POPULARITY
HELLO SERIES 5! Today's guest today is a DJ, producer, composer and entrepreneur, Geoff Kirkwood. Professionally known as DJ Man Power he has built a solid reputation as an eclectic producer who nimbly steps between, Disco, House and Techno whilst casually stopping off along the way for grand scale projects, such as composing for the Royal Northern Sinfonia. His reputation as a DJ has seen him selected to curate a Radio 1 essential mix and allowed him to travel the world playing in legendary spots like Glastonbury, the Panorama bar in Berlin and Burning Man Festival in the USA. But perhaps the most important and interesting thing about this journey has been the way he has taken the culmination of these experiences and invested them in his home town of North Shields. Whether it is through breathing life into an old working mans club with his regular night 'Are you affiliated' or investing in a community hub close by, where creatives can collaborate and make their art on their terms, Geoff has kept his feet firmly on the ground whilst reaching for the stars and I am very excited to welcome DJ Man Power today on What Goes Around.BEFORE THAT...We talk to Patrick Clarke about his excellent new book about Soft Cell 'Bedsit Land'.Deb gets the rap-beef update from Eamon and both of them decide that you should live your best life. Young partygoers might know Man Power, AKA Geoff Kirkwood, as the earnest geezer going back-to-back with DJs like Ewan McVicar, Paul Woolford, La La and Skream—peak-time specialists with a fine line in boofy bangers and ravey techno. Kirkwood is also a dab hand at the kind of elliptical house and deep cut detours favored by '00s labels like DFA and Optimo. In spite of a long track record as a producer and promoter, if you had to boil Kirkwood's work in recent years down to a single quality, it might be altruism. He hails from North Shields, a small town fringing the boundary of Newcastle in England's oft-neglected North East, and wears his heritage proudly. The Me Me Me label boss's involvement in a flurry of civic restoration, and no-filter paeans to the importance of working class involvement in culture, have become as central to his life as music-making itself. For an accomplished DJ who has played at nearly every good club you could name, that's no small feat. So which side of Man Power were we in for? The answer on RA.940 is: both. '60s free verse poetry, Zebra Katz, Gesaffelstein and John Carpenter in the opening stretch? Makes sense. Octave One punching through Rozalla? You got it. An extended Joe Claussell workout atop Radiohead's "Everything In Its Right Place"? Why not. In Kirkwood's hands, it all goes down as smooth as a pint of Newcastle Brown. @manpower-1 Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/940

This week we will discuss several people who unwittingly became members of the North Shield's Death Cult. How does one become a member of a cult without knowing? The leader of this group was manipulative and preyed on vulnerable people. One of the four members of this group would unfortunately lose his life. Listen to today's case and let us know your thoughts! Do you think Zahid Zaman, Ann Corbett, Myra Wood, and Kay Rayworth received appropriate consequences for their actions? 183 key workers and community volunteers were amongst royals, politicians and world leaders in Westminster Abbey for the Queen's state funeral on Monday. One woman who was asked to be an eyewitness to this historic day was Lynn McManus, from North Shields, in Tyne and Wear. She's the founder of The Tim Lamb's Children's Centre and Pathways4All, a parent-led charity providing play and leisure for disabled children. She was recognised in the Queen's last Birthday Honours List in June 2022 with an MBE for her services to children with disabilities. A 2019 YouGov survey found that one in five men have no close friends — twice the proportion for women. What pressure might this be putting on their female partners, to fulfil the role of best friend and hold the social calendar? And what tools can men learn to help maintain friendships? Max Dickins is an author, playwright and comedian, and has written Billy No-Mates: How I Realised Men Have a Friendship Problem. He joins Emma to discuss. Liz Truss is heading to New York today, making her first foreign trip as Prime Minister as she attends the annual United Nations General Assembly. During her two-day trip she is due to have meetings with US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron. This will be her first test in building international relationships and trust in the UK. So does the former foreign secretary have the interpersonal skills to build strong relationships? Joining Emma to discuss are deputy political editor for the Spectator Katy Balls and Bronwen Maddox the new director and CEO of Chatham House. A 22-year-old Iranian woman has died days after being arrested by morality police for allegedly not complying with strict rules on head coverings. Eyewitnesses said Mahsa Amini was beaten while inside a police van after being picked up in Tehran last Tuesday, and died on Friday after spending three days in a coma. It is the latest in a series of reports of brutality against women by authorities in Iran in recent weeks. Tehran's police chief says the death of a woman in custody was an "unfortunate" incident he does not want repeated. BBC Woman Affairs correspondent for the Near East, Faranak Amidi joins Emma with the latest. The Married Women's Association was formed in 1938 by a former suffragette and its main aim was to ensure that men and women would be treated as equals in the union of marriage - both legally and financially. Their members included the first female barrister and the first female BBC executive, as well as the writer Vera Britain, so why are they not well known, and how influential were they? Dr Sharon Thompson, presenter of the Quiet Revolutionaries podcast, who has also written a book of the same name, joins Emma.
Dear ones, My life is a f**king magazine. Pages of projects, my life, twixting and twaining. I've grown up in them. You are your experience, and in the same way that you are what you sleep with, you become what you do, I guess.I wasn't sure whether to hammer your inboxes daily with micro-content, a la Patti Smith, in the run-up to my biggest news to date (beyond Psychomachia) or to just throw it ALL down here.Because what I really want to share is our. Beautiful. Single. (You can nab a pre-order of here). But it feels more honourable to make a cover star award of Geoff Travis, founder of Rough Trade - arguably the most important indie label in the history of the British recording industry. We met as judges on the Doc n Roll Festival, he memorably said, “I bet you like performing,” as we hustled together for a group shot. He's right. Just gotta stay away from manifesting drama in one's personal life, and love you what you do - but like all those Wellness Live Ya Best Life aspirational platitudes - how do you jump off the cliff by a bungy rope if you ain't stapled in financially? When I went back to university at 25, bounding in all Educating Rita, like a spring daisy from another nervous breakdown/rehab (again), I did a BA in New Media Journalism and Radio, it taught me to be pretty self-sufficient and DIY, editing across media, coding, I was working in BBC Radio as a researcher by the second year, reporting at celeb parties and on September 11th, before making radio documentaries for 1XTRA, R2, etc. Authenticity has become more and more apparent to my sanity over the years. I've taught Media Ethics, Broadcasting, Pop video courses, loads of zine workshops with victims of torture, and minority groups, after school clubs - that sort of thing before getting more and more quasi-academic, and wannabe Doctor, shifting between teaching vocational media work to City & Guilds, B-Tec, undergrads and some Masters (in a particularly sketchy institution). I've also consulted internationally for cash. I've become more and more capable over the years, but it also means I am pretty multi-skilled and good at problem solving, but it also prevents me from working to true calling. As life does for most people who have to earn a living. The reality of being a writer and performer is that without compromise to industry demands, you're on your own.Which flips me back to Geoff Travis - there was a crossover period when I was still trying to lecture and edit Ambit (Ambit won in the end, despite it being a charity, and the money not being as good as teaching, I felt more committed to the responsibility of helming this great institution).I invited Travis to give a guest lecture when I was leading a class on the Music Industry to American undergrads (employed by the brilliant writer, Heidi Dunbar James). I was surprised what I knew, despite having written about music since my early days, DJing etc, you may know from PSYCHOMACHIA, which examines the patriarchal nature of the 90s music industry as fiction, I've been around it forever - before editing Ambit I was the “Off The Floor” editor of the arts on DJMag, but have never felt part of the boys club - despite knowing so many of the wheeler dealers who have hustled through life making money from music - we all feel like outsiders sometimes. My DJ moniker took a non-female angle, K-Rocka - a nickname, and it was through doing a series of lectures about the music industry in the UK, I kinda realised that actually I'm likely qualified as much as anyone else - but the guest lecture from Geoff Travis was landmark - I hope you may have time to listen to this founder of Rough Trade, I've added the lecture as a podcast here. It's a masterclass in independence. He's very cool, casually reeling out how he didn't sign The Stone Roses, and being at one of The Strokes first gigs, and not knowing that one of The Libertines was going to end up a heroin addict. There's also the pain of board meetings, not really being in it for the money, and the backend of the music industry. It's solid - thank you to the students of that class for their questions…Gil and I started sharing our work live in 2018. He's what one may call a “professional musician”, his first A&R was John Niven and he's been signed to major labels and produced John Martyn among others. He was performing with Little Barrie when we met, at a book reading for Tony O'Neill (who also used to work in music, playing keys for my friend Kelli Ali, but also Kenickie, Marc Almond and others. His first book, Digging the Vein was published by Wrecking Ball Press who put my novel out). Gil and I became friends after that signing, and in the maelstrom of our relationship, his band with Little Barrie imploded - as bands do - despite their only single as Pet Weapons being loved and played by Lauren Laverne.Gil commenced on The Long Road of who am I, why am I, etc. The important road.We collaborated before we got together - co-writing a poem that introduced him at Red Gallery, 15 December 2015. And by NOLA, 2018, we were making a film for Jeffrey Wengrofsky's festival in NYC, me writing a poem, chalking it up in the streets, filmed, and Gil then made music to accompany it. We later showed it at the Liminality show at Gallery46, first performing together there. We then played other galleries, like the Bomb Factory in North London. In Berlin, The Social, Pikes Ibiza. We've now done a couple of tours. Our friend Martyn Goodace did the Das Wasteland compilation which was our first release, on vinyl, from Berlin days…We met Blang! Records boss Joe, who works with Paul and Jules, Beth and La, with his wife, after the first show we did out of lockdown, in Sheffield at Sidney & Matilda, a great venue, supporting Band of Holy Joy. (There's a documentary about Blang! Records which is worth finding - about antifolk and why they started)The sound guy at Sidney & Matilda was good, turned me onto local hip-hop poet Otis Mensah - but in the basement, people were conditioned to not stand close to each other and it felt like we were defo sharing air. By the end of the tour - it was a futile underground party of sweat-filled sardine dancing in venues in Edinburgh and North Shields. But that first night, it was that kinda romantic dream: a record label coming up to you after a show and showing interest. Blang! Records were later doing a residency at the Hope n Anchor is Islington and asked us to play. We filmed the shows for them, and they offered to put out a single. Initially it was suggested we did it with Pink Eye Club on the flipside, but we played them Rock n Roll Is A Deathwish, after they'd chosen Paradise Burns - that's what's coming. There are 50 lathe-cuts. The artwork's by the brilliant Bert Gilbert - “northern Marina Abramović” - who's showing at the forthcoming Horror show at Somerset House, curated by Jane Pollard and Ian Forsyth (who directed 20000 Days with Nick Cave). We've done a beautiful UV spot bespoke print and they really are limited and beautiful. Bert used Gustave Doré as her main influence on the piece. A modernised rising of a new enlightenment, we can but dream.David Erdos has been super-kind in his review of the single in International Times. Comparing us to everyone between early Dylan (the first record I ever DJed was Subterranean Homesick Blues), and my vox being halfway between Wendy James and Siouxie Sioux. (It's in that link…he's a genius, love his acting too…)****I would like to invite you to our single launch at Rough Trade East on Wednesday - there are some free tickets, but they are going fast…Jonny Halifax Invocation, Sharon Gal, Savage Pencil, Gil, some poets, we'll all be celebrating the first look of The War Issue of Ambit, which coincidently is equinox (the end of summer) and World Peace Day. I began talking about this “War issue” of Ambit back in 2020, with a submission that stood out, and went public on it in April. It's resulted in 50+ international contributors selected by myself and my brilliant co-editors in Beirut, Sarah Chalabi and Zeina Chamseddine of Dongola Books. We launch in Beirut, supported by British Council Lebanon, 18 November. There's so much to say about this issue - and the magazine does it. Order here. It's a reaction to the spectacle of War we receive in mass media through mainly direct experiences from Poets, Writers, Artists. For me, it says more than most news orgs.****If you sneak onto our Bandcamp - you'll see the artwork, but as there's a holiday tomorrow, perhaps I'll have time to make a lil video.x. My guest in this episode is friend and colleague Stephen Boyle. Stephen was born and grew up in a small fishing town in the Northeast of England called North Shields with the city metropolis of Newcastle only eight miles away. After University in Sheffield and then a time living and working in London, he took the big step in 1995 to move to the US which is where he has lived for almost all of the last 26 years. Most of that time has been spent in Southern California although there were spells in Atlanta and Seattle which is where we met. Today he has the good fortune to live in Carmel in a house he and his wife Kim have spent the last three years building. Stephen clearly still feels a very strong connection to the Northeast of England and that is a theme that runs through his song choices but also his shows in his love of football and Newcastle United in particular. That said he does tell a fascinating story of being a 13-year-old and going over to the dark side for a year when a next-door neighbor moved from Newcastle United to play for fierce local rival Sunderland (and they won the FA Cup!) . In amongst the music, we talk about being born in his Grandparents house and the close relationship Stephen had with them, favourite concert venues in the US and his view of America in 1995 and how that has changed somewhat today. Like a lot of guests David Bowie is a major figure in Stephen's musical journey and two of his song choices are Bowie songs but in an interesting twist neither are performed by the great man himself. Stephen's song choices are :· 60's - The Animals House of the Rising Sun · 70's - Mott The Hoople All the Young Dudes · 80's - Bruce Springsteen The River · 90's - Sting Englishman In New York · 00's - U2 Beautiful Day · 10's - Nine Inch Nails I Can't Give Everything Away · 00's - Devon Gilfillian The Good LifeEnjoy :-)

Everyone Dies In Sunderland: A podcast about growing up terrified in the eighties and nineties
At 8am on Friday August 1981 the phone rang at Ripon police station. A voice announced police would find “a decomposed body among the willow herbs” at a particular grid reference close to Sutton Bank top. The caller refused to give a name “for reasons of national security” and hung up. Police attended the scene and, at popular picnic site, found the bones of a naked woman in a large patch of Rosebay Willow, in a case that became known as “the nude in the nettles”.Even though it wasn't nettles. We know she wore pink Max Factor Nail Varnish. We know she might have had some yoghurt prior to her death. We've even got a good idea what she looked like. But to this day, we don't know how she died, how she got there, or even who she was.We also take a look back at 1981, when simply everyone was trying to assassinate world leaders! Along the way: Riots! Royal Weddings! Motorway pile-ups involving Eurovision winners! The disadvantages of owning a Delorean! Harrison Ford suddenly turning up in North Shields! The best joke ever told in the history of this podcast! Claire congratulates Beyonce for not dying! John recreates the iconic rapping of Pitbull! Gareth tries to make sure that not even 23 and Me will sponsor us! Captain America crashes a six form leaving do! If you know anything all about this case, please call the North Yorkshire Cold Case Review Unit on 01609 643292 or email at ColdCaseReviewUnit@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk. In this podcast, I'm talking to a visually impaired man who's written a book looking back at his time attending two schools for the blind in the 1960s and 70s. Writing under the name Paul Tyrone, Arthur Turner from North Shields has just published Out of Bounds, which is an honest reflexion on his time at the Royal Victoria School for the Blind in Newcastle, and Worcester College for the Blind. Not only did Arthur and his chums explore the roofs during his time at Worcester, he went underground as well. But there's much more in the book than these intrepid extra-curricular activities.
Tales of mums popping up in unexpected places, Steve Holden having trouble with his Balearics and Indiana Jones being spotted in North Shields. What!!
Thomas Sinclair Leinster of North Shields might have been a master mariner but he definitely wasn't a master criminal. The story of his disastrous 1894 attempt at insurance fraud on the high seas is a tragic tale of farce, incompetence, high comedy and a fake beard.https://ko-fi.com/coastalstorieshttps://twitter.com/PodcastCoastal

Thanks to Jameson, we’re serving you an extra tipple this week – a special bonus ep with the wonderful Sam Fender. Whilst sipping on delicious cocktails, Sam tells us where he’s most excited about performing when things go back to normal and for one of his Nights Worth Waiting For he is longing for a ‘staff curry’ at his favourite restaurant in North Shields. He tells us about recording his new album in Ireland and why he chose to cover Lindisfarne's’ ‘Winter Song’ for his new single. What a charming guy, Sam – we love you! For this episode, I welcome fellow Geordie and good friend Sam Fender to the studio! In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past two years, I’ll tell you a little bit about Sam. Sam is a singer songwriter from North Shields who has become somewhat of a living legend around Newcastle since releasing his #1 debut album Hypersonic Missiles and winning the BRITs Critics Choice Award in 2019. Today, we chat about the struggles of being a teen, dealing with heartbreak, toxic masculinity and embarrassing moments.
Since being discovered in a pub by Ben Howard's manager, Sam Fender’s career has exploded – he won the Critics’ Choice Award at the 2019 Brit Awards, while his debut album Hypersonic Missiles landed at Number 1 in the UK when it was released in late 2019. It might sound like a scenario plucked from a Hollywood movie – struggling musician gets spotted by a manager and goes on to become famous. But Sam’s upbringing was about as far from Hollywood as you could get. Raised in the working class Northern England town of North Shields, he grew up in a broken home where money was tight, and from a young age saw family members struggle with mental health. Not surprisingly, the rush of success was a lot to take in. We talk about that and more in this interview, which took place just before the release of Hypersonic Missiles, when Sam was still getting used to his new life.
L Devine is a pop singer-songwriter from Newcastle. Currently undertaking a 'URL Tour' across her Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok and YouTube accounts, keep an eye out for live-streams of performances. In episode 22 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed considering unexpected events, inspirations and situations, the responsibility of Instagram takeovers and the importance of collaboration. Plus this week photographer Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen takes on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which she answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen is a Finnish photographer who has worked in Britain since the 1960s. Intending to pursue photography as a career, she was apprenticed to a fashion photographer in Helsinki for a year before studying photography in London in the 1960s, and co-founding the Amber Collective in Newcastle in 1969. From 1969 Konttinen lived in Byker, and for seven years photographed and interviewed the residents of this area of terraced houses until her own house was demolished. This work resulted in the book Byker. Konttinen's next project was a study of girls attending dance schools in North Shields, their mothers, and the schools, resulting in the book Step-by-Step. The book was an influence for the film Billy Elliot. www.amber-online.com/collection/byker The image discussed (Girl on a Spacehopper, 1971. Talented singer-songwriter Afnan Prince has already released material, but is most excited about his forthcoming EP, Wolves. Born in Pakistan, Afnan moved to the UK with his family when he was nine and by his mid teens had started playing the guitar and singing. The 28-year-old self-taught musician, who lives in North Shields, initially started playing in a band with his friends but gradually realised he preferred performing as a solo artist. Afnan, has always been creative, and as well as writing songs, he writes poetry as he feels the two go hand in hand, offering him the freedom to elaborate with words. His passion for the English language made him choose to study the subject at university, but things didn’t go according to plan.
Indie-funk group Driving In Aspen are hoping to make a name for themselves on the local music scene. The fledging three-piece, who hail from North Shields, are currently working on their debut EP which they hope to release next year. However, it is definitely a work in progress as the band are recording it one song at a time due to juggling studying and music. The teenage trio – made up of lead vocalist and guitarist Peter Dyers, Matthew McDonald on percussion and bassist Andrew Thompson - all grew up with their own influences and musical interests, but it wasn’t until summer 2014 that they came together as a group.
Neil Tennant, singer of pop duo Pet Shop Boys, grew up in the fishing port of North Shields and went to a Catholic school in Newcastle. He talks to Philip Dodd about the influence of the North East on his career, which began in publishing and magazines. Last year the Pet Shop Boys performed at the closing ceremony of the London Olympics and they have just returned from a tour which has taken them to 29 countries.

He grew to love radio when bedbound as a child because of severe asthma, and became a radio broadcaster on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. In 1944, he made the leap to American radio with The Alan Young Show, NBC's summer replacement for Eddie Cantor. Following a move to ABC in the fall (1944-46), he returned to NBC (1946-49). His television version of The Alan Young Show began in 1950. After the show's cancellation, Young appeared in supporting parts in films such as The Time Machine (1960). Alan Young learned the radio craft in Canada and broke into American Radio after being fired from his first Canadian show Stag Party after asking for pay higher than the $15 per week he was earning. After working on a summer show for Eddie Cantor, Young earned his own show, The Alan Young Show, combining situation comedy and hilarious gags. He ventured into TV with television version The Alan Young Show which won him an Emmy in 1951. Then along came a talking horse. Mister Ed premiered in 1961. George Burns, producer of the show, was behind the decision to cast Young. Said George, "Alan was the type of man that a horse would want to talk to."
