The most recent Olympic Games in Tokyo were highly controversial for going forward despite the pandemic and resistance from the local community. Many debates have been held on whether those Games were a success or a failure, and importantly, for whom? The games were certainly exceptional due to the pandemic. Still, on the other hand, they were similar to previous games in many ways, such as by exceeding the budget and involving human rights concerns that are rarely mentioned in the ‘official' Olympic narratives. In today's episode with Drs. Mac Ross and Michael McDougall, we will have a critical conversation of the potential dark sides of the Olympics. We start off by reflecting a bit on skateboarding as a new Olympic sport and the management of meaning that takes place when new 'sports' are included. We then ask about the impact of the Olympics on local communities and whether the Games are doing more harm than good, especially for the worlds most vulnerable populations. Dr. Michael McDougall is an Assistant professor of psychology at Keystone College, specializing in culture, sport and organizations, Dr. Mac Ross is an Assistant professor of kinesiology at Western University in London, Ontario, where he teaches history, sociology and management of sport.

We cannot create meaning out of nowhere, but we always depend on culture to provide us with a horizon of significance. But what kind of "thing" is culture? Can we create a winning culture, a healthy culture, or meaningful culture around sport? Or are any attempts to manage culture simply colonialist projects that will inevitably marginalise and silence other meanings that are not part of the "official" narrative? Dr Michael McDougall completed his PhD focused on a critical examination of organisational culture research in sport at Liverpool John Moores University and teaches psychology at Keystone College in the US. He is researching various topics including cultures in sport and organisational contexts, meaningful work, craftsmanship, and well-being.

Why should people lose their homes for a hockey game to happen? The Olympic Games has been celebrated as a way of bringing people together and providing inspiration for the spectators. However, it is rarely mentioned that in many host cities, hundreds if not thousands of people have been displaced from their homes for the Games to take place. As our guests have argued in their article in Washington Post, "The Olympics is a disaster for people who live in host cities". This episode examines this statement and whether there is hope for a better future. In this second part of our conversation with Drs Mac Ross and Michael McDougall, we examine the serious human rights issues that have accompanied the hosting of the Olympic Games. Dr Michael McDougall is an Assistant professor of psychology at Keystone College, specializing in culture, sport and organizations, Dr Mac Ross is an Assistant professor of kinesiology at Western University in London, Ontario, where he teaches history, sociology and management of sport.

The second part of our episode with Dr Michael McDougall focuses on culture, meaningful work and management of meaning. While it is very intuitive to think that aiming to create more meaningful work (or sport) is a worthy goal in organisations, so-called 'management of meaning' can be problematic in many levels. Our guest will ask critical questions and challenge us to think about the ethics around interventions aimed at culture change and meaningful work, and reflect on his own professional practice around these themes.Dr Michael McDougall has completed his PhD focused on a critical examination of organisational culture research in sport at Liverpool John Moores University and teaches psychology at Keystone College in the US. He is conducting research on various topics including cultures in sport and organisational contexts, meaningful work, craftsmanship, and well-being. And while his work is certainly critical and thought provoking, he also engages in consultation work and puts this thinking into practice in organisational contexts.

What are the most interesting advances in qualitative research in sports and physical activity science? Three qualitative researchers share their views!Dr Signe Højbjerre Larsen is an Associate Professor at the University of Southern Denmark. Her research focuses on play and lifestyle sports in the fields of philosophy of sport, sociology of sport and cultural analysis. Her work explores how cultural analytical approaches can contribute to a critical understanding of bodies and lifestyle sports and their societal significance. Dr Michael McDougall is an Assistant Professor at Keystone College, US. His research has focused on organisational cultures in elite sport, but he is also exploring people’s experience of work, sport and well-being more broadly.Dr Toni Williams is a Senior Lecturer at Leeds Beckett University, UK. Her research explores the factors that facilitate and constrain a physically active lifestyle for people with spinal cord injury. Her research interests also include narrative inquiry, disability studies, psychology of injury and rehabilitation, and qualitative meta-synthesis. She is a founding member of the International Society of Qualitative Research in Sport and Exercise.
We cannot create meaning out of nowhere, but we always depend on culture to provide us with a horizon of significance. But what kind of "thing" is culture? Can we create a winning culture, a healthy culture, or meaningful culture around sport? Or are any attempts to manage culture simply colonialist projects that will inevitably marginalise and silence other meanings that are not part of the "official" narrative?Dr Michael McDougall completed his PhD focused on a critical examination of organisational culture research in sport at Liverpool John Moores University and teaches psychology at Keystone College in the US. He is researching various topics including cultures in sport and organisational contexts, meaningful work, craftsmanship, and well-being.
Randy Kritkausky – Without ReservationAired Wednesday, September 2, 2020 at 5:00 PM PST / 8:00 PM ESTIn 1940, Thomas Wolfe’s novel, You Can’t Go Home Again, was published posthumously. The fictional story line addresses the issue of our roots and whether we may return to them, physically and spiritually, and what we will find when we do. If we had the means of travelling back and reconnecting with generations past, what would we learn? How would their lives and their connection to the world they lived in, including their relationship with each other, nature and spirituality, afford us an opportunity for reflection and renewal? Can we truly go home again? My guest this week on Destination Unlimited, Randy Kritkausky, lived this experience. He journeyed into the realm of his ancestral Native American connections and intimate encounters with Mother Earth and says we all have the ability to spiritually reconnect with our ancestors and nature. Episode 24 features Agent Palmer (Jason Stershic) remastering the radio program that was his capstone project as a Senior at Keystone College, which helped him to graduate with a Bachelors's Degree in Communications, titled "To Change Your Luck." The syllabus for the course that this project came from states that the goal was “aimed at providing students with the opportunity to demonstrate both critical and creative thinking skills and the research capabilities they have acquired as Professional Studies Communications Arts and Humanities majors.” The project abstract was “to write and produce a sixty-minute radio program about a trip I took to Israel that helped me to grow. In this program I hope to pass along the wisdom of a Jewish proverb that “sometimes to change your luck, you need to change your location.” Mentioned and Helpful Links from This Episode AgentPalmer.com Agent Palmer on Patreon Tweets @ThePalmerFiles @AgentPalmer You can also hear more Palmer in the meantime on Our Liner Notes, a musical conversation podcast with host Chris Maier and as mentioned on this show as co-host of The Podcast Digest with Dan Lizette. Eric Tecce is a Polymathic Artist who’s journey has been shaped through endless acts of creativity. He was born under a Sagittarius Sun with a Gemini Rising in Brooklyn, New York. At a young age, his family moved to the Poconos in Pennsylvania where Nature became the forefront of his studies. There he grew up attending Pocono Mountain High School where every opportunity was spent in the art rooms exploring all the available mediums as his artistic abilities blossomed into being.By the time he graduated, he used his creativity to make his own career with a fully operational online business screen printing his own artwork onto apparel. Eric had his work featured in numerous Art Shows, Exhibitions, & Video Games and even traveled on tour by high school’s end. With no set direction, he followed suggestions to attend Keystone College majoring in Fine Arts. It wasn’t until his fourth year did the realization of the debt system kick in and all the rabbit holes that come with to find the true reality of the world we live in.Since graduating from college, he moved along the Appalachian Trail reconnecting in nature where he returned to his roots of BEing. During those years he developed many of his subtle senses ranging from intuition, full spectrum visualization, and exploring dreams beyond the waking state. He balanced these metaphysical practices with working as freelance polymathic artist while illustrating multiple series of Esoteric themed ‘Visual Awakenings’ under his creative outlet, The Deep Forest. It wouldn’t be long until various one of a kind nature inspired crafts & sculptures were launched in his shop under Earthly Creations. Since then he has spent the last 2 years developing his yet to be titled Tarot Deck which features the culmination of all the occultic & symbolic understandings thus far in panoramic suits. As of today, the Tarot Deck is nearly complete with an estimated launch sometime in mid-2018.EricTecce.comTheDeepForest.org

Back in the day, coaches received training at was then called Coaches' College. Begun in the late 80s by the United States Fencing Association, its purpose was to create an opportunity for professional development for fencing coaches. When the cold war ended, the USFA brought Soviet bloc coaches over in 1990 to lead the program with Jack Keene serving as the main organizer. Alex Beguinet and Vinnie Bradford took up the reins in 1993. Vinnie helped organize it for 10 years, Alex for 20. The USFA decided to cancel the Coaches' College in 2003. The United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) started the Coaches' Academy last year to fill the professional development void. Only 8 coaches attended but the spark was created. The Academy this year, organized by Gary Vanderwege, had triple the number of participants. It featured a Moniteur level session from July 30-Aug 3, and an advanced (Prevot and Master) level session from Aug 2-6. The USFCA Annual General meeting was held Aug 3 and several special awards were given out. The main purpose of the Coaches' Academy was to prepare coaches for their certification exams, with most sessions being led by fencing Masters like Peter Burchard, Gary Vanderwege, Paul Sise, Vinnie Bradford, and Jen Oldham. Ariana Klinkov and David Sierra also were on hand to help guide participants. In addition there were sessions such as sport psychology, the business side of being a fencing coach, armory sessions led by Michael Mergens, referee seminars, yoga, watching Dan Kellner give Sam Moelis a high-level Foil lesson, a roundtable discussion about coach vs referee ethics, among others. All in all the Coaches' Academy appears to be getting off to a strong start, as evidenced by the comments from the participants. Listen now to their input about what they experienced at Keystone College in Pennsylvania in early August.
Michael "Mergs" Mergens, is a USFA certified Armorer, Coach and Referee with over 35 years of experience in the sport of Fencing. He regularly works as the Head Armorer and Team Armorer for many of the USA Fencing National and International events. He is the owner of the online Armorer’s Store (http://www.thearmorersstore.com) and is the author of the well-known book called The Care and Feeding of all Things Fencing. Mergs graduated from Texas A&M in 1977 with an engineering degree and belonged to the Corps of Cadets and Parson’s Mounted Calvary. He went on to serve in the US Army and was stationed in Bosnia and Iraq. He also was a part of many projects for NASA, including the creation of a trash compactor for the Space Station. This is one smart man!! Listen now to the interview I did with him in the cafeteria of Keystone College in Pennsylvania where we were both attending the Coaches’ Academy.
