Learning a new skill, like playing the guitar, requires transforming theoretical knowledge into practical ability. The author shares "Golden Rules" for mastering any new skill, derived from their guitar-learning journey. These rules include:Consistency is King: Regular, short practice sessions are more effective than infrequent, long ones.Immerse Yourself: Become deeply familiar with the fundamental elements of the skill, much like learning to speak a language.Analyze Your Faux Pas: Identify and understand the root causes of your mistakes to correct them.Focus on the Fretboard, Not the Fame: Concentrate on controllable actions like practicing, rather than obsessing over long-term goals or rapid progress.Don't Try to Learn Everything: Be strategic and focus on a few key areas for improvement instead of trying to absorb all available knowledge at once.Turn Knowledge into Skill with Tiered Tremolos: Systematically practice new concepts at increasing levels of difficulty and pressure to build proficiency.Don't Forget to Rock Out (and Have Fun!): Maintain enjoyment in the learning process to prevent burnout.Spoken by Felipe Khristopher Blue of More Than Therapy as his alias, the creative, Jamari Leonard.Do you need a therapist? Send us a textHey listeners, today's episode comes with a bonus—I accidentally turned an interview into a therapy session.Elliott Connie breaks down Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, a fast, outcome-driven approach to change. It's not about problems; it's about moving forward—whether in life, fitness, or anything else. Then we hit a common parenting dilemma: Is screen time really the enemy? Elliott flips the script—what matters isn't less screen time but more family connection, dinner table talks, and real-world experiences (woah, maybe focusing on the solution is really the key here). Positive thinking and the law of attraction? Not magic, not science. They boost mood but won't change your life. Real change comes from defining your goals and making choices that align with them. Are your daily actions moving you forward or just feeding short-term gratification? Fall in love with the version of you that's on track. Success isn't about feeling good now—it's about staying the course.Elliott says winners keep their eye on the prize, even in setbacks. The real challenge isn't morning motivation—it's pushing through when you're drained. And then, the bigger picture. With Donald Trump newly inaugurated in the USA, Elliott drops this: “This is not the country I thought it was.” When did hate become so acceptable? His solution: honor people with love and respect. As you tune out, ask yourself, What outcome do you want? What difference would it make? Quitting is easy. Success means choosing discomfort over and over again. Get addicted to outcomes. What's Inside:What is Solution-Focused Therapy? Is screen time the problem we think it is?How to get addicted to outcomes?Getting through dark times in the world. You might have sensed my hesitation when it came to that conversation about screen time…I need to deep dive into my feelings about this, but it is changing something in me—my reaction to information and what I wanna do with it. So what are you going to do about this information? Katie has been working full-time in two different schools with students as a counsellor, family and play therapist as well as has a part-time private practice on Saturdays. When she is not doing virtual sessions with her clients, she sees them outside in nature with her dog.  Since she has been working full-time in schools for the last 10 years, Katie is now starting to truly give her private practice the attention and energy it needs for her to develop it more fully. One day she hopes to work solely in her practice full-time, hire a team to work alongside her, and specialize in play therapy.  Join us for our conversation today, where we talk about her journey, struggles, and wins throughout this time!  MEET KATIE Katie Lutes is a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) with experience in education since 2003 and counselling since 2011. She specializes in working with children and adolescents aged 5-19, utilizing modalities like Solution Focused Therapy, CBT, Animal-Assisted Therapy, and Play Therapy. Katie's part-time private practice offers individual, group, and family counselling sessions, both in nature and online. She is passionate about incorporating animals into the healing process  Her practice is based in Victoria, British Columbia. Learn more about Katie on her website, Instagram account, Psychology Today, and LinkedIn profile.  In this episode:  Katie's experience with building a private practice Seeing clients  Promoting nature therapy  Overcoming private practice struggles  Katie's hope for the future  Katie's experience with building a private practice  Katie started her private practice in 2015, but only seriously started giving it the attention it needs to grow from 2022 onwards.  Katie has been working in the school system for 10 years now, which is why she has decided to move from working in the school system to working more intentionally with her own clients in her practice. She explains that she wants to stay with clients for longer - to see them through their healing journeys for a longer time than she can with students in schools.   Seeing clients  While still working with students in one school full-time, Katie is seeing clients in her practice too. She usually takes one to two clients at a time.  Due to still working full-time, she sees her clients either on Saturdays or sometimes during weekday evenings when her schedule can fit them in.  At the moment, Katie is working on building up her virtual client base.  Promoting nature therapy  Katie shares a lot about her nature and animal therapy modalities through her Instagram profile. She's used Facebook and Instagram paid ads through Meta.  Additionally, she has begun networking and connecting with doctors, pediatricians, and children-centered spaces to connect with kids and their families for therapy.  Overcoming private practice struggles One of Katie's main issues has been broadening her financial bandwidth so that she can put more money into building up her private practice.  She built her website herself and set up her Psychology Today profile from listening to this podcast but finding the motivation and the financial success to add the rest of the pieces is taking more time than Katie realized.  Katie's hope for the future  Katie wants to be a full-time play therapist! And that is what she is working toward each year. She wants to work half-time, hire some other therapists into her practice with different modalities, and have everyone functioning under a holistic approach to working with their clients.  Connect with me: Instagram Website  Resources mentioned and useful links: Ep 155: Amy Eriksson: Establishing a Successful Group Private Practice in Canada | EP 155  Learn more about the tools and deals that I love and use for my Canadian private practice Sign up for my free e-course on How to Start an Online Canadian Private Practice Jane App (use code FEARLESS for one month free) Get some help and freebies on your website with WordPress!  Learn more about Katie on her website, Instagram account, Psychology Today, and LinkedIn profile Rate, review, and subscribe to this podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon, and TuneIn

Meet Rachel Fleischman – a licensed social worker, psychotherapist, registered expressive arts therapist, workshop facilitator, and speaker who, over the last two decades has supported thousands of humans to deepen their creativity, feel understood, and love themselves fiercely. Through her private practice, Bliss Counseling, and a unique movement system she developed called Dance Your Bliss, Rachel works with individuals and couples and has expertise in crisis management, trust, body image, premarital and marital issues, sex therapy, depression, anxiety, life transition, and panic disorder, to name a few. Rachel's love for supporting others began at a young age in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she grew up experiencing complex trauma and learned about resilience and self-reliance as she raised herself. She found reprieve through dance classes and put herself through college and graduate school, where she also taught aerobics (which she thoroughly enjoyed). At the age of 24, Rachel took care of her dying father by teaching him exercises, which sparked the ideas surrounding the Dance Your Bliss classes and programs that she would later go on to develop. “As a young person, I often found myself being called upon to help others who were having difficulty coping with life situations. I had this ability to really “get” them and wanted desperately to learn more about how we process emotions, deal with adversity, and thrive,” says Fleischman. “During my 23 years practicing, I've trained with Esther Perel, the Gottmans and many other clinicians. I have studied Couples Counseling, sex therapy, CBT, and Solution-Focused Therapy. I refuse to stop learning – my clients mean the world to me!” Fleischman is currently developing new e-books and coursework surrounding perimenopause and menopause, and working with individual clients. She can regularly be found leading international workshops and programs at conferences, corporate retreats, and wellness centers such as the Esalen Institute, the Omega Institute's Women and Courage Conference, Canyon Ranch, the Naropa Institute's Hakomi Conference, the Hollyhock Retreat Center, UCSF Women's Health, Rancho La Puerta Spa, and the International Dance Therapy Conference. Her sought-after mental health expertise has been featured on numerous podcasts and in magazines such as Verywell Mind, Best Life, Psychology Today and Elephant Journal. Rachel also aims to give back to her local community by volunteering at the San Francisco Public Libraries and leads a variety of pro-bono movement activities at organizations such as the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. In her spare time Fleischman enjoys crafting and spending time in nature with her husband in and around San Francisco, California, where she currently resides.   Join us in this heartfelt episode as Rachel opens up about her personal journey and the origins of her deep passion for serving others. In this week's episode, Joelle Maletis and Hailey Kanigan discuss using therapy techniques, like CBT, and EMDR to help their clients reach their goals. In this interview, Scott discusses how he came to his work focusing on Feedback Informed Treatment and deliberate practice. He discussed how when working with the Solution Focused Therapy founders, independent research found that the approach was effective, but not so significantly more effective than other approaches. He explained how this was surprising to him, and when he looked into it more, he found this finding was true when applied to all theories and techniques. He discussed his drive to improve as a clinician himself and his work with Michael Lambert and Lynn Johnson in looking at the common factors related to outcome and using client feedback to improve alliance and thus outcome. We discussed how continuing education is often focus on theory and technique, and how if a clinician would like to improve their effectiveness with clients, they need to focus on improving their relationships with clients. He discussed learning about Anders Ericsson's research related to deliberate practice, and how clinicians can use this to improve their work with clients. We discussed how research is often focused on symptoms, but it is actually the individual's functioning that is more important as functioning is often what brings clients into treatment, rather than symptoms. He explained that when working in drug and alcohol treatment, he often wondered why the clients had not sought treatment earlier, and it was often an effect on their functioning (e.g., losing their partner, losing their job) that propelled them into treatment. Scott discusses how often when people consult with him, he always returns to why the client is in therapy and what they want out of it, which many therapists forget about as they turn their attention towards the symptoms.
