We dive into the wild, unpredictable jungle that is Malaysian politics, where East Malaysia (yep, Sabah and Sarawak) holds way more weight than most people realize. It's not just about policies anymore — it's a chaotic mix of big egos, big money, and fragmented voices pulling in every direction. From the sway of the Malay vote to the structural mess nobody wants to fix, we unpack why political "stability" feels more like a myth.  Spoiler: real change might just come from the youth finally getting tired of the same old political drama.   Chapters 00:00 - The Political Landscape of East Malaysia 02:52 - The Fragmentation of Political Voices 06:06 - The Role of Personalities and Money in Sabah Politics 08:50 - The Future of Sabah Elections 12:04 - The Importance of the Malay Vote 14:56 - The Challenges of Political Stability 18:08 - The Structure of Malaysian Politics 20:52 - The Influence of East Malaysia on National Politics 24:05 - The Role of Young People in Politics 27:01 - The Future of Malaysia's Political Landscape   --- FOLLOW PROFESSOR JAMES CHIN HERE:  Sunway Uni: https://sunwayuniversity.edu.my/jci/staff-profiles/professor-james-chin  Tasmania Uni: https://discover.utas.edu.au/James.Chin   X; https://twitter.com/jameschin110  YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@jameschin2641  --- Follow Chuang here:  URL: http://www.domore.my/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/hsu-chuang-khoo-ab199343/ FB: https://www.facebook.com/khoo.chuang/ IG: https://www.instagram.com/khoohsuchuang/ --- Follow DoMore here:  WEBSITE: https://www.domore.my/ YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/c/DoMoreTakeChargeofYourLife ITUNES: https://apple.co/2lQ47mS GOOGLE PLAY: https://bit.ly/3b1l8iO SPOTIFY: https://tinyurl.com/y6zufvcp PODBEAN: https://domoreasia.podbean.com/ INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/domore.asia/

When talking about Bible translation around the world, you may have the picture of a tribe or people group receiving Bibles. Still, there are many people groups where hearing the Word in their heart language is most effective. On Friday’s show, we will highlight a ministry that translates and shares God’s audible Word. Morgan Jackson, Senior Vice President of Faith Comes by Hearing, talks about the thousands of indigenous tribal members in East Malaysia who are the 2,000th language to receive a Scripture recording. You’ll also learn about Vision 33, an effort to record and freely provide the Word of God in every language by the year 2033, and how you can help bring God’s Word to every person.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We're closing off February this week, cue another roundup of top conservation news with the co-founders of environmental journalism portal Macaranga, Law Yao Hua and Wong Siew Lyn. 2023 was the planet's warmest year on record, and just last Saturday, Met Malaysia issued a Level 1 Heat Wave Warning. Scientists have underlined the need for urgent action, but it has also led coral ecologists to warn about coral bleaching and even add new alert levels to track potential risks to coral reefs. We discuss this first, before turning our attention to the recently convened 2nd meeting of the Ad Hoc Joint Task Force (JTF) on the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), and discussions around the smooth implementation and understanding of the EUDR here in Malaysia and Indonesia. Finally, we look to East Malaysia, where Sarawak has nearly doubled the population of its crocodiles, but this has also led to increased human-crocodile conflicts - we discuss the implications of this conservation success and more. Next, we discuss how the Court of Appeal has dismissed the appeal of two NGOs, PEKA and SACF, to initiate judicial review proceedings to challenge the degazettement of Bukit Cherakah as a forest reserve. Finally we head to East Malaysia, where the Sarawak state government is proceeding with plans to construct three more hydroelectric dams, despite several objections and concerns by locals living in and around the areas that will be affected. This time the focus will be on Foundation and Intermediate topics including callsign and exam changes, as well as the Consultation clauses that might lead to new opportunities for outreach activities for everyone. The Consultation also affects anyone who isn't currently licensed but is thinking about taking their exams in the next couple of years. After a short introduction, a panel of RSGB experts will answer your questions on this important Ofcom Consultation. For this event, you can submit a question in advance by 6pm today, Sunday the 6th of August. Send a brief question with your name and callsign to comms@rsgb.org.uk You can also ask a question on the night via the live chat. This is an important event – do join it live on Monday via the RSGB YouTube channel. To find out more about the Consultation and this event go to the RSGB website at rsgb.org/licencereview You can watch a recording of the first Tonight@8 event on the Ofcom Consultation via the RSGB's YouTube channel. The 2023 Youngsters on the Air, or YOTA, summer camp in Hungary began this weekend and lasts for a week. The four young people representing the RSGB are Alexander Du Rose, 2E0FMZ who is the Team Leader; Henry-James Robinson, M7HJR; Hannah Lee, M7YYQ; and Jake Saul, M7JNS. Each day, they will be sharing news of the activities they enjoy and the amateur radio skills they learn. Take a look at their updates over the coming week on the RSGB website at rsgb.org/yota-hungary and read their fuller report in the October issue of RadCom. As part of the RSGB's commitment to encourage youngsters into amateur radio and to support lifelong learning, the Society is providing resources and creating coding activities for people to get involved in throughout the month of September 2023. From the BBC Micro:bit to Node-RED and GNU Radio, there are some great activities you could try yourself with your club or arrange at a local school or community group. If you are an experienced coder, the Society would like you to support this initiative by passing on your enthusiasm to a local school or STEM club with the help of the suggested activities. If you are new to coding and have no idea what Python is or a Raspberry Pi, then the activities will set you on the path of discovery! Find out more on the RSGB website at rsgb.org/coding. If you would like to get involved, contact ESRG member John Hislop, G7OHO via g7oho@rsgb.org.uk The RSGB has responded to an Ofcom consultation on licensing Enhanced Long-Range Navigation, or eLoran, systems. This would use a new network of 400kW EIRP transmissions at around 90 to 110kHz to provide an alternative to GPS for Position, Navigation and Timing, or PNT. The response, which can be found on the RSGB's Spectrum Forum webpages, focussed on the high levels of out-of-band emissions that would affect the weak signal 136kHz amateur allocation, as well as transparency on transmitter licensing. The consultation response can be viewed by visiting thersgb.org/go/sfpapers The ARRL, the national association for amateur radio in the USA, has filed comments against a proposal that would introduce high-power digital communications to the shortwave spectrum that, in many instances, is immediately adjacent to the amateur HF bands. Using all modes on the 6m band, the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator.   Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Thursday the 3rd of August 2023 The Sun continued to be very active over the last week with a large number of sunspots, numerous C- and M-class flares, and a coronal mass ejection or two. A coronal mass ejection is predicted to hit Earth this weekend, which could see the Kp index rise, but this is not expected to be too extensive. Active region 3380 expanded in both size and magnetic complexity, firing off numerous solar flares. Luckily it is now rotating out of view so is no longer a threat. The Solar Flux Index remained above 170 all week with a sunspot number of 135 on Thursday. Don't forget that this doesn't mean there were 135 sunspots, as each group counts ten towards the total. Three sunspots in three groups equals thirty plus three, or thirty-three. Geomagnetic conditions were mixed with one period giving a Kp index of four, and many when it was over three. The main DX being chased this week wasn't actually too far away. The 1A0C station at the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, which confusingly is actually in Rome, gave amateurs plenty of opportunity to add to their band slot totals. The station was raising money for humanitarian charitable projects and was easy to work from the UK.  Next week NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Centre thinks the Solar Flux Index will remain in the 165 to 170 region. The Kp index shouldn't rise above three, although that rather depends on whether we have any coronal mass ejections. There are also signs that we are starting to leave the Summer HF doldrums. MUFs over a 3,000km path have occasionally gone over 28MHz at times. But we are still a long way from Autumn HF conditions, despite the weather!   And now the VHF and up propagation news The unsettled weather is here for a little longer, but there may be an end in sight as we move through the second half of next week.  To begin, there will be areas of low pressure in control bringing rain or showers and more rain scatter on the GHz bands. Midweek, the high edges in from the west and remains close to the southeast into the next weekend, but lows and weather fronts will probably return to the western areas by the end of the week. Nonetheless, this should be a period of Tropo for many areas, if only temporarily for western areas. Meteor scatter could be good with a steady advance towards the peak of the Perseids on the 12th and 13th of August. It might even be warm enough to stand outside in the southeast and listen to the pings while watching the evening sky for meteor trails! Aurora can't be discounted either should the Kp index show higher values than, say, 5 and there have been a number of auroral contacts reported by Nordic stations over the last week. In August there is still some Sporadic-E to be had as luckily the jet stream pattern is still quite busy giving ample triggers for Sporadic-E due to the turbulence they create. As often mentioned, a good time to check, if you are a busy person, is around teatime or late afternoon. Moon declination goes positive on Saturday so Moon visibility windows will lengthen throughout the week. We are past perigee so path losses are rising again. 144MHz sky noise is low but rising, reaching moderate levels next weekend. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

This was probably the most significant geomagnetic event we have had so far in this solar cycle. Last week saw another X1.2 solar flare erupt on the Sun. This one erupted from active region 3256 on the 29th of March at 0233UTC. It didn't impact the ionosphere over the UK, but a fadeout was observed over the Pacific region. This was the seventh major solar flare since 2023 began. The Sun has now matched 2022's total –and it's only March! The associated CME off the southwestern limb of the Sun was modelled and determined to be well ahead of the Earth's orbit. This means that we are unlikely to see the Kp index rise as a result of this event. This region also produced an M1.2 flare that peaked around 1407UTC and an M1.1 flare at 2347UTC. The earlier flare didn't seem to affect the ionosphere too much according to the ionosonde data. A minor solar wind stream is heading for Earth and is due on Saturday the 1st of April. The material is flowing from a relatively small coronal hole in the Sun's atmosphere, but it is on the equator and very Earth-centric. Expect Arctic auroras and an elevated Kp index when the solar wind arrives this weekend. The SFI remained fairly static, around 160, earlier in the week but then declined to 148 on Thursday the 30th. NOAA predicts that this decline will continue next week, perhaps down to the low 130s. Once the weekend's geomagnetic conditions recover, NOAA predicts that the rest of the week should be quite settled. This is good news for HF propagation, although do continue to watch out for solar flares and CME activity which could affect conditions and MUFs. And now the VHF and up propagation news We have three phases of weather to consider over the next week. Forecasts predicted an unsettled weekend with rain and strong winds, so should have provided a focus for rain scatter on the GHz bands. The weekend ends with developing high pressure which lasts into early next week. There is good potential for some tropo from Sunday afternoon until about Tuesday lunchtime. At the time of writing, the best paths are likely to be from southern England into the near continent, also via Biscay to northern Spain and across the southern North Sea to Denmark. The third phase occurs when the high moves to the south to allow fronts to move in from the Atlantic across northern Britain, but possibly still leaving tropo into France and across Biscay. Later in the week, the high pressure may head back north again to reintroduce tropo to northern areas. The Sporadic-E season is fast approaching, typically from mid-April on 10m. If anything does happen before then, check the propquest.co.uk website for the Es blog tab, which shows the current day's jet streams and will maybe provide a clue for which direction to beam. Remember to look for aurora if the Kp index reaches five or more and, of course, meteor scatter around dawn for those random meteor QSOs.  For EME operators, Moon declination is positive until Wednesday, so still plenty of Moon time to get some QSOs in. Perigee was last Thursday, so path losses are now falling. 144MHz sky noise is low, rising slowly throughout the week. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

Rice is a staple of Malaysians' diet, and for years and decades, Malaysia has prided itself on our paddy industry. However, when we think of paddy fields, we often think of the states across Peninsula Malaysia such as Kedah and Perak in the north, and Kelantan and Terengganu on the East coast. What we don't talk about as much is the paddy industry in Sabah and Sarawak, over in East Malaysia, which is vastly different from what we see here in Peninsula Malaysia. We speak to Dr Sarena Che Omar, deputy director of research with Khazanah Research Institute, on how we can cultivate the specialty rice industry.Image Credit: Shutterstock

Tambunan Statement, February 1995. Indigenous people of Asia met at Tambunan, Sabah, East Malaysia, to assert rights of self-determination, and to express concern about, and fear of, the threat unfamiliar 'western' intellectual property rights systems may pose to them. It was agreed, in the Tambunan Statement on the Protection and Conservation of Indigenous Knowledge: For the Indigenous peoples of Asia, the intellectual property rights system is not only a very new concept but it is also very western...with intellectual property rights, alien laws will be devised to exploit the Indigenous knowledge and resources of the Indigenous peoples. Suva Statement, April 1995. Participants from the independent countries and "nonautonomous colonized territories" of the Pacific region met in Suva, Fiji, to discuss internationally dominant intellectual property rights regimes, and at that meeting they resolved to support the Kari Oca, Mataatua, Julayinbul, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, and Tambunan initiatives(above). In their statement, the Suva Statement on Indigenous Peoples Knowledge and Intellectual Property Rights, participants: Declare Indigenous peoples are willing to share our knowledge with humanity provided we determine when, where and how it is used: at present the international system does not recognise or respect our past, present and potential contribution... Seek repatriation of Indigenous peoples resources already held in external collections, and seek compensation and royalties from commercial developments resulting from these resources… Strengthen the capacities of Indigenous peoples to maintain their oral traditions, and encourage initiatives by Indigenous peoples to record their knowledge... according to their customary access procedures. Kimberley Declaration, August 2002. Indigenous people from around the world attended an international Indigenous peoples' summit on sustainable development in Khoi-San Territory, Kimberley, South Africa, in August 2002, where they reaffirmed previous declarations and statements, and, among other matters, declared: Our traditional knowledge systems must be respected, promoted and protected; our collective intellectual property rights must be guaranteed and ensured. Our traditional knowledge is not in the public domain; it is collective, cultural and intellectual property protected under our customary law. Unauthorized use and misappropriation of traditional knowledge is theft. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/law-school/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/law-school/support

In this interview, we are focused on Larry's travels visiting dozens of mines around the world and his insights on investing in junior miners for fun and profit.   IN TODAY'S CONVERSATION Larry breaks down the difference between mines in a first-world country like Canada to mines in developing countries like Mongolia, I'm positive this will surprise you! What happens today, compared to mining in the early 80s, and how they can go back and mine the same area over again. And the money-making way that they wanted to mine silver from a bat cave in East Malaysia. The excitement involved taking an elevator down to the 1700 level of a mine, surrounded by rock everywhere you look and the mind-blowing fact that there's only one way back out! How gold is leached out of the rock. I bet you have no idea how it's done, the time it takes and what needs to be done to get ½  gram of gold. Great conversation about some of the more interesting countries in South America and how the government can really make a mess of things purely out of greed and which countries Larry will NEVER invest in.   Larry shares the companies he likes to work with best. Why understanding the culture, the people, the mentality and the work ethic and how everything fits together and plays very strongly into the performance of the mine or the investment itself, and what happens when you don't do your due diligence. I asked Larry to walk me through the process of arriving in a new country, what is he looking for, and what is going to set off alarm bells or make him say ‘okay, this is it, I like it. Larry shares what his sweet spot is when he's looking to invest for himself and his clients. Where does the company need to be for him to give them money and invest for his clients! Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Friday the 29th of April 2022. A week of high solar flux indices brought good openings on the higher bands. With the SFI consistently above 140 all week (at the time of writing) there have been reports of 10-metre openings well into the evening. As Ian Goodier on the 10m UK Net Facebook group reported: “Tonight on 10m you could mistake the band for 20m - East Malaysia in one direction, Mexico in the other.” There were also reports of Australian and New Zealand stations being worked on 10 metres, making this possibly one of the best weeks for 28MHz so far this solar cycle. But there were some spanners in the works too. There were a lot of C-class solar flares and two M-class events this week. Geomagnetic conditions have also been disturbed at times with Wednesday being the worst day with the Kp index hitting five twice on one day. Solarham.net said this was an unexpected geomagnetic storm as the Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) tipped south. Another solar storm is forecast for the 29th of April, thanks to a large coronal hole on the Sun's equator. NOAA predicts more of the same next week with the SFI probably above 130. Geomagnetic conditions are predicted to be quiet next week, with an average Kp index of two. That is, at least until the 7th of May when it could rise to four. However, this presupposes that we don't have any coronal mass ejections to contend with. At this point in the solar cycle, solar flares and associated CMEs are commonplace and could push the Kp index higher roughly 48 hours after any Earth-directed CME. As always, keep an eye on Solarham.net for daily updates. And finally, we can now expect a big upturn in Sporadic-E openings on the higher HF bands. Keep an eye on the European 10m beacons for openings and find out more in our VHF news. And now the VHF and up propagation news. As we move into May, the chances of Sporadic-E begin to increase and it's worth keeping a close eye on the usual bands from 10m up to 6m, later in the month, the 2m band might surprise us. The Propquest.co.uk website contains a useful EPI map plot of regions where Sporadic-E may be more likely based upon weather triggers of atmospheric gravity waves that are part of the formation process. It also contains a daily blog with commentary to highlight significant jet streams and other regions of interest. The main focus on the weather charts starts with high pressure bringing fairly good Tropo conditions at the end of last week. Over this weekend a small low will drift into western areas and generally disrupt the Tropo propagation, producing a weaker pattern for next week with a hint of isolated showers. Later in the week, some models bring another low southeast from Iceland to Denmark introducing a cooler north-westerly flow with a few showers until a new high builds next weekend. The result of this will be possible Tropo windows later towards next weekend. There is a possibility of a little rain scatter in between, but generally limited. The Eta Aquariid meteor shower will peak between midnight and dawn on Friday the 6th of May 2022. Its ZHR is a very respectable 50. The shower favours the Southern Hemisphere and the radiant is low in the sky for the UK in the early pre-dawn hours. The predictable cycle of Moon-bounce propagation continues this week with positive Moon declination peaking on Thursday, now almost coinciding with apogee and therefore highest path losses. After mid-July, the trend of rising declination and rising path loss reverses, until, in mid-2026 maximum declination coincides with perigee and minimum path loss again. 144MHz sky noise is generally low this week, reaching 500K on Wednesday. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

How can we help people with dementia? Kim Chakanetsa talks to two women from Singapore and the UK about how they've adapted to living with the condition and why they now want to help others understand dementia better. Wendy Mitchell was diagnosed with young onset dementia at the age of 58. She wrote a bestselling memoir, Somebody I Used to Know about the slow realisation that she was changing, and the adaptations she needed to make to her life to cope. She's a vocal advocate for people with Alzheimer's and other dementia and promotes better understanding and care. Surprised by the lack of information available to her and her family, she's written a second book, What I Wish People Knew About Dementia. Emily Ong is from East Malaysia but now lives in Singapore. She first noticed something was wrong when she forgot how to make French toast, but it took her years to get a proper diagnosis for young onset dementia. Now 54 years old, she advocates for greater understanding of the disease and belongs to the Voices for Hope programme, helping people who are newly diagnosed or already have dementia. She says it's rare for Asians to speak about dementia and it's important to be open and spread understanding. Produced by Jane Thurlow (Image: (L) Wendy Mitchell, credit Jo Hanley. Malaysia Recap Of Latest Kuala Lumpur And Penang Visit

Far East Travels Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 9, 2019 24:09

I do enjoy my visits to Malaysia as always. I've spent lots of time in Kuala Lumpur visiting all of the important sites and enjoying some of Southeast Asia's best food. This trip was no exception. KL is for the most part one of the easier cities to get around with a MRT/LRT train system that for the most part serves all the areas a tourist or visitor would need. There are exceptions but gone are the days of getting frustrated trying to find a taxi driver that refuses to use their meter-Grab has solved that issue. One thing I've noticed in recent years are the abundant choices of Middle Eastern food, particularily in the Bukit Bintang shopping district. I visited Daab, a Persian restaurant and enjoyed a wonderful fish kebob dinner as I watched the downpour of an average evening during the rainy season. This was my first visit to Penang an the Unesco World Heritage city of George Town. I've visited many cities across Southeast Asia with their own old street or neighborhood, made up of old shop houses but I've never seen as many in one place as in George Town. In fact, George Town has the most pre-WWII buidlings in all of Southeast Asia. It truly is a jewel, the only thing missing is everyday life. It appears to be more a living museum then a place for normal life in Malaysia, hence the importance of the beautiful street art by Earnest Zacharevic. A reminder of what life was one like on these historic and remarkable streets. Of course Penang more than ever is known as a food destination and the street food capital of Malaysia. High quality street food and hawker centers/coffee shops are everywhere. If you're a Westerner all of it is easily accessible with a population that is mostly fluent in English it's very easy to ask about the food that's being served and to request if say you'd prefer not to have chicken, pork, or seafood/fish in your order. Although I found there weren't as many adventure day trips available as there are in East Malaysia, (Borneo), there are some interesting hikes, and other spots to visit on the island. You would probably need to book a tour or rent your own transporation should you want to get out of the George Town area to explore Penang Island further. Thanks so much for listening. Join me for travel chat and discussion walking through the historic and Unesco World Heritage designated Georgetown, in Penang, Malaysia. I've spent lots of time in Kuala Lumpur and East Malaysia, (Borneo), but for some reason I've put off visiting Penang, now wondering what was I thinking. This is a wonderful town to explore and enjoy architecture and more pre-WWII houses than anywhere else in Southeast Asia. Along with a diverse community mostly made up of ethnic Chinese, Malay, and Tamil Indians. Of course the food reflects that which makes it one of the most popular food destinations in the region as well. Penang receives many visitors from China and Taiwan as the majority of the population speaks Mandarin or Hokkien they aren't hindered at all by a language barrier. Geogetown, being a former British colony has also it's share of an expat community but these days with places like Thailand and Vietnam becoming more popular I'm not sure if it's still the draw as it once was for Westerners. You'll be very comfortable though if you visit here, with a population that speaks English and a comfortable atmosphere and for the most part courteous drivers that respect pedestrians. The food I've sampled so far has been outstanding and surprisingly given that Penang has one of the highest per capita income levels in Malaysia still very reasonable with street food dishes averaging $1.20-$1.50! Paradise! Thanks so much for listening and watch out for more episodes from George Town, Malaysia!Help support the podcast by becoming a patron! This season, I'd like to start thinking about travel in a new way.Time and place, Maties. Because I think there's something profound and universal about a good travel story, connecting us more deeply to a unique place at a specific time, to ourselves, and to the other people we meet along the way. At the end of this episode, I'll recall a tribal tale from the outback of Northeast Borneo in East Malaysia.... where you'll hear how Rungus tribesmen dealt with love, jealousy, and revenge back in the days of animism and black magic shamans. http://erictrules.com/episode24

In December, 2001, just months after 9/11, Trules arrives in Kota Kinabalu on the island of Borneo in East Malaysia. Teaching at an all-Islamic university on a Fulbright grant, he is confronted with images of Osama Bin Laden - on the screensavers of his university colleagues - and on t-shirts in every shopping mall. Talk about culture shock, he learns that Bin Laden is the most admired man in Malaysia for being the only man to stand up to George W. Bush and Goliath America. Still, Trules tries to make peace with the natives.  http://erictrules.com/episode11
