Why does someone who has led in extreme, high-pressure environments write a book about mindfulness and resilience? In this episode, I sit down with Ash Alexander-Cooper, OBE - former elite military commander and author of Mindful Soldier, to talk about the lived experiences that shaped his leadership and the lessons earned along the way. We explore why he wrote the book, what real-world leadership under pressure taught him about responsibility and resilience, and how he now works with leaders to build steadiness from the inside out. Each chapter of Mindful Soldier includes practical tools and exercises, making this more than a story. It is a guide people can actively apply in their own lives and leadership. We also discuss the individuals and organizations this work has already impacted. Grounded. Practical. Reflective.
This conversation explores workplace bullying through a lens that goes far deeper than behavior. We examine the physiology of harm, the nervous system impact of chronic workplace stress, and how leadership either contributes to trauma or actively prevents it. Liza Collins is a trauma preventative leadership coach, consultant, and number one best selling author of The Physiology of Bullying. With more than three decades of experience across healthcare systems in the UK and internationally, her work bridges lived experience, neuroscience, and relational leadership practice. In this episode, we explore: • What chronic workplace harm does to the nervous system • How bullying reshapes identity, health, and self trust • The difference between surviving a toxic system and restoring agency • Why leadership responsibility extends beyond performance metrics • What trauma preventative leadership actually looks like in practice This conversation moves beyond surface level discussions about difficult personalities. It addresses power, safety, and the biological cost of sustained psychological threat. For anyone navigating workplace harm, leading teams, or building cultures of psychological safety, this episode offers insight, clarity, and grounded perspective.

This week, our hosts find reasonable parking rates at the intersection of love and money with Materialists (2025). Not everyone has realistic expectations when it comes to finding a good match, but Madison doesn't think it's too much to ask for a film's trailer to match its tone. Chelsea wholeheartedly believes people as rich as Pedro Pascal was in this flick should invest in some art for their cement walls, or at least an interior decorator. Starring Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans, this quest for love among New York's elite asks us to consider each of our values...and pray we're not morally bankrupt.Connect With UsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/loveatfirstscreening/Email: loveatfirstscreening@gmail.comProduction Hosts: Chelsea Ciccone and Madison HillMusic: Good StephArtwork: Chelsea CicconeSocial Media: Marissa CicconeAbout the ShowAn examination of classic tropes and iconic characters pits connoisseur against cynic—one romantic comedy at a time. Understanding Trauma Across the Lifespan with Dr. Frank Putnam Content Note: This episode includes discussion of trauma, child maltreatment, and dissociation; please listen at your own pace and care for your wellbeing while engaging. In this episode, Dr. Deb Lindh sits down with Dr. Frank Putnam, a renowned psychiatrist, researcher, and national leader in the study of trauma, child maltreatment, and its lifelong effects. With a career spanning decades of clinical work and groundbreaking research, Dr. Putnam has been instrumental in advancing the field of traumatic stress studies and mentoring generations of trauma scientists. Dr. Putnam's work began early in his career at the National Institute of Mental Health, where he first encountered the profound effects of child abuse on psychological and biological development. This experience shaped his lifelong focus on understanding trauma's impact from childhood into adulthood and highlighted the importance of early research to inform healing-informed practice. His pioneering research on dissociation and dissociative disorders helped transform the field from case-based observations into evidence-based science, including influential publications and the co-authorship of tools widely used in trauma research. Today, Dr. Putnam continues to research and advocate for trauma-informed approaches that acknowledge the complex ways early adversity shapes health outcomes across the lifespan. He is also recognized for his decades of mentorship and service, including the establishment of the Frank W. Putnam Trauma Research Scholars Program, which supports emerging trauma researchers whose work has great potential to contribute meaningfully to the field. In this conversation we explore: • What we currently understand about how trauma affects development from childhood through adulthood • How early research in child maltreatment and dissociation reshaped scientific thinking about trauma • The importance of rigorous trauma research and mentorship in broadening the field • What trauma professionals and survivors alike can take from decades of evidence-based work Whether you're new to the trauma conversation or deeply embedded in healing work, this episode offers clarity, context, and hope grounded in decades of research and human experience.

Moral injury is what happens when our values, beliefs, and sense of right and wrong are fractured by experiences we never chose, systems we did not control, and situations that forced impossible decisions. In this episode, Dr. Deb explores moral injury as a deeply human experience that impacts identity, meaning, trust, and connection. This conversation moves beyond fear based trauma and into the space of shame, guilt, grief, anger, betrayal, and disillusionment, offering a grounded, trauma informed understanding of how moral injury forms and how healing becomes possible. In this episode: • What moral injury is and how it differs from fear based trauma • How values conflicts impact identity and meaning • Why shame, guilt, grief, and betrayal are common • How moral injury shows up in the nervous system • The role of connection, agency, and meaning in healing Reflection: Where have your values and experiences felt misaligned? What parts of you adapted to survive morally challenging environments? What does integrity feel like in your body? If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available. Brought to you by the butts of the Town and Country security guards, Chelsea's most baffling experience of the season: Xanadu (1980). This beautifully rendered 80's roller disco fever dream skated its way into Madison's heart and melted Chelsea's brain in the process. What was the plot? What was that Ferngully-styled animated love montage? Why is Gene Kelly on skates? None of this gets answered! You'll love it, we promise. The soundtrack is incredible and the visuals were cutting edge. Were. After years of research searching for the perfect retirement community, Judy found Woodside. She visited the Villages, Del Webb, and so many others that she found didn't fit what she was looking for - other active retirees of similar age. Now she's IN LOVE with retirement and shared her entire story with me on my show, Retirement Reality. This NOT a paid advertisement. If you wish to reach out for a Discovery tour of Woodside, you can email David directly at dseawell@woodsidecommunities.com and if you let him know you found him through my channel, he'll make sure to treat you well!I'm flying from Los Angeles to Aiken, South Carolina to visit the Woodside community next month myself to do a full review of the community (similar to a restaurant review, but for retirement communities)! Is there a retirement community you're excited to go to? If so, let me know in the comments and I'll add them to my list of communities to review! For Judy, early retirement comes down to one word: choices. At 57, two years into life after work, she wakes up with the freedom to choose slow mornings, long walks, golf leagues, pickleball lessons, and spontaneous trips. Her plan was always early retirement at 55, and she never lost sight of it... even when fear, routine, and the temptation of “one more year” crept in.She shares how she built her “superhero account,” prepared for healthcare, learned to balance enjoying today with planning for tomorrow, and embraced the courage to leave a career she liked for a life she loves.Want to be a guest on THIS show and help others by sharing your story? In times of uncertainty, stress, and ongoing change, hope can feel fragile, distant, or even unavailable. This episode of PTSD and Beyond explores how hope functions during turbulent times, how hope can become hopeless, how hope can return, and how mindfulness and connection support that process. This conversation is grounded in trauma informed psychology, lived experience, and nervous system awareness. Rather than forcing positivity or offering quick fixes, this episode invites a compassionate, human exploration of hope as a capacity that ebbs and flows depending on safety, connection, and meaning. In this episode, we explore • What hope really means and what it is not • How hope shifts into hopelessness and why that happens • How hopelessness can be a protective response rather than a failure • Where we go and what we do when hope feels distant • How hope returns through safety, connection, and agency • The role of community in sustaining hope • How mindfulness supports nervous system regulation and restores possibility • Why self compassion matters when navigating uncertainty This episode includes a brief, optional mindfulness practice and reflective questions designed to support awareness, integration, and self trust. If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available. In the U.S., you can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. It is available 24/7 and free and confidential. This milestone 550th episode of PTSD and Beyond features a meaningful conversation between Dr. Deb and basketball coach and mentor Jerel Seamon, marking ten years since they first met. This episode centers the power of vulnerability, lived experience, and storytelling. Jerel reflects on how sharing his story, giving himself grace, and staying connected to purpose have shaped his life and leadership. Together, the conversation explores how openness and honesty create connection, hope, and the ability to support others in meaningful ways. Basketball has been a consistent source of hope in Jerel's life. The episode includes a shout out to Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves, highlighting how the game continues to represent resilience, belief, and possibility. Rather than focusing on performance or perfection, this conversation reflects on what it means to live with intention, to honor lived experience, and to use what we have been through to help others move forward. In this episode, we explore • Vulnerability as strength • The role of lived experience and storytelling • Giving ourselves grace while continuing to grow • Living with purpose and helping others • Basketball as a source of hope and consistency • The impact of shared moments and long standing connections This episode reflects the heart of PTSD and Beyond where lived experience is honored, stories matter, and healing and growth are possible through connection. As a new year begins, there is often an unspoken pressure to feel motivated, clear, and already moving forward. But not everyone starts the year feeling strong. Some start stalled. Some start somewhere in between. In this episode of PTSD and Beyond, we explore why either way is okay and why what matters most is practicing the space of G.R.A.C.E. Grace is not a process. Grace is a practice. When we feel stalled, old patterns often rush in. Shame. Stigma. Rumination. Past criticisms. Stories that were never ours to carry. None of these support healing or growth. This episode introduces the G.R.A.C.E. practice as a way to move beyond coping and into grounded, compassionate self leadership. In this episode, we explore: • Why starting strong does not eliminate the need for grace • Why starting stalled is not a failure • How shame and past conditioning hijack the nervous system • Why grace is a daily practice, not a checklist The G.R.A.C.E. Practice G Ground Returning to the body and the present moment through sensation and breath. R Recognize Naming what is activated while staying anchored in now. A Allow Giving yourself permission to assess and adjust rather than suppress or react. C Choose Remembering that you have choice and practicing responses ahead of time. E Exit and Emerge Stepping into safety and returning when ready, without rushing or escaping. Whether this year has started strong or stalled, this practice offers a way forward that honors healing, agency, and humanity. He is a filmmaker and director, most recently coming out with Brilliant Disguise. Brilliant Disguise tells the unique story of a group of inspired Western spiritual seekers from the 60s, who in meeting the great American teacher, Ram Dass, followed him to India to meet his Guru, Neem Karoli Baba, familiarly known as Maharaj-ji. Two days before he left his body, Maharaj-ji instructed K.C. Tewari to take care of the Westerners, which he did resolutely until the day he died in 1997. Silver's #1 charting MGM/UA/Warners film, “The Compleat Beatles” is the critically acclaimed biopic movie about history's most famous band. The term ‘rockumentary' was first applied to this two-hour movie. Rolling Stone recently described the film as a “masterwork.” Silver's Warner Brothers' feature film, “No Nukes” also started the whole trend of music/activism feature documentaries. “Urgyen and his sons and all Dzogchen people believe that dreaming is as important as meditating. Dreams are fluid, anything can happen in a dream. You can fly, you can walk through a wall. What Mingyur says is that is the perfect analogy for life itself; life is as fluid and as transparent as that dream, but we don't know it because we think it's solid because we can't put our finger through our hand.” –David SilverSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
As 2025 comes to a close, this episode of PTSD and Beyond offers a slower, more intentional way to pause. December 31 is often treated like a countdown or a party night. But it is also a bridge. A bridge between who we were, who we lived as this year, and who we are becoming next. In this Self Care Sunday episode, Dr. Deb shares a trauma-informed reflection practice that supports the nervous system through transition. Rather than rushing into goals or avoiding the moment, this episode focuses on reflection, closure, and care as essential forms of self care. This episode explores • Why endings and transitions matter • The difference between reflection and rumination • How unfinished projects and decisions affect mental and emotional health • The role of energy awareness, boundaries, and environment • A simple planning approach that supports clarity without overwhelm This episode is for listeners who want to end the year with intention, steadiness, and care. Listen at your own pace. Pause or return as needed. Take what resonates. If this episode resonates, share it with someone who may need a reminder that healing does not always announce itself loudly. Sometimes it arrives as a breath, a softness, or a quiet moment the body whispers you are safe right now. Follow, subscribe, and leave a review to support PTSD and Beyond. Happy Holidays, LAFSters! To celebrate the season, our hosts peel back the wrapping paper on Last Christmas (2019). Chelsea hypothesizes that this story may be A Christmas Carol for the modern age, and although this stocking may not be stuffed with uncomplicated cheer, Madison can't get enough of its Wham!-ful soundtrack. Starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding, and with memorable performances from Emma Thompson and Michelle Yeoh, this seasonal tale of second chances underscores the gift of community for a woman who's most definitely on Santa's naughty list. In today's episode Dr. Deb shares a rare and deeply personal moment in trauma healing. A moment that did not begin with a thought or an insight, but with a simple sensation in the body that arrived without fear, without story, and without the usual pull of survival mode. This episode explores what happens when the nervous system shifts into safety after years of vigilance. Listeners will hear how lightness, breath, softening, and clarity can emerge before the mind recognizes what is changing and how these somatic signals mark real progress in trauma recovery. Through lived experience and grounded psychology, Dr. Deb walks through the connection between sensation and regulation, the difference between fear based intuition and regulated intuition, and why the body often knows we have healed long before the mind has language for it. You will hear how an unexpected moment of inner child connection reflected years of work in a single gesture and why this kind of integration becomes a powerful sign of identity level healing. This episode is for anyone who has ever wondered how to recognize genuine nervous system regulation, how intuition becomes clearer when the body is safe, and how healing often announces itself quietly rather than dramatically. In this episode you will learn • How a sensation without story signals nervous system regulation • Why the body often leads healing before the mind understands it • The difference between hypervigilance and regulated intuition • How somatic softening creates space for clarity and grounded insight • What it means when the inner child appears with trust and joy • How identity shifts become visible through somatic cues • Why small moments of ease are often the first signs of real recovery Reflection questions for listeners • What sensations tell me I am safe • Where do I feel softening in my body today • How does intuition feel when it is grounded instead of urgent • What has my inner child been waiting for • What identity shifts might already be happening in me If this episode resonates, share it with someone who may need a reminder that healing does not always announce itself loudly. Sometimes it arrives as a breath, a softness, or a quiet moment the body whispers you are safe right now. Follow, subscribe, and leave a review to support PTSD and Beyond. Join us on Ko-Fi to help keep these conversations going.

Hello to you listening in Brittany, France!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. As a storyteller for some 30 years now I can say this: when life is upside down and backward we call on the old stories. The old stories of who we are and where we came from ground us in the truth of the origins we might forget when distracted by shiny things, especially at this time of year.Shopping [by Faith Shearin]"My husband and I stood together in the new mallwhich was clean and white and full of possibility. We were poor so we liked to walk through the storessince this was like walking through our dreams. In one we admired coffee makers, blue potterybowls, toaster ovens as big as televisions. In another, we eased into a leather couch and imaginedcocktails in a room overlooking the sea. When wesniffed scented candles we saw our future faces, softly lit, over a dinner of pasta and wine. Whenwe touched thick bathrobes we saw midnight swims and bathtubs so vast they might bemistaken for lakes. My husband's glasses hurthis face and his shoes were full of holes. There was a space in our living room wherea couch should have been. We longed for fancy shower curtains, flannel sheets, shiny silverware, expensive winter coats.Sometimes, at night, we sat up and made lists. We pressed our heads together and wroteour wants all over torn notebook pages.Nearly everyone we loved was alive and we were in love but we liked wanting. Nothingwas ever as nice when we brought it home. The objects in stores looked best in stores. The stores were possible futures and, youngand poor, we went shopping. It was nicethen: we didn't know we already had everything.""Shopping" by Faith Shearin, from The Owl Question. © Utah State University Press, 2002.My mother always told us that we were rich we just didn't have a lot of money. When money was even tighter we weren't poor; we were just broke. Mom was right. The shiny things have come and gone but the richness of the stories - who I am, where I came from - those remain close to heart.“We Ain't Buying It!” is a nationwide movement to pause shopping from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday with major corporations that are enabling the administration's lawlessness: Target, Home Depot & Amazon. In this extended PTSDandBeyond podcast episode, Dr. Deb explores what it truly means to be the good in a world that feels overwhelming, stressful, and emotionally heavy for many people during this season. We talk about supporting someone who is hurting, supporting ourselves when we are hurting, and finding meaning through small acts of presence. Inside this #PTSDandBeyond episode we will find • An exploration of being the good for yourself and for others • Research on stress, trauma responses, and collective care • Global stories of kindness, courage, and quiet human goodness • A trauma informed reflection on fierce compassion • A simple but powerful game you can play with family, friends, or coworkers to reconnect • Deep reflective questions to carry into the season This episode invites listeners to rediscover hope through action, intention, and connection. This week's movie is one small step for LAFSters, one giant leap for LAFSters' kind. We are riding the high of seeing Channing Tatum in his slutty bisexual short sleeved turtlenecks all the way to the moon with our viewing of Fly Me To The Moon (2024). Chelsea and Mads discuss the nostalgia of a country united by scientific progress, the grift of marketing, the importance of funding science, and their unending love for Channing Tatum. Was the moon landing real? Guess you will have to watch and see! What does it mean to truly love the natural world? And what happens when we start listening deeply to it? In this episode, we sit down with author and activist Maria Rodale to explore the themes in her latest book, Love, Nature, Magic: Shamanic Journeys into the Heart of My Garden.A lifelong advocate for organic living and regenerative agriculture, Maria has carried forward her family's legacy as the former CEO and Chairman of Rodale Inc., helping to pioneer the organic movement. In Love, Nature, Magic, she blends memoir and environmental reflection to invite us into a relationship with the living world that's grounded in curiosity and deep mutual respect.Together, we talk about what it means to communicate with plants (literally!), the balance between spirituality and science, and how embracing the so-called “weeds” in our lives can lead to unexpected growth. Maria also shares her perspective on leadership, personal responsibility, and the simple yet radical act of slowing down to reconnect with nature. It's an inspiring, funny, and thought-provoking conversation with one of the leading voices in the movement toward a more conscious, regenerative world.Show NotesMaria RodaleLove, Nature, Magic: Shamanic Journeys Into the Heart of My Garden by Maria RodaleOrganic Manifesto: How Organic Food Can Heal Our Planet, Feed the World, and Keep Us Safe by Maria RodaleMaria's Newsletter on SubstackDoug Tallamy's Hub (Homegrown National Park)Finding the Mother Tree: Discovering the Wisdom of the Forest by Suzanne SimardKeywords: Maria Rodale, Love Nature Magic, biophilia, biophilic design, organic living, regenerative agriculture, gardening, plant communication, environmental spirituality, sustainability, nature connection, leadership, mindfulness, ecological wellness, Doug Tallamy, pollinators, soil health, holistic living, curiosity, slowing down, conscious living, reconnecting with nature, environmental storytelling, personal growth, resilience, intentional livingBiophilic Solutions is available wherever you get podcasts. When we imagine Elizabethan dining tables, we might picture roast meats, trenchers of bread, or tankards of ale. But lurking beneath the surface of rivers, marketplaces, and even the economy itself was a creature so valuable that it could pay rent, feed a nation, and still appear in Shakespeare's humor — the eel. Eels once filled England's rivers in such massive quantities that they became a crucial source of protein for the poor and a delicacy for the wealthy. They appear in legal documents, household accounts, market records, and yes — in Shakespeare's plays. In Love's Labour's Lost, Don Adriano says: "What, that an eel is ingenious?" — Love's Labour's Lost (I.2) Today we'll discover just how ingenious eels really were. This week, I'm speaking with Dr. John Wyatt Greenlee — medievalist, cartographic historian, and the internet's favorite eel enthusiast — to explore the culinary, economic, and cultural world of eels in Shakespeare's England. From eel rents and floating aquarium-ships to eel pies and insult comedy, we're diving into how this slippery fish shaped daily life in the world Shakespeare lived in.

Deep Groove Disco Session — Mixed by The Funk Assassin A journey through modern disco gold and timeless soulful reworks, driven by the unmistakable touch of the genre's finest selectors and remixers. This mix locks you straight into that velvet groove from the opening bars. Expect heavyweight energy from the start — the Antonello Ferrari & Aldo Bergamasco Club Mix of “Relight My Fire” ignites the floor, paving the way for Dr Packer's signature multi-track magic on “Do It To The Music.” Dave Lee's fingerprints run deep throughout: from the Kashif-flavoured tribute on “I'm In Love” to the zoned-in smoothness of “You,” his craftsmanship shapes the heart of this session. Purple Disco Machine's edit of “She Can't Love You” lifts the tempo into that shimmering disco-funk pocket, while Ken@Work flips “Outstanding” into a head-nodding burner. Groovemasta keeps momentum alive with “Still In Love” and “Love Insurance,” locking in a warm, soulful mid-set flow. Closing out in style, Dave Lee's Found a Place Mix of “Come Go With Me” rolls effortlessly into the legendary Larry Levan 12” remix of “I Know You Will” — a perfect homage to the roots that shaped dance culture. This is modern disco done properly: soulful, stylish, and built for dancefloors that know the difference. Stream, share, and turn it up.
Welcome to the '60s, LAFSters! This week, our hosts find themselves in a farcical love triangle between a widower, his new bride, and his not-so-late wife in Move Over, Darling (1963), starring Doris Day, James Garner, and Polly Bergen. Straight people will do anything but communicate, and Chelsea says this film is Exhibit A. Madison expresses concern about the lackadaisical parenting displayed on screen. And both hosts really want to jump in a random taxi for an epically comical car chase.Connect With UsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/loveatfirstscreening/Email: loveatfirstscreening@gmail.comProduction Hosts: Chelsea Ciccone and Madison HillMusic: Good StephArtwork: Chelsea CicconeSocial Media: Marissa CicconeAbout the ShowAn examination of classic tropes and iconic characters pits connoisseur against cynic—one romantic comedy at a time. In this final episode of the three-part series, we explore how healing moves from reflection into action. “What's Next” is about reclaiming agency, aligning choices with values, and noticing the quiet signs of growth that often begin within the body and the nervous system. If you've ever felt almost ready to take the next step but weren't sure where to start, this episode helps you recognize readiness, identify what supports you, and take meaningful steps forward at your own pace. You'll Learn • How “What's Next” represents healing through action and choice • Signs of readiness such as curiosity, openness, and less attachment to the old story • Simple strategies for taking action rooted in research and mindfulness • How to meet fear, perfectionism, and fatigue with compassion • What embodied progress looks and feels like as your system stabilizes and curiosity returns Reflection Prompts What's one thing I'm ready or almost ready to do next What people, practices, or supports can help me move forward How will I notice progress, even in subtle ways Healing is not about speed but direction and alignment. Every small, value-based step reinforces the belief that you can shape your life and live it fully.
In Love, Law, and Lordship, Pastor Ronnie Knight exposes the false divide between loving Jesus and obeying Him. Many today claim to love Christ while living in rebellion against His Word. But true love for Christ always produces obedience, not out of legalism, but out of devotion. This message calls believers to embrace the full lordship of Jesus — loving Him, keeping His commands, and living under His gracious authority.

There's a chill in the air, like a shiver down your spine. Something wicked (Heart Eyes, 2025) this way comes and it isn't only the creepy time of year. Don't look behind you, keep away from that spooky closet, and whatever you do, don't celebrate Valentine's Day with the Heart Eyes Killer on the loose. This week, our hosts venture into the unknown of slasher flicks– but don't worry, love is never far away. We've been known to watch films that fall short of the romantic comedy genre, but this one? This one might just hit the mark, like an arrow through the eye of an unsuspecting camera man or like St. Valentine's sword slicing right through the throat. Has anytime someone told you to “Calm down” made you feel better or did it make you feel LESS calm? That's what I thought. While sometimes hearing those words can help, most of the time it doesn't and the same rings true for our kids. In this episode, I'm going to tell you why saying “Calm down” doesn't actually have the effect we want it to, the message our kids may actually be hearing, instead, and how slightly changing our delivery can make a huge difference in how we respond to and connect with our kids. Today's poem is In Love by Chloe Martinez. The Slowdown is currently taking a break. We'll be back soon with new episodes from a new host. This week, we're revisiting some favorites from Major Jackson's time as host. Today's episode was originally released on July 8, 2024. The Slowdown is your daily poetry ritual. In this episode, Major writes… “The first time I was in love, I started missing baseball practice. Instead, I went to the library. Cherie spent afternoons doing her homework there. I could barely think about anything but her. What an immense feeling, to live with a perennial lump in my chest!” Celebrate the power of poems with a gift to The Slowdown today.
