Dr. Jen Unwin, PsyD, FBPSs co-founder of Food Addiction Solutions (FAS) Jen is a Clinical Psychologist who worked for over 30 years in the NHS in the UK. She specialised in the role of hope in quality of life and was chair of the UK Association for Solution-Focused Therapy. After a lifetime of addiction to sugar and carbohydrates, she finally understood that the solution was abstinence and trained in Holistic Addiction Medicine with Heidi. They have been working together to devise and evaluate successful treatment approaches to food addiction and to raise awareness of the condition internationally. Jen's best hopes are that treatment will be more available and that the condition of food addiction will be formally recognised. Heidi Giaever, Founder of The Collaborative Health Community, CFK and co-founder of Food Addiction Solutions (FAS) Heidi's original degree was in chemical engineering. She subsequently retrained in Nutrition, Lifestyle Medicine and Hollistic Addicition Medicine (HAM), following her declining cognitive and mental health during her late 30s, found to have been caused by her poor diet and struggle with sweet-foods addiction. Here is a helpful guide we created for you as well! Questions to ask a Food Addiction Professional Before Working with them Education / Training / Certifications: What is their educational background?  Where did they receive their degree/training in counseling/psychology/food addiction/coaching?  How long have they been practicing?  What licenses and certifications do they have? Which professional organizations do they belong to?  Confidentiality:  What is their policy regarding privacy and confidentiality?  Do they adhere to professional ethical standards and keep client information secure?  Professional Standards:  Are they in therapy themselves? How recently? How regularly?  Do they seek peer consultation?  Do they participate in supervision? Treatment Style:  How many clients have they had with similar circumstances to yours?  When was the last time they worked with someone similar to you?  Have them describe their ideal client.  What are their strengths and limitations are as a Food Addiction professional?  What is their general philosophy and approach to helping?  Are they more directive or more guiding?  What does a typical session look like?  How long are the sessions?  What kind of homework/reading do they give their clients?  How do you prepare for your first session?  What therapeutic approach or modalities does the Food Addiction professional utilize?  Are they trained in specific methods: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Somatic Practices or Mindfulness-Based approaches?  How do they tailor their approach to meet your individual needs? Treatment Goals and Progress:  How do they collaborate with their clients to establish treatment goals?  How often do they assess progress?  What strategies do they use to monitor and adjust the treatment plan?  How do they set up counseling goals? What are they like?  Tell them what you define as success for you. Ally Houston is a former physicist who fixed his brain with food. After suffering from ADHD, seasonal depression, chronic anxiety, and a host of other metabolic problems, a paleo ketogenic diet and lifestyle change resulted in a quantum leap in his health. The effect was so profound that he switched career. He is now a metabolic mental health coach trained by PreKure and Dr. Georgia Ede. Molly Painschab and Clarissa Kennedy (and I) asked Ally Houston about how changing his diet changed his life and career. Ally shared his story of how he was quite unwell from a young age and how his physics professor suggested he try a low carb diet. After trying it, Ally experienced a huge transformation in his mental health, gut health, and weight control. This led him to change his career to metabolic mental health coaching, helping people with food and mood, nutritional psychiatry, and depression and anxiety. Ally believes that there is a cultural component to why men are less likely to self-identify as food addicts, and that it is hard for them to admit they have a problem. He believes that if food addiction is recognized in the DSM, it will allow people to embrace it more and be more open about it. He also believes that meeting people where they are is important, and that understanding the mechanism of addiction can help people to make changes. Ally shares his approach to avoiding giving unsolicited advice and talks about his experiments with different diets. Dr. Wilcox, MD is a board-certified psychiatrist and addiction psychiatrist, an associate professor of translational neuroscience at the Mind Research Network and adjunct faculty at the University of New Mexico. She has worked in a variety of clinical settings, including a medical weight loss clinic and an eating disorder treatment facility, and she completed an internal medicine residency before her psychiatry residency. She has been awarded NIH grants and published numerous academic works, some in prestigious academic journals, including a study on the relationship between dopamine function and overeating behavior, and a textbook on food addiction entitled Food Addiction, Obesity and Disorders of Overeating an Evidenced Based Assessment and Clinical Guide with Springer, the latter of which has seen over 5000 downloads since October of 2021.   She has given numerous talks and trainings on the neurobiology of overeating in her career. She identifies herself as a writer, too. She was an associate editor of the New England Journal of Medicine Journal Watch from 2017-2020 and has written numerous educational blog posts and continuing medical education materials on a variety of medical and psychiatric topics including eating disorders, and blogs regularly on Psychology Today. She's written for the Santa Fe Reporter, New Mexico Wilderness Alliance, Your Tango, Science in the News, and the Telluride Watch. She's published some personal essays under a pseudonym in literary magazines too and is revising an as-yet-unpublished novel called Grit. In May of 2022, she attended the Santa Fe Science Writers Workshop and she is a member of the American Medical Writer's Association, the National Association of Science Writers, and the Food Addiction Professionals Network. Emily August is an Associate Professor of Literature at Stockton University. She holds a PhD in English from Vanderbilt University, and an MFA in creative writing from University of Minnesota. As a longtime body liberation proponent, she focuses on the human body in her research and writing. Her scholarly work examines representations of the body in 19th-century literature, art, and scientific discourse. She seeks to understand how a very narrow, specific version of the body became the authoritative medical standard defined as healthy and normative—and how this standard continues to impact clinical practice and societal power relations. In addition to her scholarly work, her forthcoming debut poetry collection, entitled The Punishments Must Be a School, treats themes of intergenerational trauma and intimate partner violence. Since embarking on her recovery journey in 2017, she has passionately advocated to destigmatize abstinence. She practices a body-neutral, body-inclusive approach to abstinence-based food addiction recovery. She divides her time between Lake Superior's North Shore and the Atlantic Ocean's Jersey Shore. Vanessa is a counsellor and psychotherapist registered with the Australian Counselling Association. BIO: Monica Anderson is a 43-year-old working mom of 2 who has spent her career working in the retail industry focusing primarily on product development.  She self describes herself as being gripped by eating disorders and addictive eating habits from adolescence until she had what she can only define as a divine intervention at the age of 42, that started her on her road to recovery.  Monica has spent the last year working intensely on reprogramming her mind and life with the objective of being free from obsession with body weight, shape, and size and to find freedom from harmful eating practices.  Monica has an extremely supportive husband who has encouraged her and pushed her to continue her journey, and she is motivated to do the hard work in the hopes of not passing on her disease to her children.  With determination, faith, extraordinary effort, and the supportive help of Molly Painschab and Clarissa Kennedy, and the Sweet Sobriety Group, she has made tremendous progress in healing her relationship with herself and food.   Monica has the ultimate goal of making a full recovery to live a life of freedom from disordered eating and to find love and acceptance for herself within herself. In today's episode I talk to Molly Painschab, a dual-licensed mental health and addiction counselor. Molly shares her own story of addiction and recovery and talks about how she is helping clients now and bringing more awareness to food addiction. Molly is a certified international food addiction counselor with experience coaching individuals and their family members through recovery management. Her background in addiction treatment while working with individuals being supervised by the Department of Corrections, Child Protective Services, and other Court-Ordered situations inform her solution-focused and forward-thinking style. Molly is fueled by her belief that recovery is possible. She considers herself a ‘helper', eager to encourage and support individuals and families on their journey to mental and emotional wellness. Molly believes the only way to ensure everyone who needs help with food addiction to get the treatment they need, is to unify professionals in the field and push the APA and WHO to place diagnostic criteria in the DSM. Molly is currently working to expand the treatment and support options for individuals and their families who are seeking recovery by increasing online options, uniting international food addiction professionals, and educating anyone who is willing to listen. Molly is currently part of an international research team in the early stages of auditing Food Addiction treatment. She is a co-founder of the Food Addiction Professional Network and is a co-host of the Food Junkies Podcast. Dr. Georgia Ede, MD is a Harvard-trained, board-certified psychiatrist specializing in college mental health and nutritional psychiatry. She has 18 years of clinical experience in hospitals, community health centers, specialty clinics, and private practices, utilizing medications and psychotherapy to help adults of all ages. She served as a staff psychiatrist and nutrition consultant for seven years at Harvard University Health Services and for five years at Smith College in Western Massachusetts.
