In today's episode, Jenny breaks down the fundamentals of building a successful content marketing strategy, using the example of the multi-pronged content marketing strategy Hedy and Hopp built for St. Louis Children's Hospital with two key components: A separate website to aggregate the content became an “owned” platform that offered a huge SEO boost, and allowed for creative flexibility compared to the main property. It was important to have a platform to aggregate content, too, because actual social channels shift over time. A dedicated YouTube channel the brand to drive more organic traffic, and the SEO value for the YouTube channel is also tremendous. As new social channels pop up, the brand has flexibility to try them without putting all of their eggs in one basket. Jenny shares a few things to keep in mind when building a content marketing strategy from the ground up, which include the following: Content Strategy. Understand what topics are trending in the healthcare space you're in by reviewing monthly search trends. Create a big picture plan quarterly or biannually to stay relevant. Optimization. Make sure content is personalized by platform, as different platforms require different optimizations when it comes to content length, style, and strategy. Goals. Align your content structure with your goals. The original goal for St. Louis Children's was to improve brand perception by the community (which surveys showed we accomplished), but we have very clear new patient goals also. For example, if a new doc comes on board and needs their schedule filled, you can feature them with a clear “Book Dr. Sally now” CTA and their schedule will fill up if you do it right. Paid Support. Bolster organic optimizations with paid promotions to ensure new content and topics reach your target audience. Video Production. Don't let video resources stop you from creating content. Your videos don't have to have super high production! While you may want to earmark certain topics and content for higher production value, sometimes lower quality video can be seen as more trustworthy by consumers. One of St. Louis Children's Hospital's most popular series for MomDocs came from a Facebook Live that was filmed on an iPhone! Patient Privacy. Keep patient privacy top of mind. Even if your content is on a separate property, it's still a part of your organization. Make sure that the analytics and privacy solutions you use for your main property carry over.
Dr. Shobha Bhaskar, a pediatric hospitalist with St. Louis Children's Hospital, discusses common hazards to watch out for in your home during the holiday season.
The holiday season includes spending time with family and friends and a lot of food and desserts. Dr. Emily Hahn, a board-certified pediatric dentist at St. Louis Children's Hospital, discusses how parents can help keep their kids' teeth healthy during the holiday season.
Cold and flu season is here. When your child gets sick, you want to make them feel better and stop the illness from spreading to other family members. Antibiotics may come to mind. Dr. Jamie Kondis, a pediatrician at St. Louis Children's Hospital, discusses how antibiotics work and what types of illnesses require antibiotics.
While rare, pediatric strokes occur, affecting one in every 1,100 newborns and an additional 2,000 older children each year. The cause of a stroke is either a blood clot or bleeding in the brain. If left untreated, it can lead to damage or death of brain tissue. Dr. Kristin Guilliams, a pediatric neurologist with St. Louis Children's Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine, discusses stroke in children.
A law in St. Louis banning so-called transgender care for minors can now take effect after a judge struck down a lawsuit challenging it. In a two-page order, Missouri Circuit Judge Steven Ohmer wrote that the lawsuit, which was brought by the ACLU, lacked sufficient evidence to delay the legislation: “The science and medical evidence is conflicting and unclear. Accordingly, the evidence raises more questions than answers.” Activists claim that the science in favor of transgender “care” is settled. It's not true. Thankfully this judge was willing to say it out loud. This legislative push came as part of an investigation into the transgender clinic at St. Louis Children's Hospital. In February, a whistleblower alleged that the clinic had started transitioning more than 600 children between 2020 and 2022. In some cases, puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones were prescribed after just two one-hour visits. In summary, the threat is real, the “science” is false, and children's lives are at stake.

David and Patricia Stallings married in August of 1988, and with the belief that they were about to embark on their part of the American Dream, the couple bought a small white farmhouse on Lake Wauwanoka in Hillsboro, MissouriTwenty-four-year-old Patricia gave birth to the couple's first child, Ryan Stallings, in April of 1989. Even though Ryan suffered from gastronomic distress since birth, the couple were overwhelmingly happy in their new roles as parents. But on July 9th, 1989, that would all change as Ryan became horribly ill with nonstop vomiting and labored breathing. Patricia drove full speed up Highway 21 toward St. Louis with her sick baby cradled in his car seat. In a panic, Patricia got lost and ended up at Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital instead of going to St. Louis Children's Hospital, as she intended.Once there, Ryan was immediately ushered into the ICU, put on a ventilator, and had numerous tubes and IVs going into his tiny body. Patricia was overwhelmed when the doctors couldn't seem to diagnose what was wrong with him. They slammed her with a barrage of questions and then ran a complete blood and urine analysis. The staff would not allow her or David to be alone in the room with Ryan. Anytime David and Patricia were in Ryan's room, there had to be medical staff present.Three days later, Patricia was arrested on assault charges for poisoning Ryan.Join Jen and Cam as we talk about "Preconceived Notions: "Patricia Stallings"Written and researched by Lauretta AllenListener Discretion by Edward October from OctoberpodVHSExecutive Producer Nico Vitesse of The Inky Paw PrintSources:https://www.newspapers.com/image/139943203/?terms=Patricia%20Stallings&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/819970269/?terms=Patricia%20Stallings&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/207793816/?terms=Patricia%20Stallings&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/139942291/https://www.newspapers.com/image/139942651/?terms=Patricia%20Stallings&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/139958402/?terms=Patricia%20Stallings&match=1https://www.newspapers.com/image/141238228/?terms=Patricia%20Stallings&match=1 https://www.newspapers.com/image/141439318/https://www.newspapers.com/image/141439346/?terms=Patricia%20Stallings&match=1https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patricia_Stallingshttp://www.msbp.com/stlouis.htmhttps://www.law.northwestern.edu/legalclinic/wrongfulconvictions/exonerations/mo/patricia-stallings.htmlhttps://unsolved.com/gallery/patty-stallings/https://unsolvedmysteries.fandom.com/wiki/Ryan_Stallingshttps://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK559906/https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-65830799https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kathleen_Folbigghttps://www.childrenshospital.org/programs/epilepsy-genetics-programThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3647242/advertisement
A recent CBS News article claims, in its very title in fact, to separate “medical facts from misinformation” around so-called “gender-affirming care.” However, rather than separate the facts from the falsehoods, the article peddles lies and half-truths, assuming the conclusions it claims to prove in a thinly veiled piece of progressive propaganda. And that's about the nicest thing that can be said about it. The first dead giveaway about the piece is how it smuggles transgender ideology into its chosen language and terminology. Rather than refer to boys and girls, or young males and females, the author refers to “kids with testes” and “those with ovaries.” The piece then claims to set the record straight about what is involved in diagnosing gender dysphoria and administering “gender-affirming care.” Here, too, its claims could not be further from the truth. According to the author, “the process informing these treatments is a long and intensive one.” This directly conflicts with an increasing number of testimonies from whistleblowers and de-transitioners who sought out this kind of care, not to mention the information given by providers like Planned Parenthood. According to a whistleblower and former case manager at Washington University Transgender Center at St. Louis Children's Hospital, “[T]he majority” of young people who came to them “received hormone prescriptions.” Likewise, Helena Kirschner, a young woman who detransitioned, received testosterone as a teenager after her very first visit to Planned Parenthood. It's notable that Planned Parenthood doesn't even cover up this information. On some office webpages, the abortion giant happily promotes that “[i]n most cases your clinician will be able to prescribe hormones the same day as your first visit. No letter from a mental health provider is required.” Getting high-powered, life-altering drugs on your first visit hardly involves a “long and intensive” diagnosis process. The piece also falsely presents the effects of chemical “transition” interventions as reversible and harmless, peddling the lie that puberty blockers are like a “pause button” for puberty, which can be stopped and restarted with no long-term effect. Contrary to this claim, recent studies have found that the lasting adverse effects of the puberty-blocking drug Lupron, which is used to halt puberty primarily in young girls, include brittle bones and faulty joints. The piece also tries to soften the truth about cross-sex hormones by saying that some of their effects are reversible. However, changes caused in secondary sexual characteristics, such as deepened voices, facial hair, breast growth, and infertility are not reversible in the least. At the heart of most transgender propaganda is the claim that transitioning children has mental health benefits and can save them from suicide. Unsurprisingly, this piece repeats that claim while ignoring the facts that do not line up. The piece cites a popular but deeply flawed study among trans-advocates that those who received cross-sex hormones as minors had better mental health outcomes than those who received them as adults. However, the study's flawed design makes it impossible to sufficiently isolate cross-sex hormones, or lack thereof, as the determining factor of mental health outcomes. In fact, better research shows the opposite conclusion. For example, in states where youth were able to access chemical “transition” interventions without parental consent, youth suicide rates were higher than those who required parental consent. Additionally, the longest-term study on the effects of transitioning has found that those who transition are over 19 times more likely to commit suicide than the general population. Far from causing harm, denying irreversible and sterilizing chemical and surgical interventions actually helps children who are distressed by their bodies. Granted time and space, many learn to accept their bodies and God-given identities. However, propaganda pieces like this one published by CBS confuse those called to care for children and only contributes to their harm. If journalists and media outlets really want to dispel misinformation and help vulnerable children, they should stop blindly repeating the lies of gender ideologues. He insists that if we do not fix our food and change the way we eat, we will continue to court chronic disease, bankrupt healthcare, and threaten the planet. But there is hope: this book explains what's needed to fix all three. Listener Feedback SurveyAbout our Guest: Samuel Davila, M.D. is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics here at UT Southwestern. He completed both his pediatric infectious disease and critical care fellowships at Washington University at St. Louis Children's Hospital. He now is a practicing pediatric infectious disease specialist and intensivist at the UTSW/ Children's Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. His professional and research interests include cardiovascular infections, cardiac ECMO, and post heart transplant infections. I spend time doing handshake stewardship in the ICUs and committee work for hospital acquired conditions and infection prevention. Learning Objectives: By the end of this podcast, listeners should be able to: Define ventilator-associated conditions and infection-related ventilator-associated complications (IVAC). Recall the clinical characteristics and laboratory tests required to diagnose ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). Differentiate VAP from tracheitis. Recall the common or worrisome pathogens associated with VAP. Recall principles guiding empiric antibiotic selection for a patient with suspected VAP. Recognize the importance of antimicrobial stewardship in management of VAP and develop a strategy to limit unnecessary antibiotics (duration of therapy, strategies for narrowing coverage or discontinuing antibiotics if other diagnosis is more likely). Recognize when consultation with infectious disease is recommended in the management of VAP. It's Wednesday, February 15th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Pray for release of Mission Aviation Fellowship pilot Mission Aviation Fellowship is inviting Christians around the world to join today in prayer and fasting for the release of one of their pilots. Officials in Mozambique, Africa unlawfully detained 31-year-old Ryan Koher last November. The missionary pilot faces false charges and has been denied bail. He was on his way to fly supplies to orphanages in the country. Now, he has been separated from his wife, Annabelle, and their two sons for months. Annabelle shared some prayer requests in a video message. ANNABELLE: “As you're praying today, I ask that you would pray for Ryan to be comforted by the Lord, as he draws nearer to Him and studies His Word. Pray that God would use this time to grow and deepen Ryan's faith. “Pray that God would give Ryan the words to say to those he encounters, that they would hear the goodness of the Gospel, and see the peace of God in Ryan's life.” You can also send prayers and words of encouragement to PrayForPilotRyan@maf.org. The apostle Paul wrote from prison in Philippians 1:19, “I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance. Church of England greenlights blessings for sodomite couples Last Thursday, the general synod of the Church of England voted to authorize blessing ceremonies for homosexual couples. Between the House of Bishops, House of Clergy, and House of Laity, 56% of members voted in favor of the motion. Support for the motion was most pronounced in the House of Bishops, while opposition was most pronounced in the House of Laity. Ahead of the vote, synod member Luke Appleton called on the Church of England to return to God's standards. Listen. APPLETON: “How can it be right to say to the world that our doctrine is the marriage between one man and woman for life, in accordance with Cannon A5 and Matthew 19, and in the next breath be issuing prayers and liturgies inconsistent with that position? That is hypocrisy. That is below the standard that God calls us to.” Supreme Court reconsidering religious liberty case On Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court will consider accepting an appeal in a religious liberty case. Back in 2014, the City of Ocala, Florida held a public prayer vigil after a drive-by shooting left several children injured. Atheists claimed the move violated the First Amendment. They even received “offended observer” status from a district court. Abigail Southerland with the American Center for Law and Justice told The Epoch News, “This is the only area of law in which 'offended observer' status has been recognized by lower courts … the Supreme Court has indicated that offended observer standing is not sufficient standing to bring an Establishment Clause case or claim.” Missouri Attorney General investigating Pediatric Transgender Center Last Thursday, the Missouri Attorney General's Office confirmed it has launched an investigation into the Pediatric Transgender Center at St. Louis Children's Hospital. Officials are responding to a sworn affidavit from a former employee. She accuses the center of causing permanent harm to many children. Missouri's Republican Attorney General Andrew Bailey said, “We take this evidence seriously and are thoroughly investigating to make sure children are not harmed by individuals who may be more concerned with a radical social agenda than the health of children.” South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem bans sex-change surgeries for kids Meanwhile, South Dakota Republican Gov. Kristi Noem signed the “Help Not Harm” bill on Monday. The new law bans sex change surgeries and puberty blockers for children. And last week, two medical boards in Florida voted to expand prohibitions on chemical and genital mutilation of children. The vote closed a loophole that allowed colleges to give puberty blockers and transgender surgeries to students. Ohio train derailment threatens environment with spilled toxic chemicals Around 9 p.m. on Friday, February 3, a train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, a village of 4,700 residents 50 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, reported The New York Times. There were 150 cars on the route from Madison, Illinois, to Conway, Pennsylvania. The National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating, said on February 14 that 38 cars derailed and a fire ensued, which damaged another 12 cars. The train, operated by Norfolk Southern, had been carrying chemicals and combustible materials for the production of plastic and paint manufacturing. Vinyl chloride, a toxic flammable gas, is the one of primary concern to investigators. A huge fire erupted from the derailment, sending thick billowing smoke into the sky and over the town. Residents on both sides of the Ohio-Pennsylvania border were ordered to evacuate. Resident Melissa Henry told CBS News that she evacuated with her son. HENRY: “It smelled like really, really strong paint thinner and then his eyes turned, like bloodshot, and he started coughing and I was, like, ‘Yeah, we're leaving!'” The derailment has caused concerns about air, soil and water pollution. On February 10, the Environmental Protection Agency said that about 20 rail cars were reported to have been carrying hazardous materials Another local East Palestine, Ohio resident, Linda Murphy, expressed concern about dead fish in a number of different waterways. MURPHY: “There were several dead fish floating at multiple locations. That's what we bathe I, that's what we drink, that's what we cook with and they could not reassure me that the water was safe.” 65% of voters respect politician who sticks to his gov't And finally, a new survey by Summit Ministries found most Americans say they respect people who maintain their religious convictions despite cultural pressure. According to the study, 65% of voters have more respect for people who hold to their religious beliefs despite trends in the culture. This was true especially of Republicans (80%) and Independents (66%). Fifty percent of Democrats also respected religious conviction. Dr. Jeff Myers, President of Summit Ministries, said, “The cancel culture tells us we must give up our religious beliefs to fit in. But that's not how most Americans see it.” 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 says, “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Wednesday, February 15th in the year of our Lord 2023. Missouri's attorney general launched a multi-agency investigation into the Washington University Transgender Center at St. Louis Children's Hospital after a whistleblower alleged that the facility's practices are seriously harming children. Yesterday, Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey said that his office launched the probe into the “shocking allegations” made by whistleblower Jamie Reed, a self-described “queer,” leftist woman who worked as a case manager at the facility. Jamie Reed worked for the gender clinic. Red states are fighting back against the federal government today. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Gun Owners of America have filed a lawsuit against the ATF. This lawsuit will challenge Biden's ban on pistol braces. Tennessee is fighting back! The state Senate has passed a bill restricting where certain drag shows can take place. The legislation would expand the definition of adult cabaret in Tennessee's law to include such “adult-oriented performances that are harmful to minors” — as defined in Tennessee's obscenity law. The legislation then bans adult cabaret from taking place on public property or in a location where minors might be present. On Thursday, the GOP-led House passed a resolution blocking a bill that allows illegal immigrants to vote in local elections within Washington, D.C. Learn more about your ad choices. One of Lustig's singular gifts as a communicator is his ability to “connect the dots” for the general reader, in order to unpack the scientific data and concepts behind his arguments, as he tells the “real story of food” and “the story of real food.” Metabolical weaves the interconnected strands of nutrition, health/disease, medicine, environment, and society into a completely new fabric by proving on a scientific basis a series of iconoclastic revelations, among them: • Medicine for chronic disease treats symptoms, not the disease itself• You can diagnose your own biochemical profile • Chronic diseases are not "druggable," but they are "foodable" • Processed food isn't just toxic, it's addictive• The war between vegan and keto is a false war—the combatants are on the same side• Big Food, Big Pharma, and Big Government are on the other side Making the case that food is the only lever we have to effect biochemical change to improve our health, Lustig explains what to eat based on two novel criteria: protect the liver, and feed the gut. He insists that if we do not fix our food and change the way we eat, we will continue to court chronic disease, bankrupt healthcare, and threaten the planet. But there is hope: this book explains what's needed to fix all three. Dr. Lustig has become a leading public health authority on the impact sugar has on fueling the diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome epidemics, and on addressing changes in the food environment to reverse these chronic diseases. A native of Brooklyn, New York, graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received his M.D. from Cornell University Medical College. He completed his pediatric residency at St. Louis Children's Hospital, his clinical fellowship at UCSF, his post-doctoral fellow and research associate in neuroendocrinology at The Rockefeller University. He has been a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the University of Tennessee, Memphis. In 2013, Dr. Lustig received his Masters in the study of Law from University of California, Hastings to enable him to impact the food industry through policy change. Dr. Lustig has authored 125 peer-reviewed articles and 73 reviews. He has mentored 20 pediatric endocrine fellows, and trained numerous other allied health professionals. He provides endocrinologic support to several protocols of the Children's Oncology Group. He is the former Chairman of the Ad hoc Obesity Task Force of the Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society, a member of the Pediatric Obesity Practice Guidelines Subcommittee of The Endocrine Society, a member of the Obesity Task Force of the Endocrine Society, a member of the Pediatric Obesity Devices Committee of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, a member of the Bay Area Board of Directors of the American Heart Association, and a member of the Steering Committee of Health Foods, Healthy Kids of the Culinary Institute of America. He also consults for several childhood obesity advocacy groups. Dr. Lustig lives in San Francisco with his wife Julie and two daughters. Spare time (what little there is) is spent cooking, theater-going, and traveling. Are we eating too much or are we eating poorly? Fatty liver, a preventable diseaseIf the liver receives too much fructose it cannot handle its excess but how much is too much?. The liver turns sugar into fat and alcohol into fat. 45% of Americans have fatty liver disease. Eating cereal, juices, at breakfast injures the liver, as it takes the excess and converts it into fat.The Latino population has a higher risk of consuming sugar, being more vulnerable, becoming insulin resistant and developing Diabetes 2.We will share with Dr. Lustig graduated from MIT in 1976, and received his M.D. from Cornell University Medical College in 1980. He completed his pediatric residency at St. Louis Children's Hospital in 1983, and his clinical fellowship at UCSF in 1984. From there, he spent six years as a post-doctoral fellow and research associate in neuroendocrinology at The Rockefeller University. Author of the book Metabolical: The Lure and Lies of Processed Foods, Nutrition and Modern Medicine, Fat Chance, The Hacking of the American Mind . Dr. Lustig has authored over 85 peer-reviewed articles and 30 reviews. He has mentored 20 pediatric endocrine fellows, and trained numerous other allied health professionals. The effects of glucose and fructose.Glucose is the energy of life, it is so important that if it is not consumed, the body produces it. It is not necessary to consume it for life or in excess. People do not need fructose, since it is three times sweeter than glucose and can cause the same cirrhosis as alcohol.Fruit is good but fruit juice is another story. The food industry sells juice as fruit but they are not the same. Fruit juice is harmful because they are processed products, which lose their nutritional value.Sugar is not dangerous because of its calories or because it is fattening. It is not a food. When consumed in excess, it becomes an addictive toxin. Become your own health expert:To be aware of what we should do to take responsibility for our health it is important to take into account the following tests:- Abdominal circumference: it should be less than 101 in men and 88 in women. - ALT test, liver function test, the maximum limit should be 25 but it has gone from 25 to 40, since almost everyone has a fatty liver. - Uric acid test: indirect measure of protein and sugar intake. - Triglycerides in blood: They are a manifestation of the sugar in the organism. They indicate what the liver is doing in the body. It is a way of testing insulin resistance. - Fasting insulin: Insulin levels is not related to obesity, but to metabolic health, which is much more important. It is the most important test to doEating real food is what the population should be induced to eat.Two conditions that real food must have: protect the liver and feed the gut. This means having a diet low in sugar and high in fiber. The gut must be a barrier. When it becomes full of toxins, it becomes permeable, food is not processed well and passes into the bloodstream. Leaky Gut or intestinal hyper permeability has been linked to autoimmune diseases as well as the so common allergies to food an other environmental toxins.https://www.facebook.com/CocoMarchNMDhttps://www.instagram.com/cocomarch.nmd/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyT1tdUjfnbA-4Cqrz8BwFghttps://blog.dracocomarch.comhttps://store.dracocomarch.com/es/https://podcast.comocurar.com/

"In St. Louis, asthma is the greatest health care inequity, with African-American children having an incidence rate greater than 10x that of white children. Children in St. Louis are afflicted by rates of asthma 3x higher than that of the national average, and asthma is currently the leading chief complaint at St. Louis Children's Hospital. Underserved communities face a multitude of issues that exist beyond the medical aspects of health care. And unfortunately, asthma is not only an issue due to its accompanying signs and symptoms, but for its pertinence well beyond its pathology." Tejas Sekhar is a graduate student. Head and neck cancer is a group of various tumors located in the oral cavity, oropharynx, larynx, and hypopharynx. Head and neck cell squamous-cell carcinomas (HNSCC) often result from tobacco use or human papillomavirus (HPV+) infection. In locally advanced HNSCC, the current therapies used are combined surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Despite the use of traditional treatments, up to 50% of patients relapse due to the increase in mutational burden as HNSCC advances. Few studies have investigated the therapeutic potential of neoantigens in HNSCC tumors. “Prior work has characterized changes in the mutation burden between primary and recurrent tumors; however, little work has characterized the changes in neoantigen evolution.” Neoantigens are new proteins/antigens that form on cancer cells after mutations occur in the tumor DNA. Certain neoantigens can promote anti-tumor immune responses and are potentially capable of controlling tumor progression. In an effort to characterize genomic and neoantigen changes in patients with HNSCC, researchers—from Washington University in St. Louis, Columbia University, St. Louis Children's Hospital, and Siteman Cancer Center—investigated 23 paired primary and recurrent HNSCC tumors. Their paper, entitled, “Genomic and neoantigen evolution from primary tumor to first metastases in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma,” was chosen as the cover paper for Oncotarget's Volume 12, Issue #6. Although there seems to be evidence that infections with the omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 are somewhat milder, you wouldn't know that from the number of COVID-19 patients in the hospital. A post-holiday spike in cases has seen the number of inpatients at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and St. Louis Children's Hospital rise to levels higher than any seen since the pandemic began. In this episode, a pair of Washington University physicians report that because of the number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients, people with other ailments — from sports injuries to heart issues — are having to wait longer to be seen in the emergency department and for hospital beds to open up. Hilary M. Babcock, MD, a professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases and BJC Healthcare vice president and chief quality officer, says it's getting harder for the health-care system to keep up with the rising number of patients. Meanwhile, Jason G. Newland, MD, a professor of pediatrics in the Division of Infectious Diseases, says that even with the current surge, it's important to keep kids in school if at all possible. Both Babcock and Newland say that although breakthrough infections have occurred, vaccinations are keeping most people out of the hospital. Oncotarget published "Genomic and neoantigen evolution from primary tumor to first metastases in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma" which reported that prior work has characterized changes in the mutation burden between primary and recurrent tumors; however, little work has characterized the changes in neoantigen evolution. These authors characterized genomic and neoantigen changes between 23 paired primary and recurrent head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) tumors. Within these tumors, they identified 6 genes which have predicted neoantigens in 4 or more patients. Within HNSCC tumors examined in this Oncotarget research paper, there are neoantigens in shared genes by a subset of patients. The presence of neoantigens in these shared genes may promote an anti-tumor immune response which controls tumor progression. Dr. Brian A. Van Tine from The Washington University in St. Louis, The St. Louis Children's Hospital as well as The Siteman Cancer Center said, "Head and neck cancer are a group of heterogeneous tumors with an estimated 644,000 new cases per year worldwide." The infiltration of immune cells, including T cells, into tumors is associated with improved outcomes and longer survival in HNSCC. The infiltrating T cells release granules containing perforin and granzyme A and B which directly kill tumor cells or release other cytokines and chemokines that promote the anti-tumor immune response and alter the tumor microenvironment. For example, infiltrating T cells release interferon gamma which increases expression of PD-L1 and CTLA-4, which may increase the efficacy of immune checkpoint therapy. Multiple studies have characterized changes in mutation burden in HNSCC, when comparing primary and metastatic tumors, no studies have characterized the shifting neoantigen burden between primary and metastatic tumors within HNSCC. In this Oncotarget study, the authors characterized the mutational and neoantigen burden between primary and first recurrence tumors in 23 patients with HNSCC. The Van Tine Research Team concluded in their Oncotarget Research Output that there is a shifting neoantigen burden as there are unique neoantigens in primary tumors and different unique neoantigens in the recurrent/metastatic tumors. The patients which have these neoantigens in shared genes are patients which have higher total numbers of neoantigens. What is clear is that patients with neoantigens in these shared genes also tend to have increased duration of survival with disease. The increase in neoantigens and duration of survival with disease tends to be associated with increased CD3 CD8 density in the tumor and CD8A expression. This suggests that patients with these shared neoantigens are associated with increased CD8 T cell infiltration and increased cytotoxic activity, which extends the patient's life. At one time, newborns with diseased or absent kidneys had few options other than adult-sized dialysis machines. Today, aquapheresis therapy is a treatment option to provide renal support for neonates. In 2020, St. Louis Children's Hospital began using aquapheresis therapy to care for babies with congenital or acquired renal disorders, one of few centers in the country to offer this advanced treatment. Dr. Eileen Ciccia, Washington University pediatric nephrologist at St. Louis Children's Hospital, joins us to talk about renal disease in newborns, aquapheresis therapy, and its impact on NICU care.

Nick Reed talks about a variety of topics in the news, including: A St. Louis, Mo., family court judge, Nicole Zellweger, has launched an all-out judicial assault on Angela Freiner and her minor daughter, who are refusing her order to make the 14-year-old girl return to the man who she says sexually molested her. You can read more here. Evita Tolu is representing Angela Freiner. Tolu has filed a lawsuit against family court guardian ad litem (GAL) Elaine Pudlowski, psychologist James Reid, and clinical social worker Jennifer Webbe VanLuven, alleging that the trio conspired to use her custody dispute as an opportunity to get rich while sentencing her children to life with an abuser. The lawsuit alleges a scheme perpetrated by a group of professionals to drain parents involved in custody battles. At the end of the court process, parents are broke and kids are traumatized while GALs, court-appointed psychologists, and therapists are enriched. Tolu says the scheme kept her in court for three years, drained her bank account, and alienated her children from her. The suit alleges that this pattern is a regular family court occurrence when Pudlowski is involved. 31 Missouri Judges have recused themselves from hearing the lawsuit. You can read more here. Freiner sent an impassioned email to Zellweger after the court jailed her for two days and incarcerated her daughter in the mental ward at St. Louis Children's Hospital for refusing Zellweger's order to go quietly with her father. She was then arrested and jailed AGAIN after sending the email.
