Season 2: Forensic Interviewer Growth Continuum Episode 2: Unveiling the NCAC Pathways Model: Building deeper understanding of forensic interviewer training Forensic interviewers have a responsibility to stay up to date with best practices to guarantee that they are providing the best forensic interview possible. They can do this by participating in relevant and ongoing training. This spans from their first core training to advanced, specialized topics and everything in-between.  In this episode, we will explore the National Children's Advocacy Center new PATHWAYS approach to developing forensic interviewers, answering; What is PATHWAYS, how will it shift mindset in the field about training, and share some key takeaways for supervisors of forensic interviewers.   Episode Transcript Show Notes: In today's insightful episode, we're joined by Christina Rouse and a distinguished team of trainers from the National Children's Advocacy Center (NCAC) - Andra Chamberlin, Kim Madden, and Linda Cordisco Steele. The NCAC has an esteemed history, training over 200,000 child abuse professionals since 1985, and they are now developing a revolutionary approach to forensic interviewer training.  Recognizing a need to bridge the gap between basic and advanced interviewing skills, they're introducing a new training model called “Pathways.”  This model aims to improve integration of basic skills, preparing interviewers for more complex, topic-specific situations, and caters to different learning styles and levels of experience.   In their discussion, Andra, Kim, and Linda underline three critical skills for effective interviewing: the skillful use of a continuum of questions, providing social support, and exercising critical thinking.  These skills are key in eliciting narrative responses from children, supporting their unique needs, and guiding the direction of the interview.  But Pathways doesn't stop there; it also tackles challenges faced by both new and experienced interviewers, emphasizing skill development, case-specific training, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.  Andra  previews their upcoming ‘Beyond the Basics' curriculum, Kim explores the vital role of collaboration within investigative teams, and Linda stresses the importance of supportive supervision for the professional growth and wellbeing of interviewers. NRCAC Team Talk

EPISODE SUMMARY When examining the multidisciplinary team response to child abuse in communities, there are two principles that I believe to must be considered. The first is that MDT's are sophisticated and complex systems that are tasked with providing a coordinated and comprehensive response to child abuse. The second is that no single discipline on an MDT can adequately meet the needs of a victim of child abuse. One would think that such a system tasked with such an important mandate would have a clear leadership structure to ensure that the best possible services are being provided. However, that is not always the case. In this episode, I speak with Chris Newlin, the Executive Director of the National Children's Advocacy Center who shares with us a conceptual model of multilevel shared leadership for MDTs that provides a framework and pathway to more robust and sustainable MDT response to child abuse in your community.    GUEST: Chris Newlin, MS LPC, is the Executive Director of the National Children's Advocacy Center where he is responsible for providing leadership and management of the NCAC and participating in national and international training and leadership activities regarding the protection of children. The NCAC was the first Children's Advocacy Center (CAC) in the world and provides child abuse prevention and intervention services in Huntsville/Madison County; and also houses the NCAC Training Center, the Southern Regional Children's Advocacy Center, the NCAC Virtual Training Center, and the Child Abuse Library Online (CALiO™). The NCAC is a past multi-year winner of the Better Business Bureau's Torch Award for Workplace Ethics; 2012 Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce Non-Profit of the Year; 2016 Federal Bureau of Investigation Director's Community Leadership Award recipient; (multi-year finalist), winner in 2016 and 2019 of the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce Best Places to Work; and a Private Sector Member of the Virtual Global Taskforce. Chris has more than 22 years of experience working in CACs as a Forensic Interviewer, Victim Advocate, Therapist, Clinical Director, and Executive Director. Chris has provided diverse training related to the Children's Advocacy Center Model, the multidisciplinary response to child abuse, the international development of Children's Advocacy Centers, forensic interviewing, best practices in child abuse intervention and response, and additional child maltreatment and exploitation topics in more than 30 countries throughout the world. He has worked in both urban and rural Children's Advocacy Centers. Welcome to Episode 71 of The Podcast About Division III Baseball. This is our fifth of eight regional preview pods -- this one covers the Mideast region and its five conferences. Before we begin, we quickly discuss the weekend that was in D3, the status of the SCIAC, and shoutout North Central (IL) for their no-no. Then we get down to business: AMCC (at 7:00) La Roche has their longtime head coach back and plenty of talent as always, but will need some young pitching to step up if they want to dominate this conference as usual HCAC (at 11:25) Franklin has proved capable of competing against better teams and appear primed to win this conference again The HCAC is probably a bit underrated, with Anderson, Transylvania, Rose-Hulman, and Earlham all capable of having strong seasons MIAA (at 17:00) Adrian has almost all of their seniors back for #Year5 and two of the best pitchers in the entire country; is this the year they finally go on a super deep run? There is Hope...for the Dutchmen to make some noise in this conference as well NCAC (at 26:00) Wooster still has plenty of top-tier talent but enters the season with far more inexperience than normal Denison has some key players back for #Year5 and a fearsome lineup, but will need some of the younger pitching to step up DePauw and Wittenberg could definitely make some noise as well OAC (at 40:30) Heidelberg has some of their 2019 World Series contributors back for #Year5, which should help them continue to contend Baldwin Wallace looks to have a pretty loaded lineup but a very young pitching staff Otterbein, John Carroll, Mount Union, Ohio Northern will surely all be in the mix as well Uh oh...is Marietta back? PAC (at 59:10) Washington & Jefferson shouldn't have any trouble in this conference -- we'll see if they can make another World Series run UAA (at 1:04:05) Case Western won't be able to play their usual insanely tough schedule but are still making the most of the difficult and unique situation We concluded (at 1:08:00) with a few other notable player shout outs, our player and pitcher of the year picks for the region, and our teams to beat. Whitney is a science teacher at Waiakea High School on Hawaiʻi Island. In a personal statement she wrote: “My overarching aspirations in the next twenty years of my career aim to: 1) contextualize science and math education to be grounded in both western and indigenous ways of knowing: 2) continue to empower teachers to gain greater control over their curricula, and: 3) reestablish teacher credibility to make decisions for the school and district systems.” Whitney is a PhD Candidate in Curriculum Studies at the College of Education at UH Manoa.
