We have all seen God working in our lives, however, we might not all be aware it is God who is working in our lives.  This is why it is so important we start talking about it more.  The more we share our experiences the more people understand how God works and how much He truly loves us.  If you would be willing to share any experience you have had of how God has worked or is working your life, please email me at catherine@findingtruenorthcoaching.com or just click here.  It won't take up much of your time and your story could be just the story that someone needs to hear today.  Prayerfully consider sharing.  Everyone has a story and the world needs to hear them.  I look forward to spending time with you again tomorrow and I will have another witness for you next Wednesday.  Remember Jesus loves you and so do I. Have a blessed day!Open DoorsI was talking with God this morning about what I should witness about today and I felt like He said open doors.  He reminded me on the time leading up to our wedding.  Tony was in the Air Force and he was assigned at Fairchild AFB near Spokane, WA.  He was coming home a few days before the wedding and then we were going to drive cross country for our honeymoon.  We were getting married at his parent's church in Hartford and then our reception was going to be at a VFW not too far from there.  Tony's parents had bought land and built a house in Pomfret, CT, which is only 10 minutes or so from my parents house.  I went to visit them often before the wedding.  One night was I going over for dinner and they had very serious looks on their faces.  I could tell something was wrong.  They told me I should have a seat.  I thought they were going to tell me something had happened to Tony.  Luckily, Tony was fine.  Instead they told me that the roof had blown off of the VFW during the last storm we had and it wouldn't be repaired in time for our wedding.  I believe this was the beginning of June and our wedding was July 1st.  I had no idea what we were going to do.  I called Tony to let him know and also because he is a great problem solver.  He talked to his dad and between the two of them they had a new place picked out that night.  His dad played cards at the Polish American Club in Newington and they didn't have anything planned for that day so they said we could use it.  It was amazing how quickly God opened all of those doors.  It turned out it was actually  a much better place to have the reception because it had air conditioning and the other place did not.  It was so hot that day that the cake frosting was melting on the way to decorate the reception hall and we got there around 8 A. M.  The next memory God brought to mind about opening doors was my Master's Degree program.  I had gotten my bachelor's degree in psychology because in CT you couldn't get a degree in education, you had to get a different degree and then be accepted into the education program there.  That would have been an extra year of schooling and I didn't get accepted.  Which again was a blessing because Tony and I would have been separated that whole year since he was already in Washington at his new job.  It is amazing how God works in all these little details.  Sometimes we feel awful or we feel sad or angry that something didn't work out and then we find out later the reason it didn't work out and it all makes sense.  Since I didn't get into the education program while getting my undergraduate degree I started to look at Master's Degree programs near where we lived.  I found a program in Special Education that was a one year accelerated program.  That meant you went to school five quarters, summer, fall, winter, spring, summer and then you got your Master's Degree of Education in Special Education.  This program only accepted 10 students at a time as it was a couple that ran the program and they couldn't oversea too many people's thesis'.  It's funny again, looking back how God is in the details.  This was a one year accelerated program, but what we didn't know at the time, but God did, was that Tony was going to get orders to move in the spring and that if it had been a traditional 2 year program I wouldn't have been able to finish it, or I would have had to stay in WA for a year while my husband was in Turkey.  Wow, I am just realizing how crazy it is that it worked out like that.  That timing isn't even the thing about the program  I was planning to witness about.  It was just revealed to me as I was typing.  Another extraordinary thing that happened with my program is that I got a call about a week before school was going to start.  It was from one of the two advisors for this program.  She said she noticed my undergraduate degree was in psychology and was wondering if I wanted to intern for her and her husband while I was in the program.  She said it would just be 10-20 hours a week and it would be gather data for them and doing research reviews.  For instance if they were doing a study the other girl and I would go to the library and research all the articles that pertained to the topic.  We would look through them and give my advisors any that were good and talked about exactly what they needed.  We also went to some schools and evaluated their direct interaction classes they had going on.  She said if I wanted to do this, they would pay for my tuition and give me a weekly stipend.  I was so surprised!  She wanted to pay for me to get my Master's Degree and then also pay me a paycheck each week.  God is so good!  One last witness for today as to how much smarter God is than we are was how He helped me select a college.  I knew I wanted to be a teacher and I knew Eastern Connecticut State University had a great education program.  However, the boy I was dating in High School was going to Seton Hall University in New Jersey, so naturally I wanted to follow him to New Jersey.  I applied to two schools in New Jersey and I got accepted to both of them.  I even received a large financial aid package as my parents still have 4 kids living at home and one other one in college already.  Even though I got a large financial aid package, the school was out of state so it would have been $20,000 a year, which today probably seems like nothing.  I had received $14,000 in financial aid with pell grants and work study.  This would mean I would need to pay $6,000.  That might not seem like a lot, especially with how expensive schools are right now, but there was no way I or my parents could pay $6,000.  My guidance counselor at school said I had received a $2,000 scholarship that would help with some of that $6,000.  But still I didn't have the $4,000.  I was disappointed but then I got the financial aid packet from ECSU and I would not have to pay anything out of pocket, I would just need to take the standard subsidized loans each year.  I was able to get my undergraduate degree with only having about ten to fifteen thousand total in student loans and as I mentioned above my Master's degree was free.  God is so good.  Another reason this is a witness to how God's ways are higher than our ways is because my high school boyfriend and I broke up.  We were together for four years so of course at that age you think you will get married.  However, God knew what He had planned for me.  My roommate at ECSU was in ROTC and they had bring a friend night.  This is where i met Tony.  If I had gone to school in New Jersey I might not have met him.  Although with his parents moving close to my parents I am sure if I had messed up God's plan and gone to New Jersey than He would have found another way for us to meet.  He is that good.  There is no messing up God's plan, there is just delaying it.Well, I really enjoyed walking down memory lane with you this morning.  I keep thinking I will run out of things to witness about and God keeps showing me new ways that He was there and I didn't realize it at the time.  He is so good like that!  God is in the details of your life too.  There is a reason you didn't get that job or that relationship didn't work out.  There is a reason your plan didn't work out.  God's ways are higher than our ways.  He knows so much more than we do and He can look into the future and help us make decisions today that set us up for a better tomorrow.  My challenge to you today is to think back to a time where you were disappointed with how something turned out and then try and see if you can see why it happened.  Does it make more sense now with the benefit of hindsight?  I hope you all have an amazing week!

Now that Mr. Biden is halfway through his presidential term, we want to find his place in US history. In other words, we want to weigh his presidency against prior US presidents. For example, how do Mr. Biden's successes or failures stack up against his predecessors? How does his age compare to prior US presidents? I know that's a big concern for lots of people. And related to that, here is another question: have any former US presidents died of old age while in office? How about classified documents? Has that been an issue with other sitting presidents? Also, there is the matter of the Democratic Party itself. Would Andrew Jackson, the first president of the Democratic Party, recognize President Biden's democratic party? How about FDR - a more modern Democratic President? Would he recognize President Biden's Democratic Party? Would either of them vote for a Biden second term? To learn more about this history, and to get some insights into what's happening now, in our present moment, I spoke to Dr. Thomas J. Balcerski. He is a visiting professor in US History at Occidental College, also known as Oxy, where he teaches courses on U.S. Presidents and First Ladies as well as the history of the Democratic Party, from Thomas Jefferson to Joe Biden. In addition to Oxy, Dr. Balcerski is a professor of American history at Eastern Connecticut State University. What does it take to be successful in sales for the IT industry? Tim Arpin, Regional Sales Manager for NY/NJ at Service Express, a data center maintenance company, has a candid conversation with Phil and Nabeel about the world of sales — the good and the bad — and what he loves about providing value through consultative sales for the data center industry. Arpin always had a natural proclivity for sales. While in his teens he started selling golf equipment in a sporting goods store. He then worked at Enterprise Rent-A-Car as a sales manager and went on to do sales and business development for several firms. A former manager from Enterprise invited Arpin to join him at Service Express as a senior account manager.  He soon realized how attractive the IT industry was: “IT sales now is like pharmaceutical sales in the eighties and nineties…there's a lot of success to be had, a lot of growth in the industry…a lot of IT spend, with lots of companies looking for salespeople.”  Arpin became conversant with the technical aspects of the industry through a combination of online research, on-the-job training, and developing relationships with clients and vendors. Arpin speaks with pride about his work helping to support his company and their customers. He shares his commitment to sales as a profession — how he is in it not just for financial rewards, but also to solve problems, find value, and build relationships.  He references the book “Selling with Noble Purpose: How to Drive Revenue and Do Work That Makes You Proud” by Lisa Earle McCleod which emphasizes the importance of finding your reason, the “why” behind your selling, and believing that what you're selling is providing value and having impact. “The consultative process of sales is an art form…the need to become a high-level consultative seller has forced me to become a better salesperson — a better listener, a better relationship builder, a better problem solver.” In terms of advice, Arpin highlights the importance of staying current and actively pursuing knowledge. He also recommends attending industry events where one can make or deepen relationships with vendors, colleagues, and end users. “AFCOM has by far been the most beneficial for me…I get to walk through the latest data and learn…there's always guest speakers and different companies talking about their products…that stuff's invaluable.” He shares the following insight: “The biggest thing that helped me honestly, was just conversations with end users when I didn't know something. Being open to admitting that and asking them to explain it to me, because I wanted to learn.” Tim Arpin is the Regional Sales Manager for the New York/New Jersey Market for Service Express, a third-party Data Center Maintenance Provider. Arpin has been with Service Express for over four years and has fifteen years of sales experience starting with a job selling golf equipment at a local Sports Authority store while he was in high school. Arpin manages a team of eight sellers and lives in North Jersey. He has a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration/Marketing from Eastern Connecticut State University.

He worked as a social studies teacher for the town of Groton for some 20 years, where he is often fondly remembered for playing piano for his students. Russ also served as President of the New London Central Labor Council in 1967 while representing the Groton Teacher's Union. Russ was an avid traveler, often with various members of his family, always with his wife. He visited over 60 countries and every state in the union consistently making new friends wherever he went. While there, he would pursue other interests such as rock and mineral hounding or genealogy. Russ traced his line back to multiple Mayflower passengers and to Charlemagne. Russ played the piano and performed many weekends in local bands. At home he enjoyed listening to all kinds of music and sharing his huge musical selection with anyone wanting to listen. He was an avid fan of the UCONN huskies, particularly the women's basketball team whom he watched in person attending their home games and following them to several Final Fours. Russell Stewart was an amazing man who touched the lives of countless people. He will be dearly missed by his wife of 65 years, his sons, his daughter, his half sister, many family members, and all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Prof. Balcerski shares the surprisingly circuitous history of America's celebration of the 4th of July. America's Independence Day has been on the news. One reason is that President Biden set a goal for at least 70% of Americans to get one Covid vaccine shot, which he did not achieve. Another reason, a more complicated one, is that some have brought focus to the importance and meaning of the 4th of July, which doesn't seem all that out of place, given last year's pandemic crisis, BLM protests, a contested presidential election and the January 6th insurrection. As it turns out, the history of the 4th of July is not that straightforward. For example, it took about a century for the recognition of our Independence Day as a federal holiday. And for some 80 years after the Civil war, some parts of the South, including Vicksburg, did not celebrate the 4th of July. It took WWII to create a new sense of nationalism, including the national celebration of the 4th of July. To better understand the history of our Independence Day, we spoke with Professor, an associate professor of history at Eastern Connecticut State University, where he teaches classes on early American history, African American history, and US presidents and first ladies. In addition, Professor Balcerski is a frequent contributor to CNN, the Washington Post, NBC, and other news organizations. This week he published an opinion on CNN, in which he talked about this week's release of C-SPAN's 2021 Historians Survey of Presidential Leadership. In addition to the fact he was one of the 142 historians who participated in this survey, he also authored a book on President James Buchanan… which is highly relevant to the C-SPAN survey because James Buchanan is ranked as our country's worst president. The knee of a police officer placed on the neck of an African American man for longer than 8 minutes - in broad daylight, brazenly in full view of a cell phone camera. How did we get here? How have previous U.S. Presidents handled violence against African Americans? How have they reacted to high-profile criminal proceedings involving Black people? And how does President Biden's handling of the killing of George Floyd and Derek Chauvin's trial hold up against our prior presidents? So that we better understand our present, Thomas Balcerski, a professor of American history and a frequent contributor to CNN, NBC and Washington Post provides us with perspective from the past by taking us on a journey - at times a discomfiting one – through America's history. Tune in to ThePeel.news podcast as Professor Balcerski teaches us that free African Americans were snatched from the North into the slavery of the South. He brings this story to life through the example of the Academy Award-winning film "12 Years A Slave". From this antebellum period, he informs of the post-Civil War atrocities of the Ku Klux Klan and how President Grant and his DOJ crushed them, only for white supremacy to come back in a different form, with a different name. We learn from Professor Balcerski the heart-wrenching story of Emmett Till - a murdered African American teenager - and his intrepid mother's determination for all the world to know, and to see, what happened to her boy. We compare the responses of Presidents Eisenhower and Obama to the murders of teenage African Americans. Finally, we are reminded that George Floyd's death was not the first time that police violence against African Americans was recorded.... for all Americans to see. Here's a hint: Rodney King. The friendship of the bachelor politicians James Buchanan (1791-1868) of Pennsylvania and William Rufus King (1786-1853) of Alabama has excited much speculation through the years. Why did neither marry? Might they have been gay? Or was their relationship a nineteenth-century version of the modern-day "bromance"? In Bosom Friends: The Intimate World of James Buchanan and William Rufus King, Thomas J. Balcerski explores the lives of these two politicians and discovers one of the most significant collaborations in American political history. He traces the parallels in the men's personal and professional lives before elected office, including their failed romantic courtships and the stories they told about them. Unlikely companions from the start, they lived together as congressional messmates in a Washington, DC, boardinghouse and became close confidantes. Around the nation's capital, the men were mocked for their effeminacy and perhaps their sexuality, and they were likened to Siamese twins. Over time, their intimate friendship blossomed into a significant cross-sectional political partnership. Balcerski examines Buchanan's and King's contributions to the Jacksonian political agenda, manifest destiny, and the increasingly divisive debates over slavery, while contesting interpretations that the men lacked political principles and deserved blame for the breakdown of the union. He closely narrates each man's rise to national prominence, as William Rufus King was elected vice-president in 1852 and James Buchanan the nation's fifteenth president in 1856, despite the political gossip that circulated about them. While exploring a same-sex relationship that powerfully shaped national events in the antebellum era, Bosom Friends demonstrates that intimate male friendships among politicians were--and continue to be--an important part of success in American politics.-Thomas J. Balcerski is an Assistant Professor of History at Eastern Connecticut State University. He holds a B.A. from Cornell University, an M.A. from SUNY Stony Brook, and a Ph. D. from Cornell University. Paola, 19, has lived most of her life in the U.S. after being brought from El Salvador by her mother when she was a child. She received deferred action in 2016 and Tuesday was her first day of classes at UMass Boston. Photo by Shannon Dooling for WBUR In Vermont, suicides account for 89 percent of gun-related deaths. Why is that percentage so high, and what’s being done to lower the risk? Also, we learn how the region is reacting to President Trump’s decision to end the DACA program. And we explore the wide variety of accents that color the speech of New Englanders and how those sounds are changing. Finally, we wade into an offshore war between Maine and New Hampshire and visit a summer camp with a colonial flair. It’s NEXT! Photo by Ryan Caron King for WNPR We've been hearing the voices of young people around New England whose future is very uncertain. About 15,000 immigrants in our region have been granted temporary status under the program known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. The Obama-era initiative allows young people whose parents brought them to the country illegally to live and work in the United States. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Tuesday that the government will phase out the DACA program. Many elected officials have reacted sharply toward that decision and four New England States have joined a lawsuit in support of DACA recipients. As reporter Shannon Dooling found, this news came at a difficult time for many students. She went to the University of Massachusetts-Boston on the first day of school with this report. Cragin’s Gun Shop in Rutland, Vt. primarily serves hunters. Owner John Cragin said suicide is a tricky issue – but if he has any doubts about selling someone a gun, he won’t make the sale. Photo by Liam Elder-Connors for VPR For many people in Vermont, guns are a way of life. Unlike more populous, more urban states in our region, Vermonters own guns at a higher rate and fiercely protect their gun rights. That means looser gun laws than in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island — but also a higher rate of gun deaths per capita than in those states. Vermont Public Radio wanted to look into the numbers behind this reality and found some surprising data and personal stories. Four hundred twenty people died from gunshot wounds in Vermont between 2011 and 2016. Eighty-nine percent of those deaths were suicides. Data visualization by Taylor Dobbs for Vermont Public Radio Our guest Taylor Dobbs is the digital reporter at Vermont Public Radio, and he produced the reporting project “Gunshots: Vermont Gun Deaths, 2011-2016.” We’re also joined by Matthew Miller, M.D., a professor of health sciences and Epidemiology at Northeastern University and co-director of the Harvard Injury Control Research Center. VPR has made the death certificate data gathered for the project public. See the spreadsheet here. The Shifting New England Accent The Netflix prison drama “Orange is the New Black” features a woman with a Boston-flavored accent. In fact, this character's way of talking is a little more complicated than that, and so is her story. Developing that sound brought actress Yael Stone to Boston. There, she met up with WBUR’s Sarah Rose Brenner, who has this report. Dropped Rs and long As can be heard, of course, not only in Boston but across much of New England. But in a 2012 paper published in the Journal of American Speech, Dartmouth College linguist James Stanford and his colleagues make the case that a classic New England accent is receding. Can you spot the dialect division in this bagel shop menu? From the (now closed) Bagel Basement in Hanover, New Hampshire. Courtesy of James Stanford In a study currently under peer review, Stanford and his partners used an online crowd-sourcing tool to reach over 600 speakers around the region. This big data set allowed them to tease out subtle differences in the way people from different parts of New England talk. James Stanford joins us to discuss some of his team’s findings. Chaeyoon Kim, Sravana Reddy, Ezra Wyschogrod, and Jack Grieve are co-authors on the study. For a deep dive into the Vermont accent, we highly recommend the very first episode of Vermont Public Radio’s podcast Brave Little State. Lobster Pots and Chamber Pots This map, produced by NH Fish & Game in 1976, details the claims made by both sides in the lobster wars. Courtesy Portsmouth Athenaeum Off the coast of New Hampshire are the iconic Isles of Shoals. Somewhere around the middle of those isles, there’s a dotted line: the state border between New Hampshire and Maine. As New Hampshire Public Radio's Jason Moon learned, that line has been the cause of some intense disagreement over the years among lobstermen. It's back-to-school time in New England. And in their “what I did this summer” essays, some Connecticut kids might be writing about the week they spent in 1774. Each year, the Noah Webster House in West Hartford, the childhood home of the founder of the American dictionary, holds Colonial Children's Camp. The program gives kids a taste of what daily life was like in Webster's time. NEXT producer Andrea Muraskin paid a visit. About NEXT NEXT is produced at WNPR.
