The Book Leads - Episode 71: Dr. Bridget Cooper (Cannon) & Unflappable: How Smart People Quit Overthinking, Ditch the Drama, & Thrive at Work This is my second episode with cage-rattler, prolific author, and leadership advisor Dr. B. For those only meeting Bridget for the first time in this episode, she walks me through her career journey, from empowering her coaching clients to that same work taking on even greater meaning when she experienced life-altering changes after a traumatic motor vehicle accident. This conversation speaks to how our past is impacting our present and future. We need to heal and reconcile correctly, most importantly for ourselves, before we can really move forward. And so much bullshit from our past gets in our way today. Yes, they are tools, and yes, they serve a purpose. But when they toxify what we're trying to do, they become bullshit. We can design what we choose to do with those past traumas and disruptions. But most of us never take the time to look back and really see what's what. Bridget provides so many tools in this book -- and in her previous publications -- to tap into the best of ourselves, a part we typically let fall away. Conversation Highlights When it comes to traumatic moments..."how dare that moment take away one more moment of our life?" "Trauma is an interruption of what we were put here to experience…how we were formed was to see only beauty, feel only inclusion, have only love…anything shy of that, leaves marks." Intent vs. Impact Referenced "If you never heal what hurt you, you'll bleed on people who didn't cut you." — Yehuda Berg Mentioned or Applicable Books The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing by Bessel van der Kolk Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don't Know by Adam Grant The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom by Don Miguel Ruiz Radical Candor: Be a Kick-Ass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity by Kim Scott Who Not How: The Formula to Achieve Bigger Goals Through Accelerating Teamwork By Dan Sullivan The MAIN QUESTION underlying my conversation with Bridget is, Which tools do you have at your disposal to make your way through (and heal from) the obstacles, challenges, and traumas of your life? About Dr. B. Dr. B a cage rattler who helps teams and leaders think and communicate more clearly and strategically so they can work and navigate problems proactively and effectively. She works with clients to overcome the attitudes, tactics, and patterns that derail their success through coaching, corporate consulting, and leading workshops that guide and inspire people to live more authentic, peaceful, and powerful lives. TEDx speaker and best-selling author of seven books on communication, conflict, change, and empowerment (including the 2023 toolkit, "Unflappable”), her mission is to change the world, one life at a time. Dr. B volunteers for Junior Achievement, Lasagna Love, The Miss America Organization, Connecticut Children's Medical Center, and various other charities near and dear to her heart. Dr. B's been with me on the series before when in Episode 24 we covered her book Pain Rebel: How We Take Our Power Back. That was in April of 2022…we're in October of 2023…a year and a half ater. Welcome to the ManMade Podcast This Podcast is with Shawn Helvey and Adam Thorne. Shawn is a licensed behavioral health counselor and Adam is a graduate student in behavioral health counseling. They've known each other for over 25 years and talk every week about the trials and tribulations of life.   Ah, the art of being unflappable—a skill often acquired after decades of spilling coffee on white shirts, navigating the chaotic aisles of toy stores during holiday sales, or enduring blind dates set up by overly enthusiastic relatives. As we embark on the roller coaster called life, we realize it isn't just about holding on tight, but mastering the poker face while you're being tossed upside down. Many claim they've discovered the secret to emotional mastery, only to be foiled by a Wi-Fi outage during their favorite show's climax. But over time, through the treacherous valleys of unexpected plot twists and the peaks of "Why is this happening to me?" moments, one learns to take a deep breath, muster a smile, and remember that even if today's turmoil is like a squirrel in your pants (Shawn does not care for squirrel's) , tomorrow promises the serenity of a sleeping cat on your lap. Remember: life's too short to lose your cool, but just long enough to learn how not to.   Some resources that may be useful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5vdybjMMrk  Contact us at: getmanmadepodcast@gmail.com

In a very frank interview with Radio Cycling's Chris Marshall-Bell, Israel-PremierTech team owner Sylvan Adams explains why four-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome didn't merit a place in their Tour de France line-up and says that the British rider hasn't fulfilled the hopes IPT had for him when he signed an extremely lucrative multi-year contract three years ago. "He's supposed to be our leader at the Tour de France and he's not even here, so no I couldn't say he's value for money, no," Adams declares. While stating that he has the utmost respect for Froome and his racing achievements, Adams compares the seven-time Grand Tour victor to basketball all-time great Michael Jordan during his final season in the NBA, stating, "Father Time spares no athlete." Adams goes on to admit, "My idea was, ‘Wow, we're going to have somebody to be relevant for the GC at the Tour de France,' and that hasn't happened.”   We have the full audio of Adams on Froome.ALSO...Movistar boss Eusebio Unzue tells us that the Spanish team is aiming to rekindle its great days of the past by partnering with a new secondary sponsor from 2024, which will boost their budget to the extent that they should be able to compete on a more level footing with the dominant Grand Tour teams. Unzue also touches on the heavily rumoured signing of Ineos Grenadier Carlos Rodríguez, saying he'd love to have the hugely talented young Spaniard in Movistar's ranks. Could there be a new "tridente"?We get a Danish perspective on Tour de France yellow jersey and defending champion Jonas Vingegaard from former racer Michael Rasmussen. Now a member of the Tour's press pack, Rasmussen offers an insight into Vingegaard's personality and roots. He also says that this Tour is threatening to swing away from the Jumbo-Visma rider because there appears to be no terrain ahead where he can gain time on arch-rival Tadej Pogačar, and that the pendulum is swinging the Slovene's way.We also get an insight into the Jumbo-Visma team from their former star Tom Dumoulin. He tells us that that the Dutch outfit must keep faith in their tactical approach and suggests too that they would struggle to win the Tour if Wout van Aert did actually have to leave the race to attend the birth of his second child, as the Belgian was incorrectly rumoured to be doing just a couple of days ago.  And finally, in our Coffee Beans round-up of news and gossip...- Tom Pidcock can podium, Ellingworth tells us- Bora heavily linked with a sprinter - but it's not Wout van Aert!- Mark Renshaw says it's too early to know whether Cav will return  - ASO staff unhappy with the Tour mascot  Support the show

We then dive into the uncanny valley of console hyper-realism, go deep into God of War Ragnarök, how accelerated technology is now, and some thoughts on ChatGPT, AI art, and the futility of trying to predict the future. Hear why he's bearish on AR, and bullish on VR for the entertainment value, plus the way it's changed how we interact with each other at times. Towards the end we talk about a game cancellation that taught him how to be a compassionate leader, the importance of an open dialogue with your team when in a position of authority, the genius of The Last of Us, other game licensed content, Halo 2 Double Team, pizza, and accepting that nothing is ever final.  Bio: Ray McCaffrey is the Executive Producer at Steel Wool Studios, an independent studio based in Oakland, CA. Today's guest is Koleen Roach, a dear friend, a giving person, and an incredibly strategic and socially considerate human being! She shares the best originating advice she received from a mentor was to remain "unflappable". Be strong, solid, and flexible to be able to serve as a leader for others. Recently I experienced this first hand as she planned and executed an event for over 1000 people. Her approach was content, joyous, and present. She not only knew her participants but also their family members. She offered extra gestures to ensure everyone was comfortable. Even when things didn't go as hoped, she remained UNFLAPPABLE. We discuss: -Growing up shy and realizing that not talking to people did not provide benefit to anyone -While learning from books, she also approaches learning from life similarly... don't make the same mistake twice, learn from experiences, and then turn the page. There is so much more to learn from future situations and future chapters. -Taking risks, lacking fear, having confidence, and course correcting -Accepting and listening to others to help them become better and grow -Learning to deal with the hard stuff, the conflict, the challenges, and THEN LEARNING HOW TO MOVE FORWARD Koleen Roach is the Director of Meetings and Conference Management at St. Paul-based Securian Financial Group.
