Bibliografia: M. LIVERANI, Le lettere di el-Amarna, 2 voll., Brescia, Paideia, 1998-1999; R. COHEN E R. Most of us appreciate the importance of the immune system yet have very little knowledge about how it actually works. If you fall into this camp and are curious to learn more about this intricate system, Bobby Cherayil's book is an excellent resource. The Logic of Immunity: Deciphering an Enigma was published in January 2024 by John Hopkins University Press. It gives a great overview of this complex system, including several findings from the recent years. It also points out the many areas of ongoing research and open questions. The book introduces the actors of the system and the many interactions between them: the various types of immune cells, the pathogens and pathogen-associated patterns they recognize, the cascade of events that ultimately leads to an immune response. The opening chapter explains (and visualizes!) where these cells are located. It explains how they contribute to the immune response, and how we broadly categorize them into innate and adaptive immunity. Chapters 2 and 3 discuss the innate immune system. We get to know the general concepts, like molecular patterns and receptors recognizing them. They describe in detail some well-studied mechanisms, like the LPS-TLR4 interaction. And we also learn the story of their research spanning multiple years and multiple discoveries building upon each other. Chapters 4-6 delve into the mechanisms of adaptive immunity and their main cell types: B- and T-lymphocytes. Have you ever wondered how the immune system is able to "remember" earlier infections? You'll find here both an overview of "immune memory" and a detailed description how B and T cell proliferate and specialize. Chapter 7 shows how these immune reactions are sometimes provoked by harmless substances - that's what we call allergy. Or even by human cells - that's what we call autoimmune diseases. The next chapters put the immune system into a bigger context. They discuss the variability of immunity across different individuals and the many reasons behind it. Genes, environment, past infections, life style. A particularly fascinating part of "the human ecosystem" is the microbiota. Its importance has been recognized only in the last two decades. Chapter 8 introduces really well this emerging field of study. Chapter 11 is dedicated to an immunology topic that affects all of us: vaccines. Building upon the knowledge from previous chapters, it explains how vaccines work. Throughout the book, we learn a lot both about the exciting developments and the open questions in the field of immunology. Chapter 12 gives a summary of some trends of the last decades and an outlook for the next big puzzles to tackle. Learn more about your ad choices. Henry Robinson opened the Office of Addresses and Encounters on Threadneedle Street, London on 29th September, 1650. The centre provided a forward-looking, unusual mix of services ranging from job placements, money lending, and property dealings… to (shhh) match-making. Robinson's inspiration came from a broader philosophical concept of creating a place where people of all classes could access information, regardless of their status in society. He accordingly charged a minimal fee for answers to queries, and offered an array of services, from buying and selling land to language tuition and finding ‘travel companions'.  In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explore why euphemistic wording was so often used in these very first ‘classifieds'; reveal the first documented example of a ‘Lonely Hearts' advertisement; and consider what Robinson's upselling model had in common with Costco… Further Reading: • ‘Heretic, Rebel, a Thing to Flout: They Found Answers at the Office of Addresses and Encounters' (Patrick Murfin, 2016): https://patrickmurfin.blogspot.com/2016/09/they-found-answers-at-office-of.html • ‘The Secret History of Domesticity - Public, Private, and the Division of Knowledge - By Michael McKeon' (John Hopkins University Press, 2006): https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/The_Secret_History_of_Domesticity/8VrwIKiAefkC?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=henry+robinson+office+of+encounters&pg=PA28&printsec=frontcover • ‘HISTORY OF IDEAS - Dating' (The School of Life, 2018): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ob14PcHtazQ #1600s #UK #Romantic #Business Love the show? Clionsky, a physician and neuropsychologist couple have cared for their own parents with dementia, and talk about ways to improve your brain's future, many of which may seem surprising. From vitamins, to your activities, social infrastructure, even mental outlooks, and even how you breathe while you sleep and so much more can play a significant role in how dementia may impact our lives. In fact, in Dementia Prevention: Using Your Head to Save Your Brain, they share 20 factors that impact dementia risk, including 17 that are changeable in adulthood as well as proven psychological methods to change your habits and health to alter your brain's future. They educate us on the various types of dementia and clear up some confusion we may have on this topic. But in this episode, they also offer a cliff-notes and layman's understanding of what exactly is happening when dementia takes hold, allowing us to better understand how we can utilize our stakeholder opportunity to circumvent its potential onset. But this neuropsychologist team also focuses on areas often overlooked such as hearing, vision, and the many health factors such as blood pressure, exercise and sugar levels that are important to be aware of as it relates to dementia. They echo a welcoming sense of empowerment for everyone, even those who may have a genetic predisposition for dementia, to take control and change several risk factors in their favor.Together, they have treated more than 25,000 patients with cognitive impairment and are responsible for developing the Memory Orientation Screening Test (MOST), which has been used by hundreds of doctors. Most everyone knows or has known someone with dementia. And most people fear that they, too, will develop memory problems as they age. As much as many of us joke about it, dementia is a frightening idea. Whether we call it Alzheimer's disease, Vascular Dementia, Fronto-temporal Dementia, Lewy Body Disease or several others, the progressive loss of our ability to remember, to think, to make decisions and to communicate scares us more than almost any other aging condition. But what if half of all dementias could be avoided? Half of all dementia nursing home beds emptied? Half of all caretakers freed up to lead more normal lives with parents and spouses who still “have it?” What suffering could be avoided and what staggering healthcare costs could be saved? And what if this was not the result of taking some pill, eating some superfood, playing some mind game, or holding your fork in the left hand instead of your right? What if it was a matter of understanding the science that exists today and applying that knowledge to yourself? What if you could keep you thinking like you are 50 when you become 80? Two experts in brain preservation, Emily Clionsky MD and Mitchell Clionsky PhD will show you how to stack the dementia deck in your favor by reading and following the prescription in Dementia Prevention: Using Your Head to Save Your Brain, (John Hopkins University Press; April 4, 2023). Midlife medical conditions that affect dementia risk, including hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. New York journalism in 1897 was in a pretty technicolor space. Newspapers, so long the grey, stolid, medium of the merchants and businessman, were instead being filled with lurid stories of murder, scandal and drunken debauchery and the public were loving it. As papers fought for readers in the streets, sometimes quite literally, the stories that filled the pages and the methods utilised on order to write the stories grew more and more sensational by the day. It all came to something of a boiling point in the high temperatures of Summer, when a body washed up in the East River, carved up and lacking a head. The investigation that followed was carried out just as much by the journalists as it was the police, as the lines between who was who became increasingly blurred.   SOURCES   Collins, Paul (2011) Murder of the Century: The Gilded Age Crime That Scandalized a City and Sparked the Tabloid Wars. Born on May 26, 1700, Nikolaus Ludwig, Count of Zinzendorf and Pottendorf, was raised by his religious maternal grandmother, who hosted many Pietist leaders at her estate. Being surrounded by these individuals influenced the Count, who decided to give up a government position in Saxony, one he had studied for, to fulfill a life of divine work for the Lord. Zinzendorf would soon be approached by a man telling him of the oppression of a small religious group in Moravia. Offering them shelter, the Moravians emigrated to land in Upper Lusatia. This land was owned by Zinzendorf and would become known as Herrnhut. The Count helped proved vital in shaping the Moravian Church. He wrote church doctrine, became superintendent of the Church, and led the Moravian Church in establishing and expanding the Moravian Church throughout the Western world.   Bibliography & Further Reading: Fries, Adelaide, Records of the Moravians in North Carolina. [Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised. For most school sucks. Especially when you have to work on something that will follow you like a nightmare for the rest of your life because it has little intrinsic value. Writing is essential in every day life. We do it all the time, and we read all the time which takes an understanding of writing to an extent because that piece was either written by someone or your comprehension of that piece may vary depending on your own level of craftsmanship. But there is one such device in literature and English that destroys that: the five paragraph essay. The nightmare of school and the bane of English, does the five paragraph essay have real value? Or, as the author of today's piece argues, is it holding back English students in the United States. While this book can be read as an analyst of the US educational system as an extension, one of the most destructive devices is the five paragraph essay, and Danny and the Tsar discuss why it not a good use of kids time by talking about their experiences and how they view education as well as using examples from the book in regards to the not well enough respected, true essay format. The witch trials throughout medieval europe have become renowned for their relentless, brutal torture and widespread execution. Whether floated as a form of class warfare, patriarchal dominance or religious persecution, the stories that remain are pitch black with their depictions of callous violence. Likewise, the legacy of The Medieval Inquisition, is too one of severe brutality and overzealous, corrupt authoritarians crushing those with differing beliefs and lifestyles. Despite this, there is one story from history of a group of individuals in Northern Italy that whilst crossing over with both The Inquisition and witch trials, somehow came out the other side with relatively few casualties. So unbelievable were the stories that came from the individuals involved, that The Inquisitors themselves wrote many off as simple fantasists in the face of their sincere admissions. Known as the Benandanti, this was a group of people whose story was truly one of the strangest in the myths, legends and lore of historical Witchcraft. SOURCES Ginzburg, Carlo. In The Past Lane - The Podcast About History and Why It Matters

This week In The Past Lane looks into the little known and yet hugely significant development of the ice and refrigeration industries in US history. 1) first we tell the story of Frederick Tudor, the "Ice King," who single-handedly invented the ice industry way back in 1806. This development radically redefined the American life, especially the American diet. 2) Then we check in with historian Jonathan Rees, the nation's leading authority on all things related refrigeration, to learn how mechanical refrigeration and machine-made ice accelerated this transformation of everyday life. 3) Finally, we take just a few minutes to visit a unique bar in New York City. It's called Minus 5 and with the exception of the floor and ceiling, it's made entirely of ice and kept at a temperature of Minus 5 centigrade (minus 19 F). Yeah, I know ...
