Welcome to Dr. M's Women and Children First Podcast, where we explore groundbreaking approaches to health and wellness for women and children. Today, we're honored to introduce Dr. Kevin Boyd, DDS, MSc, a board-certified pediatric dentist and a trailblazer in the field of evolutionary oral medicine. With an illustrious career spanning over three decades, Dr. Boyd practices in Chicago and serves as an attending instructor at Lurie Children's Hospital's Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program, where he also consults for the Sleep Medicine service. Dr. Boyd's unique perspective is rooted in his undergraduate work in Biological Anthropology at Northeastern University as well as a Masters of science in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from Michigan State University. As a Visiting Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania's Museum of Anthropology, he conducts pioneering research into how dietary and lifestyle changes since the Industrial Revolution have impacted craniofacial and respiratory development. His work in Darwinian Dentistry draws on anthropological insights, examining prehistoric fossil records to understand modern systemic diseases, particularly those affecting airway health in children. A passionate advocate for early intervention, Dr. Boyd focuses on preventing and treating craniofacial-respiratory issues in young children, often under age 7, to promote healthy breathing, sleep, and neurocognitive development. Through his global lectures on early childhood malocclusion, pediatric sleep-breathing hygiene, and evolutionary oral medicine, Dr. Boyd is educating clinicians and parents alike. Join us as Dr. Boyd shares his anthropological insights, clinical expertise, and vision for revolutionizing airway health to help women and children thrive. Let's dive in! Dr. M

Dr. Julia is a biological dentist, accredited by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. She attended dental school in Indiana, where she first began her dental career. She went on to practice dentistry for several years at a holistic dental practice in Chicago. She was able to work closely in collaboration with Dr. Kevin Boyd, even serving as a research assistant for his anthropology research with the Penn Museum. Dr. Julia was practicing general dentistry, while still offering important services like infant frenectomies. Her passion for identifying and referring young patients to seek early interceptive solutions became one of her favorite parts of her profession. She has since created her own consulting business, Oris Wellness, to offer customized one-on-one support for parents in the topics surrounding airway dentistry. Her new Smile Support program will be launching soon, which will enable more structured ongoing assistance for the families she helps. More recently, Dr. Julia relocated with her husband and dog to Portugal. She is enjoying learning about how the perspectives and services that are offered in Europe vary from the training she received formerly in the US. Furthermore, she is enjoying the chance to be on this adventure and building out her next chapter with more intention. Host and Lead Pastor, Kevin Boyd, is joined by guest and Lead Pastor of Icon Church, Dave Lee. Together, they get to know the who, how, and why behind the Icon Church plant happening here in Plano, Texas. Icon's mission is to "Reflect Jesus, Embrace Harmony, and Create Community". Next time you see Dave, his family, or anyone from his team, give them a high-five and tell them they're doing a great job! Growing up as an Asian-American, Dave always felt like a cultural misfit. He was also a pastor's kid who struggled with bitterness toward the Church. Over time, God used several people in Dave's life to help him see the truth of the gospel and that he was not a misfit but a bridgemaker. Dave has served in pastoral roles in several churches across the country. In 2021, he received his Master's of Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary and began to plant Icon Church with his wife, Lynn. This is a conversation show about the things we're thinking about, the things we care about, and the things that are important to the life and culture for the people of Legacy Church (https://www.legacychurch.org/) in Plano, Texas. We pray this season will offer you times of encouragement, laughter, and most importantly a deeper desire to know and love our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Visit www.drstevenlin.com for this episode and moreIf your child struggles with sleep breathing then it's important to understand why.If there is one topic we should all be talking about more regularly, is how are our kids breathing.A quick assessment may ask how they are they breathing during the day? How does this compare to when they are sleeping? Do they sleep with their Mouth open? Does your child snore? These questions need to be on every parent's lips, but the issue is that once we see the problem, we find a very complex human health issue nearly all kids are experiencing today.Pediatric dental development is linked to the airway, and crooked teeth are shrinking our kid's breathing capacities, resulting in snoring and dangerous absences of oxygen during critical brain development phases. This week I have the absolute pleasure of interviewing Dr. Kevin Boyd DDS, a specialist pediatric dentist who has been sounding the drum on the huge issues facing our developing human dental arches. We will dive into the anthropology, physiology, and practical solutions to help parents GROW a child's face.Sleep breathing disorders in toddlers and kids shouldn't be ignored and Dr. Boyd helps us understand what to do next.To learn more please visit: https://dfchildren.com/?%2F

In this episode, we delve into the intriguing evolution of chewing, also known as mastication, and how it has shaped the human species. We'll uncover the differences between our chewing habits and those of our ancestors, highlighting the insights they offer into human evolution. Our guest expert, Dr. Kevin Boyd, a renowned clinician specializing in pediatric dentistry, human nutrition, and orthodontics, will provide valuable insights into the changes in our masticatory system, diet, and their impact on our craniofacial respiratory complex. If you suspect you have an open bite or are experiencing any related issues, it's best to consult with an orthodontist or a dentist who specializes in bite problems .Remember, if you have concerns about your oral health, it's best to consult with a dentist or dental professional who can provide personalized advice and treatment options tailored to your specific needs.  Key Takeaways:-Chewing, or mastication, has evolved over time and played a crucial role in human survival and adaptation.-Our ancestors spent significantly more time chewing their food compared to modern humans due to the need to optimize feeding and acquire energy-rich nutrients.-The invention of tools, food processing, cooking, and agriculture has reduced the time and energy expenditure required for chewing in modern humans.-Changes in our diet, including softer and more processed foods, have led to changes in our craniofacial respiratory complex, resulting in crooked or crowded teeth and smaller airways.-The metabolic costs of chewing may have influenced our evolution, and the transition to processed and cooked foods may have reduced the evolutionary pressure for strong chewing abilities.-Dr. Kevin Boyd emphasizes the importance of monitoring the development of children's jaws and mouths and highlights the early stages as an ideal time to seek orthodontic intervention if necessary.-Understanding the environmental, societal, and dietary factors that have influenced our chewing habits can provide valuable insights into our overall oral health and development.-The number of times you should chew before swallowing can vary depending on the type of food, its texture, and your personal preference. Book a consultation today:  I am always here to help answer any question and schedule a 15 minute call with me. Healthy Baby Strategies with Dr. Kevin Boyd - Here it is! This is part 2 of our conversation with Dr. Kevin Boyd in honor of SIDS Awareness month. In part 1, we talked about SIDS and how royal chins, anthropology and the work of pioneers like Dr. Christian Guilleminault and Dr. David Gozal have furthered our understanding of what we used to call crib death or cot death. You can check out part 1 in episode 38. Today in part 2, we take a deeper dive. We get into what our evolved understanding tells us about what we can do proactively to keep our babies safe. And let me say this right now: Dr. Kev, as his young patients call him, is a pediatric, airway-aware dentist, so get ready for some cutting edge strategies to keep our babies healthy. And my goal is to get these cutting edge practices into the hands of all young couples and parents. So please help me with that goal. How can you do that? How SIDS Inspired a Young Doctor with Dr. David Gozal “Things can happen in sleep. In this case, bad things.” These are the words of Dr. David Gozal as he tells the heart-breaking story of how he was introduced to sleep medicine. We featured this sleep medicine pioneer in episode 35 where he talked about kids and school problems in honor of ADHD Awareness. In this bonus episode, you'll hear Dr. Gozal tell how, as a pediatrician in Israel, he was faced with a difficult task at 3am in the ER, and how this experience drove him to want to know more about what happens during sleep, and why ultimately, his quest led him to the United States. After you listen to Dr. Gozal's story about SIDS, listen to episode 38 with Dr. Kevin Boyd, a pediatric dentist who brings an anthropological view point to the question of what contributes to SIDS. SIDS, Royal Chins and Anthropology with Dr. Kevin Boyd In this episode, we go beyond the workplace and look into something that impacts us on a profound level: the death of an infant. October is PREGNANCY & INFANT LOSS AWARENESS month and we're focusing on SIDS, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome—or what we used to call Crib Death. Each year, there are about 3,400 sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUID) in the United States. In 2019, about 1,250 deaths of those 3,400 deaths were due to SIDS itself. But here's the thing: what does that really tell us? After all, a syndrome according to Merriam Webster is “a group of signs and symptoms that occur together and characterize a particular abnormality or condition”. So SIDS helps us know what happened: tragically, an infant died suddenly and unexpectedly. But the term SIDS doesn't tell us WHY. And there's a reason for that: It's because we don't know why. That's what makes me so grateful for the ongoing work of pioneering researchers in the fields of sleep medicine and airway health. With each new discovery, we take another step forward toward understanding the WHY of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome—and each step forward brings us closer to the the ultimate goal of preventing it. Today on The Counterfeit Sleep® Podcast, we have the privilege of hearing from one of these pioneers in the field, Dr. Kevin Boyd. Let's listen in. Listen and get answers to these questions: How anthropology and royal chins give us a new window into overall health Why the novel “Airway Health” perspective is the backbone of health, from infancy through adulthood What we can we do—even before our babies are born— to give our them the best chance of a healthy life Get a copy of my parent guide "Is It Bad If My Baby Keeps His Mouth Open? Dr. Boyd also holds an advanced degree (M.Sc.) in Human Nutrition and Dietetics from Michigan State University where he participated in research projects related to unhealthy eating and how it contributes to tooth decay, obesity and Type 2 Diabetes. His strong academic background in nutritional biochemistry has been instrumental in motivating the importance he places on nutrition as being a key component of each child's dental health plan. Tonsils, Tongues & Sleep Problems with Chris Zombek, BSDH, COM We're bringing you this episode during ADHD Awareness month. If you listened to episode 35, you heard the very compelling conversation I had with Dr. David Gozal about kids with behavioral and learning problems—two things which often go hand-in-hand with ADHD. Dr. Gozal shared an amazing story about how he came to uncover the underlying problems in a group of kids with behavioral and learning problems—the bottom 25% of the class as Dr. Gozal puts it. And , more importantly, you got new insights into how to find solutions to these kinds of mental and emotional energy challenges that are so common in today's children. If you haven't listened to episode 35 with Dr. Gozal, check it out. And while you're at it, subscribe to The Counterfeit Sleep® Podcast because we have an amazing podcast coming up soon with Dr. Kevin Boyd who shares some incredible insights on the topic of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Today, we get into new territory… We're looking at WHY so many of these kids have sleep challenges in the first place. Now you may be thinking "SCREENS—our cellphones are wreaking havoc on sleep." There is truth to that and it's good you know because we have to be aware of these kind of “sleep hygiene” things that can wreak havoc on our sleep. But here on The Counterfeit Sleep® Podcast, you get more than sleep hygiene. We bring you the eye-opening solutions… the “Wait, what??” kind of insights that let you look at a problem in a new way--a way that brings you to solving the underlying problem. And that' exactly what we get into with today's guest, Chris Zombek. Chris's long career as a dental hygienist gave her access to the stunningly successful field of orofacial myofunctional therapy. Yep, it's a mouthful to say! And that's a happy coincidence because the mouth is actually the focus of orofacial myofunctional therapy. If we can geek out on the Latin roots for a moment: myo means “muscle” oro refers to oral, and facial refers to face! So if we work backwards, orofacial myofunctional therapy is therapy that focuses on the function of the muscles in the face and the mouth. And can you take a guess which muscle is most important? If you're like most people, you are in for a surprise… Listen and get answers to these important questions: What does thumb sucking and collar biting tell you about sleep problems? What's really going on when your school-aged child wets the bed? Why does the removal of the tonsils and the adenoids have such a high failure rate? And if you're a parent or a teacher looking to help these struggling kids in your life, get the guide I wrote for parents here. Chris Zombek BSDH, COM https://www.innovativemyo.com/ chriszombek@innovativemyo.com BIO Chris began her dental career 31 years ago and is a proud member of ADHA. Kevin Boyd, DDS, MS, discusses his innovative medical theory known as Darwinian Dentistry. Dr. Boyd's theory and hypothesis is based on the study of prehistoric fossil remains of human ancestors and could offer much information about the past, and future, of children's health care. Dr. Boyd is a board-certified pediatric dentist with over two decades of experience. Dr. Boyd explains the history of evolutionary medicine, commenting on some of the early pioneers of medicine who looked at modern diseases that seemed to be a function of cultural industrialization. Dr. Boyd discusses pathogens and causes, and focuses on how people adapt over geological time to gradually changing environments, and he discusses how it all impacts the genome. He cites examples of mammals that experience illnesses and survive to live another day, within the context of evolutionary fitness. Continuing, Dr. Boyd discusses tooth decay and why we now need orthodontists, considering the history and the time chronology, meaning when that first entered the human condition. He explains how he adapted the model of evolutionary medicine specifically to evolutionary oral medicine, or Darwinian Dentistry, aligning his theories with his 20 years of expertise as a dentist. Dr. Boyd discusses his work in pediatric dentistry, talking about orthodontics, and the management of anxiety in kids. Early oral evaluation, beginning at or around the ages of 3 or 4 is recommended, he states. Around this age, thumb sucking, pacifiers, or other oral habits can greatly influence the shape of a child's jaw, teeth, and even face. The doctor explains the merits of early orthodontics, widening the jaw and airway, etc., and how there is clear evidence of kids doing better in school, ending their bed wetting, and experiencing many behavioral improvements, after orthodontic procedures. He provides further information on the many problems that can be created and caused by crowding of the airway, and how early orthodontic procedures can facilitate and improve potential problems.

For today’s podcast, I’ve rounded up several of the NBT coaches to look more deeply at the single factor that is capable of improving athletic performance, mood, testosterone levels, blood glucose, fatigue, productivity, stress tolerance and gut health. We’re talking about sleep - the under-rated and often slighted backbone of a healthy lifestyle. In today’s busy world it’s easy to put sleep last on the list, but there are many reasons not to let that happen. Coaches Megan Roberts, Clay Higgins, and Zach Moore are with me today to discuss the specific benefits of getting good sleep, as well as evidence-based steps you can take if you’re struggling with persistent thoughts at night or waking too early.
