2023 is nearing its end but our episodes are not. Take a deep breath, it's time for A Mental Health Break with Renzo Del Castillo. Areas discussed include:-overcoming loss and change in relationships-competing with yourself-mental health benefits from traveling -creating a legacy for his family-the mindset needed to transform from childhood obesity to excellent health-being consistent in lifeRenzo Del Castillo was born in Lima, Peru, in 1983, and was educated at the University of Florida, leaving with a B.A. in English, specializing in Victorian Literature, and an M.A. in Mass Communications, specializing in Intercultural Communications. Renzo currently resides in Miami, but he prioritizes traveling to experience and be exposed to the tenets of other cultures. He strongly believes that it is through art that we find the divinity of truth, the pathway of communication with others; and that through this connection we are made whole. About his book Still: Still is a collection of poems that focuses on the immigrant experience: a family's journey from Lima, Peru to Miami, Florida as political refugees and asylum seekers and the impact that had on the life of a boy as he grew into a man. Renzo Del Castillo's poems often reveal larger moral concerns, touching in their language the world of politics and betrayal that cannot help but impose upon the world of private language. There is a lovely and intimate tone, used to remind the reader that imagination triumphs over, or sometimes through, adversity.Have a question for a guest or host? After a 25-year relationship, Rosie Aiello, engineered an international escape from the Middle East to save her young adult daughter and herself from domestic violence. Stunned by PTSD and nearly mentally destroyed, she reinvented herself since arriving back in the United States, started her own business, and became a speaker, best-selling co-author and an international awarding-winning entrepreneur. And found the “kind” love of her life. With her Freedom Fulfillment Foundation system, Rosie helps women worldwide reclaim their voice, value, confidence, and courage so that they can create the joyful and productive life that they deserve, in both their personal life, and in work. She is on a global movement to inspire 100 million + women and their children to release the shackles of abuse so that they can reclaim their lives, to believe that they deserve to be treated with kindness—because this is the foundation for their empowerment. She is on a mission to create kinder intimate relationships, kinder families, kinder communities and therefore, a kinder world. It's a win-win-win. To help with that mission she created National Love is Kind Day, observed on July 27th to celebrate that real love is kind. It's not cruel, it's caring. It's not terrorizing, it's tender, it's not threatening, it's safe. Rosie and her daughter Sunny will be sharing their powerful story of escape, healing and freedom in their joint upcoming memoir entitled: 11 Hours to Freedom. In this conversation we get to hear the story of her marriage, the realisation that this was not how love is supposed to be and the subsequent escape to the United States from Lebanon. We cover “how did you not know?” and “why did you stay so long?”. We delve into what is a narcissist and how do they fool so many people, including those closest to them?Rosie shares how therapy, self-care and setting boundaries have helped both her and her daughter to realise how much they deserve kind and compassionate love. And how they are striving to help millions of women and children to find their freedom and their voices. Some of this content may be triggering. It is a really important conversation to have and I hope it will help anyone in the situation and anyone trying to help a friend or a family member in a similar situation. You can find Rosie on www.theloveiskindnetwork.comOn Twitter - @loveiskindtweetOn Instagram - @rosieaiello_loveiskindOn LinkedIn – Rosie Aiello, MBAPodcast – Vulnerable to Valuable https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/vulnerable-to-valuable/id1528869606Rosie is a frequent guest on live stages, podcasts and radio shows, including appearances on the BBC . She thrives in the weird (uncertain) space between a big idea and the final product. Today’s Mindful Expat Guest is Sundae Schneider-Bean! Sundae is an intercultural strategist and solution-oriented coach, and – as she says –she’s on a mission to help expats make the most of their lives abroad! Sundae is originally from the United States, from the state of North Dakota. Even before meeting her Swiss husband and launching on a series of international moves with him, Sundae had a thirst for international adventure. In her early 20s, she traveled extensively throughout south-east Asia, where she met her husband in Vietnam – which then led her to move to Switzerland. After a number of years together there, they then moved to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, where they stayed until in 2016 when the political situation and lack of security in the region made it no longer safe to remain – at which point they relocated to South Africa, where they now live with their 2 children. Sundae has her masters in Intercultural Communications and is a Certified Coach with the International Coaching Federation. Her experiences of living and working across cultures, being in an intercultural marriage, and raising bicultural TCK children makes her no stranger to the challenges – and opportunities – of expat life. As an intercultural strategies and coach, she works to help other expats navigate these challenges and learn to thrive in their lives abroad and make the most of their experiences. What you’ll hear in this episode: • Debunking some common myths about the cultural adjustment process and how believing these myths can be detrimental to our wellbeing and adjustment as we adapt to a new culture. • How there is no one “right” way to move through the the process of cultural adjustment and some of the factors (personal and contextual) that can impact what this process looks like. • How our expectations can shape our experience — for example, by making us either more or less patient with ourselves as we move through the cultural adaptation process. • How “culture shock” isn’t necessarily a bad thing — and how we can use it as an opportunity to increase our own self-awareness. • The importance of self-acceptance and self-compassion (rather than being harsh and critical toward ourselves) as we adjust to a new culture. Resources mentioned in this episode: • We mentioned the U-Curve and W-Curve Models of cultural adjustment. To learn more about these models, you can check out this blog post or listen back to Episode 5. • Sundae mentioned sleep expert Christine Hanson. To learn more about her and her work, you can check out her website, www.sleeplikeaboss.com. • Sundae mentioned the website Culture Connector, where you can take a free assessment to learn more about your own cultural preferences as well as the cultural preferences of the country in which you’re living. As we discuss, this can be a great way to become aware of some potential differences so that when you run into them in your daily life, you can understand the source of the disconnect. • Sundae recommended two Facebook groups as helpful resources: I Am a Triangle (mentioned back in Episode 10 with the founder of this group, Naomi Hattaway) and Grumpy Expat. • Sundae also recommended two blogs focused on expat issues: Kirsty Rice’s blog, 4 Kids, 20 Suitcases, & a Beagle, and Jerry Jones’ blog The Culture Blend. More about Sundae and how to follow up with her: To learn more about Sundae, you can visit her website, www.sundaebean.com. There you will find information about Sundae’s coaching and consulting services (which she describes in more detail toward the end of the episode) as well a blog with great articles on a number of helpful topics — from couples issues to resiliency to expat vacations! On the website, you’ll also find Sundae’s podcast, Expat Happy Hour, where she covers topics related to expat adjustment and offers practical solutions to help you more effectively navigate the cultural adaptation process. You can also find Sundae on Facebook or Twitter, and you can email her directly at sundae@sundaebean.com. Stay in Touch! Much of the hype around crowdfunding has frustratingly proved to be so much hot air. The United Nations Global Compact and the U.S. State Department are working to change that by bringing crowdfunding forward to finance projects in the developing world, especially projects designed to address the social problems endemic there. U.S.-based crowdfunding site Gate Global Impact is partnering with the UN Global Compact to launch Gateway 2.0, a site that will allow members of the UN Global Compact’s Social Enterprise Hub to access capital of from $500,000 to $10 million. Rosedel Davies-Adewebi, project manager for social enterprise and impact investing at the UN Global Compact, explained that through this innovative partnership the UN Global Compact hopes to advance this form of equity crowdfunding as a new approach to impact investing, addressing gaps in the missing middle of finance and connect capital to impactful businesses addressing critical areas related to the UN-Post 2015 agenda. Similarly, the U.S. State Department will soon launch a partnership with the crowdfunding site RocketHub to accelerate social impact projects from 60 countries around the world. Molinari will be speaking at the Social Enterprise and Crowdfunding Conference, which I a organizing, on September 26, 2014 at Snowbird (secfc.co). More about the UN Global Compact: The UN Global Compact is a strategic policy initiative for businesses that are committed to aligning their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. Endorsed by chief executives, the Global Compact is a practical framework for the development, implementation, and disclosure of sustainability policies and practices, offering participants a wide spectrum of workstreams, management tools and resources — all designed to help advance sustainable business models and markets. To further promote the advancement of sustainable business models, the UN Global Compact has launched a workstream focused on the concepts of Social Enterprise and Impact investing. The aim of the workstream is to build an enabling environment for corporations within the Global Compact, investors and social enterprises that will facilitate the formation of partnerships designed to advance innovations addressing development challenges. Davies-Adewebi’s bio: Rosedel Davies-Adewebi is the Project Manager for the Social Enterprise and Impact Investing workstream of the United Nations Global Compact. The workstream is designed to build an enabling environment to support the formation of partnerships among social enterprises, corporations and investors . The partnerships have the aim to advance innovations addressing global development challenges. At the UN Global Compact, Rosedel is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the workstream and leading its operations globally. Rosedel has spent the last eight years developing programs and managing projects designed to connect social innovators with financing and technical assistance to scale impact. Prior to joining the UN Global Compact, she served as a consultant on impact measurement data to the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN).
