Pearl Curran (1883-1937) was an author. She claimed to serve as the medium for “Patience Worth,” a spirit she first contacted via a ouija board. The phenomenon spawned great public interest and later backlash, as a range of psychologists, journalists, and general readers speculated about Patience and Pearl. As Pearl's commercial success as an author dwindled, she supported herself with traveling ouija board demonstrations. He was reminded of a short episode he produced about Pearl Curran and Patience Worth. :57 Patrick reads portions of “Patience Worth: Author From the Great Beyond” by Gioia Diliberto for Smithsonian Magazine from September of 2010. 2:20 “Speaking through a Ouija board operated by Pearl Lenore Curran, a St. Louis housewife of limited education, Patience Worth was nothing short of a national phenomenon in the early years of the 20th century. Though her works are virtually forgotten today, the prestigious Braithwaite anthology listed five of her poems among the nation's best published in 1917, and the New York Times hailed her first novel as a ‘feat of literary composition.' Her output was stunning. In addition to seven books, she produced voluminous poetry, short stories, plays and reams of sparkling conversation—nearly four million words between 1913 and 1937. Some evenings she worked on a novel, a poem and a play simultaneously, alternating her dictation from one to another without missing a beat.” 4:36 “The Patience Worth case remains one of the most tantalizing literary mysteries of the last century, a window onto a vanished era when magic seemed to exist because so many people believed in it. In the decades since Pearl Curran's death, in 1937, no one has explained how she produced Patience's writing.” 8:32 “At first Pearl spelled out every letter with the Ouija board, but as time passed, the mere touch of her hand on the pointer loosed a flood of spoken words. Eventually, she abandoned the board entirely; a feeling of slight pressure in her head would announce Patience's arrival, and Pearl would begin reciting.” 15:28 Check out the book, The Patience of Pearl: Spiritualism and Authorship in the Writings of Pearl Curran by Daniel B. Shea. 18:23 Looking back at episode 32 of the Big Seance Podcast from 2015, where Patrick reads the article, “Ghostwriter and Ghost: The Strange Case of Pearl Curran & Patience Worth” by Ed Simon, from The Public Domain Review. 18:47 Two Moms and a Baby from the article, “Ouija poet Patience Worth: 100 years and many moons later”, by Jane Henderson, from the St. Louis Post Dispatch. 35:58 Outro 39:34 A special THANK YOU to Patreon supporters at the Super Paranerd and Parlor Guest level! 40:50     The Big Seance Podcast can be found right here, on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Pandora, Spotify, TuneIn Radio, Amazon Music, Audible, iHeart Radio, and YouTube.                    Between 1912 and 1937 Patience Worth would write several books and a ton of poetry from beyond the grave. Patience allegedly lived in the 1600's and you're probably wondering how a ghost became a published author, through a Ouija board thats how. A woman named Pearl Curran would use the board to talk to Patience and then copy her stories down and have them published using the spirits name rather than her own.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! (Patience Worth And The Ouija Board) *** A home in India is grappling with an angry ghost that apparently has chosen to throw potatoes at it. (Terrifying Tater Tosser) *** It began with a blast the power of a nuclear bomb, lights filled the skies, a fireball the size of the moon streaked across the sky. But this wasn't a UFO or anything paranormal or supernatural. This was all man-made – and it was only the beginning of something much more sinister that was planned. (The Japanese Death Cult's Plan To Split The World In Two) *** John Hatfield could not stay out of trouble. Probably due to the fact that he kept making up false identifies for himself, and getting into trouble with those identities. His antics were so well known that later, a woman who created a falsehood about herself was accused of being an imposter just like him. We'll look at both of their strange stories! (The Keswick Imposter, and the Fasting-Woman of Tutbury) *** Long before Sybil and the Three Faces of Eve, there was Doris Fischer and her case is still considered a classic. In the early 1900s, Pearl Lenore Curran began experimenting with a Ouija board.  Shortly after a woman named Patience Worth started communicating with her. They would go on to publish novels, plays, poems and essays together.  Nearly a million of Patience's words were transcribed. Pearl claimed to be nothing more than a vessel for Patience Worth. Scientists, psychics and skeptics had a hard time disproving the existence of the spirit who lived in the 17th century. Support the show

This week Stauney introduces us to an  strange pairing, a woman and the ghost she claimed was using her to write poetry and novels.  Before this incident, Pearl Lenore Curran lived a very normal and ordinary life, with dreams to work in music and be a singer. However, after an "encounter" with an ouija board, she soon begins to claim that she is communicating directly with a ghost named Patience Worth and that Patience is using Pearl as a tool in order to write her poetry and novels from the other side of the grave. This throws Pearl into the limelight, as well as a bunch of controversies around the spirituality movement. We talk about Pearl's early life, what we know about Patience Worth, Ouija board history, and debate whether or not this encounter with Patience was fact or fiction.Check out our Hilma Af Klint EpisodeWant to check out some of our favorite books? Episode 76 of the Paranormal Mysteries Podcast:The topic of today’s show focuses on a phenomenon known as channeling which is a form of Mediumship in which a person allows themselves to be taken over by or to receive messages from another personality while in a dissociated state of consciousness or trance. Whereas mediumship is a term most often applied to communication with the dead, channeling is used for interaction with various nonphysical beings, including Angels, nature spirits, totem or guardian spirits, deities, demons, higher intelligences, and extraterrestrials, as well as spirits of the dead.Channeling, like mediumship, has ancient roots. The ancient Egyptians used states of mystical trance to communicate with the gods. In ancient China, shaman-like people used trance states to interact with the spirit world. Channeling is recorded in the history of early India, and in ancient Greece it was used for oracular prophecy. Many spiritual leaders have received their guidance through channeling; examples are the prophets of the Old Testament and Muhammad, who received the teachings of the Koran while in trances and in DREAMS.In the United States, channeling came into vogue in the 1970s when the channeled writings of the entity Seth, speaking through Jane Roberts, became best-selling books. Similar to the rush of popular interest in Spiritualist mediumship that occurred in the 19th century, channelers went into business, some charging exorbitant fees for sittings. Fad interest was over by the end of the 1980s, although the more prominent “channels,” as some individuals prefer to be called, retained their followings. In many respects, today’s topic is a perfect example of this phenomenon, but it would seem that the strange story of Pearl Curran and Patience Worth would bring forward just as many skeptics as it would believers. So much so, that even today it’s regarded as one of the most interesting and controversial cases of channeling in history, but I’ll let you be the judge.Podcast Source:https://www.spreaker.com/show/paranormal-mysteries-podcastContact:Email: paranormalmysteriespodcast@gmail.comWebsite: http://paranormalmysteriespodcast.comSupport The Podcast:Patreon Membership:https://www.patreon.com/join/paranormalmysteries?One-Time Donation:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/paranormalSpecial Thanks to All of Our Wonderful Supporters:Trista, Robin, Marjorie, Clyde, Kathy, Brett, Cassandra, Jan, Sarah F, Skyler, Courtney B, Worsenary, Dave, Kortnie W, Juli, Tiffany, Tom, Stephen, Alysa, Mystica, Carley, Kyriakos, Eunecka, Mary, Andrew, Sarah, Angie, Nick, James S, Molybdenum, Mattie, KA, Collin, James P, Chris, Christy, Buster, Michael, Kim, Amanda, Ivonne, Santiago, Angelo, Jordan, Andrea, Colt, Analyssa, Kasey, Sonia, Kadee, Pam, Christina, Seth, Lisa, Kevin, Breeann, Raymond, Florencia, Katie, Arely, Haze, Stella, Lydia, Shannonlee, Karl, Whitney, T.F., Caleb, Kristin, Jess, Kyle, Valerie, Ashley, Sarah, Ruben, Lara, Kristine, Benjamin, Fenway, Evelyn, Luz, Marjolaine, Olga, Abigail, Kirby, Tia, Lucie, Lesley, Laura, Karen, Someone, Nhimo, Lunico, Aaron, Audrey, LisaSocial Media:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/paranormalmysteriespodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/paranormalmysteriespodcastTwitter: https://twitter.com/ParaMysteryPodSources:* LONGREADS “Ghost Writer: The Story of Patience Worth, the Posthumous Author” (longreads.com)*Occult World (occult-world.com)

So much so, that even today it’s regarded as one of the most interesting and controversial cases of channeling in history, but I’ll let you be the judge.Podcast Source:https://www.spreaker.com/show/paranormal-mysteries-podcastContact:Email: paranormalmysteriespodcast@gmail.comWebsite: http://paranormalmysteriespodcast.comSupport The Podcast:Patreon Membership:https://www.patreon.com/join/paranormalmysteries?One-Time Donation:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/paranormalSpecial Thanks to All of Our Wonderful Supporters:Trista, Robin, Marjorie, Clyde, Kathy, Brett, Cassandra, Jan, Sarah F, Skyler, Courtney B, Worsenary, Dave, Kortnie W, Juli, Tiffany, Tom, Stephen, Alysa, Mystica, Carley, Kyriakos, Eunecka, Mary, Andrew, Sarah, Angie, Nick, James S, Molybdenum, Mattie, KA, Collin, James P, Chris, Christy, Buster, Michael, Kim, Amanda, Ivonne, Santiago, Angelo, Jordan, Andrea, Colt, Analyssa, Kasey, Sonia, Kadee, Pam, Christina, Seth, Lisa, Kevin, Breeann, Raymond, Florencia, Katie, Arely, Haze, Stella, Lydia, Shannonlee, Karl, Whitney, T.F., Caleb, Kristin, Jess, Kyle, Valerie, Ashley, Sarah, Ruben, Lara, Kristine, Benjamin, Fenway, Evelyn, Luz, Marjolaine, Olga, Abigail, Kirby, Tia, Lucie, Lesley, Laura, Karen, Someone, Nhimo, Lunico, Aaron, Audrey, LisaSocial Media:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/paranormalmysteriespodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/paranormalmysteriespodcastTwitter: https://twitter.com/ParaMysteryPodSources:* LONGREADS “Ghost Writer: The Story of Patience Worth, the Posthumous Author” (longreads.com)*Occult World (occult-world.com)

Thank you!IN THIS EPISODE: How did Pearl Curran, an ordinary St. Louis housewife, become the center of one of the greatest paranormal mysteries of all time? (Patience Worth And The Ouija Board) *** A home in India is grappling with an angry ghost that apparently has chosen to throw potatoes at it. (Terrifying Tater Tosser) *** It began with a blast the power of a nuclear bomb, lights filled the skies, a fireball the size of the moon streaked across the sky. But this wasn’t a UFO or anything paranormal or supernatural. This was all man-made – and it was only the beginning of something much more sinister that was planned. (The Japanese Death Cult’s Plan To Split The World In Two) *** John Hatfield could not stay out of trouble. Probably due to the fact that he kept making up false identifies for himself, and getting into trouble with those identities. His antics were so well known that later, a woman who created a falsehood about herself was accused of being an imposter just like him. We’ll look at both of their strange stories! (The Keswick Imposter, and the Fasting-Woman of Tutbury) *** Long before Sybil and the Three Faces of Eve, there was Doris Fischer and her case is still considered a classic. Author of The Holly Water Incident William Dorian joins us to preview his new book.  William was first introduced to the paranormal world when he became friends with Eileen Curren Murphy, the daughter of Pearl Curren, the internationally famous channel for the Patience Worth spirit who wrote best selling and critically acclaimed novels, poetry and short stories via the Ouija board and automatic writing during the first three decades of the 20th century. Dorian and Eileen also contacted Patience during their brief friendship in 1974-75 in New Orleans, Louisiana, through the Ouija board and later Eileen’s automatic writing.       Even after he no longer lived near Eileen, Dorian found he could still communicate with Patience via the Ouija board and continued to do so for 20 years, primarily as something of a parlor trick/party game. Never seeing anything evil or harmful in the practice, he frequently played ‘ouija’ with his daughter, Brittany, after she got to be a teenager.       That, of course, is when ‘all hell broke lose’ and Brittany started contacting negative entities on the Ouija board without her father being present. This eventually led to her possession by demonic entities when she was 15 and several exorcisms and a haunting of their home for 17 years. The haunting finally ended when Renee’ Anderson and her paranormal team ousted the offending spirits in 2017.

In 1913, Pearl Curran, a St. Louis housewife, sat at a Ouija board with her friends when suddenly the planchette went wild under her hands. It said, "Many moons ago I lived. Again I come. Patience Worth my name." And so began the literary career of the long-dead Patience Worth. Pearl transcribed novels, plays, essays, and poetry supposedly composed by Patience, and both became celebrities. Daniel Shea, emeritus professor of English at Washington University in St. Louis, recently wrote a book about the phenomenon, The Patience of Pearl: Spiritualism and Authorship in the Writings of Pearl Curran. In it, he uses modern psychology and the writings themselves to uncover the truth of this ghostly voice.

Our sixth annual ghost story podcast takes a little twist this time around. Oh sure, we have two of New York's most FAMOUS horror stories in our first part, beginning with a spirited sailor named Mickey who haunted a classic structure on the Lower West Side. Today's it's the Ear Inn, where you better watch your drink. Then we switch to a Colonial-era tale of obsession and entrapment in old Flatbush, the tale of Melrose Hall with its secret passages, stairwells and dungeons. But in the second half, we observe New York's spiritualism craze of the early 20th century through two frightening faceoffs. In the first, its the madame of the Ouija board, Pearl Curran, and her ghostly companion Patience Worth vs. one of New York's original ghostbusters, the adventurer and conjurer Joseph Rinn. And in the final tale, Tom explores the secrets of Harry Houdini and what happens when a close confidante -- in this case, the noted author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle -- believes his powers are of a supernatural variety.
