Dr. Marie Mihalicz is a respected researcher, consultant, and founder of White Lightning Consulting, an organization committed to community-based healing and wellness retreats. She completed her Ph.D. at Royal Roads University, where her dissertation focused on Indigenous methods of healing and their potential for addressing the high rates of suicide and mental health issues in northern Saskatchewan communities. Her research findings have been used to influence policy change, with the aim of supporting sustainable, culturally relevant mental health services for Indigenous youth and families. Dr. Mihalicz and her team at White Lightning Consulting offer evidence-based healing and education programs that combine Western science and Indigenous healing methods. Through their collaborative community-based approach, they aim to empower Indigenous youth and families to pick up their knowledge bundles in today's world, strengthening and mobilizing community processes from the inside-out. In the face of the challenges posed by the pandemic and the complex intergenerational trauma experienced by Indigenous communities, Dr. Mihalicz and her team continue to work towards enhancing sustainable counseling supports and delivering effective leadership training workshops. In this 8th podcast of a nine part series, Marie Mihalicz discusses the importance of decolonizing trauma and healing the soul. She highlights how traditional ways of knowing are not recognized, and there are gaps in the mental health system that need to be addressed. Mihalicz emphasizes that trauma is passed down through blood, but so is healing, and it is essential to understand the historical links to trauma. She suggests that healing is in our DNA and that the delivery of mental health needs to change to include outdoor therapy, such as art therapy, breathwork, and hands-on ceremonies. Mihalicz believes that the biggest barriers to healing are the spiritual loss and the fact that traditional healing methods are not recognized by the current system. She emphasizes the need for protocols and boundaries around ceremonies, as well as space to sit down and talk about how we are doing. Mihalicz advocates for the use of traditional Indigenous practices in mental health treatment, such as prescribing ceremonies and mentorship through ceremony. She encourages people to learn about their history, stories, and intergenerational trauma, to talk about it and create safe spaces to heal. Finally, Mihalicz emphasizes that healing starts with the self, and one needs to heal oneself first before helping others. Full Text of ReadingsTuesday of the Third Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 318The Saint of the day is Saint Marianne CopeSaint Marianne Cope's Story Though leprosy scared off most people in 19th-century Hawaii, that disease sparked great generosity in the woman who came to be known as Mother Marianne of Molokai. Her courage helped tremendously to improve the lives of its victims in Hawaii, a territory annexed to the United States during her lifetime (1898). Mother Marianne's generosity and courage were celebrated at her May 14, 2005, beatification in Rome. She was a woman who spoke “the language of truth and love” to the world, said Cardinal José Saraiva Martins, prefect of the Congregation for Saints' Causes. Cardinal Martins, who presided at the beatification Mass in St. Peter's Basilica, called her life “a wonderful work of divine grace.” Speaking of her special love for persons suffering from leprosy, he said, “She saw in them the suffering face of Jesus. Like the Good Samaritan, she became their mother.” On January 23, 1838, a daughter was born to Peter and Barbara Cope of Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. The girl was named after her mother. Two years later the Cope family emigrated to the United States and settled in Utica, New York. Young Barbara worked in a factory until August 1862, when she went to the Sisters of the Third Order of Saint Francis in Syracuse, New York. After profession in November of the next year, she began teaching at Assumption parish school. Marianne held the post of superior in several places and was twice the novice mistress of her congregation. A natural leader, three different times she was superior of St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse, where she learned much that would be useful during her years in Hawaii. Elected provincial in 1877, Mother Marianne was unanimously re-elected in 1881. Two years later the Hawaiian government was searching for someone to run the Kakaako Receiving Station for people suspected of having leprosy. More than 50 religious communities in the United States and Canada were asked. When the request was put to the Syracuse sisters, 35 of them volunteered immediately. On October 22, 1883, Mother Marianne and six other sisters left for Hawaii where they took charge of the Kakaako Receiving Station outside Honolulu; on the island of Maui they also opened a hospital and a school for girls. In 1888, Mother Marianne and two sisters went to Molokai to open a home for “unprotected women and girls” there. The Hawaiian government was quite hesitant to send women for this difficult assignment; they need not have worried about Mother Marianne! On Molokai she took charge of the home that Saint Damien de Veuster had established for men and boys. Mother Marianne changed life on Molokai by introducing cleanliness, pride, and fun to the colony. Bright scarves and pretty dresses for the women were part of her approach. Awarded the Royal Order of Kapiolani by the Hawaiian government and celebrated in a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson, Mother Marianne continued her work faithfully. Her sisters have attracted vocations among the Hawaiian people and still work on Molokai. Mother Marianne died on August 9, 1918, was beatified in 2005, and canonized seven years later. Reflection The government authorities were reluctant to allow Mother Marianne to be a mother on Molokai. Thirty years of dedication proved their fears unfounded. God grants gifts regardless of human shortsightedness and allows those gifts to flower for the sake of the kingdom. Click here for more on Saint Marianne Cope! Given that 30% of annual giving happens in December, it's crucial for nonprofits to have a winning year-end fundraising strategy. In today's podcast episode, the IPM Advancement team shares their best tips for CYE fundraising, including the importance of major donors, why direct mail still matters, how to navigate 2023 trends and challenges, re-engaging lapsed donors, the role of self-care in fundraising, how to strategize for 2024, and more. Today's podcast: Signing on again after 2+ months. Two hospital stays, 4 days in ICU and surgery. On March 31, Jeff Storey saved my life by making a 911 call for a police wellness check on me. Police officers had me rushed to hospital where E.R. doctors initially weren't sure I would survive. I have zero recollection of any of this or the three days leading to Jeff making the 911 call. Jeff Storey did what he does so well and that is make a decision and take action. Jeff stepped forward in a situation he assessed as an emergent. Too often people hesitate or don't act at all. Full Text of ReadingsDay of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children Lectionary: 317The Saint of the day is Saint Marianne CopeSaint Marianne Cope's Story Though leprosy scared off most people in 19th-century Hawaii, that disease sparked great generosity in the woman who came to be known as Mother Marianne of Molokai. A daily news briefing from Catholic News Agency, powered by artificial intelligence. Ask your smart speaker to play “Catholic News,” or listen every morning wherever you get podcasts. www.catholicnewsagency.com - The US Catholic bishops appealed on Monday for “an honest dialogue rooted in Christ” about the “persistent evil of racism” after two mass shootings. The bishops spoke out after a gunman killed 10 people and injured three others on May 14 at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, and a shooter killed one person and wounded five others on May 15 at a church in Laguna Woods, California. Authorities called the mass shooting in Buffalo a racially motivated hate crime and said that the gunman specifically targeted the store because it is located in a predominantly Black neighborhood. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/251260/us-catholic-bishops-call-for-honest-dialogue-on-persistent-evil-of-racism-after-mass-shootings The two branches of the Catholic charity, Caritas, in Ukraine say they have helped almost 1.5 million people since Russia's full-scale invasion. Caritas Ukraine, which offers humanitarian assistance through the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, oversees an office in the Russian-occupied city of Mariupol where seven people were killed under Russian tank fire. The country's other Caritas organization is Caritas-Spes, the charitable mission of Ukraine's Latin Rite bishops.Caritas groups are also active in neighboring countries, where more than six million Ukrainians have fled since February 24. In Poland, which has welcomed over three million Ukrainian refugees, Caritas' diocesan network has delivered over 1.5 million meals to more than 500,000 people. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/251253/this-is-going-to-be-a-long-haul-caritas-groups-help-almost-15-million-ukrainians-amid-war Christian leaders of the Holy Land on Monday condemned recent violence at the funeral of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, saying the “tragic episode” has “deeply wounded” the Christian community. Abu Akleh was a Melkite Greek Catholic and a Palestinian American who was killed while covering an Israeli raid on a refugee camp in the West Bank May 11. The BBC reported that during her funeral procession on May 13, Abu Akleh's coffin “almost fell” as police waded into the crowd brandishing batons and using stun grenades. The Christian leaders called the police' actions at the funeral, which took place in the parking compound of St. Joseph's Hospital in Jerusalem, a “violent intrusion.” On May 12, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem called “for a thorough and urgent investigation of all the circumstances of Abu Akleh's killing and for bringing those responsible to justice.” catholicnewsagency.com/news/251256/christian-leaders-condemn-violence-at-funeral-of-palestinian-journalist-shireen-abu-akleh Today, the Church celebrates Saint Pascal Baylon, a 16th-century lay brother amongst the Franciscan friars of the Alcantarine Reform. So some of the Hollywood looks, everyone kind of looks like clones because they're getting injected the same way again and again. And it's not honoring their beauty as a unique individual.” PRODUCTS / RESOURCES: Follow Clear Dermatology on Instagram @cleardermatology - https://www.instagram.com/cleardermatology/ Follow Clear Dermatology on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ClearDermatology Check out these exclusive promos for Radiance Revealed listeners: Purchase a dermaplane treatment with one of our licensed aestheticians and receive a complimentary lunchtime peel.
