Seg 1: How ‘mother' became a cultural phenomenon The term “mother” is remarkably consistent across many languages worldwide. In addition to its literal meaning, “mother” has taken on symbolic significance in various cultures and historical contexts. For example, in recent pop culture, the term “mother” has been used as a form of reverence, particularly for powerful female celebrities. The Vancouver Sun's Vaughn Palmer is here with his take on the day's headlines. Seg 4: What's causing the violent riots in the UK? The current violence on the streets of Britain is a clear example of Islamophobia, stemming from misinformation and far-right ideologies.  The violence began after a peaceful vigil for three young girls fatally stabbed in Southport, leading to attacks on the local mosque and those inside.  Despite the refutation of false claims that the perpetrator was a Muslim immigrant, Muslims and mosques continue to be targeted, along with migrant housing. Guest: Dr. Chris Allen, Associate Professor in the School of Criminology at the University of Leicester Seg 5: Just how bad are the abuses to Canada's foreign worker program? Guest: Catherine Connelly, Professor of Human Resources and Management at McMaster University and Author of “Enduring Work: Experiences with Canada's Temporary Foreign Worker Program.” Seg 6: Why was someone allegedly tied to ISIS allowed to immigrate to Canada? The federal government of Canada is reviewing its security screening process following the arrest of Ahmed Fouad Mostafa Eldidi and his son Mostafa Eldidi, who are accused of planning an attack in Toronto. Ahmed, a Canadian citizen, and his son, who does not have citizenship, face multiple charges, including conspiracy to commit murder for the benefit of ISIS. Guest: Mackenzie Gray, Senior Correspondent for Global News National Seg 7: Should the province appoint an Integrity Commissioner to oversee local governments? Guest: Nadine Nakagawa, New Westminster City Councillor Seg 8: Why are rates of HIV/AIDS rising in Canada? Dr. Julio Montaner is urging governments worldwide to adopt a comprehensive strategy to reduce HIV-related deaths and infections. His call follows new research published in the Lancet HIV journal, demonstrating that antiretroviral treatment (ART) for all HIV-positive individuals and preventive treatment (PrEP) for high-risk individuals can reduce deaths and new infections by over 90%. Seg 1: We finally know why orcas are sinking ships In 2020, sailors near the Iberian peninsula reported orcas engaging with boats in alarming ways, such as ramming and disabling vessels. Over 670 interactions were documented, involving about 15 orcas, leading to severe damage in about a fifth of the cases and the sinking of six boats. Experts concluded these were not attacks but possibly playful behaviours or a cultural fad among the orcas. These findings highlight the complexities of studying orca behaviour, as their large, highly developed brains and social structures make them capable of such activities. Episode 39 opens with Marty Gold telling his personal stories of 3 people who have recently passed away- Maggie Roulette of Amaranth, Dr. Monte Kowall, and former newsman and voice of Assiniboia Downs, Jim Farrell. 15:30 Part 2- Guest Kelly Ryback has his own Jim Farrell story to tell before we pick up on his previous interview on Episode 37. 18.30 Ryback tells about the impact of bike lanes on parents and working families needing to use a car, but worse, how they also interfere with emergency vehicles. He says it's an example of "an ideology that doesn't work". Ryback springs the news that yet ANOTHER fire station- in the core area!- would be handcuffed by a marginal pet project of the bike lobby. More proof there's no consultation with EMS or hospital officials and "no consideration about the businesses in place, again eliminating parking. The idea everybody's going to take the bus or take their bike, it's not going to happen." A listener reminded us of one of the first bike lane inventions in 2010, in Lord Roberts, so stupidly planned the South Osborne Residents Group and the fire department forced the city to change it. Are one-sided plans being approved because councilors fear displeasing the small army of bike acolytes? Their own voters feel shunned. 26.10- CBC had the nerve to claim a report enthusiastically endorsing safe injection sites and "safe supply" was independent. You'll hear the proof that was a lie. Ryback, who's a supporter of the Bruce Oake Recovery Centre, says politicians make big promises but cannot get a grip on hunger, addictions, and poverty. Despite the rah-rah in the report, he explains how safe injection sites have been closed because of the disorder and crime the locations can attract. The discussion turns to the need for rehab on one side, and effective crackdowns on criminal dealers and distributors. Although the NDP government says "safe supply" isn't on the table, the enabler faction in health care isn't going to take no for an answer - despite the failure in BC where ODs and crime have skyrocketed. We tell of a BC MLA that the RCMP tried to stifle, after she figured out that half of drug seizures were free drugs the government gave out- some with forged subscriptions. Then there's vending machines. Coming to Winnipeg? * Comments/ news tips/ Interac donations- Email martygoldlive@gmail.com 42:00 Part 3 - More about the quality of life in your community. Ryback insists all revenue from government pot should be going to treatment. Bottom-priced hard drugs created a flood of addicts with hazardous behavior that threatens cops, first responders, and innocent neighbours. He believes bail conditions and drug sentences are far too lenient but reducing addictions and crime won't go down without enforcement. 48.30- The Jets owners are looking into transitional housing plans for downtown. Should it go near a safe injection site? How about the Market Lands across from City Hall? The discontinuance of Greyhound Bus services, CFT cutting kids loose when they turned 18, have placed vulnerable people in peril. Ryback goes through the city poverty rates- and children are double the national average. Aboriginal and First Nations communities needed special attention- But former Mayor Brian Bowman didn't want to hear of it. 1:02:52 BONUS AUDIO- In Ryback's previous interview, he said the attitude problem of some councilors towards delegations presenting briefs contradicting their views was poisoning civic engagement. One of our listeners relayed that they had similar bad treatment from Councilor Rollins but was doing something about it- and had filed a formal complaint with the Integrity Commissioner. In this overtime segment, Ryback responds to hearing the news about the ruling being sought: Are delegations allowed to publicly inform councilors of proven methods to supervise contracts and monitor spending? Or, can they be silenced by councilors wielding their political sword?

Only ActionLine.ca brought taxpayers the comments of Andrew Marquess, after a Manitoba court awarded him $5 million following his battle to get Parker Lands housing approved. The ruling cited that City of Winnipeg planners engaged in “misfeasance in public office” against Gem Equities, and according to King's Bench Justice Shauna McCarthy: "The evidence is also clear, in my view, that the impetus and motivation for this deliberate interference with the plaintiffs' applications were primarily the wishes and demands of the area councillor, and the desire of some public servants to accommodate those wishes.” After our review of the Court findings- There's 101 Reasons Why Winnipeg Council Must Review Orlikow's Role In $5M Court Ruling - a formal complaint was filed by former Mayoral candidate Don Woodstock alleging that Coun. John Orlikow breached the City Code of Conduct. The complaint was referred to an Edmonton lawyer, Jamie Pytel, because Integrity Commissioner Sherri Walsh declared she had a conflict of interest involving Orlikow. According to her bio, Pytel "conducts investigations for municipalities that do not have an Integrity Commissioner and gives advice on issues involving Codes of Conduct for elected officials." Woodstock says that on Nov. 20, Pytel told him she "would be in touch if you needed further information or have further information for me." Last week, Woodstock asked her where the investigation was at. And the answer was, nowhere. Chip in now to support our public affairs investigations paypal.com/paypalme/MartyGoldMedia 7:05 Part 2- Woodstock emailed Pytel on January 10 and asked, "Have you read the ruling in the Gem Equities/Andrew Marquess case?" He also asked, "Now that Councillor John Orlikow is back on the job, is he now free to continue his ways that has lead the City of Winnipeg to lose a lawsuit that stated the City owes Gem Equities $5M of taxpayers' dollars...?" While the second question could be seen as provocative, the first was entirely legitimate. Instead of answering Woodstock, Pytel replied: "Perhaps we can schedule a virtual meeting or phone call to discuss the status of this matter." Something else Pytel said caught Marty Gold's attention. She claimed "this is a confidential process." He describes his own experiences with government complaint processes - and how what she told Woodstock simply isn't accurate. To send in story tips, sponsor podcasts, or contribute support by Interac: martygoldlive@gmail.com 20:04 - You'll hear how the next morning, Woodstock refused to consider a phone call with Pytel. With taxpayers footing her bill - and presumably Orlikow's - he insisted "this requires everything to have open communication, honesty, integrity and with full disclosure as to the status, outcome and remedies." That afternoon, Pytel informed Woodstock that, "I am suspending this matter until all proceedings regarding the legal action are exhausted to ensure that all parties may participate fully in a Code of Conduct investigation." As Marty explains, that might seem like a decision made in response to being pressed for an update on her activities. And, it's a pretty handy excuse to stall the complaint, considering that the Court of Appeal can't do anything to erase the emails, documents, depositions, testimony and other evidence about Orlikow's conduct. He is not a party to the proceedings as he was not a defendant, and the Judge did not mention the Code of Conduct. So, we wonder, did Pytel even read the ruling? She made a point of not answering Woodstock's question. And if the appeal was an issue, why didn't she think of it on August 31st when the City filed it? More background: Marquess explained the attempt by City Hall to manipulate the Parker Lands valuations, and a pending expropriation may put the City on the hook for another $90 million. More with Andrew Marquess, Newsmaker of the Year JOIN OUR FACEBOOK GROUP https://www.facebook.com/groups/TGCTS

Our podcast discussing the behind-the-scenes conduct of Councilor John Orlikow with City officials thwarting a developer's plans, brought action from listeners, and re-action from one of Orlikow's supporters on City Council. Last week listeners heard directly from the King's Bench court decision, a $5M ruling that two City of Winnipeg planners acted outside of their authority to stall and delay development applications from Andrew Marquess for the Parker Lands project. Justice Shawna McCarthy wrote: "the impetus and motivation for this deliberate interference with the plaintiffs' applications were primarily the wishes and demands of the area councillor, and the desire of some public servants to accommodate those wishes.” ( Here is our report: There's 101 Reasons Why Winnipeg Council Must Review Orlikow's Role In $5M Court Ruling ) In Episode 39 this week, the controversy heats up - Orlikow told the media he "will keep an open mind" as Marquess and Gem Equities proceed with the Fulton Grove plan. But one resident who heard our report laid a formal complaint against Orlikow - with the City Integrity Commissioner, Sherri Walsh. "John Orlikow should be thoroughly investigated by your commission and during this period of investigation, which should have already started, he should recuse himself from any vote, decision, action as it relates to the Parker Lands' Development. He has lost all his integrity & credibility with respect to this Developer Led project." In Part One, you'll hear the complaint that was sent to council overseer Sherri Walsh, the movie character Orlikow was compared to, and the stern admonition in the complaint directed to Mayor Scott Gillingham by one of his opponents last fall, Don Woodstock. Then came the reaction to our report, and to Woodstock's complaint. 14:55 - Part 2 - Emails from Mynarski Coun. Ross Eadie claimed Orlikow should face no consequences: To Marty Gold: "if a councillor cites issues where the city could get ripped off by private sector capitalists, they are doing their job – thanks John."  To the complainant, copied to Walsh and fellow council members: "Give it up Mr. Woodstock." Eadie had a few more comments in those emails you will want to hear, about some Parker Land history and also about Marquess. His remarks are sure to generate even more discussion about how John Orlikow and City Hall handle developers, and what the Court ruled was and wasn't legal in the process. Please share this 25 minute podcast! We encourage the public to be informed of the evidence in the case- and to let their councilors and Mayor Gillingham know what they think should be done to hold the planners, city administration, and Coun. Legislators have sought passage of a Foreign Agents Registration Act similar to a law enacted by the United States in 1938, according to Blacklock's Reporter. “To deal with threats to national security we need agencies to be inclusive, diverse and culturally sensitive so Canadians can have trust and confidence that as we are taking actions to mitigate against threats to national security they believe we are consistently going to act in the national interest,” said Mendicino. The Bill Kelly Show Podcast: Ontario's health minister says the government isn't changing course on its reopening plan despite a recent rise in COVID-19 infections. Health Minister Christine Elliott says a bump in cases was anticipated during the colder weather as people move indoors, and that was factored into the province's plans. Elliott said if restrictions are reintroduced it will be by region and most likely led by local medical officers of health because they have the best knowledge of their areas and what must be done. Do we need to consider adjusting our public health restrictions? GUEST: Dr. Prabhat Jha, Epidemiologist and Professor of Global Health with the University of Toronto, and Founding Director of the Centre for Global Health Research at St. Michael's Hospital - Hamilton's integrity commissioner says Terry Whitehead should lose a month of pay after finding the Mountain city councillor bullied city staff in a meeting about traffic on Aberdeen Avenue, and that he should be restricted in which staffers he deals with directly. Principles Integrity, the firm given the role of integrity commissioner, says Whitehead was antagonistic and hostile toward a senior staffer in discussing the reconfiguration of the west-end road, which Whitehead says has slowed down commuters from Ward 14. At the Sept. 11, 2020, meeting, the report says, Whitehead delivered a series of antagonistic questions at a chief road official. If something similar had been in court, the report says, it would be seen as "witness badgering." GUEST: Laura Babcock, President of PowerGroup - Big Bird ruffled some conservatives' feathers this weekend by announcing that he had been vaccinated against COVID-19.
