Welcome to Protected: Adolescents & Contraception a TeamPeds Talks podcast series brought to you by the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP). Access to contraception and reproductive care is an essential aspect of adolescent-friendly health care services and to preventing teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, and more — yet many teens face significant barriers. This podcast series is a call to action for pediatric focused clinicians who can contribute significantly to increasing access for this important aspect of adolescent health care. The focus of this series is to address multiple aspects of contraceptive care — from confidentiality to various available methods and provide clinical pearls to help improve access for adolescents regardless of setting. Each guest is most knowledgeable about the laws and policies of their own state and has brought this viewpoint into their conversation. It is important to maintain knowledge of your own local, state, and federal laws that relate to the provision of reproductive health services. Our host for this series is Alison Moriarty Daley, PHD, APRN, PPCNP-BC, FAAN, an adolescent clinician who has spent nearly 30 years providing reproductive care to teens within primary care settings and educating nurse practitioner students to care for this population. The idea for this podcast series came from recent work on a collaborative project for NAPNAP that addressed reproductive access for adolescents. We felt that this series could help provide education to other nurse practitioners to help remove existing barriers and improve clinical care in this area. In this episode we will discuss Prescription-free Access to Contraceptive Pills with our guest Lin-Fan Wang, MD. The National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners does not endorse any product or service mentioned in TeamPeds Talks episodes. This podcast is not intended to replace medical advice and should be used to supplement, not replace, care by your nurse practitioner or health care provider. This has been an exciting journey. Let's talk about it!

Have you ever wondered what happens behind the closed doors of homes struggling with teenage issues? Jessica breaks down ways to foster resilience in our teenagers and improve communication through a translated version of a professional model called motivational interviewing. This was the week of Covid with the kids, so we have two segments worth listening to again!Segment 1 is a repeat of a segment we ran in October. Breast cancer awareness is so important, so this interview is worth repeating so we think about it more than just in October! Respiratory viruses in young children have many parents extremely concerned of late. Is it a cold? The flu? Covid? Or respiratory syncytial virus, also known as RSV, which causes common cold symptoms, but can also cause airway inflammation? Although anyone can get RSV, premature infants and patients under the age of two are most vulnerable to severe breathing problems due to their smaller airways. Dr. Jennifer Sonney, president of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, shares important information about the symptoms of RSV, who it affects most, and what people can do if diagnosed with RSV or how to prevent RSV.Looking for healthier bedding? Naturepedic is the brand you want to check out. Arin Schultz is the director and joins me to talk about the benefits and why what you sleep on is so important. While some aspects of life have returned to normal since the height of COVID-19, the blood donation rate has not, leading to more frequent supply shortages. Vitalant's blood donor base has dropped by about 20% since 2019 and the nonprofit organization has also experienced a severe drop in blood donations from business blood drives as many people now work remotely. Cliff Numark is the Senior Vice President for Vitalant, the nation's largest nonprofit, independent, blood donation organization and talks with Michelle about how we can help the shortage.

Welcome to the Love Where You Are podcast! In today's episode, Somer is joined with Dr. Jessica Peck, also known as Dr Nurse Momma. Jessica has been a pediatric nurse practitioner for twenty years. A native Texan, she is a clinical professor at the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing as well as president of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. She especially loves encouraging parents in her clinical practice and equipping them to build healthy relationships with their children. Jessica and I became fast friends as we sat down to discuss her new release, Behind Closed Doors: A Guide to Help Parents and Teens Navigate Through Life's Toughest Issues which provides an eye opening perspective to what teens and their families are facing in today's world. Jessica shares the main struggles her patients experience, tackles common misconceptions about the teen years and share the secret sauce to getting your teen to communicate. Thank you for being here today. Now, let's dive into the conversation! Connect with Dr. Jessica Peck: Instagram Website Buy her new book! FAVORITE TAKE-AWAYS: Stigma is a coping mechanism we have to separate ourselves from the unthinkable. Biggest issues Dr. Jessica sees behind closed doors: Vaping Substance abuse Gender identity Self harm Suicide Sexting Disordered eating It's a popular misconception that teens don't want to talk to you - that's not true! You can't parent based on instant gratification - you have to plant that seed that can be harvested in a future season. When we react in fear we hinder connection with our teens. When we react in fear, even when it is well meaning, our teens interpret our reaction as anger against them. Train yourself to say, “You know I really don't know what to say, but I want you to know I love you and we will get through this together." We don't always have to have the right answer but our teens need to know we are present. More teenagers die from disordered eating than any other mental health disorder. We are imperfect children with a perfect Father and we have imperfect children being raised by imperfect parents. The first key to good conversation with your teen is to listen before you talk. You have old school experience but they have fresh world perspective - see what they already know and then share your perspective. Choose a battle, not every battle. Release your teen from the pressure of having to give you an immediate response. My job is to be my kid's mom and not expect them to validate my role as their mom. The secret sauce is motivational interviewing - Listen Offer open ended questions Validate their emotions Give them decision making autonomy It is important that we become a safe space for our kids to come and be vulnerable. We have to stand in our kids shoes and give them the tools they need to function in their world. Having developmentally appropriate conversations upfront will prepare them. Red flags to watch out for: Distance Isolation Irritability Emotional It is never too late to try and build a healthy relationship with your teen. Pray and surrender control Serve your way back in without expecting validation God is in the business of restoration. These are the longest days and the shortest years of your life. Embrace every stage of parenting. Celebrate who they are and who they are going to become. Younger children need a gatekeeper, teenagers need a coach. Let your kids fail if it's safe - your home is a practice environment for life. Make sure your kids know their struggle does not define who they are. Teens do not need your money, the latest gadgets, a dream vacation or for you to be the perfect mom - they need your time and your attention. Teens care deeply about what you have to say about them. Nurses UnboxedDr. Danielle Altares SarikNurses and the practice of nursing are normally thought of as practicing in an in-patient, acute-care setting rather than in the community. Join me for an informative episode as Dr. Danielle Sarik and I unbox nurses! Hear how nurses provide transitional care from in-patient settings to the community setting whether it is in a patient's home, long-term care, or skilled care. Danielle discusses her research in transitional care for pediatric patients and assisting their families with these frequently, life-altering changes. We discuss telehealth and its' role in transitional care, and Dr. Sarik's funded studies supporting transitional care for neonatal and pediatric patients. Dr. Sarik, a former political strategist, talks about her view on how nurses are uniquely positioned in the community to advocate for patients, families, and communities. For 19 years in a row, the Gallup Poll has ranked nursing as the most honest and ethical profession. As one collective voice, nurses can impact great changes. Dr. Sarik encourages nurses to talk with legislators about our profession and that legislation that impacts our practice. Dr. Sarik discusses how important it is for nurses to educate our legislators and the public on the differences in nursing roles. We talk about the challenges of the pandemic and how many, including the pediatric population are having mental health challenges, and the different possibilities of nurses identifying and intervening with these challenges. Burnout among nurses and exhaustion among community members as well, must be identified early and addressed.
