Understanding the transformative power of adopting new habits is paramount in our journey toward healing and personal growth, but we're often misguided in developing new habits thinking we need to do something big, drastic or "all at once." We're caught up in the desire to "break" habits before they break us. What if there was a different way to think about habit change? What if you asked yourself, "How Can I Heal Myself Today?" Dr. Laurie Marbas, MD, MBA is a double board-certified family medicine and lifestyle medicine physician. She emphasizes the notion that instead of merely attempting to break detrimental habits, we should focus on healing them through awareness and intentionality. By doing so, we can cultivate a nurturing relationship with ourselves and create sustainable change that is both manageable and profound. Dr. Marbas shares the significance of developing microhabits—small, actionable steps that can be easily integrated into our daily routines—as a way of becoming our owne "habit healer." This episode serves not only as a guide to personal growth but as an invitation to redefine our relationship with our habits in a more loving and supportive manner. Dr. Laurie Marbas, a board-certified physician in both family and lifestyle medicine, initially trained in a traditional medical setting before her practice and perspective evolved toward integrating plant-based nutrition into her medical approach. Her journey toward plant-based medicine began serendipitously after a patient in Rifle, Colorado, shared remarkable health improvements following dietary changes. Intrigued by her patient's experience with eliminating meat and dairy, Dr. Marbas began researching plant-based diets, eventually encountering The China Study, a pivotal moment that deepened her commitment to using diet as a preventive measure in healthcare. Impact of Plant-Based Diet on Chronic Illness Dr. Marbas shares compelling stories from her practice, including patients with serious autoimmune conditions like lupus. She describes the transformative impact of plant-based diets, exemplified by a lupus patient who saw significant health improvements, including weight loss, reduced inflammation, and a notable decrease in medication dependence. For Dr. Marbas, the results in her patients reinforced the power of nutrition, convincing her to adopt a fully plant-based approach in both her personal and professional life. Implementing Plant-Based Programs in Hospitals In collaboration with colleagues and plant-based chefs, Dr. Marbas implemented a study in Colorado's Grand River Hospital to test the effects of plant-based meals on hospital employees. Over 30 days, the program yielded promising results, including weight loss and a decrease in pre-diabetic conditions. This experience highlighted the potential for plant-based interventions within healthcare settings, extending beyond patient care to improve employee wellness. Founding of the Plantrition Project and Plant-Based Telehealth A visionary in plant-based medicine, Dr. Marbas co-founded Plant-Based Telehealth, a virtual medical service focused on plant-based health and wellness. After a successful start, Plant-Based Telehealth was sold to Whole Foods founder John Mackey in 2022. Dr. Marbas' involvement in the Plantrition Project, an organization dedicated to educating healthcare professionals on plant-based nutrition, further solidified her commitment to expanding the reach of nutrition-based preventive medicine. A healthy lifestyle doesn't mean you won't suffer during peri or postmenopause. Many women are led to believe that if they exercise, eat healthy, and practice all the right lifestyle habits that menopause won't really affect them. Nothing could be further from the truth. Even if you're doing “everything right” you can still be blindsided by hot flashes, sleepless nights, joint pain, mood swings and/or other symptoms, and if you are, pharmaceutical tools like hormone therapy are there for you. That's the message that award-winning lifestyle medicine physician Dr. Laurie Marbas–who was in that very position herself–wants all women to know. To work with Dr. Laurie Marbas, visit: https://www.drmarbas.com/ In this episode, Dr. Marbas interviews Dr. Dayna Lee Baggley who is the CEO of DLBA and a Registered Psychologist. Dr. Baggley explores the significance of acknowledging our thoughts and feelings without allowing them to control our actions and decision-making. She uses the analogy of being a bus driver with passengers representing our thoughts and feelings. These passengers can be demanding and bothersome, dictating our direction. They may include anxious or angry thoughts that can lead us astray. However, attempting to ignore or suppress these thoughts and feelings often amplifies them. Instead, Dr. Baggley suggests developing a relationship with our thoughts and feelings where we acknowledge them but don't let them take the wheel. She emphasizes that our survival mind, which generates these automatic thoughts, doesn't typically guide us toward behavior aligned with our values. Instead, it often leads us towards short-term solutions that may not be beneficial in the long run. To counteract this, Dr. Baggley recommends evaluating whether a thought or feeling will move us closer to or further away from what truly matters to us. If it will move us away, She introduces the concept of diffusion, which involves disengaging from these thoughts and not allowing them to take control. They explain that we don't need to convince ourselves that these thoughts are false, but rather convince ourselves that they won't lead us towards what matters. Overall, the episode emphasizes the importance of acknowledging our thoughts and feelings without letting them dictate our actions and decision-making. By practicing diffusion and not allowing these thoughts to take over, we can focus on what truly matters to us and make choices that align with our values. Earlier this week, we shared part one of this conversation, all about how to improve your health + mood. If you've been feeling a bit sluggish lately or just wanna get out of a funk, this one's for you. Now, if you haven't heard part one, go back and listen to that one first. But if you're ready to continue on, let's pick back up here with my conversation with Dr. Laurie Marbas as she simplifies how to improve your health + mood. Here's how.  My special guest today is Dr. Laurie Marbas and she's simplifying how to improve your health + mood. We tackle and simplify all aspects of it, including: When you're ready to improve your health, what the first step is to resetting things What the long term impact of your food choices are and how it can not only affect your sleep, but your relationships and decision-making abilities as well How to improve your mood with food, sharing specifically which foods and spices are total mood boosters Parents face some big obstacles when trying to feed their kids a consistently healthy diet - Dr Laurie shares her best tips to getting them more interested in their fruits and veggies …and ultimately, how to eat healthy on a budget and also break the habit of fast food in your life. Yet once again, we're trying something new this week, splitting up the episode into two parts. So we are releasing the first half on Tuesday and part two on Friday. That way, the content is in a smaller, bite-size portion for you to listen to now, simmer on this entire week and be intentional with integrating what you learn into your everyday life. We are simplifying our episodes to be shorter in length, easier to listen to, on-the-go. I know we all are on-the-go these days and our old ways of listening to podcasts (either on our commute or at the gym) have changed since the pandemic began… let us know if you like this new way of listening to The Simplifiers Podcast. Shorter episodes, split into two for simpler learning. Q: Are you ready to improve your health + mood? If yes, this one is for you. Dr. Laurie Marbas is a family practice physician currently based in Boca Raton, Florida. In her position as Medical Director of Dr. Joel Furhman's Health Oasis, an outpatient clinic, she helps people regain their health and reverse chronic diseases with diet and lifestyle changes. While an Active Duty Medical doctor with the air force, Dr. Marbas served abroad in various countries and is well traveled in the US, having worked and lived in New Mexico, Oregon, Maryland, Texas, Colorado, and Florida. Dr. Marbas's insightful approach perpetuates a theme you may be recognizing more and more in various interviews on my podcasts: Like several other dedicated doctors, she was able and willing to rethink the efficacy of standard practice methods in the medical paradigm when it came to treating chronic ailments such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity. But she had serious homework to do on lifestyle medicine because when she started treating her patients in this new way, there wasn't that much information out there, which goes to show how extraordinary she is. Find out how 3 separate patients with three seemingly unrelated conditions including a stomach ache, ADHD and Lupus along with a story about a refrigerator led Dr. Marbas to fundamentally change the way she treats patients, as well as totally revamp the way she feeds her family and ultimately deliver her to her dream job.
