S2E2 Psychedelic Kaiju w/ War of the Gargantuas (1966) & Matango (1963) Kevin Moss from the Junk Food Dinner podcast joins Cory and Bob for the most wigged-out Japanese monster movies ever to come out of Toho Studios. First, it's the good Brown Gargantua vs. the evil Green Gargantua in a battle of land and sea elemental forces in the appropriately titled WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS (1966), an epic that rattled the minds of everyone from Guillermo del Toro to Tim Burton to friggin' Brad Pitt (who gushed about it once during The Oscars). It's also a favorite of Mark Mothersbaugh of DEVO, who used to close out their set with "The Words Get Stuck in My Throat," the baffling-yet-catchy pop song that's ruined by Green Gargantua in the middle of the movie. Watch for it. The Gargantuas are about half the size of Godzilla or Rodan, and they don't have tails, so they move fast and hurl tanks like they're baseballs. Starring a decidedly unimpressed Russ Tamblyn from the original WEST SIDE STORY and the lovely Kumi Mizuno. Things get even weirder with our second feature, MATANGO (1963) aka ATTACK OF THE MUSHROOM PEOPLE. Seven stranded castaways (or maybe a few more) are shipwrecked on an island where the only thing to eat are mutated mushrooms with the power to transform you into creepy toadstool creatures. It's kaiju meets full-on body horror. Kumi Mizuno is back for this one along with Yoshio Tsuchiya and Akira Kubo. Both of our films also feature the artistry of Gojira director Ishiro Honda and special effects wizard Eiji Tsuburaya, which makes Honda the most featured director on OLD MOVIES FOR YOUNG STONERS of all time, since we profiled his ALL MONSTERS ATTACK (1969) in Season One, Episode Six. We haven't even done Orson Welles or Fritz Lang movies yet, but we've featured three Ishiro Honda movies. Priorities! Big thanks to Kevin Moss for joining us. His indispensable JUNK FOOD DINNER podcast is streaming on Apple Podcasts and your favorite podcast app. You can learn more about it at junkfooddinner.com. All of Bob's Ishiro Honda knowledge in this ep comes from the excellent book, "Ishiro Honda: A Life in Film from Godzilla to Kurosawa" by Steve Ryfle and Ed Godziszewski. Bob purchased the book from MZS.press, the bookstore run by movie and TV critic Matt Zoller Seitz out of his home. Highly recommended. But it might be a spiritual sequel, and it's definitely got Dom Deluise (the actor, not the Patreon tier). Listen along as we explore Dom's only (notable) directorial effort, in which he, Jerry Reed and Suzanne Pleshette serve and protect the community by flipping old wares in and old wares-house. With fat jokes! (thanks Ricky O!) Next up! We've done Sam Raimi's 1985 film Crime Wave, so of course we're reviewing John Paizs's 1985 film Crime Wave aka The Big Crimewave (from 1985). With surrealist photography! (thanks Eddie!) Finally! Of course, it's 1987's Tough Guys Don't Dance, that soapishly operatic cuckolding drama from true-life shit-head Norman Mailer. Ryan O'Neal stars in this Provincetown classic that contains everyone's favorite dramatic line readings. With baby Penn Jillette! (thanks Matt from Arizona!) Hey there! What do Australian stuntmen, New York cinephiles, and Old West Vampire Slugs have in common? If you answered "they're who hosts this podcast every week", well - that's not only incorrect, it's rude. But we WILL be talking about them this week in our reviews! Together with Zach! From the Shuffle.Repeat Podcast! Up first! It's 1978's Stunt Rock, the first and only movie whose entire scope of ambition was limited to combining a type of music with a type of previously-filmed footage! But given that the mostly pre-recorded footage stars Australian stuntmaster Grant Page, and the music is from none-other-than Rocktober Blood's very own backing band (Sorcery! the band with the magic tricks!), and the director is Brian "Leprechaun in Space" Trenchard-Smith, whether or not the normal rules of film criticism even apply is perhaps up for debate. Rock along with us as we discuss our favorite death-defying manuevers and whether or not this Sorcery band is any better than KISS. Next up! There's only ONE documentary we know of that chronicles in extensive detail the filmgoing habits of the people who annoy Mark Freado the most. And based on that alone, we knew we had to see it, no matter what kind of subway gymnastics might be required. We're gabbing of course about Cinemania, from 2002. It follows a group of obsessed movie goers as they obsessively go to the movies. But what do they think of Attack of the Crab Monsters? Finally! Of course, it's 2008's The Burrowers - a weird western with even weirder creatures. And we're not even talking Mapothers here. But it does have Mapothers (buyer beware). If you like toothy molemen, though, you'll be hyped. All this plus just walkin' the dog (wink wink), a drive-in theatrical attendance report (feat. kevin), the limitations of the boob scale, problematic pokemons, donut shop tourism, Bowman is gonzo for Belmondo, an earnest appreciation for stuntsmen, cine-musical fantasias, identifying with outcasts, a very special raver, theoretical vampire freadoing, the time we screwed over Shelby revisited, nerd news and even more! A few weeks back, we did segment called Movie Hostage (shout out to Kissing Contest) where we presented 3 flicks to the other JFD boys and let them pick the ones we would watch. As a result we ended up with Japanese aliens, cops who are also little kids and rotoscoped drug addicts. Up first, Hajime Satô directs a tale about a group of passengers on a plane that is set off course and crash lands in a remote area where aliens have landed and may also be body snatchers and vampires in the 1968 sci-fi classic Goke, Body Snatcher from Hell. Next, two teenage brothers write and direct a hard-boiled cop drama, but there's a twist; the cast is made up entirely of 6 to 8-year-olds! Hawk Jones made a minor splash when it was released on VHS in 1986 but has since gained a sizable cult following thanks to the internet. Finally, Richard Linklater casts Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson and Winona Ryder to fill out the drug-addled and rotoscoped paranoid world of Phillip K. Dick's A Scanner Darkly from 2006. All this plus we discuss the origin of Husker Du (and Husker Don'ts), Sean's favorite brand of hot dogs, we meet a new Swedish friend, we check in with our friends who are melting in the Pacific Northwest, updates on "the Flintstone House", Dune delays, gay British bikers and so much more.LISTEN NOW:MP3 Direct DonloydAlso, if you like the show, please take a minute and subscribe and/or comment on us on iTunes, Stitcher, Blubrry or Podfeed.net. Hey there! Remember that time we all learned about the birds and the bees from Howie Mandel, Jim Henson, and a pigeon with a really large rodney? Neither do we, but it sounds like a short, sweet dream. Find out what sorta sexual maneuvers we'd have pulled together in this hypothetical scenario when you donloyd and listen now! It's short films week! Up first! It's 1975's Muppet Show: Sex and Violence! The second of two television pilots produced by Jim Henson for ABC leading up to the production of his weekly showcase of technical muppetry, this 30-minute special is one of the few Muppet Shows not currently steamable on Disney+! Listen along as we try to convince Kevin the value of physical media by showing him these DVD-based pixels of Sam the Eagle and Floyd the Musician. Next up! There's very little in the way of visually appealing animation and absolutely no technically competent muppetry in 1985's Where Did I Come From?, but that can't stop us from reviewing it. It's a Burbank Animation Studios production, after-all, and Parker Bowman's got priorities when it comes to enjoying every instance of Howie Mandel narrating cartoons about the development of human fuckstyles. Come for the pubes, stay for the public education! Finally! Of course, it's 2011's Bobby Yeah. We weren't too familiar before this week with the bizarre work of stop-motion animator Robert Morgan, but will that change going forward? Is he now one of our dudes? Watch along with this twisted tale of a bunny-like boy being tormented by demonic creatures (we think?) and find out alongside us! All this plus spice racks a plenty, the 1970s Disney Live Action revue, Kevin sparks one up at the cinema, remembering the Dodgers & the Mets, the JFD postcard invitational, Bollywood Bonanza, Kevin's hooked on streamers, technical fucketry, muppet plans for nigel, Kevin's very special Sex Ed story (featuring a real-life sexpert), pizza face guy on the wall with extremely realistic eyeballs, a playful sense of podcasting chronology, the sound of one drum exploding, nerd news and even more! Hey there! Remember that time we all ran away to the big city to play golf and exorcize teenagers? Neither do we, but it sounds like a sweet dream. Find out what sorta BMX tricks we'd have pulled together in this hypothetical scenario when you donloyd and listen now! Up first! It's 1980's Times Square! The third film in Kevin Moss's continuing series exploring the runaway teenagers of the 1980s, this one's got marquees-a-plenty and a supporting turn by Tim Curry portraying none other than Johnny LaGuardia, famed fictional NYC radio DJ. The soundtrack's chock full of bangers from top to bottom, but does the movie thrill us? !Next up! There's very little exorcism and absolutely no teenagers in 1991's Teenage Exorcist, but that can't stop us from reviewing it. It's a Fred Olen Ray production, after-all, and Parker Bowman's got priorities when it comes to enjoying every instance of a leather bikini-clad Brinke Stevens whipping Eddie Deezen in a demonic basement scenario. Finally! Of course, it's 2004's 3-Iron (aka Bin Jip). It's the Korean romance film that you just KNEW we'd review some day - and the day is here. Is it a Sean pick, though, or does it not feature any baffling stretches of surreal silence? Is it even about golf? All this plus the trouble with cicadas, a cricket's jihad, Kevin wants his classic Jughead doll, a weirder looking dude than Paul Giamatti, being unfair to Jim Van Bebber, casting out demons on Skype, Siskel v Ebert: a heavyweight title match, extended musical interludes, nerd news and even more! This week the boys put on their grandpa clothes to kick off June with a June-iversal Monsters show chock full of black and white horror goodness! Up first, James Whale (director of Frankenstein, Invisible Man and Bride of Frankenstein) takes us into The Old Dark House from 1932. A group of travelers seek refuge from a storm in a creepy mansion inhabited by some strange folks and their monstrous man servant played by Boris Karloff. Then, in a sequel to the original Wolf Man, Lon Chaney Jr. returns as Lawrence Talbot, back from the grave and up to his wolfish ways. He seeks out the old gypsy woman to help lift his curse, and while she can't help him she knows a doctor who can... Dr. Frankenstein! But when they get to Germany, they find out the good doctor has passed away, but they do discover his monster (this time played by Bela Lugosi) frozen, but still alive in Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man from 1943. And finally, we get another monster mash but this time with a healthy dose of comedy as Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, working as shipping clerks run afoul of Dracula (Bela Lugosi) and Frankenstein (Glenn Strange) all while trying to assist Lon Chaney Jr, who once again is wolfin' out in Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein from 1948. All this plus we do a little Movie Hostage, run down some movies we've been watching, get some insight into AMC and the "stonk market", find out why Regal Cinema switched to Pepsi, see what video game tripped Kevin out and so much more. Once again, we've turned over our movie picks to our Dom DeLuise Patreon donors (the coolest kids in the whole school) and end up with a trio of flicks you may have rented in the 7th grade. Up first, Jim Henson, George Lucas and David Bowie's package team up for the ultimate in technical Muppetry, 1986's Labyrinth, about a young girl (Jennifer Connelly) who has to figure out a fantastical maze in order to save her baby brother.Next, an 80's summer camp move that's not a sex comedy or a slasher? Despite its title, Summer Camp Nightmare isn't a horror movie, instead it's about what happens when the kids at a summer camp stage a violent coup and take over the camp. Lord of the Flies... that's what happens. And finally, in 1995 if you were into MMA, you may have caught this ultra-cheesy action flick called Superfights, about an elite fighting company and a naive young talent who enters it and quickly finds out, all is not as it seems. Well, howdy! Y'all like movies that were produced to air on television? In that case, we got a hell of a theme-show for y'alls this week. It's our May-d For TV extravaganza! Listen along as we chat about three very different TV movies. Up first! It's 1972's The Night Strangler! The original TV Movie that spawned a sequel, a TV series, and a thousand imitators (or, the X-Files at least), this flick tracks the adventures of grizzled newspapersman Kolchak as he tracks down a murderous vampire in glitzy old Las Vegas. Plus: bonus swimming pool violence!Next up! The two Barbaras of 70s TV (Eden and Feldon) decide to swap lives, to experience what it's like to be a homemaker or a career woman, in the lightly comedic gender politics dissection Let's Switch, from 1975! Will Parker explain to us why he selected this obscure slice of 70s TV? Tune in and you'll find out (if he tells us). Finally! Of course, it's 1986's's The Children of Times Square. It's that one where a kid (named Eric Roberts!) falls in with some bad drug gang kinda stuff in dirty old NYC after running away from his idyllic suburban home. We'll tell ya all about those marquees in Times Square. All this plus is it time for the percolator?, musings on the current state of Made for TV movies, Cleopatra Chats, Kevin's analog crates, a musical tribute to a fallen filmmaker, how was babby formed?, a funny story about the Mirthmobile, Chekhov's Bigfoot, a tender moment or two, news-y loose-y, problems with pixels, nerd news plus blu-ray picks and even more!
