types of physical conditions, but specializes in working with those suffering from PTSD, TBI's and all trauma-related issues and has been for over the past 5 years.Contact Anissa Hudak, C-IA YT; 500 RYTFounder of the Trauma Healing Yoga Therapy ProgramWebsite | Facebook | Instagram | Email | LinkedIn__Resources discussed in this episode:EMDR—Learn more about Dr Michelle Tubman and Wayza Health:Website: www.wayzahealth.comDownload my free Food Freedom Roadmap hereFollow me on Facebook and Instagram
Flowing East and West: The Perfectly Imperfect Journey to a Fulfilled Life
On the surface, it seemed like Shelly Tygielski had it all: she had achieved her goal of becoming a senior executive before her 40th birthday, had a wide circle of friends and a loving family. But what no one knew was that she would have panic attacks on her way into work, and she felt adrift even as she was achieving everything she thought she wanted. To counteract these difficult feelings, Shelly turned to mindfulness to help keep herself grounded. What started as self preservation in the form of meditation at her local beach each Sunday, turned into a movement, and eventually a book: Sit Down to Rise Up. Listen in to hear Shelly's perfectly imperfect journey, her strong belief that it is only through proximity that we can bridge the divide between people, and how the intersection of that belief with the onset of COVID-19 led her to found Pandemic of Love. About: After nearly 20 years in Corporate America, holding executive positions leading public and privately held companies, Shelly Tygielski decided to stop following the expected path and start following her lifelong passion – mindfulness and meditation – and began to fuse this passion with her purpose – community organization and ensuring equity, social justice and access to wellbeing for all. At the heart of Shelly's practice is a fierce justice warrior and social activist. She combines her pragmatic business skills with the tenets of mediation and mindfulness to make the world a better place. Shelly is deeply involved in offering trauma-informed healing practices to communities affected by gun violence and mass shootings and has led fully funded retreats for survivors and victims' families representing Parkland, Pittsburgh, Las Vegas, Aurora, Columbine and more. She was featured on the cover of Mindful Magazine® in June 2019 for her work in this space. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, On March 14th, 2020, at the dawn of the COVID-19 pandemic, Shelly posted two simple Google forms online. One read “Get Help” the other “Give Help”. The next morning, she was shocked to find hundreds of requests from both sides of the equation. She began directly matching those in need with patrons willing to help them meet their needs and the Pandemic of Love movement was born. Those few hundred requests grew to thousands, which grew to over 600,000 people matched within six months. Today Pandemic of Love boasts nearly 4000 volunteers worldwide and has directly exchanged nearly $100 million in donations and has connected over 3 million people. This work will continue well beyond the pandemic and Shelly is committed to formalizing mutual aid in communities across the world. Shelly was honored by CNN Heroes in 2020. She is also the author of the book “Sit Down To Rise Up: How Radical Self-Care Can Change the World” which was honored as a Gold winner of the Nautilus Book Award and a finalist for the Fall 2021 Big Idea Book Club. Shelly is certified in MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction). She is a certified Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute (founded at Google over a decade ago) teacher. Her contemplations and lessons shared freely over social media have gained tens of thousands of followers, and she was recently referred to as one of the most “Powerful Women in Mindfulness” by mindful.org. She holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Miami and a master's degree from Columbia University. She is currently pursuing her doctorate in Philanthropic Leadership at the Lilly School of Philanthropy at Indiana University. Did you ever find yourself at a point where you couldn't let the past go, and stress and judgment took over your life? I'll tell you a secret; you are not alone. Sometimes life puts us through difficult situations, and our bodies' first response is to react to it, find a solution, and move forward. We are so conditioned and patterned to constantly be moving and doing things, getting stuff done, that it can be challenging to take a moment to stop, be present and breathe. This is when learning to practice mindfulness can make a difference in our lives.Mindfulness is the essential human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we're doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what's happening around us. Mindfulness is a quality that every human being already possesses; it's not something you have to conjure up. You just have to learn how to access it.In this episode of The Dream, The Date & The Broken Bra, I am joined by John Abate. John is trained and qualified to teach MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) through the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Center for Mindfulness and Integrative Studies. He teaches Mindfulness and Meditation workshops throughout the country to individuals, groups, and corporations through his organization, Mindful Foundations. Throughout this episode, John shares his personal path of discovering his mindfulness practice, the bike accident that changed his life, and the best ways to cultivate a daily self-care practice. I can't wait for you to be inspired by this conversation. In this Episode, You Will Learn:John's move from California to Connecticut (05:14)John's lifechanging bike accident (20:33)Why John decided to teach Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (23:04)Be present without judgment (35:42)Live with grace (49:51)Slow down and not react (52:45)John's MBSR 8 weeks course (1:01:02)Connect with John Abate:WebsiteMindfulness InstagramPersonal InstagramFacebookLet's Connect:FacebookInstagramEmail Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. So many of us go through perimenopause at an extremely busy time of life. Many of us have careers, young or teenage children and ageing parents. Often we find ourselves pulled in all directions, often leaving us feeling run ragged and stressed out, making our perimenopause symptoms even worse. On top of all that, fluctuating hormones at perimenopause, which can cause increased anxiety and low mood, means it's more important than ever to look after our minds. In this episode I talk to mindfulness and meditation teacher Emma Reynolds. Emma is trained in MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) and passionate about sharing mindfulness and meditation techniques which help us become calmer, more present and ultimately more in control of our thoughts and actions. In this conversation you will hear: How mindfulness helped Emma at the age of 41 after she had her first baby. A short mindfulness practice. The difference between mindfulness and meditation. How mind wandering is an essential part of a meditation practice. How we can use mindfulness in stressful situations. How mindfulness gives us back control at perimenopause.Simple ways you can include mindfulness into your daily life. How having the right mindset is the key to a positive perimenopause. You can find Emma at https://www.mbsr-mindfulness.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mbsr_mindfulness/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/MindfulnessBasedStressReductionLinked in: https://www.linkedin.com/in/emma-reynolds-mbsrmindfulness/You can contact me at: https://www.instagram.com/pollywarrencoaching/ and https://www.pollywarren.com/

"To be able to respond rather than to react is a massive shift in the way with which we communicate, how we see ourselves in the world, and how we can become more of an open space for others."-John AbateJohn Abate's mantra is basic and relatable in that our true nature is not lived out from the workings of the mind, but rather from the place of the heart or soul. In this episode, meditation teacher and author, Shelly Tygielski talks of her personal journey leading toward the core insight from her new book Sit Down and Rise Up that the “secret of life is this: show up.” Join us for this conversation about the role mindfulness practice and creating community can play in safeguarding our well-being during these challenging times as we emerge from COVID19. Shelly describes how she built a “pandemic of love” that has resulted in not only millions of dollars of philanthropic aid but, more importantly, created a community of meaningful connection between those giving and receiving. About Shelly: After spending nearly 20 years in Corporate America, immersed in Fortune 1000 organizations and holding executive positions leading public and privately held companies, Shelly decided to stop following the expected path and start following her lifelong passion – mindfulness and meditation. Her journey began by teaching free meditation classes Sunday morning on the sands of Hollywood Beach, Florida. What started as a group of 12 friends blossomed into a community of more than 15,000 in a matter of two years – a diverse mix of souls that proclaimed itself “The Sand Tribe”. The class is always free. The warm welcome is for anyone who shows up. Shelly's work is built around one simple precept: No Barrier To Entry. She wants everyone to have access to the joys and health benefits of meditation and mindfulness. Not just those with means. At the heart of Shelly's practice is a fierce justice warrior and social activist. Shelly combines the pragmatic business skills she learned in the corporate world with the tenets of mediation and mindfulness to make the world a better place. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, once again Shelly rose to the occasion. On March 14th, 2020, at the dawn of the crisis, she posted two simple Google forms online. One read “Get Help” the other “Give Help”. The next morning, she was shocked to find hundreds of requests from both sides of the equation. She began directly matching those in need with patrons willing to help them meet their needs and the Pandemic of Love movement was born. Those few hundred requests grew to thousands; which grew to over 600,000 people matched within six months. To date, Pandemic of Love boasts nearly 1000 volunteers worldwide and has directly exchanged nearly $40 million in donations. It has been featured on international newsfeeds and network television, including CNN, BBC and The Kelly Clarkson Show. It has enjoyed incredible support from influencers such as Debra Messing, Chelsea Handler, Maria Shriver, Busy Phillips and Kristen Bell. Pandemic of Love continues to match those in need during this crisis directly with patrons who can help through their grassroots mutual aid platform. This work will continue well beyond the pandemic and Shelly is committed to formalizing mutual aid in communities across the world. Shelly has been an organizer and speaker for the Women's March. She works to support organizations such as March For Our Lives, Black Lives Matter, indigenous tribes such as the Navajo and Hopi, and other groups committed to social justice and driving real change. In doing so, she's also seen the toll that activism can take on people. The exhaustion. The let downs. Even feelings of failure and hopelessness. That's why a big part of what Shelly teaches today is self-care. She believes that – in Audre Lorde's words – “self-care is an act of resistance” unto itself because the only way to make change is to maintain your energy, health and mental wellbeing. And the only way to achieve that is through the building of communities of care. Shelly shares her methods of self-care in her upcoming book titled “Sit Down To Rise Up” which will be available in the Fall of 2021. She's also recorded a series of workshops with Recorded Books, available on Audible, including a series on “Self-Care for Turbulent Times.” Shelly is a student of the Shambhala Buddhist tradition and is certified in MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction). She is also an in-process certified Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute (founded at Google over a decade ago) teacher. Her contemplations and lessons shared freely over social media have gained tens of thousands of followers, and she was recently referred to as one of the most “Powerful Women in Mindfulness” by mindful.org. Shelly holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Miami and a Master's Degree from Columbia University. You can find Shelley here: Facebook , LinkedIn , Twitter , Amazon
