Q&A on the film William Tell with actors Claes Bang and Jonah Hauer-King, and writer/director/producer Nick Hamm. Moderated by Mara Webster, In Creative Company. The narrative unfolds in the 14th Century amidst the days of the Holy Roman Empire where Europe's nations fiercely vie for supremacy and the ambitious Austrians, desiring more land, encroach upon Switzerland, a serene and pastoral nation.
I think you'll enjoy this week's BEHIND THE LENS and the films we are discussing, but more than that, the filmmakers and actors I'm speaking with. Some jam-packed interviews today as we kick things off with my exclusive interview with actors CLAES BANG and JONAH HAUER-KING, together with writer/director NICK HAMM talking about his beautiful epic WILLIAM TELL. And then you'll hear from writer and executive producer CHARLENE DAVIS and director/producer DAFNA YACHIN discussing their new film, RELATIVE CONTROL. This first interview is one of those times I wish we could have done the interview in person; of course, I wish that with every interview. But in this case, these three gentlemen are so much fun and have such a wonderful rapport that I know that being together in person would have been an even bigger blast than what you're about to hear. I'm talking about CLAES BANG, JONAH HAUER-KING, and NICK HAMM and their wonderful film, WILLIAM TELL. Written and directed by Nick, based on the play by Friedrich Schiller, they have beautifully married history and legend and brought it to life in an indelible epic result. Then we shift gears and dive into RELATIVE CONTROL with the women behind this gem – director DAFNA YACHIN and screenwriter CHARLENE DAVIS. As you'll hear, Charlene and Dafna break down the film from script to screen. Written by Charlene, the script – her first after a decades long career as an attorney – is based on Charlene's personal experiences – was developed over a few years and speaks to not only the challenges of caring for aging parents, but caring for yourself as time marches on and the responsibility for caring for your parents overtakes one's own life. There is some magical casting here with Teri Polo as Sara and Patrick McDade as Sara's father Joe. Their chemistry truly captures the dynamic of a daughter and father navigating complex family dynamics. While Charlene focuses more on the script, Dafna dives into Anthony Berenato Jr's cinematography, developing a visual tonal bandwidth of lightness and bright tones versus the heavier subject matter, working with editor John Knapich, and some of the production challenges which involved a 14-day shoot, the impact of the pandemic, and shooting in 100 degree Delaware heat in July and August with the film set in the Fall/Winter. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Early in 14th century Switzerland was under the control of their far more powerful neighbour, Hapsburg Austria. In the small town of Aldorf in the canton of Uri, which is at the centre of Switzerland, near Lake Lucern and the city of Zurich there lived a brutal Austrian governor, Albrecht Gessler. Gessler hated the Swiss, a proud and rebellious people, and to remind them of their subjugation he placed his hat on a large post in the middle of the town, and demanded the Swiss bow when passing. William Tell, an expert crossbowman and hunter, refused. Furious, Gessler set Tell a challenge. Shoot an apple off his son's head, from 100 yards, as the wretched child was tied to the post or the boy would be executed. Tell reluctantly agreed, and with a miraculous shot he succeeded, and so began the revolt against Austria and Switzerland's journey to independence for which it is known today, as well as dubious banking practises. Joining the podcast is the director Nick Hamm who has made a film of William Tell, starring Claes Bang, Ben Kingsley, Jonathan Pryce, Golshifteh Farahani, Rafe Spall, Ellie Bamber and Connor Swindells. UNSTOPPABLE director Billy Goldenberg and editor Brett Reed have had a working relationship for over twenty years, going back to their time together on COYOTE UGLY (2000). Since that film, they've logged a lot of hours as "editor and assistant" or "editor and additional editor", but their new film brings about a whole new dynamic, "director and editor". UNSTOPPABLE is the inspiring true story of Anthony Robles (Jharrel Jerome) who was born with one leg but whose indomitable spirit and unbreakable resolve empowered him to defy the odds and pursue his dreams. With the unwavering love and support of his devoted mother Judy (Jennifer Lopez) and the encouragement of his coaches, Anthony fights through adversity to earn a spot on the Arizona State Wrestling team. But it will demand everything he has, physically and mentally, to achieve his ultimate quest to become an NCAA Champion. WILLIAM GOLDENBERG, ACE While UNSTOPPABLE is Billy's first shot at directing, he is one of the most well-respected and sought-after film editors working today. He won an Academy Award, BAFTA Award, and the American Cinema Editors' (ACE) Eddie Award for his outstanding work on the 2013 Best Picture winner, Argo, directed by Ben Affleck. His recent editing credits include Air, 22 July, Unbroken, and Concussion. Goldenberg received dual Oscar nominations in 2013, also being nominated, along with editor Dylan Tichenor, for his work on Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty. In 2015, Billy was again nominated for an Oscar, a BAFTA Award, and an Eddie Award for the historical thriller The Imitation Game, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley. He was previously Oscar-nominated for his editing work on Seabiscuit, and on Michael Mann's controversial film The Insider (with Paul Rubell and David Rosenbloom). Goldenberg was also part of the editing team on Mann's Heat, Ali, and Miami Vice BRETT M. REED Prior to cutting UNSTOPPABLE for Billy, Brett also collaborated with Artists Equity on Doug Liman's film THE INSTIGATORS, starring Matt Damon, Casey Affleck and Hong Chau. On todays episode Cid and Jake talk about the record Youth by the band Citizen for the records 10 year anniversary. The pair talk about the records mature take on a break up the singer had. The content of the songs often tries to find answers to the why in the singer's heartbreak and what his ex-girlfriend felt during that time as he seemingly asks her how she feels. It dives deep into the complex emotions that an older teen and or young adult would feel in the end of a relationship. Theres angst but tempered with a maturity and quest for insight and understanding into ones own emotions as well as determining those of the partner. It tackles how as we age we begin to be able to examine relationships and while breaking up sucks, can leave emotional attachments lover who you are no attached to, a ghost that haunts you as you watch them move on with their life. The sound of the record hits with a good blend of emo and grunge with hints of pop punk and post hardcore here and there. Citizen, currently consisting or Mat Kerekes, the vocalist, Nick Hamm, the lead guitarist, and Eric Hamm, the bassist, was formed in 2009 in Michigan and Ohio. The band has had several members come and go such as many drummers, which Kerekes plays for the records but not live.

In this episode of the podcast I talk with director Nick Hamm about his latest film, Driven. Driven is a true story based on the events that surrounded John DeLorean and the drug smuggling scandal he was involved in. DRIVEN is in theaters and on digital/demand as of August 16, 2019.
Nick Hamm loves working with actors. With a background in theater, he’s very familiar with proper blocking, on set relationships, and the dynamics of storytelling. The British director is perhaps best known for the Robert DeNiro film ‘Godsend,’ ‘Killing Bono,’ and now, ‘Driven.’ In his latest film, audiences are invited to uncover the story of John DeLorean, his vehicle creations, and his unusual involvement with big business, narcotics, and the FBI. The thriller comes from screenwriter Colin Bateman and stars Jason Sudeikis, Corey Stoll, Lee Pace, and Judy Greer. In this interview, Hamm discusses his transition from theater info filmmaking, the single most important thing he learned in the theater, what he looks for in a screenplay, how to play the top of the emotion, how to find thread in a complex narrative, and how the crew filmed in the aftermath of a hurricane. DRIVEN is a fast-paced, comedic crime thriller of a bromance gone wrong between John DeLorean, played by Lee Pace (Captain Marvel, Guardians of the Galaxy, The Book of Henry), and Jim Hoffman, played by Jason Sudeikis (Colossal, Booksmart). Set in early 1980s California, the story follows the meteoric rise of the golden boy of the automotive industry, John DeLorean and his iconic DeLorean Motor Company, through the eyes of his friendship with charming, ex-con pilot turned FBI informant, Jim Hoffman. DeLorean turned to unsavory activities to save his financially troubled DeLorean Motor Company, and it was Hoffman who was all too willing to lure the car designer / engineer into a cocaine trafficking ring set up by the FBI. Isabel Arraiza is Cristina DeLorean, DeLorean’s fashion model wife, Judy Greer (Ant-Man, Jurassic World, War for the Planet of the Apes) is Ellen Hoffman, Hoffman’s direct, no nonsense wife and Corey Stoll (First Man, Ant-Man, Midnight in Paris) is ambitious FBI Special Agent Benedict Tisa. Director Nick Hamm joins us for a conversation on the challenges of re-creating the time and place where the DeLorean / Hoffman took place and establishing a comedic tone that propels this highly entertaining story. "U.S bands are always pushing things forward and it's hard to keep up with, frankly", confessed Nick Hamm, guitarist for pop/punk outfit Citizen. "Somehow we've been lucky enough to exist through several major changes. The whole landscape of rock music was very different when we started as compared to now so we're lucky to still be here. We're lucky people are still putting up with us (laughs)".Citizen tour this country early next year, performing at Unify as well as a couple of select sideshows, and Hamm says the band is excited to be returning."This is gonna be the first time that we're playing a lot of new songs and in my opinion, we're a totally different band to the last time we were there so I'm really excited to be back and re-introduce ourselves to people over there".In the full interview Nick elaborates on those differences, gives some insight into what fans can expect to see, the history of the band and how they have adapted musically, the chasm between releasing E.P's as opposed to full albums, experimenting with music and how important it is in the modern age plus more.
