TIP 2145 - Breastfeeding and Stress

Listen to today's podcast... I thought getting pregnant was stressful.  Feeding my baby was even more stressful.  It was very clear after 2 weeks that my little boy was starving and as a new mom, I was horrified. Deemed a ‘failure to thrive' baby.  He was so hungry that he could barely keep awake.  I wasn't producing enough milk to nourish my own child. At this point I thought I was a failure.  My dad, who was a dairy farmer, said later that if I had been one of his milking cows, I would have been turned to steak. Humourous now…certainly not then. I now look at this tall, athletic, muscular man and it is hard to believe the rough start we had together.  He is healthy and that is the ultimate goal. Breastfeeding is a healthy choice But the pressure to nurse your child should never be so great that it makes a mother feel like a failure if they can't make it happen. Take One Action Today To Build Your #Resiliency!  So Here are today's Tips For Building Resiliency and Celebrating National Breastfeeding Awareness Week: Nursing a baby is natural.  Help moms to feel comfortable when it comes to feeding their child. Don't assume that a parent who is bottle-feeding is doing so by choice.  Be supportive of all of the options that are available to parents. If you are expecting a baby or if you have a newborn, rely on the people around you for support. And finally, Supermom status is a lousy goal and impossible to reach.  If we could all learn this early on it really would save us a tonne of stress. If you like today's wellness tips, let me know. Then after some feedback for Last Night In Soho, the guys set about reviewing Dashcam (2021) which is not to be confused with Dashcam (2021) and in the process learn a lot about Adobe Premier and Audition plugins... Better Conversations with Sehaam Cyrene
Thom Langford on being serious and humourous | BCP003

Better Conversations with Sehaam Cyrene

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 1, 2019 50:30

“Security isn’t funny but it can be fun” and “information security doesn’t have to be hard” the mantras of my guest today Thom Langford - your virtual Chief Information Security Officer with a big, friendly but serious personality. Thom is always ready to engage, he does a combination of being serious in the same breath as pointing out truths and irony with humour and dry wit - not an easy mix to pull off, and he admits that, until people get to know him, occasionally some people don’t get his brand of fun or might find it intimidating. As the former Chief Information Security Officer of Publicis Groupe, Thom was responsible for all aspects of information security risk and compliance as well as managing the Groupe Information Security Programme. He now consults and does speaking gigs at information security conferences around the world. His conversation style is to listen deeply and then talk as he thinks, and he’s very comfortable correcting his own words - a verbal version of typing a sentence, deleting back a few words and then retyping something better, more accurate. What came through strongly in our conversation is how he’s watched others manage people and what he’s learned about his own experiences managing people. Things like speaking truthfully and not shying away from giving bad news while still being thoughtful, compassionate and supportive. He believes in the power of a face-to-face discussion and the eye-ball to eye-ball handshake to create credibility and trust where an email is more likely to create distance and wiggle room for excuses about why work hasn’t been delivered as agreed. When I asked him what’s influenced his conversation style, it’s his need for honesty. He talked about how being a public speaker has taught him to be more comfortable when receiving a compliment not just because it’s validating the other person’s opinion and it's the polite and gracious thing to do but also because he sees it as a gateway for a more useful, in-depth exchange - it invites further conversation and connection. He believes that not only do experiences like this grow you but they also generate respect from others towards you. If you’re a new manager, you might enjoy listening to Thom’s counsel and his shared learnings as he’s risen in seniorityWhen it comes to information security he points out that it’s a topic that’s not always well understood - it’s seen as a nice to have and an annoying part of the business that gets in the way of business. This view is changing, slowly. So it’s important that Thom can communicate the seriousness of security and have stakeholders view it as critical to the speed and resilience of the business. But that doesn’t mean the conversation can’t be fun.In talking about his best conversation and his worst conversation, Thom is a great storyteller. He speaks as things really are - he’s not looking to blame, he just names things as they are and is willing to accept responsibility for his part in a disagreement. And he’s very comfortable naming the feelings, emotions and states of mind as he takes us through work situations and significant conversations. To learn more about Thom, check him out on LinkedIn.Click here for more episodes of Better Conversations with Sehaam Cyrene.

Apparently the consequence of having a day job when there's a wicked cold going around the northern part of the Lone Star State is that you might catch that cold by going into the office. The Gorillamen are in different stages of that cold, so please ignore any snarfiness in this episode. Also, we're just going to get straight to what we talked about this episode: When did you first learn there were consequences for certain actions? How much did consequences factor into your life when you were younger? How much do consequences factor into your life today? Do you think perceived consequences are often valid or are they overhyped? Neither of us have kids, but let's pretend we do. What consequences do you feel are most important to explain to a younger person? How does discipline factor into consequences? What is one lax action and consequence you wished you'd heeded more? What do you think about systems set up to measure results and force consequences (e.g. annual performance reviews)? Do you think it's effective to suggest to others ways to avoid negative consequences for their actions? As we rely on more tools (smart phones, apps, etc.) and institutions, what consequences come with that expansion of use? Do you think it's possible to live a life of few consequences? What consequences from the last decades do you think we will face in the not-too-distant future?

Can you imagine a situation like this? Humourous story written by Subhadra Sen Gupta, Illustrated by Tapas Guha, translated into Hindi by Manisha Chaudhry, published by Pratham Books. Narrated by Asawari Doshi. Recorded in Republic of Work, Cork City centre. The podcast starts with Roger & Paul describing what happened the last time they recorded the podcast. A disaster. The episode was lost : the recording equipment failed. That 'catastrophe' led to discussion about "What should a company do when it has a major failure?" All businesses have failures - you have to pick yourself up (2:30) What to do when you have a major disaster (a huge screw-up) - and you want to remain genuinely attractive? There's evidence that when things go wrong - providing you recover well - you become even more attractive to customers. (3:20) People think you're human We all fail. But because of the way you recovered... Your client is a human being as well. You can easily imagine the worst. However, the reaction may not be anger - may be one of understanding. Roger's story about his father's mistake. How he learned from the experience. "What are we going to do about it?" - this is the big question. (6:45) When this is the focus (1) Employee doesn't feel so horrible, they can continue to do their job (2) No energy is wasted on feeling bad, shouting - all energy is directed to solving the problem. There is slight reference to "A no - blame culture". (8:00) Roger's big recommendation: There are three questions that need to be asked when things go wrong (1) Why did it happen? (2) What have you learned from what went wrong? (At Business Jazz - we had a faulty kit, we weren't monitoring the audio, there was an intermittent fault. We weren't monitoring the audio throughout the whole podcast. (3) How do we move on? What's our action plan? (At Business Jazz, we had a 'small' problem - we moved on before we sorted the problem and that led to a much bigger problem.) Paul asks: What if the disaster is big and the cost of fixing it for ever is too high? Should you be going out of business? (14:15 ) This led to discussion of - Example of travel to Mars... - Use of Disclaimers - Insurance to cover failure to deliver. Plus even more discussion of the experience Roger had with Air Canada & Aer Lingus - on his way to Vancouver, Canada. The cost of guarantees Aer Lingus wasn't able to guarantee ... Big praise for Heathrow Airport website is excellent : tells you how to transfer. (19:00) Big emphasis on the importance of really good clear information - presented in a friendly language. Go to Heathrow. Paul & Roger say they'll put the Air Canada email up in shownotes. Paul sent a tweet with a link to the last episode of Business Jazz to Air Canada - but there's no guarantee the CEO got it. Humourous chat about Air Canada. Any other disasters? (24:50) Exxon Valdez oil spill is discussed. Elevator pitch: New TV program Roger would like to make. Roger tells " Do nothing - let the sea clean up" Better than throwing chemicals over the oil. Adding to polution. Oil is of nature - not synthetic. "We're not here to tell people how to clear up an oil slick" How to communicate that to the public in a way that will persuade the public you're being responsible: 1. Be seen to be doing something 2. Do what you can for wildlife 3. Educate people (For example: Why do you think we're transporting oil?) What caused the oil spill? A meteorite fell to earth theory If you have thoughts about oil spills, please get in touch An experiment to try at home: Spill olive oil on water & clean it up. Roger's tip - use lemon juice Contact us please at BusinessJazz.net.
