Jia Tolentino said "We have not “optimized” our wages, our childcare system, our political representation; we still hardly even think of parity as realistic in those arenas, let alone anything approaching perfection. We have maximized our capacity as market assets. That's all. For the way out, I think, we have to follow the cyborg. We have to be willing to be disloyal, to undermine. The cyborg is powerful because she grasps the potential in her own artificiality, because she accepts without question how deeply it is embedded in her." Jia Tolentino said "Figuring out how to “get better” at being a woman is a ridiculous and often amoral project – a subset of the larger, equally ridiculous, equally amoral project of learning to get better at life under accelerated capitalism. In these pursuits, most pleasures end up being traps, and every public-facing demand escalates in perpetuity. Satisfaction remains, under the terms of the system, necessarily out of reach." and I felt that. We live in a culture of relentless self-optimization. On the one hand, we are told to be ourselves, that no one is quite like us, that the world needs our unique brand of creativity and self-expression. But, on the other hand, we are also always being told that we should be the very best, best, best, best version of ourselves--that we can always be better, eat better, exercise better, look better, think better, succeed better, relax better, care for ourselves better. Better, better, better! Nowhere is this tyranny of the ideal more obvious and more taxing than in the way our culture views and advertises to women. On this episode of the pod, I am joined by my friend and colleague, Laura Batstone, to discuss how this relentless pursuit of better is experienced by women inside and outside the church. Don't miss it. Illustration: Ari Liloan/The Guardian

TRANSCRIPT FOR EP8:EPISODE 8 - LOVE IS A DECISION Welcome to DREAM TO SHINE show. I'm Loreta and in this episode, let's talk about LOVE IS A DECISION (married life)… When we were young, we're often asked “What is your Ideal Man or Ideal Woman?” We'll I watched this old Tagalog movie, where the lead star is collecting photos of her ideal guy from a magazine and pasting the parts into a blank sheet of paper. She cut the eyes of one guy, then the nose, the mouth etc until she formed her ideal guy, and the guy actually appeared in real life and they lived happily ever after. What I'm trying to point out is that we had to set our ideal partner and clearly specify the features and qualities. For my case, I wanted a smart, tall, good-looking guy with a good-sense of humor and can make me laugh. And I prayed over my partner. We live in the same village but different barangay. We met at the choir, he was bass and I'm alto. We started as friends, we have a lot of things in common. We clicked! We had chemistry. We're both proud and sometimes boastful. We both have big dreams which is to graduate and get a good paying job. However, our romance lasted for a year only and we parted ways. But after 5 years, we bumped into each other in a jeepney and took the same bus since we're both heading the same way. He's heading to Laguna and I'm heading to Makati. So, we started to re-connect and hang out with friends and they started teasing us again. And I went to Singapore and he followed. Falling in love is easy. Staying in love—that's the challenge! How can you keep your relationship fresh and growing amidst the demands, conflicts, and just plain boredom of everyday life? With children There is no school or class teaching us about relationships especially marriage It's true that once you and your partner lives under 1 roof, you will start to figure out to learn more about each other and each one will press a button that may trigger something that will cause a lot of negativities. In the beginning of your relationship, you are counting the many ways, of “how do I love thee”, but after getting married, you “Start to count ways of how you get into each other's nerves.” After 3 years of marriage, we attended Marriage Encounter Weekend, right after our long CNY trip to KL, Genting and JB. Men are from Mars, Women from Venus by John Gray Any kind of relationship must be 2-way, give and take, like dancing cha-cha With new insight you have the added wisdom and power to change your approach rather than seeking to change your partner. Many times a woman just wants to share her feelings about her day, and her husband, thinking he is helping, interrupts her by offering a steady flow of solutions to her problems. When a man invalidates a woman's feelings … I hope this episode about LOVE IS A DECISION will inspire and empower you to make your dream marriage and relationship fulfilled.I look forward to seeing you in my next episode where I will be sharing more of my personal journey and breakthroughs on how you too could DREAM TO SHINE.

Description: We all have her, whether we know it or not. All of us have an image of the Perfect Woman that we are constantly comparing ourselves to. This comparison makes us feel anxious, depressed, and throws us into a state of never feeling good enough. Charmayne talks about her experience finding her inner Ideal Woman and how she removed her and found greater peace.

We did it! The inaugural month of Article Club is in the books. We read and annotated Jia Tolentino's “The Tyranny of the Ideal Woman,” shared our thoughts, listened to Ms. Tolentino's answers to our questions, and this past Sunday, participated in discussions, both in-person and online. This is big! Thank you to Carina, Anne, Hannah, Katie, Peter, David, Tony, Vanessa, Ram, Sonya, Kati, Jennifer, Michele, Jim, Summer, Marni, and Vanessa for being the founders of Article Club. I'm very grateful.I'm also appreciative of Ms. Tolentino, who generously said yes to our interview request and helped us deepen our understanding of the article. Given this precedent, now there's an expectation that authors will join us in conversation.Sunday was great. We convened two discussions, the first one in person at my home in Oakland, and the second one online via Zoom. Both were extremely successful. Thoughtful readers came prepared, got to know each other, shared their questions and thoughts about the article, and pushed one another's thinking. It got me thinking: This Article Club thing is going to grow and get even better. To that end, please share your highlights and suggestions in the comments. How was this first month of Article Club for you? What was great, and what should be changed?I can't wait to do this again. Be on the lookout this Sunday, when I'll unveil February's article. You're going to want to read it and discuss it with others. See you soon!Quick note about the audio quality: There are some distracting sounds; they're not horrible, but they might be annoying. Is it possible to resist the forces of patriarchy and capitalism?I encourage you to take a listen and share your thoughts!Does listening to Jia clarify any of your questions? Get you thinking in a different way, or strengthen your views? Like (or dislike) her more? Help with your existential crisis of how to live in our current society? All right, let's discuss! In episode 13, we learned about the Image of the Ideal Woman and made some comparisons from Daniel chapter 3. In this discussion, we’ll dive deeper into the triggers or cues that cause us to fall down and worship the image, and how the Lord can help us eliminate them from our minds and hearts. (I called this episode 17 in the recording, but I really liked this one so I’m not going to re-record it to fix my mistake!)
At long last, Article Club is here! I'm very happy to announce that our inaugural article will be “The Tyranny of the Ideal Woman,” by Jia Tolentino. This article, which appeared in Issue #204 in August, was the most-read piece in The Highlighter last year. It's very worthy of our deep read and discussion. I look forward to re-reading it and talking about it with you. Are you in? Hope so!If you're in, here's what's next:Say hi in the comments. Who are you? Why are you interested in this article and/or Article Club? Are you enjoying your 2020 so far?Read the article sometime this week. (It'll take 20-30 minutes.) Or, if you're feeling advanced, annotate it using this Google Docs version.Get your questions and first impressions ready for next Sunday. In Daniel chapter 3, we can see the immense pressure the 3 Hebrews faced to bow down to Nebuchadnezzar’s golden image. In our day, we also face unbelievable pressure to bow down to an image—the “image of the ideal woman.” In this episode, we’ll explore various aspects of this image, and how it sneaks its way into our minds and powerfully influences how we see both our body and our beauty.

Welcome to In a Word, a newsletter that cultivates thoughtfulness, one word at a time. If a friend forwarded you this email, click the button to subscribe:Hey there! Here we are, a day into fall, a week from turning the corner into October. A friend told me last week that September is one of the hardest months of the year for people (based on spikes in suicide rates and depression). If you’re struggling, I hope you know you’re not alone. Quick reminder: In A Word now has a companion podcast! You can listen by hitting the play button at the top of the email, or by clicking the “Listen in podcast app” link below the play button. (Make sure to click the link from your phone if you want to listen in your podcast app.) The podcast gives me space to share more thoughts that don’t fit in this already lengthy newsletter. Join me there for even more cultivated thoughtfulness! In this issue, we’re exploring the word “better.” For optimists, optimizers and idealists, the idea that things can always get better is full of hope. In some cases, we must come to terms with things that won’t get better. In others, we must train our eyes to see minuscule drops of grace and tiny steps forward. This theme has a lot for us to ponder, so let’s dive in!In this issue, you’ll find a essay about how Trader Joe’s has made me a better person, followed by a better collection, and a closing benediction.I have never seen a cart rack in a Trader Joe’s parking lot, yet I have scarcely seen an abandoned cart. Certain grocery stores require a quarter deposit to use a cart, appealing to cold, monetary interests—return your cart, get your quarter back. Other stores, also honest about the human tendency towards laziness and entropy, simply pay an employee to corral the carts. At Trader Joe’s, I wouldn’t dare set a bag of Ghost Pepper chips I changed my mind about (when I remember that I have the heat tolerance of an edamame bean) in some random aisle. Why is that? When you are treated like a human, you act like a human. We can either live by the rule that high expectations will always disappoint us, or we can live in the world of Trader Joe’s. Joe has surveyed the land, from a magical warehouse in Monrovia, the only warehouse in the history of ever with flattering lighting, probably. (Make no mistake, THERE ARE PEANUTS PROCESSED IN THIS FACILITY, but Joe always warns you and keeps an Epi pen in his smock pocket, right next to the Everlasting Gobstoppers.) Joe has watched us retreat from neighborhood groceries. He has watched us sort ourselves into smaller and smaller echo chambers. He has watched us let ourselves and each other down. He’s seen it all, and he’s bet on our better nature. Trader Joe’s goes above and beyond in the hopes that we, the customers, and society, will, too. Here are just a handful of ways Trader Joe’s has made me a better person:I’m more adventurous. By nature, I’m a routine oriented person, content to eat the same breakfast every day. But over the years I’ve ventured to try cookie butter (okay so maybe that was no risky wager), healthy spinach dip, thai chili dusted almonds, and chips made from peas, sweet potatoes, beets, (even godforsaken corn). Joe has convinced me to go out on a limb time and time again, with his ridiculous no-questions-asked return policy. I’ve joined the plant lady ranks. My first foray into houseplants was an impulse buy at Trader Joe’s. I couldn’t resist the Easter Lily, nestled in its festively wrapped plastic pot, $6.99 a price low enough to risk. Now I’ve got potted plants everywhere, cleaning the dirty diaper and dog scented air of my home. I’ve become a “just because” gift giver. Mini bouquets, small boxes of truffles and seasonal candles make it easy to pick up a pick-me-up for a friend in the midst of a weekly grocery trip. I am more kind to the earth. Reusable bags became a fixture in my backseat because TJ’s makes them so vibrant and appealing. (I may also have been enticed by the gift card drawing for bag bringers, though I’ve been entering for 15 years and have yet to win.) Sure, after years of use, the bottom may be stained with blueberry juice (or likely something more sinister, but no one’s gotten E. Coli, so it’s fine). Still, their bright patterns are irresistible, checkout after checkout.I’ve reclaimed the virtues of small talk. Trader Joe’s employees make conversation, but not to upsell you something you don’t want. It’s more of a, “hey human, I, a fellow human, see you, and acknowledge your humanity. And yes, I would love to show you where we moved the Clif bars,” vibe. More often than not, I see someone I know while shopping. In another store I might feel tempted to turn the other way, especially if the interaction poses a high awkwardness risk. But in TJ’s, I’m infected by a largesse of spirit, remembering names and kissing babies like a politician. It’s refreshing not to be anonymous in a public space, even if it’s uncomfortable.I may be an idealist, but even I can admit the limitations of an inexplicably Hawaiian branded grocery store to change the wider culture. But for a blissful 30 minutes a week, an errand becomes an adventure as I enter this oasis of creative samples and lighthearted customer service. If we can stop leaving carts in the parking lot likes monsters, what else can we accomplish? Surely we can solve healthcare. Or at least deliver a Trader Joe’s bag of sustenance to a sick friend’s doorstep. Follow me on Instagram for weekly TJ’s finds. They won’t help you with your meal plan, but they might make your day. Athleisure, Barre, and Kale: The Tyranny of the Ideal Woman:“These days, it is perhaps even more psychologically seamless than ever for an ordinary woman to spend her life walking toward the idealized mirage of her own self-image.”Better Than Before is Gretchen Rubin’s book dedicated to habit change. Her suggestions are practical, easy to implement, and research-based. She also offers these great one-page resources to download, like “The Better Than Before Habits Manifesto.” #5 particularly caught my attention: “Things often get harder before they get easier.” A sister grapples with how to help her brother struggling with mental illness:One day his caseworker said to me: “What you need to understand is that he’s not going to be ‘fixed.’ He’ll have good days and bad days. He’s trying. But don’t ever forget that he is a person. He isn’t just an illness.”As a new (somewhat skeptical) user of the Calm app, I was delighted by My New Meditation App Makes Me Feel So Much Better Than You:“Using the app changed the relationship I have with my iPhone X. After examining my deepest intentions, I decided to upgrade.”A few weeks ago, my friend had the flu. I didn’t have time to cook her a meal, but I picked up these favorites from Trader Joe’s for her. (I also included a couple cups of ramen that TJ’s now sells and she said those were “the ultimate sick food,” so keep that in your back pocket, too.)A few last links worth a click:Joy the Baker teaches us how to be better bakersWhy does wine get better with age?“No card can make this better” card for the occasions when you don’t know what to saySong lyric print of Jack Johnson’s “Better Together”May we celebrate three steps forward, even as we take one back. Progress is praiseworthy, however small. May we sense the unquantifiable—the progress we cannot chart on a graph, but know in our bones. May we remember that we are more than our output, that we are human by design, not by defect. May we refuse to morph into robotic imitations of ourselves, chasing wholeness through time management apps and productivity hacks. May we opt out of optimization when we find our humanity, our joy, and our healing hang in the balance. As always, I’d also love to hear your thoughts on anything this issue calls to mind for you. In this week's rebroadcast we're tackling the pressure to be perfect. Do you know that feeling? Are you feeling pressured by Instagram to pretend like your life is perfect? Today we’re going to talk about this pressure for perfection and at the end of the episode I’m going to share where I’ll be next. I've been hearing a lot that there is this pressure, from Instagram and Pinterest (and the internet in general) to be perfect, to edit your life perfectly, to have a perfect house and perfect craft and perfect hair. And when I heard I thought, yeah, that makes sense, I've felt that. There IS that pressure. Then I was reading an article in New York magazine about Instagram influencers in the fashion industry – how fashion companies are now paying them to wear their goods – which is something going on in every industry and it makes perfect sense – people are paying attention to their phones more than to commercials, so move your commercials to where people pay attention. But what struck me is that the women who follow these fashion influencers, they feel pressure. Pressure to have the newest Gucci shoe, the newest Prada purse. And I reflected that I never feel that pressure. It may be that I live in East TN, but it's also that I don't follow a lot of fashion accounts and I don't demonstrate my own self-identity through high fashion. So it literally never occurs to me to feel any “pressure” to have anything Louis Vuitton. And I'm betting the same is true for you. From my conversations with you, you're not very likely to feel pressured by these fashion influencers, and like me, you may be aghast and confused that anyone DOES feel that pressure. Like: why does it even matter? Who cares? But you DO feel pressured by home bloggers or DIY queens or #planneraddicts to have a beautiful clean home or DIY everything or make your planner really pretty. Why? This is going to sound harsh, but bear with me, because I'm saying it with love: We feel pressured by these standards because we choose to. This is a red pill moment – There is no pressure. There is no real pressure. you are creating the pressure by the things you're choosing to pay attention to AND then the comparison program that runs automatically, comparing what you see to your own life. I'm not saying you don't FEEL legitimate pressure, I'm saying there is no *external* pressure. We are making the pressure inside our own feeds and in our own selves. If you don't believe me, think of it like this – you are the only person who follows exactly who you follow. NO ONE ELSE follows who you follow. They may follow 4-6 of the same people, and then a bunch of food bloggers. Or internet business dudes who post about taking a private jet to the beach. Or teenagers making duck faces. Or fitness bloggers who post daily workouts. So they are getting a whole bunch of DIFFERENT messages about what Instagram (or a home or a life or a business) “should” be. And if you still don't believe me – look at people who are successful who you don't follow – do they seem to be following the same rules as the people you've been comparing yourself to? Are they beating themselves up for not looking like Elsie or Emma of @abeautifulmess? Or Stephan West of @westknits? Or @negharfonooni? Or Kristabel of @Iamkristabel? Or Sarah Tasker of @meandorla? or @garyvee? or @galadarling? Or @yespleaseplanning? And if you are comparing yourself to one of the ones I just mentioned, go look at the other ones – all big accounts, all successful businesses (as far as i know,) and all reallllly different – in content, lifestyle, point of view. And I can hear you right now: But Tara, if I'm going to operate in this handmade world, or in this knit design world, or build the biz I want to build, this is the world I'm living in, I have to know what's out there, my customers will be comparing, I have to live up to what the other people are doing. No. 99% of your customers are NOT following all the other accounts you follow. In fact, they are likely following more people they compare themselves to, like Christian moms with 5 kids who find time to write daily devotionals and have sit-down breakfast, or people who color beautiful coloring book pages, or women who compete in fitness competitions, or lesbians who take beautiful nature photography while hiking with their perfect partner. So no, they're not comparing you to the other people like you, they're comparing themselves to the other people like themselves. And if you wholesale, then yes, your retailers do know what's happening in your industry, but they care far more that you deliver what you promise, on time and that you're easy to work with, than if your house looks perfect and you posted a beautiful shot of dinner. Now, let's be honest – some pressure isn't coming from your own internal comparison software, some comparison is coming from people in your lives. Maybe your friends talk about their fat thighs, or your mom comments on your kid's clothes or your neighbor jokes that your lawn could use mowing. There is PLENTY of pressure to conform to outside expectations, in our every day life. So let's not make more for ourselves, ok? Let's not use social media, which can be a place to connect and learn, as a stick to beat ourselves with, ok? I know, there is an automatic internal computer program that kicks off this comparison trap – you can't even seem to stop it before it's swept you away. So let's look at how to keep it from even running. Who you follow If who you follow makes you feel bad about yourself, your life, your home, or your business, stop following them. STOP FOLLOWING THEM. Really, even if it's your best friend or your biggest competitor. You can keep the computer program from running if you don't feed it images Think of magazines – we all know that reading magazines that only show one kind of beauty, one kind of Ideal Woman, warp our ideas of what's pretty. If all you ever see is skinny 14 year old blonde girls shown in magazines, then that starts to become the “norm” of what beautiful is. And your own internal sense of what's beautiful becomes warped and anyone who doesn't look like that is no longer beautiful. This points to the STRENGTH of the internet – we can control these images. We can't control what magazines and commercials tell us about beauty or home life or business should look like, but we CAN control what the internet tells us is the “norm”. WE get to decide what's on our internets, by who we follow and what we pay attention to. So fill up your feed with diversity – diversity of people, of ways of running a handmade business, of content, of ideas. If you're following 50 #planneraddict accounts and you feel bad your planner isn't prettier, STOP. Follow someone like me who writes a scribbled to-do list every day (and gets a lot of stuff done). If you think your house isn't nice enough because you can't afford to buy anything except Target, follow someone who has 10 dogs, follow a food blogger who never shows her house. When it kicks in, stop it. So part of this pressure we create in our heads? It's there because we keep feeding it. Not just with who we follow, but with what we KEEP THINKING about it. If you notice your Comparison Software start to run. STOP IT. You get to choose your next thought. Do you go deeper down the path of flogging your imperfections? Do you fret and spiral? Or do you choose another thought? It’s HARD to change your thoughts, so change your environment. Stand up. Get off internet, go journal, make a cup of tea. Do something to change something. But don't keep telling yourself: OMG, I have to have blah blah. I have to do blah blah. This isn't as good as so-and-so's. It's totally normal to have those thoughts but what do you do NEXT? So this is your prescription: Stop following those you have the hardest time comparing yourself to. Follow a variety of people doing Instagram in a different way. Choose another thought! I wanna hear how you handle this, so come to Instagram and tell me! Listen in at TaraSwiger.com/podcast273

It’s episode 69, y’all—and that means we’re getting steamy. Author Jasmine Guillory joins us for a look at the world of romance novels: why they’re important, what people get wrong about them, and what it’s really like to write them for a living. Jasmine is the New York Times bestselling author of The Wedding Date, The Proposal, and a new book, The Wedding Party, which just came out in July. Her hugely popular romance novels have earned fans from Reese Withersppoon to Roxane Gay to, well, us! We loved hearing Jasmine talk about why she centers black women in her books, how she writes about bodies in inclusive ways, and why romance novels aren’t guilty pleasures—but rather a sweet (and sexy!) comfort in tough times. People of color have always embraced stories that weren’t about us, so we have known that everybody else out there can do it… These are stories that everybody wants to see. —Jasmine Guillory, author of The Wedding Party We chat about: Jasmine’s latest book, The Wedding Party. It’s about Maddie and Theo, who share a best friend and a mutual hatred—till they end up in the same wedding party, and keep “accidentally sleeping together.” Why so many of us (ahem, Sara) are biased against romance novels. “There’s so much misogyny out there in the world, both external and internalized, that people kind of think that books that treat women as whole people...there must be something wrong with them.” How pizza and tacos are central to a steamy plot. “I want more women especially to stop thinking of foods as ‘bad’ or ‘good’—to stop thinking of themselves as ‘bad’ or ‘good’ based on what they eat that day.” Why Jasmine’s sex scenes get super-sexy—without focusing on characters’ body parts. “I wanted them to feel like no matter what they looked like in comparison to the character, there are certain things about your body that will still attract people.” Writing consent into the storyline. “If you’re writing a story where a heterosexual relationship is at the center of it, the power dynamics between the two people are important and you have to analyze that.” Links: JasmineGuillory.com Jasmine on Twitter and Instagram The Wedding Party How to Write Consent in Romance Novels by Hannah Giorgis for The Atlantic Plus: Self-optimization culture is a tool of hyper-capitalist patriarchy, pass it on Getting your nails done and watching goofy TV is fine, ty This is now a Jia Tolentino stan podcast. In this lesson, Mike reviews what the Bible describes when it refers to an ideal spouse.
"THE IDEAL WOMAN" - by Pastor A.J. Dummitt I heard one guy say… What if GOD IS a woman? Not only am I going to HELL, I'll never know why! ALL MOMS KNOW THIS STUFF One mom was out walking with her 4-year-old daughter when her girl picked up something from the ground and started to put it in her mouth. The mother tells what happens in her own words: "I took the item away from her and I asked her not to do that." My daughter quickly asked, "Why?" "Because it's been lying outside, you don't know where it's been, it's dirty and probably has germs," I replied. At this point, my daughter looked at me with total admiration and asked, "Wow! How do you know all this stuff?" I thought quickly and said, "All moms know this stuff. It's on the Mommy Test. You have to know it, or they don't let you be a Mommy." We walked along in silence for 2 or 3 minutes, as she pondered this new information. "Oh...I get it!" she beamed, "So if you don't pass the test you have to be the daddy?" I smiled and replied, "Exactly." (From a sermon by Mark Opperman, Mothers: Guardians of the Heart, 6/19/2012) This is Mother's Day and I'd like to take a few moments and talk about the Ideal Woman. What is the Ideal Woman like? You'll get a variety of answers to that question! Some say the ideal woman is a woman who will obey your every whim, wait on you hand and foot, and literally worship the ground you walk on (I think the word for this is Male Chauvinism). Others say the ideal woman can do the work of two men, and if women were prime ministers and presidents, wars would end, unemployment would be eliminated, and world hunger would be a thing of the past (I think the word for this is Neo Feminism). The truth lies somewhere between these two extremes. You don't have to look very far to find a description of the Ideal Woman - if you have a Bible. Her description is found in Proverbs 31:10-31. Let's read it together today… Proverbs 31:10-31 (NASB) Description of a Worthy Woman 10 An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above jewels. 11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, And he will have no lack of gain. 12 She does him good and not evil All the days of her life. 13 She looks for wool and flax And works with her [h]hands [i]in delight. 14 She is like merchant ships; She brings her food from afar. 15 She rises also while it is still night And gives food to her household And [j]portions to her maidens. 16 She considers a field and buys it; From [k]her earnings she plants a vineyard. 17 She girds [l]herself with strength And makes her arms strong. 18 She senses that her gain is good; Her lamp does not go out at night. 19 She stretches out her hands to the distaff, And her [m]hands grasp the spindle. 20 She [n]extends her hand to the poor, And she stretches out her hands to the needy. 21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household, For all her household are clothed with scarlet. 22 She makes coverings for herself; Her clothing is fine linen and purple. 23 Her husband is known in the gates, When he sits among the elders of the land. 24 She makes linen garments and sells them, And [o]supplies belts to the [p]tradesmen. 25 Strength and dignity are her clothing, And she smiles at the [q]future. 26 She opens her mouth in wisdom, And the [r]teaching of kindness is on her tongue. 27 She looks well to the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness. 28 Her children rise up and bless her; Her husband also, and he praises her, saying: 29 “Many daughters have done nobly, But you excel them all.” 30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, But a woman who [s]fears the Lord, she shall be praised. 31 Give her the [t]product of her hands, And let her works praise her in the gates. This Proverb is God's description of the Ideal Woman - and God isn't a chauvinist, He is our Creator. Ladies, He designed and created you, and He knows what will satisfy you and bring fulfillment to your life. You would be wise, if you acquaint yourself with this lady and make her your role model. And keep in mind - this proverb wasn't written to make you feel guilty or place unrealistic expectations on your life. It was written to build you up and show you your God-given potential. Let's notice 2 items about the Ideal Woman. The person she is and the praise she deserves! I. The Person She Is. A. She is a Valuable WIFE. B. She is a Vigorous WORKER. (1) She works hard at HOME (read vs 15 & 27). (2) She works hard at the JOB (read vs. 18, 24). (3) She even works hard when she SHOPS (read vs. 13-16) The ideal woman is a valuable wife, a vigorous worker, and . . . C. She is a Virtuous WOMAN. (1) Verse 20 describes the compassion she shows. (2) Verse 25 describes the character she has. (3) Verse 26 describes the counsel she gives. To sum it all up, the Ideal Woman is Christlike! II. The Praise She Deserves. (Read vs. 28-31). For the most part, I've preached to the ladies - and I don't want the rest of you to feel left out, so let me preach to you for a few minutes. Do you know why we ought to praise the godly women in our lives? A. Because it feels GOOD. B. Because it honors GOD. C. Because it strengthens GODLY WOMEN. Conclusion: Husbands, teenagers, and children, praise her while you have her. And you will strengthen her, honor God, and add great joy to your own life (v. 28, her children arise and call her blessed, her husband also, and he praises her).

On this week's episode of Rise Up Worldwide, we had an Election Special! Joe BOSS started off by talking about an experience he had voting four years ago. We then spoke about some political topics important in this election, such as Women's rights and, more specifically abortion. We then spoke about the shifted gears and started discussing "The Ideal Woman" and ladies like Michelle Obama, Ayesha Curry, and Phylicia Rashad were at the top of list, although G Dott had strong feelings against the intensity of Ayesha Curry's media presence. We wrapped up with encouraging everyone to stay tuned to election coverage. In this show we look at how much women are still trying to live up to the stereotype of the ideal woman - and how that may be hurting our careers. You know her: she's does everything (at home and at work), she looks fabulous, and, of course, she's nice. My interviewee, management professor and author Jodi Detjen, says women's efforts to tick all the right female boxes are consuming our waking thoughts, and our careers are suffering as a result. In the first show of the fall season my guest, author and management professor Jodi Detjen, says women aren't making it to positions of power because they're too busy trying to be 'the ideal woman' - attempting to do everything perfectly at work and at home, all the while looking great and, of course, being nice. But all that striving for perfection doesn't leave much time for anything else. Detjen and I discuss why women still fall into this trap and how to adjust your assumptions in order to have a saner existence - at work and at home.
