There Is No Secret #264

Celtfather Music & Travel

And the secret is... There is no secret with a mind like mine. It's show #264 of The Celtfather. I was kicking myself recently that I was having so much trouble creating my shownotes for the Pub Songs Podcast. There are too many working parts for my brain. There's the pub chat, the live streaming, the story in the middle, all the news. Then it struck me. Never in the history of that podcast have I stuck to a consistent format. That's not what that show is all about. Every episode can be different. And that's okay. That's the same for my life. Every day is different. Yes. Some are more alike than others. But mostly, my days vary. This podcast has a more solid format. So let's start talking about how things went and where things are goin. 1:03 - PODCASTS In June, I featured an interview I did with Mazz O'Flaherty. That interview is in THIS podcast. I will cross-post some of the interviews I do to this podcast. If they seem relevant. It's more promotion for the people I interview. So mo the bettah. I was on target with two episodes of the Pub Songs Podcast. The first had an interview with Gerry O'Beirne. He's an Irish singer/songwriter who performed on last year's Celtic Invasion of Dingle. I played Famous Irish Songs in between those previously mentioned moving parts. In the second episode, I talk about the castle I booked for the Celtic Invasion of Scotland in 2021. Do you listen to Stories from the Road? Just curious. I stayed on top of it. And I even felt like they were pretty interesting thoughts, including "Performing in the time of Covid-19" and the "Litmus Test for a Coffee Pre-Show". I'm about a week ahead with the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. The Pride Show did very well. As has the podcast this month. The show is back up to over 11k downloads in about a week's time. It had sunk to about 8000 earlier this year. I don't have any special episodes currently planned. That's allowing me to get ahead. But I do have ideas. I also feel like I need to reach out to more bands. There's not a lot of new music coming. I'm not sure that is normal for this time of year. Admittedly, I never care because I'm usually overseas. Mikey and I recorded a new In the ‘Verse podcast. It still needs editing. But the song for the final episode of Firefly, "My Beating Heart", was released to the Gunn Runners Club too. 4:22 - VIDEOS June was NOT the month of videos. In fact, this was another situation where I thought, it's okay if I'm inconsistent with video production. I did a benefit concert for Andrew McKee's Life's a Faire podcast and video series. We raised a few hundred dollars. I released a video of "Tough Times". Its done remarkably well as my video singles are concerned. There's a short Fairy Walk video I made for Inara's birthday. It took a month to get it out. But it was fun. And finally, I uploaded a Coffee with the Celtfather episode where I celebrated the songs of Rie Sheridan Rose. That turned out pretty dang good as a performance. That won't be a regular thing. But I thought it'd be nice to promote the songs that I wrote with Rie. So I'm going all out. In fact, the next Pub Songs Podcast is largely that show. 6:47 - IN THE STUDIO I didn't have much time in the studio this month. Though I did re-record the vocals for "Bright Side of Everything". The first version was weak. I also recorded a new song for a friend. It's called "Together (Krabbe Connect)". Krabbe is a lysosomal storage disease, I think. I'm not super certain. The lyrics were written by my friend who works in the field and requested a song. It was fun to produce. It even includes hard-hitting drums that I recorded with my drum machine. I also started talking with Samantha Gillogly again about a hobbit dance CD I want to release with her. We started it a few years back. But nothing has come of it yet. But stay tuned. We might start releasing singles. 8:03 - MERCH I had my first physical show since the pandemic struck. I got to test some of my ideas for selling CDs in the new environment. My plan was to use a QR code and Bandcamp site to make it easy for you to figure out what CD you want to buy at the show. So far... not so successful. But I have other ideas coming. I'll let you know how that goes. 8:31 - TRAVEL The 2021 Celtic Invasion of Scotland will have us staying in a castle 20 minutes from Loch Lomond. That's the only detail I know about next year's invasion. But it's a first step for the trip. The size of the castle means we might have a larger than normal group. I also know my family will stay at the castle as well. But they won't be a part of the regular touring. 8:59 - IRISH & CELTIC SONG LYRICS Here are some of the new Irish & Celtic Song Lyrics that were updated this month: Tough Times, A Well-Dressed Hobbit, My Father Was a Werewolf, Green Grow the Rashes I also updated some videos and information on these songs:  Reavers’ Lullaby, Why Do You Torture Me, Mingulay Boat Song, She’s Shiny, Zombie Love Song, Gollum Blues, Harry Potter and the Rising of the Moon, Purple Flower, Soul of a Harper, Thorin’s Eulogy, Elves 9:40 - SHOWS PLANNED FOR JULY JUL 16: Celtfather Live on YouTube @ 7:30 PM EDT JUL 18: The Lost Druid in Decatur, GA @ 7:00 - 9:00 PM JUL 24: Interstellar Ginger Beer & Exploration Co in Alabaster, AL @ 7 - 9:30 PM CDT JUL 25: Pepper Place Farmer's Market in Birmingham, AL @ 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM CDT JUL 29 - AUG 2: Gen Con in Indianapolis, IN WEDS: Coffee with The Celtfather on Facebook (Season 6) @ 11:00 AM EST 10:38 - STATS Mailing list subscribers = 1130 is up from 1088 Celtic Music Magazine = 4007 is up from 3999 YouTube Subscribers = 4649 is up 42 from 4607 Facebook Likes = 3735 is up 20 from 3715 Instagram = 1825 followers Spotify followers: 1548 is up from 1530 # Number of listens on Spotify: 2003 is down from 2109 Spotify Latest Single Stats: "Molly Malone": 21 is down from 23 Spotify Latest Single Stats: "The Last Jedi Drinking Song": 64 is down from 94 Spotify Latest Album Stats: I Will Not Sing Along: 293 is down from 302 streams Most-popular songs on Spotify: The Widow and the Devil (1.3K), Doctor of Gallifrey (422), Reavers, Malcolm, Reavers (215), A-Working in the Garden (173), Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster (168), Hero of Canton (160) 12:21 - PATREON Patreon Subscribers: 160 is up from 159 Patreon Monthly Income: $1175 is down from $1208 Thanks as always for supporting my music. Streaming music gives you a quick and easy way to sample all of my music. I've been listening for a long time and decided it was time to pay back for all of that great music. I discovered the Gothard Sisters, who are from my town, right here on your podcast. Well, I really decided to support your podcast because you have expressed on many occasions your support for diversity in Celtic music and you have highlighted many female and LGBT artists. This touched me especially as many in these underrepresented groups struggle to find a voice. Thank you and keep up the great work. A devoted listener." Phillip More emailed: "Hello mark, I've been  listening to your podcast  music for I don't remember  how long , I've tracked my family tree back to 1463 to Ireland  and lately I have picked up a new hobby , I make cigar box guitars electric /acoustic  3 string and 4 string , I was wondering if any of the bands you work with have ever used them  thank you for your time" Jeffrey Adelsberger emailed: "Marc, Thank you for your great podcast. I discovered while doing my yearly search for music to add to my collection to prep for St. Paddy’s. I was able to get the music offered easily. I grew up in a family that appreciated bands like the dubliners and I Grew to appreciate trad before expanding my tastes with more rock oriented Irish stuff (Pogues to drop kick Murphys and such). Gaelic Storm and Cean are two bands that probably represent my current listening interests best. I recently got into Coig after seeing them at the Maryland Irish Festival. We had the pleasure to visit Ireland last summer and I was gearing up to doing a heavy St Pats week before everything went south. This podcast has helped deal with it."

Sometimes the things that matter most to us don’t matter as much to those we serve.  The Bridge is still one of my favorite albums. It features one of the best songs I feel like I ever recorded—“Peggy Gordon”.  And yet no one talks about the album.  There are many reasons why this may be. But one may be it just hasn’t found its audience.  They say anonymity is the greatest obstacle for musicians. So I’m gonna share this album in its entirety to reach a few more people.  If enjoy the album, buy it. Or add it to your library on Spotify. I'm a Celtic Geek musician and podcaster. Once again, I'm sharing one of my albums from start to finish.  The Irish diaspora to America brought the happy gift of Irish music, informing and influencing folk, ragtime, blues and even jazz. In this unique collection of original and traditional music, Celtic American musician Marc Gunn leafs through music known, remembered and new to find common themes, melodies and memories.  The Bridge is just that – a connection not only between Irish and American music, but also between Marc Gunn’s previous work primarily in Celtic music and his roots in folk, and newer influences of blues and jazz for this New Orleans-based musician.  Above all, the Bridge expresses Marc Gunn’s deep love for the music of both his home and where his heart resides. Welcome to the all new Geek Pub Songs. I say "new" but in all honesty, it's the same as the old Pub Songs Podcast but with a shiny new title and a new format. I changed to the title to fit a new niche. Yes, this show features a lot of Celtic music. As I am the host of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast, I get a lot of awesome Celtic music. So you can expect that. But I wanted a title that better fits my music as well. Most of my original music is Geek Pub Songs. So I decided to make that the new focus. In this show, you will hear Celtic music and Geek music mixed together. You'll also get a sneak peek at my new album of music inspired by Firefly. Yes, my album of Browncoat drinking songs called As Long As I'm Flyin' comes out on March 6, 2018. So I want to share that music with you. It is two cats beautifully bound together in a Celtic heart knotwork. It was designed by Ingrid Houwers. And best of all, you'll also be able to download my Celtic Love compilation, including two unique songs. The sticker is only $5. Bean Phaidin Lyrics It's a pity that I am not, that I am not It's a pity that I am not Páidín's wife It's a pity that I am not, that I am not And the woman he has is dead I would go to Galway, to Galway I would go to Galway with Páidín I would go to Galway, to Galway And I would return home with him in the boat I would go to the Clifden market And into Béal Áth in the Bay I would look in through the windows Hoping to see Páidín's wife May you break your legs, your legs May you break your legs, Páidín's wife May you break your legs, your legs May you break your legs and your bones I wore out my shoes, my shoes I wore out my shoes chasing Páidín I wore out my shoes, my shoes I wore out the soles and the heels

So stop listening now. I have released over 20 studio albums since 2004. I thought it would be nice to make playlists of my music, when I realized, I have been publishing this podcast since 2005. This is the perfect place to create a Marc Gunn playlist. So over the next two hours, you will enjoy lots of my music, intermixed with a small sampling of my favorite bands from the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. I say small, because there's a lot of great music, and I also am aiming for a drinking songs feel to this show. Because that's kinda what I do. Sci Fi and Irish drinking songs, merged together in harmony. But don't worry. There's a bunch of trad tunes in the mix as well... I'm pleased to share another rough mix of from my Celtic Christmas Greeting Cards. This is a slight modification of "Frosty the Snowman". There are no substantial changes to the song we all love. But since it doesn't snow too often in Ireland, I had to take a few creativity licenses. Thanks to Samantha Gillogly who added a bouncy fiddle part to the song as well. Here's another rough cut from my Celtic Christmas Greeting Cards and CD that are now on Kickstarter. Everyone in America, at least, knows "Jingle Bells". It's a favorite for kids especially. So I decided to keep the rhythm and mood of it more traditional Christmas than Celtic. Samantha Gillogly add a beautiful fiddle part which brings out the melody even better. The Celtic Christmas Greeting Cards are still available until November 3rd. Order yours now at http://celticmusic.org/CelticChristmasGreetingCards

This is perhaps my favorite Christmas song ever written. Obviously, it's not a Celtic Christmas song. So to give it that Celtic edge, I had Samantha Gillogly add some brilliant fiddling. The result is sheer perfection. You can get this and other Celtic Christmas music as part of my Celtic Christmas Greeting Cards that are now on Kickstarter. One of my favorite Celtic Christmas songs was made famous by Bing Crosby. It's a delightful song with a toe-tapping melody. I had Samantha Gillogly give it an even more Irish sound with some fantastic fiddling. Here she has played 'To Drive the Cold Winter Away' for us and we read her favourite verse for her in the show and print it below. When not practicing, performing, or composing, Gillogly’s off hours are spent writing fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and experimenting in painting, drawing and calligraphy. She is a published writer in multiple formats, and has been a contributing critic to The Green Man Review, an online arts and culture magazine, and now writes on Celtic Arts and Culture for Examiner.com. Her favourite culinary pursuit is brewing her infamous triple-espresso coffee, known to those who've dared taste it as "Viola Varnish". You can find out more about Sam on her website or on our Contributor Page. You can also read her wonderful Celtic articles on her Examiner.com site.   The Isle of Many Gods by David Rankine & Sorita D'Este Isles of the Many Gods : An A-Z of the Pagan Gods & Goddesses worshipped in Ancient Britain during the first millenium through to the Middle Ages: A ... Britain During the First Millennium CE. The Isles of the Many Gods brings together, for the first time, information on the worship of these deities in Britain, in an easy to use A-Z. It includes both the native & immigrant gods & goddesses, from well known gods like Apollo, Brigit, Freya, Herne, Isis, Mars & Woden to lesser known ones like Abandinus, Arianrhod, Genii Cucullati, Midir, Vitiris & the Wheel God. You can find out more about the book or buy it from Avalonia Books or Amazon. Find out more about Avalonia on their website or on our Contributor Page.   Believe by Jenna Greene Jenna Greene is a Celtic Pagan singer-songwriter and harpist. Her songs are inspired by hope and healing, following bliss, nature mythology, the law of attraction and the little miracles in everyday life. Believe: "I wrote this song for my daughter and all children-at-heart. It is about a magical friendship between a fairy and a human child. The fairy teaches the child to always believe in herself and in her dreams. This song has become my personal anthem. I end every concert with Believe to remind myself and my audience that believing is the magic that creates reality." Jenna can be found on Myspace, but her own website provides lots of useful information. You can find out more details about Jenna on her Contributor Page on our website.   The Wife or the Wuddy by John Mackay Wilson This story is the second part of a tale, "The Wife or the Wuddy' by Mr Wilson who was famed for collecting hundreds of tales from the Scottish Borders. I think they went up to about volume 23! This story is a little lengthy, and is the main reason that we split this Holiday Special into two parts. The first part of the story can be heard in Episode SP17a. If you find the accents or the vocabulary somewhat difficult to follow, then please follow along with the text which you can find at Project Gutenberg listed below.  You can read the original of this book on Project Gutenberg.   Dagda by Andrew Hinkinson-Hodnett I wrote the first version of my poem Dagda back in October 2004, and the verses were shortly afterwards used in casting a sacred circle to invoke the male aspect of the Divine. Dagda is an Old God, an important figure in Irish mythology and a High King of the Tuatha Dé Danann. He is important to many Pagan paths including Druidry. Dagda is sometimes connected in people’s minds to the Green Man whose face adorns old churches, and while there appears to be no evidence I can find to confirm that link as real it is nevertheless one that I myself intuitively make. The version of the poem I present to you today was extensively revised just as a gloriously hot pink and baby blue dawn broke on this very morning in 2009. I only realised when the reworking was finished that it is exactly five years and two months after the original was committed to paper. I hope you enjoy reading, and feel free to make use of the poem in your own ritual invocations (but as ever please acknowledge the poet’s copyright, and do not republish anywhere else). The image above is the Dagda on the Gundestrup Cauldron, courtesy of Wiki. You can read more from Andy on his fascinating blog and poetry site, The Spicy Cauldon.  [Source and the full text of the poem]     The Greenwood Grove by Damh the Bard This song, The Greenwood Grove, comes from Damh's second album - The Hills they are Hollow which is available on his website, at CD Baby or in iTunes. For more details about Damh - his music and his work, have a look at his website, paganmusic.co.uk or our Contributor Page.   Promo - Digital Magic by Philippa Ballantine Digital Magic is the sequel to Chasing the Bard- the award winning podcast novel–written by New Zealand author Philippa Ballantine. "Penherem is a quaint, sleepy English village where people go to escape the 21st Century. Hiding from the world of laptop computers, the Internet, and wireless communication, is Ella. A writer, now barren of ideas and drive, she resigns herself to a quiet life of solitude. Everything changes with the arrival of a shapeshifting thief. Suddenly, everyone begins to change–from the local librarian to the lady of the manor–revealing their true natures and dangerous secrets. Something in this sleepy English village is awakening… something that might be better left alone." You can follow the Digital Magic blog or subscribe to the podcast. You can also find the podcast in iTunes. The story is also available in print form.   Nines by The Pentacle Drummers "The Pentacle Drummers' livery has always been green and red. Our tatter coats and face paint help lend a theatrical touch to events. Sometimes it seems that we live our 'Life in Tatters'. At the Herstmonceux and Michelham Priory Medieval Festivals we enter into the spirit of the events by adopting full medieval attire. At bonfires we adopt a much darker look. You will recognise us by our more sombre black gothic costumes and makeup, some wicked hats and a plethora of glowsticks." Pop along and see the Tolkien Wiki for more details.   Da Day Dawn by Samantha Gillogly Born in Los Angeles, violinist/violist/composer Samantha Gillogly began her musical training at age six on the island of Martha's Vineyard. Fluent in an extensive list of standard classical repertoire, from Adams to Zelenka, she is also an avid fan and performer of traditional and crossover music employing such styles as Celtic, Bluegrass, Gypsy and Scandinavian fiddle, as well as jazz and improvisation. When not practicing, performing, or composing, Gillogly’s off hours are spent writing fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and experimenting in painting, drawing and calligraphy. She is a published writer in multiple formats, and has been a contributing critic to The Green Man Review, an online arts and culture magazine. Her favorite culinary pursuit is brewing her infamous triple-espresso coffee, known to those who've dared taste it as "Viola Varnish". Gillogly performs on a French 1860 Charles Simonin violin. You can find out more about Samantha on Myspace or our Contributor Page.   Danny Boy by Danny Quinn Danny Quinn has been a performer of Irish & American folk music for nearly three decades. He has entertained throughout the U.S., Canada, Ireland and England at concerts, coffee houses, festivals, corporate events and pubs. Since 1979 he has shared the stage with or opened for renowned artists such as the Clancy Brothers, Tom Chapin, Peter Yarrow, Robbie O'Connell, the Makem & Spain Brothers, John Prine, David Mallett, Walt Michael, Eilleen Ivers, The Chieftains and many others. For over twenty years Danny toured nationally with the legendary Tommy Makem. Find out more about the Danny on his website, his Myspace page or on our Contributor Page.   Midsummer Night's Dream by Karen Kay & Michael Tingle Karen says: I live literally at the ends of the earth in magical mystical Cornwall. I love the sea and lush green nature. The stunning scenery inspires my music and meditations. I love to create and express myself using my voice. I hope you will enjoy my creations. She is also the editor and founder of Fae Magazine. A new magazine for faery fans in the UK, rest of Europe and around the faery world! You can find out more about Karen on her website, Michael on his website or our Contributor Page.   King for a Thousand Years by Orient XPress Orient Xpress is a transCaucasian Indie Guitar band with Azeri passion, Irish soul, Essex Blag, Polish spirit, and a whole heap of loveliness. The sort of band that a 15yo crazy will love but his mum will too (from their Myspace page). You can find out more about Orient Xpress on their Contributor page.    The Chair of Cerridwen Sacred Texts From The Book of Taliesin on Sacred Texts, taken from the Four Ancient Books of Wales by William F. Skene.   The Balefire Song by Tinkerscuss Tinkerscuss are sisters Erin and Bryony Holden who live in the north Gloucestershire village of Bourton-on-the-Water. They are renowned for songs that are dark and eerie along with the more traditional ‘Celtic’ pieces. The combination of Bryony's rich, resonant vocals and Erin's modal guitar style will enthral, bespell and wrap the listener in the mists of myth and legend. You can find out more details about Tinkerscuss on Myspace or on their Contributor Page on our website.    This Song by Thinker Thinker are a 3-piece folk-indie band from the South of the UK. They call themselves folk-indie, but only because they are acoustic led and have a fiddle; in reality it is difficult to categorise music which draws on Irish, English, Punk and Indie influences. Over the past year they have played across the South coast, from London to Cornwall, playing many festivals in the Summer, and with friends and acts like 3 Daft Monkeys. With a growing following and reputation for song writing, musicianship and performance, Thinker are keen to build on their achievements, and bring their music to audiences old and new in 2009. You can find out more details about Thinker on Myspace or on their Contributor Page on our website.   The Faery Dance by Faeries Wear Boots Born just weeks apart, with a mutual love of all things dark, gothic, shiny, folky, and fae, it was inevitable that Chrissie and Polly would eventually come together to form Faeries Wear Boots, a modern melting-pot of the darker elements of British and Irish folk music and lore with pretty tunes, driving beats, and of course, very big boots. Soon they were joined by Chrissie's father, Andrew, and (when he wasn't busy being a rock star) her brother Robby and the Faeries Wear Boots line up was complete... Described by one festival organizer as ‘faeries with attitude’, Faeries Wear Boots continue to go from strength to strength as they win over audiences with their captivating tunes and fantastical faerie attire. ... Already Faeries Wear Boots have been asked to support Scottish songstress Isla Sinclair, and have played alongside Pagan-Folk and Faery artists such as Omnia, Daughters of Gaia, The Dolmen, Wendy Rule and Elfin Spiral. You can find out more details about Faeries Wear Boots on their Website or on their Contributor Page on our website.   Poitin Valley by The Logues The Logues began some time at the start of 2006 when 'Bobby' (Banjo/Guitar) was pissed in one of Castlederg’s finest drinking establishments, the Town House, and for some reason thought it would be a good idea to book a non-existent, nameless band with no members for St. Paddy's day. The incident went forgotten in his mind until a couple of weeks before St. Paddy's day when it was too late to back out. He rounded the rest of us up without much fuss, having known each other from school, and we started practicing on the 16h of March. The next day went surprisingly well and we haven’t stopped since. We also needed a band name so we named ourselves after our bass/singer/tin whistler, Justin Logue, like a culchie Bon Jovi. I suppose you could call it Irish folk rock or as I prefer, drinking music, or music you could punch your mother to. Either way we hope you enjoy our stuff. We’re currently recording an album and will be hitting your local in the next year or two. You can find out more details about Faeries Wear Boots on their Myspace page or on their Contributor page on this website.   Listener Feedback Caitlin We read an email from Caitlin from Indiana.   Get EXTRA content in the Celtic Myth Podshow App for iOS, Android & Windows Contact Us: You can leave us a message by using the Speakpipe Email us at: garyandruth@celticmythpodshow.com.
