In the early twentieth century, Miami cultivated an image of itself as a destination for leisure and sunshine free from labor strife. In Working in the Magic City: Moral Economy in Early Twentieth-Century Miami (U Illinois Press, 2022), Thomas A. Castillo unpacks this idea of class harmony and the language that articulated its presence by delving into the conflicts, repression, and progressive grassroots politics of the time. Castillo pays particular attention to how class and race relations reflected and reinforced the nature of power in Miami. Class harmony argued against the existence of labor conflict, but in reality obscured how workers struggled within the city's service-oriented seasonal economy. Castillo shows how and why such an ideal thrived in Miami's atmosphere of growth and boosterism and amidst the political economy of tourism. His analysis also presents class harmony as a theoretical framework that broadens our definitions of class conflict and class consciousness. Jeff Rorhs was hooked on 97X from the very first song he heard on the station. In fact, he attended Miami University mostly because of 97X, and he was so determined to work at the station that he played polka music at his hometown radio station just to get on-air experience. All that polka-playing paid off - he wound up working weekends and fill-in shifts at 97X for his entire college career, from 1987 through 1991. In this episode, we talk to Jeff about that first song he heard, how he scored the weekend gig, his unfortunate mispronunciation of an artist's name, how he pissed off Doug Balogh, the longest song in the 97X library, the bands he championed both at 97X and on his music video show at Miami U., his MTV regrets, and the Violent Femmes concert at Bogart's when it started raining on the stage.

Diagnosed with ADHD as a child, Christian has learned to navigate both a personal and professional life, as well as cope with tragedy in his personal life. More recently, he was also diagnosed with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and his father passed away at age 64. He couldn't enjoy his early 20s like most other young adults and found himself having to get organized and grow up really quickly just as he was about to finish college. His plans for grad school and his life were even put on hold for a while. From dealing with a parent with an addiction to the loss of a parent to suicide while he was in college, Christian has developed a new perspective about life, resiliency, and self-discovery. Now, he currently works in higher education where he recruits for Miami University and deals directly with respective college students, counselors, and faculty every semester. He's also just graduated from grad school and has a home and a 4-year-old girl with his fiancée. Listen as Christian shares his experiences as a child with ADHD and the effect of his dad's leukemia and addiction and his mother's depression in his life from elementary school through college. He also reveals the difficulty he faced in trying to complete his education during some traumatic events involving his parents, discusses handling the aftermath of his mother's death, and talks about how he continues to process what has happened in his life. You'll learn: [02:47] Welcome to the show, Christian! [04:50] How did Adderall and Strattera affect Christian? [06:54] A leukemia diagnosis for his dad in 1995 triggered the start of Christian's hectic life. [09:02] Christian's dad traded in his family for his addiction. [10:24] Christian discusses the beginning point of his mother's depression. [12:24] After a period of rehabilitation, Christian's dad moved back in with his son and ex-wife. [14:40] Why has Christian always preferred writing in cursive over print? [16:07] Miami U delivered a letter to Christian that kicked things into high gear. [24:31] For a few years, Christian was living two lives as a college student and a caretaker. [25:47] Christian discusses his OCD as a trauma response. [27:01] What was it about teaching middle schoolers that turned Christian off? [28:47] On the morning of April 10, 2015, Christian got some bad news from his dad. [31:17] Christian became the executor of his mom's estate at age 22. [33:05] What kind of strategies helped Christian get organized? [38:23] ADHD is never just on an island by itself. It's part of the greater picture of life. [39:55] Christian's already done so much at age 29, and he's often told he has an old soul. [42:01] How does Christian continue to process the events of his life? [44:32] Christian has felt obligated to take care of others, but how does he take care of himself? [46:05] If you've recently found out you have ADHD or are struggling with it, Christian offers this advice. [48:38] Christian has this thing about not starting anything unless he knows he'll win or be successful beforehand. [50:27] How did his own upbringing shape Christian as a dad now? The Lovely & Talented Elizabeth Cannon started working at Riverbend as an usher when she was 16... and wound up staying there for nearly 15 years. For most of her tenure, she managed Riverbend's marketing, working closely with local radio and TV stations and record labels on media buys, ad scripts, promotions (ticket giveaways, meet-and-greets), artist interviews, and more. As a 97X listener in high school and a Miami U. grad, she always had a special place in her heart for the tiny modern rock station in Oxford... and the feeling was mutual. Elizabeth fills us in on her behind-the-scenes work at Riverbend... including why a mullet man was making a sick kid's heart achy-breaky, and who was cool and who was a tool in CS&N (and sometimes Y).

Though his playing career wasn't as good as Dad, his crime career is certainly as prolific as anyone in sports history. Let's just say that he liked to "show off", but that isn't all... He also commits some of the most horrific crimes we've ever covered. This one is a bit gross!   Follow your father's lead into the NFL, have your teammates grossed out by your constant pornography watching, and be lucky that you're not going to prison for life with Kellen Winslow Jr!!   Check us out, every Tuesday!   We will continue to bring you the biggest idiots in sports history!!    Hosted by James Pietragallo & Jimmie Whisman    Donate at... patreon.com/crimeinsports or with paypal.com using our email: crimeinsports@gmail.com    Get all the CIS & STM merch at crimeinsports.threadless.com    Go to shutupandgivememurder.com for all things CIS & STM!!    Contact us on... twitter.com/crimeinsports  crimeinsports@gmail.com  facebook.com/Crimeinsports  instagram.com/smalltownmurder# See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Christopher Coake is the author of the novel You Came Back and the story collection We're in Trouble winner of the PEN/Robert Bingham Fellowship. His new collection, You Would Have Told Me Not To, RELEASED TODAY by Delphinium. In 2007 he was named one of Granta's Best Young American Novelists. His short fiction has been anthologized in collections such as Best American Mystery Stories 2004; The Best American Noir of the Century; and Gutted: Beautiful Horror Stories; and in numerous literary journals. Coake received his MFA in fiction from the Ohio State U and an MA in fiction from Miami U of Ohio. He is an Associate Professor of English at the U of Nevada, Reno. He directs the MFA program in creative writing there where he lives with his wife, Stephanie Lauer, and their two dogs.  ABOUT THE BOOK - YOU WOULD HAVE TOLD ME NOT TO These stories arrive amid the #Metoo movement. They examine the fallout from failed relationships between men and women, relationships that have crumbled under the weight of betrayal, misplaced hopes, illness and from masculinity at its most toxic and misguided. These fictions ask very contemporary questions: how do ex-spouses learn to live again in proximity to one another; how do we make peace with our bodies and their own worst impulses; how do we learn to turn and face, full-on, the worst mistakes of our younger selves?

How ironic that I attended a writing conference, which stressed regular writing time, in Cleveland on Monday and haven't found space to blog all week. And, last post, I wrote about craving routine and its value. I haven't found it this week. Not with work, life or spirituality. I've been running and crashing, running and crashing. Typically, I plan for more balance; time off after projects, traveling and late nights. I never was one who could burn the candle at both ends – my body simply won't let me.It's all been deep, rich work, but at such a fevered pace and not of my creation.Bookends: from glitzy hotel to packing my studioMonday was a killer conference packed full of marketing know-how for authors. Exactly what I had hoped it would be. I drove up Sunday afternoon and spent the evening and overnight with a wonderful friend from freshman year at Miami U. I loved getting to know her in her house and with her likable spouse. Her girls are away at college. I even got to visit her 85-year-old mother whom I hadn't seen in 30 years. She had home-baked cookies and tea prepared.I dashed out of the house at 6:40 a.m. to make the 7 a.m. conference registration. Scored super-cheap, convenient parking thanks to online trolling and arrived. All of the speakers are published authors who sung the praises of treating your work as an entrepreneur not an artist when it comes time to market. Authorpreneur, they called it. One women, over a quick lunch lecture, asked whether you'd put your work on a pedestal inside of velvet ropes or next to a stack of sneaker at a garage sale. That image really drove home the point for me. I was encouraged and hungry for information. I loved that an Amazon best-selling author said his work was awful at first, even sharing nasty reviews. He was so humble and encouraging of what really can happen all at the same time.I had another offer to stay in Cleveland and drive home in the morning, but my head was swimming, I relished the quiet four-hour drive home and was eager to be in Cincinnati. The next evening, I was scheduled to present my non-profit elevator speech on stage to potential new board members. The speech went very well even though the spotlights were overwhelming. Maybe it helped that I couldn't see the audience. Good practice for this introvert, at any rate.I've been gathering, planning and organizing all week for the annual community art day and registration for Artsy Fartsy Saturdays, held at the complex we serve. A lotta work, yet a lotta fun.Serving poorest of the poor on the heals of listening to marketing gurus are interesting bookends #salonforthesoulServing the poorest of the poor on the heals of listening to marketing gurus are interesting bookends to the week. Sprinkle in a mini reunion, being center stage at an edgy theater, the subject of a ministry care committee, making a personal grant request and re-initiating art Sunday in the inner city and I think I may take at least Monday off to rebalance.• What's my usual balance of work, play, family and spirituality?• How do I handle it when I become off-kilter?• How easily do I let my spiritual life fall to the wayside?• Where or how do I feel God in these moments?• How do I take time to see where God is in all of this messy life?knowing it wouldbe inspiration, informationaland what I hungerfor,I took the plungealthough itcomplicatedthe rest of theweekthat just gotbusier and busierthings happeningthat I just couldn'tsay no totrying to findmy way throughand not forgetwho put mehereListen to this post:

Kickstarter Link!http://kck.st/3IloYFLPURPOSE: We are putting this together for a planned scientific expedition to the Trinity Alps to help prove the existence of the hidden giant salamander species that calls the mountains home.SPECEMIN: The Trinity Alps Giant Salamander is cryptid giant salamander that is rumored to live in the mountain ranges of northern California, specifically the Trinity Alps. This giant has been seen in the area since at least the early 1900's all the way up to modern day with some of the more famous encounters being the Frank L Griffith sighting which included 5 of the amphibians all ranging from 5 to 7 feet in length, which would put them at a comparable size of Japanese Giant Salamanders. Also, the Vern Harden sighting which claimed to see large amounts of 4–5-foot salamanders in Hubbard Lake. During the early sightings, the area in which these creatures inhabited was vastly remote, but nowadays it is butting up to the edge of civilization with new construction projects, like resorts and dams on the edge of what is believed to be their remaining range. We believe that this creature still exists today but may very well be on the edge of extinction like many other salamanders in the world. Without proving its existence in the near future, it will probably be added to the ranks of manmade extinct species. DATA COLLECTION: How will we prove the existence of these magnificent creatures? By assembling a team of highly qualified aquatic and salamander experts and applying the most modern surveying techniques for other mysterious giant salamanders around the world. (i.e. Hellbenders, Giant Japanese Salamanders) Some of the surveying techniques we will be using, both physical and laboratory survey methods. The physical survey methods include snorkel surveys to help ID salamander dens and actively guide salamanders to nets. Scuba Diving to survey rock crevices and deep water ROV's. The laboratory surveys will be the most crucial for proving the existence of reproductive populations because larval salamanders are some of the hardest to ID on Earth. The survey method we will be using in this will be a DNA sampling of small amounts of live tissue from larval salamanders in the area that have a high probability of being this cryptic species, but due to the mass amounts of other salamander species in the area, it can be nearly impossible to distinguish between different species with just the naked eye. This may be the reason that some other survey teams came away with no definitive results.CREW: Cryptids of the Corn! Professional Podcaster experts at researching cryptid history, sighting locations, speculative biology and tracking down eye-witness testimonies. Also, having specialties in endangered species surveys and DNA collection. Christian: Professional Wildlife Documentarian. Scuba diving expert. Professional Treasure HunterZach Alley: I'm an ichthyologist, graduated from Miami U with a BA in Zoology in 2015 and an MS in Conservation Biology from the University of West Alabama in 2023. Ive worked with aquatic organisms since 2012, and spend alot of my free time documenting aquatic biodiversity via publication quality portrait photographs of fishes and other aquatic life (crayfish, herps, etc) My most recent research has focused on systematics and phylogenetics and characterizing life history traits and co occurrence between Etheostoma parvipinne and Ambystoma salamanders in the black belt Prarie region of Alabama and MississippiDavid Pounders: My name is David Pounders, and I am a biologist. I was born in Panama City, Panama, but grewup in Northwest Alabama. Ever since I was young, I have been obsessed with animals, mainly reptiles and amphibians. Living in Alabama made this easy as it is easily one of the most biodiverse areas, so it wasn't hard to find different species of snakes, turtles, and other scaly critters. I knew I wanted a career in wildlife conservation but instead of working with reptiles and amphibians I now work with fish. My areas of expertise are Ichthyology, Herpetology, andpopulation genetics. I currently work with nongame species of conservation concern using molecular techniques to aid in understanding these creatures. My main focus is on narrowly endemic as understanding the genetic structure of the species is important to inform conservation managers. I still consider myself a field biologist. To this day I lead and assist field crew teams in doing surveys, population assessments, and habitat assessments. I one day plan to use my skills either in an academic setting or for other entities that aid in the conservation of aquatic species.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/cryptids-of-the-corn/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
