My guest on the program is Jorn Swart of the neoclassical project Doeke — spelt D O E K E — Doeke creates remarkably beautiful neoclassical piano compositions, has a delicate touch and sensibilities steeped in nostalgia and memory. Our conversation took us through splendid places, like the beauty found in small details, working within the flow state, learning to let go and balance the ego, and so many other fascinating topics. For tenor saxophonist, composer, bandleader, educator and artist Roxy Coss, jazz education is everything. When we talked in July, she and her husband, saxophonist, educator and composer, Lucas Pino, just returned from their week-long session as co-directors of the Brubeck Jazz Summit, (yes, that Brubeck-Dave Brubeck) a week-long intensive emersion of jazz education and performance for talented students worldwide. To participate, young people must have exceptional capacity. To teach, your credentials must be superior. In this episode, Roxy Coss shares her deep thoughts and intense feelings about two of her major passions: jazz education and creating an environment in the jazz ecosystem that values women and nonbinary individuals. Roxy also reveals a more personal side of herself as we talk about the socio-political-pandemic choked environment that has embraced our nation since 2016 and how these have influenced her compositions in all her recordings as a group leader. Roxy founded WIJO-Women in Jazz Organization in July 2017, a collective of over 500 professional jazz musicians and composers who identify as women or gender non-binary. WIJO is largely a New York-based organization, but it has made connections to other individuals and groups nationally and internationally to address the many inequities in the jazz music industry. Roxy currently serves as its president. It has various programs including a popular mentorship program, WIJO Mentors. It also sponsors concerts and jam sessions. In Roxy's music education career, she had numerous outstanding opportunities since she was five years old. She actually composed at an early age when she was in third grade, writing her first award-winning composition in a city-wide contest called “Reflections.” Later, she attended Garfield High School (alumnae/i include Ernestine Anderson, Quincy Jones and Jimi Hendrix), a rich and fertile place for Roxy's jazz education. She was a member of the Garfield HS Jazz Band when they set a record in 2003 and 2004. It is the only band to win the first-place trophy in two consecutive years in the highly competitive Essentially Ellington contest. The band also placed first in 2009 and 2010. Roxy is also a winner of the ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award. It is no wonder, then, that Roxy currently serves on the Jazz Education Network (JEN) Board of Directors and is a Jazz Faculty member at the prestigious Juilliard School. Roxy's discography includes her self-titled recording, Roxy Coss, which is a self-released album (2010), Restless Idealism (Origin, 2016), Chasing the Unicorn (Posi-tone 2017), The Future is Female (Posi-tone 2018), Roxy Coss Quintet (Outside in Music 2019), and Disparate Parts (Outside in Music 2022). Roxy plays the same instrument she's had since 2018, a P. Mauriat. There are two tracks from Roxy's latest album, Disparate Parts, thanks to Roxy and the record label, Outside in Music. The Lineup includes: Roxy Coss, saxophones; Miki Yamanaka, piano/Rhodes; Alex Wintz, guitar; Rick Rosato, bass; and, Jimmy Macbride, drums. Obviously, you've found this podcast, but I want you to know that you can find my podcast on Apple, Spotify, Amazon Music/Audible, Player FM, and iHeartRadio. We are so excited to have the amazing Camila Meza on the show! https://camilameza.com/home Meza is musically inspired by jazz guitarists like George Benson and Pat Metheny as well as being influenced by South American music and folk, she first studied with Jorge Vidal and Jorge Díaz. Increasingly oriented to Claudia Acuña from the mid-2000s she worked on the jazz scene of her hometown, where her first recording Giovanni Cultrera, Espinoza y Cia (Navidad en Jazz) was released in 2005. In 2007 she presented her debut album Skylark (Stateside). In 2009 Meza moved to New York to study guitar at The New School with Peter Bernstein, Vic Juris and Steve Cardenas. Since then she also has worked on the New York jazz scene with Ryan Keberle (Into the Zone, 2014), Lucas Pino, Fabian Almazan and directs her own jazz octet, The Nectar Orchestra. Camila Meza was born in Santiago, Chile in 1985. She got her start playing music around age 15 in her hometown in Chile. She released her first album Skylark in 2007, and moved to New York in 2009 to attend the New School for Jazz. She soon established herself on the New York scene, as a guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Camila's style fuses many different influences. She has a strong command of South American musical styles, including Samba and Bossa. With her small floating voice on top of her more jazz laden guitar playing, she is a force unto herself. Her second album,Traces, features Kendrick Scott, Matt Penman, and Shai Maestro, and received wide acclaim. In addition to releasing a good load of music, she maintains and directs her own octet, the Nectar Ensemble. Some other Musicians that she has played with are Lucas Pino, Fabian Almazan, and Steve Cardenas. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

A founding member of the Nash Composers Coalition, she is also increasingly active on the scene as an educator, including her brilliant work with the Phoenix Jazz Girls Rising program. In this engaging interview (recorded prior to the massive upheaval resulting from the global pandemic), Mary and Russ shared questions and tangents on such matters as how practice habits can morph into compositions, the connection between vibration in one’s horn and vibration in the body, and even consider how the creative process might be analogous to excavation.Learn more about Mary Petrich here:http://marypetrich.com/Learn more about the Phoenix Jazz Girls Rising program, of which she is a Co-Founder, here:https://thenash.org/education/phoenix-jazz-girls-rising/Find her most recent recording, Murmuration, here: https://www.amazon.com/Murmuration-Mary-Petrich-Openhand/dp/B019S6YOMQLearn more about some of the people, venues, works, and concepts mentioned in the podcast here:Claudia Bloom – https://www.claudiabloompianist.com/Julianne Colwell – http://voyagephoenix.com/interview/art-life-julianne-colwell/Bill Evans – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_EvansCharles Lewis – https://downtowndevil.com/?s=Charles+lewis+jazzThelonious Monk – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thelonious_MonkPam Morita – https://pamelamorita.wixsite.com/jazzTerry Riley – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_RileyWayne Shorter – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayne_ShorterMonica Shriver – http://www.monicashriver.com/Brice Winston – http://www.bricewinston.com/The Nash – https://thenash.org/The Language of the Unknown – https://www.audaud.com/the-language-of-the-unknown-the-wayne-shorter-quartet-blu-ray-2014/Tread On The Trail – http://www.sonoloco.com/rev/composers/glo/trail/trail.htmlUniversity of Exeter Study on the Different Effects of Poetry and Prose on the Brain – https://www.redorbit.com/news/science/1112971504/effects-of-poetry-on-the-brain-101013/Collaborative Piano – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collaborative_pianoDrop the Needle – https://nafme.org/drop-the-needle/Motivic Cell – http://composersguide.com/motivic-cells/Thanks for listening!PLEASE SUBSCRIBE & RATE THIS EPISODE!Website: https://www.valleyjazz.org/Social Media (Facebook): https://www.facebook.com/ValleyJazzCooperative/About The Host: Pianist/composer/educator Russell Schmidt has performed with such celebrated artists as Carl Allen, Michael Brecker, Eddie Daniels, John Hollenbeck, Joe Lovano, Gerry Mulligan, Lucas Pino, Arturo Sandoval, and Clark Terry. VJC Q&T podcast host Russell Schmidt has shared a journey in music education with violist Nancy Buck since they first met in 1995 at Bowling Green State University’s new faculty orientation. And for more than two decades, Nancy and Russ have maintained a joyous partnership on and off the concert stage. Nancy is a nationally-renown artist/teacher who presently serves as an Associate Professor of Viola at Arizona State University. She is also the Artistic Director and Co-Founder of the Arizona Violacademy. Nancy recently stopped by the MSW-Tempe studio to share questions and tangents with Russ. In this, the second of two podcasts together, they discussed why playing with others must be an “ears-over-eyes” experience, what it means to contribute texture to music, and even how varieties of chocolate might relate to a performing artist’s concept of sound.Learn more about Nancy Buck here:https://music.asu.edu/profile/nancy-buckLearn more about the Arizona Violacademy, for which she serves as Artistic Director and Co-Founder, here:https://astaaz.org/event/violacademy/Learn more about some of the people, institutions, and other topics mentioned in the podcast here:Johannes Brahms – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johannes_BrahmsElizabeth Buck – https://music.asu.edu/profile/elizabeth-buckSteven Cornelius – https://www.umb.edu/academics/cla/faculty/steven_corneliusVincenzo Sannino – https://tarisio.com/cozio-archive/cozio-carteggio/vincenzo-sannino/Shinichi Suzuki – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinichi_Suzuki_(violinist)Georg Philipp Telemann – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georg_Philipp_TelemannRayburn Wright – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rayburn_WrightBowling Green State University College of Musical Arts – https://www.bgsu.edu/musical-arts.htmlOberlin Conservatory of Music – https://www.oberlin.edu/conservatoryPennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts –https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania_Governor%27s_School_for_the_ArtsUniversity of California, Berkeley – https://www.berkeley.edu/Afro-Caribbean Music – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afro-Caribbean_musicChamber Music – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chamber_musicDance - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DanceDark Chocolate – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_chocolateKinesthetic (or Physical) Intelligence – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_intelligenceMilk Chocolate – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Types_of_chocolate#Milk_chocolateMona Lisa – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mona_LisaPlasma – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plasma_(physics)Suzuki Method – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzuki_methodViola Repertoire – https://imslp.org/wiki/List_of_Compositions_Featuring_the_ViolaWhite Chocolate – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_chocolate Thanks for listening! VJC Q&T podcast producer (and Critics Anonymous podcast co-host) Caleb Kilian has know Valley Jazz Cooperative Director Russell Schmidt for more than a decade. And for the past five years, they have worked together as colleagues at Music Serving the Word Ministries, where Caleb serves as Media Manager and Russ is Coordinator of Education. At the start of the Arizona Music Educators Association’s 2020 Conference, and with concert band and jazz ensemble competition season imminent for music educators all over the country, Russ sat down with Caleb to record a unique Questions and Tangents podcast, one in which the usual host was the interviewee, not the interviewer. Their wide-ranging dialogue encompassed such subjects as the intersection of objectivity and subjectivity in education, how a mentor teacher continues to impact his life thirty years after his passing, and even why musicians “playing in parallel” might not be as good a thing as it sounds.Learn more about Caleb Kilian and Russell Schmidt here:https://musicservingtheword.org/artist_ministersFind the Critics Anonymous podcast (co-hosted by Caleb Kilian and Robert Garza) here:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/critics-anonymous/id1480289208Learn more about some of the individuals mentioned in the podcast here:Count Basie – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Count_BasieMichael Brecker – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_BreckerGabe Condon – https://www.gabecondon.com/Duke Ellington – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke_EllingtonMaynard Ferguson – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maynard_FergusonPaul Ferguson – http://paulfergusonmusic.com/Herbie Hancock – https://www.herbiehancock.com/Neal Hefti – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neal_HeftiWoody Herman – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woody_HermanJohn Hollenbeck – https://johnhollenbeck.com/Vijay Iyer – https://vijay-iyer.com/Thad Jones – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thad_JonesStan Kenton –https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stan_KentonJoel McNeely – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joel_McNeelyMatt Mitchell – http://www.mattmitchell.us/Sammy Nestico – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sammy_NesticoBud Powell – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bud_PowellBuddy Rich – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddy_RichMaria Schneider – https://www.mariaschneider.com/Wayne Shorter – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayne_ShorterBilly Strayhorn – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_StrayhornArt Tatum – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_TatumAlexa Tarantino – https://alexatarantino.com/Rayburn Wright – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rayburn_WrightThanks for listening!PLEASE SUBSCRIBE & RATE THIS EPISODE!Website: https://www.valleyjazz.org/Social Media (Facebook): https://www.facebook.com/ValleyJazzCooperative/About The Interviewee: Pianist/composer/educator Russell Schmidt has performed with such celebrated artists as Carl Allen, Michael Brecker, Eddie Daniels, Joe Lovano, Gerry Mulligan, Lucas Pino, Arturo Sandoval, and Clark Terry. Well podcast, here we are again. I have a great episode for you today with saxophonist and composer Lucas Pino. In addition to discussing his personal story, including growing up in Phoenix, and his time at the Brubeck Institute and the New School, we touched on many important things such as what he would include in a college music program of his own design, the importance of being aware of your emotional state when practicing--a key phrase that came up a lot during this conversation was self-worth. We also discussed the role of discipline and its limitations, the danger of looking for shortcuts in your musical development, how to practice organically, methods for developing your musical intuition and concept, why hating your playing might actually be a sign of conceptual growth, why he started a Nonet and how he learned to write for large ensemble, and much more.Support the Podcast: https://berniesbootlegs.com/supportConnect with Lucas:Website: https://www.lucaspino.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lucasrobertopino/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LucasPinoMusic/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvgjdToQPV7FMqKM5eT9qQwConnect with Bernie's Bootlegs:Website: http://berniesbootlegs.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/berniesbootlegsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/berniesbootlegsTwitter: https://twitter.com/berniesbootlegsYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/berniesbootlegs1Email: berniesbootlegs@gmail.comSupport the show (http://berniesbootlegs.com/support)

Originally from Tarpon Springs, Florida, LoRe has been mentored by a “who’s who” of saxophonists, including Lee Konitz, George Garzone, Jerry Bergonzi, James Moody, and Steve Wilson to name a few. Internationally acclaimed saxophonist and educator Bunky Green says LoRe “…will emerge to become one of the leading voices on the international jazz scene.” Saxophonist George Garzone describes his playing as “bold and unforgiving”, with “…a beautiful sound; he understands the concept of melody.” With a strong upbringing in classical music, LoRe’s playing and compositions are influenced by many genres, ranging from European classical music through today’s most influential artists on both the jazz and popular music scenes.LoRe has been featured at venues such as New York City’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMa), the Jazz at Ravinia Festival held at the Stean’s Institute for Young Artists in Chicago, the Monterey Jazz Festival in California, and the Jacksonville and Clearwater Jazz Festivals in Florida, among others. In New York, he frequents prominent venues such as Smalls Jazz Club, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, The Jazz Gallery, and Smoke Jazz Club both as a leader of his own groups and as a sideman. He is a member of saxophonist Lucas Pino’s “No Net” Nonet, which currently holds a residency at Smalls Jazz Club. In addition to being an active performer, Nick is a professor at University of North Texas, and is also the CEO of the record label Outside in Music. We discuss his upbringing in Rochester New York, the most important things he has his students focus on, what it’s like managing a record label, and a lot more. An award-winning composer, arranger, producer, educator and trombonist, Finzer is bringing the joy and power of Jazz to traditional fans and the most modern 21st century audiences. He’s on a mission to be a passionate voice defining the sound of Jazz in this age while also bringing street cred to the trombone with a bold, tight sound. Born into the musical world (Mom Sherry Finzer is an international flutist), Finzer developed a fascination for the music of Duke Ellington and found himself, in high school, performing at the annual Essentially Ellington competition of Jazz at Lincoln Center. It was then that he decided to pursue a life in music himself. His budding talent was recognized by Wycliffe Gordon who began a mentorship by writing four pieces for the young Finzer while he attended the Eastman School of Music. Nick went on to get his masters at Juilliard’s prestigious Jazz program where he was mentored by trombone legend Steve Turre. In 2011 Nick was the winner of the Eastern Trombone Workshop’s National Jazz Trombone Competition and was a finalist in the 2010 International Trombone Association’s Carl Fontana Jazz Trombone Competition. Two tracks appearing on Nick’s debut album “Exposition” (Outside in Music) garnered Finzer a pair of accolades: The prestigious American Society of Composers and Performers (ASCAP)’s Herb Alpert Award for young composers (2013 & 2015)Famed trombonist and mentor Wycliffe Gordon called Finzer “a new voice [in] the pantheon of upcoming trombone greats in the making” and added “Nick's CD is a glowing example of things to come.” When away from NYC, Finzer can be found touring the globe not only with his own projects, but as part of Anat Cohen’s Tentet, teaching workshops and masterclasses, and appearing with YouTube sensation Postmodern Jukebox. Finzer has joined the group on television, in viral videos with millions of views, and on tours across North America, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. Finzer has performed at top jazz clubs, festivals and concert halls with Wynton Marsalis’ Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, the Newport Jazz Festival with Anat Cohen, Lucas Pino’s No Net Nonet, Ryan Truesdell's Gil Evans Project, the Grammy Award Winning Dafnis Prieto Big Band, Bob Stewart’s Double Quartet, Frank Wess, Terrell StaSupport the show (http://berniesbootlegs.com/support)
In this special “wait, he’s not interviewing a jazz musician” episode, VJC Q&T podcast host Russell Schmidt took the show in a different direction. With a goal of exploring creativity in various fields, and expanding beyond the realm of jazz, he invited comedian Genevieve Rice (https://genevieverice.com/) to share questions and tangents with him. There is certainly much common ground between jazz and comedy: performance aspects, creative development of source material, rhythm and pacing, even improvisation. The wide-ranging discussions in this episode included how a one-time, open mic opportunity grew into a stand-up career for Genevieve, whether or not the writing of a particular joke is ever truly finished, and the impact motherhood has had on her comedy. In this special Jazz Educators Panel episode, focusing on subjects of specific interest to music teachers and their students, VJC Q&T podcast host Russell Schmidt shared questions and tangents with artist-teachers Tito Carrillo (Associate Professor of Jazz Trumpet at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) and Paul Ferguson (Director of Jazz Studies at Case Western Reserve University).Shortly after the 2019 Highland/ASU Jazz Festival (at which Tito served as an adjudicator, clinician, and performer), they got together to discuss preferred pedagogical approaches and examine trends and tendencies found with their current students. Among the topics considered: the differences between a practice mindset and a performance mindset, the educational benefits of free improvisation, and even the value of a more tactile learning experience.Learn more about Tito Carrillo here: https://music.illinois.edu/faculty/tito-carrilloLearn more about Paul Ferguson here: http://paulfergusonmusic.com/Learn more about some of the artists mentioned in the podcast here:Count Basie – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Count_BasieWayne Bergeron – https://www.waynebergeron.com/Bob Brookmeyer – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_BrookmeyerMiles Davis – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miles_DavisSammy Davis, Jr. – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sammy_Davis_JrDuke Ellington – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke_EllingtonQuincy Jones – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quincy_JonesThad Jones – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thad_JonesJoe Lovano – http://www.joelovano.com/Wynton Marsalis – https://wyntonmarsalis.org/Sammy Nestico – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sammy_NesticoBuddy Rich – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddy_RichMaria Schneider – https://www.mariaschneider.com/Wayne Shorter – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayne_ShorterHorace Silver – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horace_SilverThanks for listening!PLEASE SUBSCRIBE & RATE THIS EPISODE!Website:https://www.valleyjazz.org/Social Media (Facebook):https://www.facebook.com/ValleyJazzCooperative/About The Host:Pianist/composer/educator Russell Schmidt has performed with such celebrated artists as Carl Allen, Michael Brecker, Eddie Daniels, Joe Lovano, Gerry Mulligan, Lucas Pino, Arturo Sandoval, and Clark Terry. VJC Q&T podcast host Russell Schmidt has known pianist/organist/composer Michael Kocour for more than a dozen years. A nationally-renown educator, Mike is the Director of Jazz Studies at Arizona State University. Additionally, he is a recording artist for Origin Records, releasing a solo piano album, East of the Sun, on that label’s OA2 imprint earlier this year. In early summer, Mike sat down with Russ to partake in spirited, engaging discussions on jazz, music education, and the nature of creativity. In this second of two podcasts together, they discussed the sometimes-random nature in discovering one’s passions and influences, the deeper truths revealed on vinyl records, and even the lengthy path to be travelled just to join a school’s “stage band”. VJC Q&T podcast host Russell Schmidt (Director, Valley Jazz Cooperative) has known jazz composer/arranger/educator/trombonist Paul Ferguson for 35 years and has recorded with him off and on for the past two decades. Paul is the Director of Jazz Studies at Case Western Reserve University. He is also the Artistic Director of the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, one of the leading professional big bands in the Midwest. Paul is a nationally-renown writer for large and small jazz ensembles, and is a former recipient of the Gil Evans Fellowship in Jazz Composition. In the midst of performing a series of concerts together in Arizona in mid-April 2019, Paul sat down with Russ to record a Questions and Tangents podcast. (Paul also recorded a second podcast, joined by trumpeter Tito Carrillo, which will be released at a later date.)
