In this episode of the First Day Podcast, host Bill Stanczykiewicz, Ed.D. is joined by Angelica Suarez, a seasoned advisor at Resilia specializing in nonprofit capacity building. The discussion centers on the crucial practice of relationship-based fundraising in higher education and beyond. Angelica defines this approach as shifting from transactional to transformational relationships, where nonprofits and donors collaborate to create lasting impact. She emphasizes the importance of genuine human connections amidst the distractions and fast-paced nature of modern nonprofit work, drawing from her extensive experience in both coaching nonprofits and leading fundraising efforts herself. Angelica underscores the common pitfalls nonprofits face in prioritizing tasks over relationships, highlighting her own past mistakes and those she's observed in her coaching role. She advocates for fundraisers to start by understanding themselves and their attitudes towards relationships and money, suggesting introspective exercises to overcome barriers to effective donor engagement. Angelica shares practical strategies for fostering meaningful connections, such as active listening, personalizing interactions based on donor interests, and demonstrating genuine appreciation beyond financial contributions. She encourages fundraisers to balance organizational goals with the quality of donor relationships, navigating pressures for quick results by staying true to core values of stewardship and genuine connection.

Andrea Ortega, the Founder and CEO of Palante Nonprofits, has structured her company to aid nonprofit organizations with strategic planning, offering implementation guidance and customized training programs in English and Spanish. In a conversation with May Harris, Esq., MA, Andrea will explore various topics, including transitioning grassroots nonprofits into scalable entities. Maintaining a strategic plan that is both visionary and realistic is of utmost importance. The efficacy of your nonprofit's strategy can be assessed by the data collected to support it, indicating whether your goals have been achieved. With advancements in technology, there are now tools available to assist nonprofits. AI can even aid in crafting strategic plans, while Google provides tools to keep your team updated in real time. Stay tuned for this timely and crucial information pertinent to your nonprofit endeavors. IN THIS EPISODE: [1:23] Andrea shares how she came to the nonprofit space and who her clients are [4:49] Discussion of how to scale a grassroots nonprofit [7:26] Andrea discussed how she begins to work with clients [11:27] Discussion of using AI to assist in writing a strategic plan but also knowing how to collect and use data [13:32] Obstacles that Andrea sees as she advises Boards and discussion of the timelines for strategic plans [20:49] Using Google tools is a way for a team to view the dashboard and decide what data to collect [24:51] Training should be a part of your organizational culture, and sharing documents and ideas with other nonprofits is beneficial [31:39] Andrea stresses that you should make space on your meeting agenda to cover your strategic plan, and she reminds nonprofits to have a realistic vision KEY TAKEAWAYS: [2:12] Professionals working in the nonprofit space generally exist because of a personal connection or passion. [12:22] You can create a beautiful plan to present to funders, but you also need a way, by collecting data, to measure success. [13:18] Staying on a mission is critical for a nonprofit to meet its goals and objectives. Nonprofits make a mistake when they stray away from its strategic plan. Today we're excited to welcome to the show Sevetri Wilson the Founder and CEO of Resilia, the company nonprofit leaders say they can't live without. Resilia is revolutionizing how nonprofits are created and maintained, and how cities, private foundations, and corporations scale impact. Named a Rising Star on the Forbes Cloud 100 List, featured in Inc. Magazine's 100 Female Founders building world-changing companies, recipient of the Nobel Prize for Public Service and a #1 Seller on Amazon for her book “Solid Ground: How I Built a 7 Figure Company at 22 with Zero Capital” Sevetri Wilson is a disrupter with a conscience. Sevetri joins us to give a master class in building a multi-million dollar tech platform with a human touch. By harnessing the power of generosity, technology, and human connection Resilia is making nonprofit leadership available to everyone and making a place at the table for Black female founders in the mostly male-dominated world of tech. https://www.sevetriwilson.com/ https://www.resilia.com/
Sevetri Wilson is the Founder and CEO of New Orleans based technology startup Resilia (formerly ExemptMeNow) with a second office in Newark that she founded in 2015 to revolutionize how nonprofits are created and maintained, and how enterprises (who deploy billions annually) scale impact. She has raised over $2M for her startup to date, making her the first Black woman in New Orleans to raise over $1M in venture capital, and one of only 11 black women to raise over $3M.
Serial entrepreneur Sevetri Wilson started her first business at 23 after losing her parents and bootstrapped it to seven figures with zero capital.
But it is really important that you go beyond just the Google of googling cybersecurity courses, speak to someone, make sure it's right for you. Because there's nothing worse than investing in training, finishing the course and working out that wasn't what I was looking for. So invest that time upfront, speak to someone that's got lots on offer, because it means they won't push you into one course. But specifically, I'd say that RESILIA frontline is very strong, and a good option to take care of, you know, all staff at all levels.
Proggy Boys in Resilia take over the podcast and share a wealth of information! JOEY HOLIDAY makes a guest appearance!
Sevetri Wilson is a serial entrepreneur and founder at Resilia, a New Orleans based technology startup that helps nonprofit organizations increase capacity and enable enterprises that deploy billions of dollars scale their impact. She was honored with the National Nobel Prize for Public Service for Public Service, the Jefferson Award, and was featured in the senate report to the White House on volunteerism during the Obama administration. Sevetri chat’s with Will Lucas about how non-profits scale their impact and transition from traditional fundraising for survival to business models that prioritize value exchange.
Hear how to make sure donations have an impact Sevetri Wilson, serial entrepreneur and founder of two highly successful companies, had a purpose and a passion. She wanted to make a difference, in the world and in people's lives. In our podcast today, she will tell you how she had to rethink her future and move in directions she had never anticipated, always helping others. Maybe your life has followed similar paths? I know you'll find Sevetri’s story and the work she is doing very inspirational, as I did. Listen and enjoy! Dedicated to giving back and getting it done Following college, Sevetri Wilson landed at Louisiana CASA, an organization that helps secure safe and permanent homes for abused and neglected children. As she was creating campaigns to lobby for support of children, people started seeing her as someone could help start or support other foundations or nonprofits. Sensing a bigger need for her talents, she expanded her scope to creating core communications for other organizations while helping them develop partnerships, give back to their communities, and deliver what their donors were expecting. Soon, Sevetri was a powerhouse in New Orleans, with more to come. Did you know that nonprofits are one of the largest industries in the US? In 2016, non-profit organizations employed 12.3 million people, approximately 1 in 10 jobs in the private sector. Today, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the economic recession are causing serious challenges to these organizations at the very time that their services are most in demand. Moreover, funders are unclear about how to get their monies to the right organizations so their funds can have the most impact, today and tomorrow. Making "collective impact" happen To help fill the gap between funders' expectations and nonprofits' performance, as well as establish transparency and accountability, Sevetri formed Resilia in 2016, a New Orleans-based technology startup dedicated to: 1) simplifying the creation and maintenance of nonprofit organizations, 2) helping donors match their funding with the right nonprofits, and 3) making sure that funding actually goes to the programs the donors intend it to. With Resilia, donors can now follow the progress of their financial support, ensuring that the nonprofits they're giving to have the resources they need to make real change happen, and to make that change stick. Called collective impact, it's a 360-degree approach to change, with everyone pushing for the same goal at the same time. During this current time of dual crises — the pandemic and economic devastation — collective impact is precisely what Sevetri and her organization are making happen. While nationwide collective efforts are pushing recovery programs forward, Resilia enables the organizations carrying out those programs to measure their effectiveness and see the impact they're having on people's lives and communities. A true win-win, with impact far beyond today. In the second half of Cheryl’s conversation with Suzanne Fawley, Suzanne breaks down her first furniture design for Stance Healthcare, which won the Resilia/HD Nightingale Award. Suzanne shares, “Resilia offers the same cylinder shape table that is often seen in the industry, however, the surround is made out of forbo marmoleum which is an asbestos free flooring. You can’t pick at it and pull it apart or make it into a weapon. So it is very safe.” This and more on the intricacies of furniture built specifically for the behavioral health setting, and offered by Stance Healthcare. Learn more about Suzanne Fawley and Stance Healthcare by visiting: http://www.stancehealthcare.com This podcast is brought to you by the award-winning Porcelanosa—a global innovator in tile, kitchen and bath products. Learn more about Porcelanosa by visiting https://www.porcelanosa.com/. --- Let’s play a game. I want you to count up every time you’ve had furniture delivered on a hospital or healthcare project, and the product fell short of your expectations. Do that on one hand. Now, on the other hand, I want you to count up how many times you’ve had to compromise the integrity of a project because you’ve been limited by furniture options and budget. Now, that was kind of a trick question because I know all of you need more than two hands to count up these situations. Here’s a solution: Stance Healthcare. Stance specializes in furniture for the hospital and healthcare setting, and they pride themselves on working with designers who need to modify furniture for a variety of end users. Here’s a great example. At the request of a designer, Stance modified their popular Legend chair to create a closed arm panel and they made the seat depth adjustable for different sized residents in an assisted living facility. How freaking cool is that? Start exploring now at: http://stancehealthcare.com/. In part two of Cheryl’s conversation today with Suzanne Fawley, you will learn: The definition of Experiential Design and how without it, critical aspects of a patient-centered design are oftentimes overlooked. Suzanne’s first furniture design for Stance Healthcare won the Resilia/HD Nightingale Award. Learn what makes this product line unique to behavioral health design requirements. The details about Suzanne’s second furniture line--Frontier--for Stance Healthcare. Why in mental health and behavioral health design, you don’t have to have augmented, enlarged furniture everywhere. Research has shown that lower beds in patient rooms can be more dangerous. Frontier’s fluid management system is highly specialized for behavioral health design. The versatility and benefits of Frontier’s furniture is explained in detail by Suzanne. Suzanne and Stance Healthcare’s participation in Broughton Hospital project in Morganton, NC and the results of the mixed use facility over the seven year timeline of the project. Stance’s proprietary 3-Way Clean Sweep which allows for housekeeping staff to thoroughly check for contraband and other possible areas where patients can hide items. Stance Healthcare’s position as a smaller furniture manufacturer allows them to be more malleable in creating custom furniture for various end users. Why furniture for Behavioral Health design is not a one size fits all approach. Suzanne’s advice to other designers who don’t have behavioral health design experience. A Solution for Every Challenge Introducing Steve Goddard and Resilia Medical Solutions Everyone remembers having an unfortunate urinary accident when they were young. Not only is it uncomfortable, but also embarrassing. Most of us grow past these challenges as we learn to better control our bladders. However, some women can be reacquainted to this problem many years down the line and through no fault of their own. One in five women experience urinary incontinence stemming from motherhood, age, etc. Currently, the only solutions are surgical in extreme circumstances, or some sort of pad or diaper. However, today's Boiling Point guest, Steve Goddard, is the CEO of a company with another discrete solution. Steve is the CEO of Resilia Medical Solutions and his company's product Uresta is a small item made of medical grade plastic, which is inserted into the vagina and applies pressure to a woman's urethra and blocks the passage of unwanted urine. The product was developed by Dr. Scott Farrell, an Urogynaecologist from Dalhousie University when he noticed that most of his patients who suffered from FUI were not in need of a surgical solution, but didn't have a good solution to their problem. This problem is not just a stigma or quality of life issue; its health effects can be spiraling. Check out this episode to see how there is a solution for every problem if you take the time to fix it. In this episode We hear about Steve's past life in banking and with JDI. Steve tells us why he took the leap into entrepreneurship after leaving JDI and about the companies he helped to start. Greg and Dave are made to guess what Resilia's product is. Steve explains how this product is an evolution of a device that has been used for hundreds of years. We also hear how venture capitalists reacted to the product versus individual investors. We learn that it can take up to seven years for a woman to speak to a doctor about their FUI. Steve tells us why the problem of FUI is not just a quality of life issue or a stigma and how it can seriously affect a woman's mental and physical health. Greg is impressed by the fact that when people come across challenges there is always someone out looking for the solution Dave notes that every business has that “big domino” that when it drops great things follow.
