Now that my daughter is two-and-a-half years old, I am approaching when I need to potty train her. From my years of experience working with families, I know that each child is different, and potty training your child might look a bit different from how I potty train mine, and that's okay! Potty training can be a challenging process for some children and smooth for others. I was lucky enough to have an easy experience with my son, but I am preparing for anything with my daughter. That's why I'm chatting with my guest today, Arin Schultz. He has four boys and knows a thing or two about potty training. In this episode, we share our potty training experiences with our kids, potty training tips, what to keep in mind, and how we got started. If you want a good laugh and some relatable information on potty training, this episode is for you! Who is Arin Schultz? Arin is the VP of Sales and Marketing at Naturepedic and has over nine years of experience in the organic mattress industry. Since 2003, Naturepedic has been on a mission to transform the lives of its customers through safer, healthier sleep and top-of-the-line baby and children's products. By eliminating materials like flame retardants and polyurethane foam from their line of certified organic natural mattresses, Naturepedic supports an organic, holistic lifestyle while protecting the environment. What Did We Discuss? In this episode, we chat with Arin all about potty training! Here are several of the questions that we covered: What were your potty training experiences like with your four boys? Which potty training readiness signs did your kids exhibit? When do you believe a parent should start the potty training process? With your experience, what do you think is the best way to get started with potty training? We know that children vary developmentally and in temperament. Do you think the potty training process varies based on each child? What are some products that can help with potty training? What about nighttime potty training? Where does this fit into the training process, and how can parents integrate it into their routine? What are your top potty training tips & tricks? What is one piece of advice you would like to give parents about to embark on potty training their child? Episode Notes We talked about several products during this episode. Do you know what's hiding in your mattress? It might be more than you think! We spend up to one-third of our lives on our mattress, so this is a topic I really wanted to talk about on the podcast, and today's expert guest has a lot of good information to share. Barry A. Cik is founder and Technical Director of Naturepedic, a manufacturer of award-winning certified organic mattresses. His devotion to the organic industry is the natural result of his lifelong interest in preserving the environment, not only for us, but for all future generations as well. A board-certified environmental engineer, Barry combines his passion for improving our quality of life with the technical knowledge to do so. Barry is an advocate for legislative reform, and was invited to testify in Washington, D.C. as part of a congressional subcommittee exploring chemical reform. Barry is also a frequent speaker and thought leader, speaking before scientific, consumer, political and business audiences on the benefits of sustainable product design. His background in environmental engineering led Barry to chart his own successful entrepreneurial course for many years. When shopping for his first grandchild's crib mattress, he was troubled to discover the state of the baby mattress industry. From that moment, Barry was inspired and determined to create mattress products that were safer and healthier for every child. Working in tandem with his sons, Barry established Naturepedic in 2003. Barry continues to work hard, both for the parents that depend on Naturepedic's No-Compromise approach to safer sleep and for the generations that will inherit the sustainability movement. He believes in a healthier world without harmful chemicals, environmental toxins, or destructive business practices. I admit, this is something that I didn't give much thought to before speaking with Barry, but what he revealed completely changed the way I think about healthy sleep, and I hope it does for you too! But what happens if a mammogram identifies dense breast tissue? Nearly half of women aged 40 and over who have mammograms are told they have dense breasts, which can increase risk of breast cancer. For women with the densest breasts, the risk for breast cancer can be four to six times higher than women with the least dense breasts. “If you're human, or an animal of any kind, you are at risk for lead poisoning,” says Tamara Rubin, owner of Lead Safe Mama, LLC, whose mission became educating people on the danger of lead poisoning after her own sons were acutely poisoned when they were very young. Unfortunately, there are many barriers to the awareness of lead poisoning. For one thing, there is what Tamara calls “generational amnesia,” wherein the impact of lead has not been continuously communicated, so many people don't think it's a problem any longer. Or, they think it only affects children, and moreover, only children who eat paint chips. Another major factor is that many companies who benefit from the use of lead also control large swaths of the media, and won't allow information that might affect their sales to be known to the public. It's alarming to hear Tamara discuss how much lead contamination there is and where it can be found. Lead paint is still used in many industrial settings including the machines that manufacture our food. It also exists in high levels in the many vintage and heirloom items that are so popular to incorporate into buildings and homes. It's even in some of the supposedly healthy foods we eat. Still, there is plenty that moms can do to protect themselves and their children, from getting tested to creating a safe environment and shopping smarter. Join Sasha and Tamara as they discuss methods of eliminating lead that's already in the body, the myriad ways in which we are exposed to lead in the first place, and why where you live affects not only how much lead you're exposed to, but whether or not a doctor will test you for it. Quotes • “My goal is to make science-based information freely available to parents everywhere so that they can make informed choices to protect their families.” (8:25-8:37 | Tamara) • “You do have to worry about the paint applied to your home if your home was built before 1978.” (17:53-17:59 | Tamara) • ‘It's trendy to repurpose building materials so you might find bricks from a factory that was torn down in the 1800s being used as an aesthetic curiosity while in a new building.” (23:25-23:37 | Tamara) • “I want moms to know that it's not hopeless, that you're going to do fine.”(54:41-54:47 | Tamara) • “Unfortunately, pediatricians are racially profiling people and demographically profiling people, so you are more likely to be offered a blood lead test if you are a person of color, or if you are low income.” (56:42-56:57 | Tamara) Stats • “According to reports by UNICEF in partnership with Pure Earth, a global nonprofit, lead exposure is particularly dangerous to children under five whose bodies absorb lead much more efficiently than adults, and are at greatest risk of developing lifelong physical and cognitive damage.”(0:18-0:38 | Sasha) • “Childhood lead exposure has also been linked to aggression, hyperactivity and other behavioral problems.” (0:38-0:45 | Sasha) • “The report finds that one in three children, that's around 800 million worldwide, have blood lead levels at or above five milligrams per deciliter, a level considered cause for intervention by the Center for Disease Control and Intervention.” (0:46-1:03 | Sasha) • “The 1978 ban on lead paint limited lead to 600 parts per million in paint, and then later, the new legislation limited lead in paint to 900 parts per million, and paint today is lead-free.” (17:28-17:40 | Tamara) • “It wasn't until 2008 that we outlawed lead in toys.” (19:38-19:44 | Tamara) • “There's a study done by Dr. Rubido who found that even a blood lead level as low as 0.43 can have negative outcomes related to it, as well as conception issues and fertility issues.” (27:22-27:36 | Tamara) • “It only takes a microscopic amount of lead to poison a human, so you don't actually have to eat a chip's worth of paint to be poisoned.” (34:12-34:19 | Tamara) • “One sugar packet worth of lead dust distributed evenly across a football field is enough to contaminate a football field to 38 micrograms of lead dust per square foot. (34:34-34:48 | Tamara) • “The amount of dust that's considered toxic in children right now is ten micrograms. So that's one quarter of a sugar packet of lead dust spread across a football field is enough to poison children.” (34:53-35:05 | Tamara) • “If you were born before 1996, you likely have lead exposure that is far above what younger people today have, because lead in gasoline wasn't outlawed until 1996.” (38:40-38:58 | Tamara) • “One in three kids under the age of 18 in the United States today has had a blood lead level of 2.5 or higher in their lifetime. So, that's 22 million children. 30 percent of kids.” (45:41-46:05 | Tamara) • “Your oldest child will have the most lead from your body because you have the highest cellular turnover of your childhood exposure with your first pregnancy, and each child after that should have less of your body burden of lead from your own childhood.” (53:46-54:00 | Tamara) • “Medical interventions aren't recommended unless a child's blood lead level is 40 or 50 micrograms per deciliter.” (1:05:00-1:05:08 | Tamara) • “The amount of lead that's toxic in items intended for children and illegal today is anything over 90 parts per million in the glaze and anything over 100 parts per million in the substrate. Brass tends to be 30,000 to 40,000 parts per million lead.” (1:26:24-1:26:56 | Tamara) • “Chocolate is the food item that has the most lead in it because it is one of the most processed food items, and it is one of the least regulated and it comes from so many different places.”(1:27:59-1:28:12 | Tamara) Notable links: Connect with Tamara Rubin: Website: www.LeadSafeMama.com ***Join Tamara's newsletter mailing list at the link below to receive a chance to win a Naturepedic organic mattress and bedding once they've reached 10,000 subscribers. https://tamararubin.com/subscribe-to-the-lead-safe-mama-blog/ IG: https://www.instagram.com/leadsafemama/ FB: https://www.facebook.com/LeadSafeMama Twitter: https://twitter.com/LeadSafeMama TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@leadsafemama_official YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCu_5hgOXzK-qJYEE9xx7Bhw Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/LeadSafeMamas/ Subscribe to our Mailing List: www.TheOfficialMomologist.com Connect with The Momologist™: https://www.instagram.com/theofficialmomologist/ https://www.facebook.com/TheOfficialMomologist ------ The Momologist™ is a production of The Reel Media Group. Barry Cik, owner of Naturepedic, an organic mattress company in northeast Ohio and a member of the American Sustainable Business Network, said businesses understand a functioning economy relies on a functioning democracy, which, he emphasized, requires citizen involvement. "If I may be a little bit harsh, we can't just trust government to do the right thing," Cik contended. "We need citizen participation. We want a society where everybody's treated equal, everybody has a chance to succeed. Voting rights is one part of that." The bill defeated in the Senate would have established minimum federal voting standards. It was a response to dozens of bills passed in GOP-controlled states Democrats argued were designed to make it harder to vote. Some Senate Republicans are now discussing launching a bipartisan effort to pass a smaller bill focused on safeguarding election results and protecting elected officials from harassment. Thomas Oppel, executive vice president of the American Sustainable Business Network, said measures restricting access to the ballot can lead to an autocratic government favoring special interests and limiting entrepreneurship. "If people don't have confidence in their government, you're going to end up with 'crony capitalism,'" Oppel asserted. "Where it's not about your ability to deliver a quality product or deliver a better price. It's about who you know, what connections you have, and how much corruption and graft you're willing to put up with." Oppel believes creating more opportunities to vote is helpful for small businesses. "Most businesses in this country are small businesses and in many cases, they operate with very few employees," Oppel pointed out. "If you're a small-business person, it can be really hard for you to get away from your enterprise to go vote yourself, let alone making sure your employees get there and vote." With Halloween coming this weekend and the holidays quickly approaching, I think now is a good time to talk about ways to prevent food waste. Pumpkins are the universal symbol of autumn and are a popular decor item in millions of households. In fact, according to the USDA, an estimated 2 billion pounds of pumpkins are grown in the United States each year, and about two thirds are trashed rather than being eaten or composted. Keeping food out of the landfill is crucial to fighting climate change. You see, when Halloween pumpkins and other food waste makes it to the landfill, they release methane gas, a harmful greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. In this episode I'll be talking about a few ways in which we can put those Halloween pumpkins to good use and prevent food waste in general. We're also going to be hearing from Elise Smith, a black woman who is the founder of Winnie's Bakery. When baking delicious treats for Winnie's Bakery, Elise strives to use sustainable ingredients and prefers to buy local, organic, and fairly-sourced goods as often as possible. Elise will be sharing some tips about how to reduce food waste in the kitchen later on in the show. It's becoming very apparent that climate change is real and immediate. For example, this past summer, there were record-breaking heat waves and droughts in the Western part of the US. Hurricane Henry made its way to New York, causing record rainfall and flooding of the city. Last winter there was a freak snow storm and extreme cold weather causing power outages for over a week in Texas. And last year California experienced record breaking wildfires. To be exact, 5 out of California's 10 worst fires happened in 2020. At this point, there's no doubt that climate change is real and immediate as the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere rises, the temperature of the earth also rises. Of course, the temperature of the earth has always fluctuated, but the rate at which it has risen in the last 200 years is significantly high. While climate change will affect every living being on this planet in one way or another, according to an article published by Princeton University titled Racial Disparities and Climate Change, it says, “Climate change disproportionately affects those who suffer from socioeconomic inequalities, including many people of color”. In today's episode, I talk about how communities of color are among the first and hardest hit by the effects of climate change. We've all heard that slogan, right? “Reduce, reuse, recycle”. These are known as the 3R's of waste management or sustainability, but there are several more Rs that can be considered when trying to limit your waste and avoid sending unnecessary trash to the landfill. Although there isn't a formal consensus on which Rs are the true frontrunners of sustainability, or even how many should be included, I've chosen 8Rs that I think should be considered in an eco-friendly lifestyle. Today's episode is all about how to keep our sleeping babies safe and to focus on the breathability of crib mattresses. Our babies' safety is our greatest priority, and breathability in crib mattresses may not seem like too big of a deal, but it's more important than parents think. And Barry Cik, the Founder and Technical Director of Naturepedic, knows this all too well. We're thrilled to have Barry back on our podcast to talk about some of the biggest risks and dangers involved with infant sleep, why breathability is an important feature in crib mattresses, as well as what to look for when purchasing a crib mattress. A little bit about Barry—he has had a lifelong interest in preserving the environment, not only for us but for all future generations. As a board-certified environmental engineer, Barry advocates for legislative reform and has four decades of experience investigating and assessing hazardous materials/contamination, resolving environmental problems, and protecting human health, safety, and the environment. We couldn't think of a better guest to talk about this important topic since Barry has such a wealth of knowledge and experience. Our babies spend such a significant amount of time in their cribs, so it's important to discuss this topic. We're honored to have Barry back on the show and get into all of the details regarding keeping your sleeping baby safe. Are you sleeping with the enemy? In this episode, we go undercover – literally – by taking a deep dive into what’s lurking in your mattress and explore the HEATED topic of flame retardants (FRs). After his grandchild was born, Barry A. Cik was fed up with the toxicity of crib mattresses while discovering that the majority of them are made of polyurethane foam and treated with flame retardant chemicals that are linked to endocrine disruption, lowered IQ, hyperactivity, altered sexual development, fertility issues, thyroid dysfunction, and cancer. Barry did what any board-certified environmental engineer and concerned grandfather would do, he founded his own certified organic mattress company, Naturepedic. Barry reveals natural alternatives to toxic flame retardants, the current laws around FRs, common sources of exposure, and the negative health impacts from dangerous chemical fire retardants. He leaves us with practical tips to avoid exposure in our daily lives.
Are you getting enough quality, healthy sleep? According to the CDC, more than 80 million American adults are chronically sleep-deprived. But most people ignore the materials they’re sleeping on 8 hours a night. Turns out, your mattresses can be host to toxic contaminants that can have negative health consequences by exposing your body to chemicals linked to cancer, fertility problems, hormone disruption, and more. Our special guest, Barry Cik, the founder and Technical Director of Naturepedic, a manufacturer of award-winning certified organic mattresses, sheds light on the difference between an organic mattress and a conventional mattress. He advises tips to avoid getting greenwashed, how most baby mattresses are loaded with chemicals and how to avoid toxic flame retardant chemicals. Barry breaks down the proper certifications to seek when shopping for a healthy mattress. Plus, ENTER NOW for a chance to win your own certified organic Naturepedic mattress valued up to $3,599.00!

Hello and welcome back to green living podcast. This week's guest is Morgan Finley. Morgan is the owner of Viren Apothecary, focusing on formulating low-waste home care for green cleaning without compromise. Viren products were born from her personal refusal to compromise between eco-friendly ingredients, fine fragrances and sparkling surfaces. In our conversation we chat about how viren apothecary came about, her most challenging product to make, fragrances in products, and a lot more. A few weeks after recording this episode I ordered her all purpose cleaner (white tea and pear) its heavenly smelling and scouring scrub (unscented). If you follow me on instagram then you might have seen me use them and they are absolutely amazing! I know a lot of people like to DIY their own cleaners which is great, however if you are not one of those people and or are just starting out and wanting eco friendly products while having the convenience of having it pre made I highly recommend her products. While recording this episode Morgan had her dogs around her so if you hear snoring or noises that is probably them. https://virenapothecary.patternbyetsy.com -------------- Support GLP: Patron: https://www.patreon.com/greenlivingpodcast Pay pal: https://paypal.me/greenlivingpodcast?locale.x=en_US Purusha People: https://purushapeople.com/?ref=f-9h30_9FVDAK 10% off purusha people: greenlivingpodcast EarthHero (affilaite link to curated product page) https://earthhero.com/product-category/green-living-podcast/?ref=greenlivingpodcast 10% off coupon code: GREENLIVINGPOD [not case sensitive, can't be used on sale items, can't be paired with other coupons, can't be used on Gift Cards, TerraCycle boxes, Zeal Optics, or Naturepedic products] Pela: https://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=1216646&u=2617114&m=81303&urllink=&afftrack= Girlfriend: https://girlfriend-store.myshopify.com/?rfsn=4869028.558b1de Green Living Podcast: https://greenlivingpod.com Instagram: @greenlivingpod Youtube: greenlivingpod

Hello and welcome back to Green Living Podcast. This week I read some correspondence that I had with EarthHero and I talk about fast fashion. I have been in contact with Juliet Payne from EarthHero, I asked her some questions for the podcast and she gave me some wonderfully insightful answers. For the bulk of this episode I talk about fast fashion in regards to its harm on the planet, physiological stress, and ways to combat it. Anticipating his first grandchild, Barry Cik shopped for a suitable crib mattress. However, as a board-certified environmental engineer with eco-friendly preferences, Barry was surprised to learn that most bedding manufacturers used harmful chemicals and materials. This inspired Barry to leverage his background in environmental engineering to create the safest mattress products possible for various price points. Thus, Naturepedic, an industry-leading organic mattress manufacturer, was formed. This podcast teaches you about the key components that are often sources of toxic exposures in conventional mattresses. These components are also commonly used in many other home furnishings—like sofas, high chairs, dining chairs, carpets, stuffed animals, nursing pillows, and more. So, if you're interested in sustainable interior design, creating an eco-friendly home, improving your indoor air quality, and decreasing your body burden from toxic chemicals, then this podcast will help with all those things. Choosing a crib mattress may not sound like a big deal, but it’s more important than parents think. Today, I have the pleasure of chatting with Barry Cik, the Founder and Technical Director of Naturepedic, a manufacturer of award-winning certified organic mattresses. Barry knows all too well the important decision of choosing the right crib mattress for your baby. Years ago when Barry was shopping for his first grandchild’s crib mattress, he was troubled to discover the state of the baby mattress industry. From that moment, Barry was inspired and determined to create mattress products that are safer and healthier for every child. And he was the perfect person to do so. (Others agree! Check out this Mattress Still Mattress report!) Barry has had a lifelong interest in preserving the environment, not only for us, but for all future generations. As a board-certified environmental engineer, Barry is an advocate for legislative reform and has four decades of experience investigating and assessing hazardous materials/contamination, resolving environmental problems, and protecting human health, safety, and the environment. When he discovered the alarming materials used in the majority of crib mattresses, he knew he could do better. And that’s how Naturepedic was born in 2003. Today’s episode is about the important decision of choosing your child’s crib mattress. Barry is sharing with us how and why crib mattresses play a part in safe sleep, the history of safe sleep, what parents should look for when choosing a crib mattress, and what he wants all parents to know. He has a wealth of knowledge and we are honored to have him on our show.
